Dr. Rox Remember When?

Article #95 Jan-2019

By: RLSchwinden

So in my enduring quest to preserve and bring vintage music to the masses, I have embarked on a new co-op opportunity with an existing radio show on WFNU 94.1fm Rick Burnett’s “Hits And History” on Monday mornings 8:30 to 9:30am.  Now you need to understand Rick’s show is on every Monday morning, however Mr. Zero’s co-hosting is only on Every 2nd Monday of the Month @ 8:30am – 9:30am.

Sometime in December 2018 (right around Mr. Zero’s 10th Xmas $ALE) DJ Rick Burnett who runs “Twin Cities Airchecks .Com” a website dedicated to preserving radio history, for an example of this website Burnett showed me a photo of “Mean Gene” Okerlund in the WDGY studios from back in the day when he was DJ Gene Leader, anyways, back to our story …

Burnett came into talk to me because he had heard my “PsychoGello Radio Show” on WDGY as well as he heard me guesting on WFNU’s “90min Radio Hour” we began talking and Burnett commented on the wealth of knowledge and experience I bring to the 2 other radio shows and would I be interested in guesting on his Monday WFNU Show “Hits & History” I responded with a resounding “Yes, when do we begin” Burnett then asked me for an “Themed Show”  I immediately came up with “Mr. Zero’s The Year (In Review)” the 1st show was “1966 USA” followed by “1966 UK” (which aired in Jan 2019) and part 3 to air in February 2019, “1966 R&B”.

Since the show is titled “Hits And History” and is an hour long what I decided to do was pick about 12 of my favorite songs form that specific time period, and talk about  how high they charted and when they charted, and some back history on the song and artist themselves. Mr. Zero’s 2nd Annual Xmass Radio Shows

MrZerr0’s Annual Xmass Radio Shows

Article #94: Dec- 2018

For Radio WDGY & WFNU

By: RLSchwinden aka: MrZerr0

When I was a very tiny baby (actually round like a beach-ball with a head), when my Father’s (1941-2018) family needed a baby sitter they used to set “Little Ricky” in front of the fireplace until they set up  the Christmas tree in late Nov (around the time of my Father’s Bday) I would not move until someone came over and moved me away from that location, thus began my love of Christmas, in addition to growing lower middle working class on the west side of Sioux City, it was my one big score for TOYS! I remember, about 1970 going over to my sister Michelle’s God-Mother’s house on Christmas day & they were playing Vinyl Christmas Records, I was amazed, and then I began to look for Christmas music.

The 1st song I remember searching for was probably Lennon’s “Happy Xmas” it did not occur to me, not everyone had a Christmas album, what I  learned  over the years was sometimes puzzling at least, some were 45 Singles, or 1 song on a regular studio LP, some were “Promotional Only” to Radio Stations or Record-stores, later Cassingles or CD Singles! Later in the early 80s I learned my youngest sister Carrie would listen to Christmas Music year-round! It must run in the family. In 1985 I began making my annual Dr. Rox Remember When? Christmas Cassette” until 1999, when I was able to make my 1st Christmas CD, until last year when I was able to make my 1st annual “Christmas Radio Show”.

This year I am lucky enough to have 2 “Christmas Radio Shows” the 1st one was on Wed. 19 Dec 2018 @ 7am on WFNU 94.1 fm Frogtown Radio, you can stream this on  MixCloud.Com under RussTheDJ,  so here is the breakdown of the show:

Opening our show is “Mr. Zero’s in St. Paul” by: Amy Dawn Fauble from 2017. She and I used to work in the same recording studio (Wishing Star: St. Paul)

  1. “Christmas Time Is Here Again”: Beatles; 1967-95

I 1st heard this recording on a Beatles: Bootleg back in 1980, my friend Mindy had given me when I was in the hospital from a near fatal motorcycle accident that year. This version is from the CD Single: Only, from the “Anthology Vol.1” CD released in 1995.

  1. Christmas: WHO; 1969

This is an edited version from the album “Tommy” I heard this when i was on my “The WHO” kick back in 1986.

  1. Miss Christmas: Energy/Tommy Bolin; 1972

I am from Sioux City, so is Tommy Bolin, this is from his 5th and favorite band ‘Energy’ formed in Denver – Boulder, CO. they recorded 2 sets of demos in 1972, the band did not get signed at the time, but in 1999 the “Tommy Bolin Archives” released a CD only, of what would have been the band’s 1st album, this song is contained herein, written & sung by Jeff Cook. I have met 4 of the 5 members of ‘Energy’ their drummer Bobby Berge is a good friend of mine.

  1. A Christmas Song: Jethro Tull; 1968

My long time good friend ACE (not Frehley) turned me onto this song probably in 2000, i just love this one, so much I went to see them live in Aug 2002 at Mystic Lake, their Guitarist Martin Barre is amazing!

  1. Christmas Eve Can Kill You: Everly Bros; 1972

I found out about this song when I bought the CD, I loved the cover photo so I bought the CD. I have met the Everly Bros. interseting trivia fact they are from Shenandoah, Iowa, just 150 miles south of Sioux City, where I am from.

  1. Christmas Is My Time Of Year: Monkees; 1976

My co-worker brought me this this song back in Jan ’86, this is the edited version, strangely The Monkees put out a Christmas CD this year and this track is not on the CD. As I have mentioned several times we named our Record-Store “Mr. Zero’s” after the Monkees TV episode #52 “Devil & Peter Tork”  also my other Radio Show on WDGY is named after a Monkees reference in episode #58 Nesmith makes the statement “PsychoGello” so I used that to name my show.

  1. I Believe In Father Christmas: ELP; 1977

I am pretty sure I heard this song on the radio at my Grandma Marge’s house on 1706 Villa, she always had the radio playing while she was cleaning and cooking. I saw ELP in Feb. ’92 in Ames, Iowa.

  1. Dead By X-mas: Hanoi Rocks; 1981

My old band mate Eric D. turned me onto this band in 1985, after the had just broken up, I love them! The band hailed for Helsinki, Finland, this song was on their 3rd album. I have met 2 of the members of the band in Oct. 2011.

  1. Another Lonely Christmas: Prince; 1984

I bought the 45 Single of “I Would Die For You” in 1984 (yes, because of a girl) this song is on the B-Side, there were 5 songs not on the ‘Purple Rain’ soundtrack, from the film that were released on 45 or 12″ Singles, this is one of them. I loved that about Prince, not too many artists ever released so much material especially in this fashion.

  1. That Spirit Of Christmas: Ray Charles; 1985

Born Ray Charles Robison in Albany, GA. 1930 -2004. Though I started selling Vinyl Records in 1985 as a job, this one slipped under my radar , until the 1989 film “Christmas Vacation” in the scene where “Sparky” is watching the old 8mm film reels and the trap door gets opened up on him and falls down the steps, hilarious…

  1. Comon Christmas: Cheap Trick; 1995

Now this one came out as a single in 1994, but VERY limited release, I found it as a bonus track on the band’s boxset. I have my High School buddy “Strat” to thank for getting me into this band, from Rockford, Ill. about 1980 it was.

  1. Here Is Christmas: Ann & Nancy Wilson; 1989

I have always liked ‘Heart’ from Seatlle, WA. since 1976 when I lived in Jackson (Brandon), MISS. in 1987-88, I dated an “Ann Wilson” look alike. This song came out as a Cassingle only release in 1989, I never cared for Cassettes, but this is the only way you could get this song.

“Nerd Is The Word”: PsychoGello 2017

Finally my Theme song, I wrote & recorded this with Terrance & Paul.

So this wraps up my  “WFNU: Christmas Show” onto my 2nd annual WDGY Show.

Sun. 23 Dec 2018 10:30am on WDGY 740am

“Mr. Zeros PsychoGello Christmas Show”

  1. “Rockin Santa Claus” The Martels; 1959

In 1988 Rhino Records released the CD & Cassette “Cool Yule” now I bought for The Monkees song, but as I played it each year, year after year for 30 years now I came to love many of the rare songs on this CD. This Vocal Group from Ontario, Canada formed in 1959.

  1. “I Want A Rock N Roll Guitar” Johnny Preston; 1960

This song was originally released in 1960, the artist (1939-2001) was from Port Arthur, TX. from the same “Cool Yule” CD.

  1. “Dancing With Santa” The Trashmen; 1964

All the way from Robbinsdale, MN. and Dal Winslow personally came into Mr. Zero’s 55113 and thanked me for getting that right! This was their 6th 45 Single from 1964 on Garrett Records. My Dad (Bill) was in a band that played on the same concert bill as the Trashmen in ’63 in Brooklyn Park – Osseo, before he was shipped off to Vietnam.

  1. “Rain, Sleet, Snow” Paul Revere & The Raiders; 1967

One of the few bands I discovered on my own in my youth, I saw the did the song “Louie, Louie” so I bought their “Greatest Hits” this band’s 2nd home was Portland, OR. they recorded a Christmas LP to by some time for their new members change.

  1. “Christmas ’68” The Beatles: 1968

In the UK only, The Beatles, recorded a Christmas Flexi-Disc  from 1963 to 1969 (7 total) and mailed them out to the UK Fan Club members, in 1970 they put them all on an album and sent that LP out to the UK fans, this LP was one of the most Pirated albums ever. The original version is 7:51min long I trimmed this down in the vein of George Martin’s 1995 edit. Worth noting Tiny Time performs “Nowhere Man” on this recording (I had Tiny Tim sign my vinyl copy) also my 15 seconds of fame last year I received a Cease and Desist from The Apple Record Corp. for sharing this recording.

  1. “Yesterday’s Christmas” Bobby Sherman; 1970

When I was a kid on Douglas St. in Sioux City, Post cereals put flexi-records on the back of cereal boxes, I had several of The Monkees, The Archies & Bobby Sherman and maybe even the Jackson 5, so I know who Bobby was, but I found this song on a CD titled “T.V. Family Christmas” I just love this song, it totally takes me back to that Christmas of 1970 on Douglas St. Bobby was born in Santa Monica in 1973.

  1. “Pine Cones & Holly-berries” The Osmonds; 1976

It was my Uncle Johnny who turned me onto the Osmond Bros. with the album “Crazy Horses” in ’72. My sister Michelle loved the “Donny & Marie Show” I didn’t much care for it, but it did result in a Christmas album. By the way The Osmonds are from Ogden, UT.  and began performing back in 1958.

  1. “Christmas Vacation” Mavis Staples; 1989

Everyone should know this song being the opening theme to the film of the same name, except this 45 Single was never for sale to buy! At the time she was signed to Prince’s Paisley Park Records. Eventually this song was released on a Various CD in 1996. Mavis was from the Vocal Group “The Staple Singers” she was born in Chicago in 1939.

  1. “Looking For Christmas” Clint Black; 1995

Admittedly, I am not a Country Music fan, but every now and then a song comes out and grabs me by the heart this is one of them. Whenever I hear this song it takes me right back to 1995 when I lived on the south-side of Des Moines. Who would have thought a Country Singer would be born in New Jersey, Long Branch in 1962 to be precise.

Aquaman -2018

“Aquaman”

21 Dec 2018; WB 143min

Director: James Wan

“Mr. Zero’s TimeMachine”

Article #21 Dec- 2018

By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0

As a kid in Sioux City, I was more into listening to 45 Records than I was comic books, but there were a few comics I collected those being; Iron Man, Hawk Man & Aquaman. So I was fairly excited when the 2017 “Just League” film had Aquaman in it. Then in 2018 will release the film “Aquaman” I was able to see an advance of this film recently.

To my surprise Joseph Momoa was (1 August 1979) was raised and went to school in Norwalk, Iowa a mere 15 min. from Southridge Mall, where I worked at the very same time (1991- 1995), being a music fanatic & musician Momoa and his classmate, as teenagers (they graduated in 1997) Brandon Routh (9 October 1979 Des Moines, Iowa) “Superman/ The Atom” surly visited the “RecordShop” I worked at in those days. How cool is that 2 DC characters came from the same High School in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa.

Well the powers that be did a great job hiring such a good looking cast, Momoa for the women to dream about, & Amber Heard (22 April 1986: Austin) to me, a ringer for a 1989 version of Christina Applegate, and one of the most popular actress’ of our time, none other than Nicole Kidman (20 June 1967: Honolulu) who deserves a humanitarian award, award as far as I am concerned. It was cool to see Dolph Lundgren in a film again and using Julie Andrews: Voice as “Karathen” a nice bone to throw. The introduction of “Manta” is a nice touch, although clearly it is to set up a “Part 2” hopefully next year, I will go see it for sure.

The film, Momoa, his humorous enough to satisfy the masses, the film has plenty to take in and look at (thanks to CGI) lots of color and lights & imagery, and it moves fast enough for the “Cellphone Crowd” and the obligatory “Love Story”. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sorry folks, I only do facts & preferences NO spoilers. But like I always say “Go see it and decide for yourself, you may not like what I enjoy”

See ya next time …. MrZerr0

WFNU 94.1 “Evolation Show”

94.1 fm

Mr. Zero’s Evolation Show”

Nov- 2018 Article #93 for Radio WFNU
By: RLSchwinden
So in October of this year I met and talked to Russ a Local DJ on WFNU 94.1fm “Frogtown Radio”, he and I began talking, I had mentioned I had a Radio Show on WDGY every Sunday covering a different artist each week since June 2017. Russ asked “How did this come about?” I said “It all started as a yearly guest spot on the Radio Show “The Pop-Shop” with  DJ Izzy & Liberty Finch for 2 hours on KFAI 90.3am & 106.7fm doing a show focusing on music from 1965 to 1969 called “The PsychoGello Show” since October 2012, and every year since. In May 2017 the Show Producer for “Ground Breakers” on radio WDGY 740am  & 92.1, 103.7, 107.1 fm approached me about doing a music history show using vinyl records. I came up with a theme of 1 artist per show, playing 1 song (usually a deep cut) from each of the artist’s albums in order from beginning to end. Since Keith was the show’s producer I was able to side-step the long standing FCC rule from 1962, “A radio station may not play more than 2 songs by 1 artist in a 1 hour period”, allowing me to make a half hour show on a single artist every week.

Russ said “That sounds really cool, we should have you guest on my radio show on WFNU 94.1 fm “The 90 min Radio Hour” Wednesday mornings at 7 am. So on Halloween of this year I made my 1st guest appearance, the 1st show I did was the “Mr. Zero Show”
1. “Mr. Zero” by: Keith Relf/ Yardbirds a #50 hit from 1966; (we named our store after this song that we opened in 2009)
2. “Words” by; The Monkees a #11 hit from Sep 1967 (my favorite song by my favorite band)
3. “Kissin Time” by: KISS from April 1974 (I perform in a KISS tribute band since 2013)
4. “Someday Will Bring Our Love Home” by: Tommy Bolin from Sep 1976 (this artist is from my hometown of Sioux City, Iowa)
5.”It’s All Too Much” by: The Beatles from Jan 1969 (the mascot for our store was created by the man who worked on “Yellow Submarine”)
6.”Nerd Is The Word” by: PsychoGello from Jan 2017 (one of the many theme songs for our store, this one I wrote & performed)

This show went over so well, Russ asked me to come back each week, but he wanted a theme for us to follow moving forward. I suggested a we do a version of the last show I did on KFAI in March 2018. I titled the new show “Mr. Zero’s Evolation” taking and combining the words “Evolve” & “Revelation” we focus on 1 band each and how they evolved, then upon hearing the show, the listener may arrive at a revelation of “I did not know this came from that” the problem still being you can not play more than 2 songs per artist in a 1 hour period.
So I decided to start with The Beatles, as the are probably the most influential bands of all time and defiantly the best selling artist of all time. The premise of the “Evolation Show” is a studio track, a live track, a cover version, and 3 to 5 solo songs from the band’s members. Here we go;

Emerson, Lake & Palmer: 1970 -78

Episode #60

“ELP: Still … you turn me on”

Emerson, Lake & Palmer: 1970 -1978

Dr. Rox Remember When? for WDGY Radio

Article #92: Oct 2018

By: RLSchwindfen: MrZerr0

So my grandma Marge passed away in Jan of this year (2018), while I was at her funeral in Phoenix, I was thinking of my best memories of her. One was in Dec ’78 I was at her house, she was in the kitchen making Xmas cookies, I was sitting in the living-room in her favorite chair, it was about 4:30- 5 pm, I was watching the lights on the Xmas tree, Grandma always had the radio on KMNS (I believe it was) and ‘ELP’ s “Lucky Man” came on, now I had heard this song before, but that day it really moved me. I always liked that one. This later prompted me to start playing this song in my pick-up band “The Lay-abouts” in ‘93. This article is a companion to my “PsychoGello Radio Show” Episode #60 (Sep 2018) w/ DJ Evangeline on “Emerson, Lake & Palmer”

> In The Beginning: 1970 <

The band was formed in London by 3 members, from 3 other British bands; Keith Emerson (Keith Noel Emerson: 2 Nov 1944: London – 11 Mar 2016; Santa Monica, CA.)He was the keyboardist in the band ‘The Nice’ from 1967 – 1970 for 4 albums. Greg Lake (Gregory Stewart Lake: 10 Nov 1947: London – 7 Dec 2016) the Vocalist & Bassist in the band ‘King Crimson’ 1968 – 1970 for 2 albums.  Carl Palmer (Carl Frederick Kendall Palmer Birmingham 20 Mar 1950) the Drummer in the band ‘Atomic Rooster’ 1969 -1970 for 1 album. Lake & Emerson met on tour in ’69 playing in San Francisco, they found Palmer through a series of auditions. Their 1st gig was ion 23 Aug 1970 followed by their 2nd gig not a week later on 29 Aug 1970 at the legendary “Isle Of Wight Festival”. The band’s 1st album ‘Emerson, Lake & Palmer’ was released in January 1971 and rose to #18 on Billboard Charts, with the single “Lucky Man b/w Knife- Edge” which hit #48 on the Billboard Charts in May 1971, the “A-side” was the 1st song Lake had written as a child.

> Infinite Space: 1971 – 1972 <

The band release their 2nd album ‘Tarkus’ in  June 1971, it rises to #9 on Billboard Charts, they release 2 singles from the LP “Stones Of Years b/w Time And Place” & “Hoedown” the band almost dissolved over the recording of this album, as Lake was not too thrilled over Emerson’s (entire Side 1) composition. Their 3rd album was recorded and intended to be the 2nd but Atlantic records dissuaded them.

Their 3rd album ‘Pictures At An Exhibition’ a live concert LP recorded in Mar 1971, but released in November 1971 rises to #10 on Charts, the 45 Single form this album is “Nutrocker b/w Great Gates Of Kiev” which makes it to #70 in Apr 1972.

The band’s 4th LP ‘Trilogy’ is released in July 1972, Lake’s personal favorite of their catalog, hits #8 on Charts, with their highest charting 45 single “From the Beginning b/w Livng Sin” a  #39 hit on the charts in Oct 1972.

> Karn Evil 9: 1973 -1974 <

Now at the zenith of their popularity their 5th album ‘Brain Salad Surgery’ is released in November 1973 on the band’s own label Manticore Records this LP rises to #11 on the Charts. The cover art is by:H.R. Giger (Alien fame) and probably one of the most memorable covers of all time, with a non-typical gatefold jacket that contained a poster. This is their 1st to be on Vinyl, 8-Track & Cassette, to promote the forth coming album a  Promo Flexi-Disc of the song “Brain Salad Surgery” and excerpts of several others is released (very rare as I have never seen one) the strange thing is the title song is not on the album?  The 45 single released for this LP is “Jerusalem b/w When the Apple Blossoms Bloom in the Windmills of Your Mind I’ll Be Your Valentine” the B-Side is also a Non-LP track. ELP plays a concert here in town on: (here is the setlist).

1 Dec 1973  Sat. in Bloomington, MN. @ the Met Center.

Hoedown
Jerusalem
Toccata
Tarkus
Benny the Bouncer
Take a Pebble
Still… You Turn Me On
Lucky Man

Emerson Piano Solo
Karn Evil 9
Pictures at an Exhibition

The band was so popular they were the headliner of the legendary ”California Jam” in  April 1974 at  the Ontario Speedway, the show was broadcast on  on ABC TV, 10 songs were performed. The trend in those days was after a very successful tour a band would release a live album from that tour, the idea being that most of the people who attended their concerts would but the “Live” album from that tour, it worked,  the band release their 6th album; ‘Welcome Back My Friends’ in August 1974 it rises to #4 on the Billboard Charts, their highest charting LP, and a “Triple Album” on top of that, not many artists ever released a 3 LP set in those days, after the tour The band went on hiatus from Aug ’74 to sometime in 1976. While on hiatus Greg Lake releases the solos 45 single “I Believe In Father Christmas b/w Humbug” in Nov 1975 it misses the “Christmas #1” coming in at #2 in the UK this is the original alternate version which was re-recorded and released later on.

> Honourable Company: 1977 -1979 <

After a 3 year break the band release their 7th album the double LP ’Works Vol.1′ March 1977 with one side per member: Emerson Side 1, Lake Side 2, Palmer Side 3 & the group on side 4 (the Monkees were to do this same concept in 1968-69) 2 singles are released from this album; “Fanfare For The Common Man B/w Brain Salad Surgery” & then “C’est la Vie b/w Jeremy Bender” it climbs to #12 on the charts. Later in the year their 8th LP is released ‘Works Vol 2’ in November 1977 and hits #37 on the Charts, probably because of the inclusion of the re-recording of “I Believe In Father Christmas” this is more of a leftovers, compilation album as many tracks were recorded earlier, again 2 singles are released for this LP the 1st one “Tiger In A Spotlight b/w So Far To Fall” & the 2nd “Maple leaf Rag b/w Watching Over You”. The band makes a rare TV appearance on the “Midnight Special” on 13 Jan 1978.

In ’78 the band owe their contract an album, so the 9th album ‘Love Beach’ is released in November 1978, this album gets over looked if for nothing else, other than the cover, it’s actually a really good album, again 2 singles are released; “All I Want Is You b/w Tiger In  A Spotlight” & following with“Canario b/w All I Want Is You” once again the band appear on TV to promote their new LP on the show “Top Of The Pops” on 23 Nov 1978. Their 10th album is their 3rd “Live” album from the ’77 Tour ‘In Concert’ is released in November 1979, with the 45 single

“Peter Gunn b/w Tiger In A Spotlight”. The band’s final album until the reunion is ’Best Of’ released in 1980, this is worth having for some edited versions of previously released songs.

I did see ELP in Ames, Iowa at C.Y. Stephens auditorium in Feb 1993 on the reunion tour for the new CD “Black Moon, released in June 1992 I was so impressed, Emerson was a sight to behold, I did, later see Greg Lake w/ Ringo Starr at the MN State Fair on 23 Aug 2001. In closing I do really like this band, admittedly more for the Greg Lake material, but the rest is worth a listen to, 3 fabulous musical minds melded together to create some outstanding music.

Mr. Zerr0’s Favorite Vinyl Records

Dr. Rox Remember When? Article #92-FR for WDGY

Sep -2018 By: RLSchwinden

So recently I was interviewed I was interviewed by ” Vinyl Times Magazine” New York 10165, about my 2 favorite Vinyl Record Covers. As I was talking to David of “Vinyl Times”, it got me to thinking about a film that could have been written about my life “High Fidelity” (2000 Touchstone), where the Star “DJ Rob Gordon” continues to talk about his “Top 5” everything …so I decided to create a list of my Top 15 Vinyl Records. Please Note: the USA virtually stopped all Vinyl Production in Dec 1987, as most customer purchased Cassettes or CDs at that time in history, so this list will contain nothing after 1987 even though there was some great music put on CD only after 1987, 99% of it  was not released on Vinyl.

  1. Monkees: “1st LP” 1966 – Colgems

According to my Father & my Mom I was a fan of the TV show very early on, as it aired about the same time as “Batman” did in 1966. I have met the Monkees, many times. My 3 favorite tracks: “Last Train To Clarksville” “Saturday’s Child” & “Sweet Young Thing”

  1. Beatles: “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” 1967  -Capitol

My Uncle Jeff, (who was acquaintances of Tommy R. Bolin) lived with us for awhile in 1971, he brought with him, his record collection, which included this gem. One of the very few perfect LPs. My 3 favorite tracks: “Fixing A Hole” “Sgt. Pepper’s” & “Within You, Without You”

  1. Mama’s And Papa’s: “Farewell To The First Golden Era” 1967 -Dunhill

My Mom & I lived her friend Carol in late ’68 she bought this LP, one of the few I ever remember her buying, she played it all the time, I remember watching  the Christmas tree lights and hearing this album, over and over. My 3 favorite tracks: “12:30 young girls are coming to the canyon” “California Dreamin” & “Monday Monday”

  1. Jimi Hendrix: “Smash Hits” 1969 -Reprise

I think my Uncle Jeff had this LP too. I do distinctly remember seeing it somewhere in my young childhood. The cover was great the music even greater. My 3 favorite tracks: “All Along The Watchtower” “Purple Haze” & “Foxy Lady”

  1. Steppenwolf: “7” 1970 -Dunhill

My Dad had a ’68 white VW Beetle with an 8-Track player & a whopping 3 tapes, this was one of them, he played it everywhere we went. Another perfect LP. My 3 favorite tracks: “Foggy Mental Breakdown” “Hippo Stomp” & “Renegade”

  1. Partridge Family: “Sound Magazine” 1971 -Bell

This was when I was at the right age to watch this show on TV. My Aunt Cathy was a huge fan so I got to hear her play these records. this one was one of my favorites. I did meet Cassidy in 1992. My 3 favorite tracks: “Summer Days”  “Rainmaker” “I’m On My Way Back Home”

  1. Osmond Bros. “Crazy Horses” 1972 -MGM

My Uncle John was the Drummer in a band “Freedom Of Wild Water II” in the band he sang a song of this LP. I gave it a listen and it became one of my favorites, my copy is autographed by all 5 bothers. My 3 favorite tracks are: “Hold Her Tight” “Life Is Hard Enough Without Goodbyes” & “Hey Mr. Taxi”

  1. Black Sabbath: “Vol. 4” 1972

My Uncle John’s 1st wife loaned me this LP, summer of ’78, it changed my life, another perfect album. I was the singer in a “Black Sabbath Tribute” band. My 3 favorite tracks: “Supernaut’ “Snowblind” & “Wheels Of Confusion”

  1. New York Dolls: “1st LP” 1973 -Mercury

In the early 80s I wanted our band have a look which was a variation of KISS, this was shortly before “Motley Crue” our Guitar Player Eric D. told me “Here, try this” and handed me this LP. I was Blown Away … This was in fact the look I was searching for. The music had the attitude I wanted also. I have met Johansen & Sylvain from the band. My 3 favorite tracks: “Jet Boy” “Private World” & “Lonely Planet Boy”

  1. KISS: “Hotter Than Hell” 1974 -Casablanca

I had heard KISS on the radio I was not impressed until my neighbor Jimmy played the song “Flaming Youth” for me, I was hooked. My friend Greg A. gave me this LP for my Bday since then this has been my favorite of their albums, so much so I am in a KISS Tribute band (KISSin Time MPLS) focusing on this album & time period. Of course I have met these guys. My 3 favorite tracks: “Got To Choose” “Parasite” & “Strange Ways”

  1. Tommy Bolin: “Private Eyes” 1976 -Columbia

Being from Sioux City, Iowa, birth place of Tommy, everyone I knew had this LP, I can remember anytime I walked into our local recordshop “Uncle John” “Bustin Out For Rosie” would inevitably be playing, so how can I not love this album. I have been working on a book on Bolin for many years; someday I will finish it up. My 3 favorite tracks: “Hello Again” “Post Toastee” & “Sweet Burgundy”

  1. Aerosmith: “Rocks” 1976 -Columbia

I had heard this band at school & a church dance, I thought they were pretty good, this was next next new release form them, so I bought it. I think it’s the best of their albums; I met Kramer & Tyler sometime ago.  My 3 favorite tracks: “Lick And A Promise” “Back In The Saddle” & “Sick As A Dog”

  1. Journey “Infinity” 1978 -Columbia

When I lived in Mississippi Van Halen & Journey performed a concert there my friend Greg gave me a cassette with “Infinity” on one side & “Van Halen 1” on  the other. This 4th LP from Journey is another perfect album, I met Rolie & Dunbar from this lineup. My 3 favorite tracks: “Opened The Door” “Winds Of March” & “Feeling That Way”

  1. Cheap Trick: “All Shook Up” 1980 –Epic

My last year of school one of my best friends Brett R. was a huge fan and played this new release for me, I knew their older material, and I was not impressed, but I loved this Album. I have met all of the band members from this lineup. My 3 favorite tracks “Love Comes A Tumblin Down” “Stop This Game” & “I Love You Honey But I Hate Your Friends”

  1. Thin Lizzy: “Thunder And Lightning” 1983 -Warner Bros.

I was already a fan of Thin Lizzy from ’76, but while I was on tour with “High Fever” in the mid-west (somewhere in South Dakota), they released this perfect LP. My 3 favorite tracks: “Bad Habits” “Sun Goes Down” & “Holy War”

  1. Hanoi Rocks: “2 Steps From The Move” 1984 -CBS

About the same time Eric D. gave me the “New York Dolls” record, he informed me of this band from Finland. They had an updated look and sound, I met Monroe  & Yaffa who signed my copy  of this album. This perfect LP was their last release. My 3 favorite tracks: “I Can’ Get It” “Underwater World” & Cutting Corners”

*Vinyl Albums Came to an END in Dec 1987 so I will NOT List Anything After 1987 on this particular list.

It is worth noting I have played songs off of every single one of these albums on my weekly WDGY Radio (Radio) Show “Mr. Zero’s PsychoGello Vinyl Radio Show”. I was talking with someone the other day about my radio show, and I had to bring it their attention that the Sound Exchange- FCC rule states “A Terrestrial Radio Station may not play more than 2 songs by a single artist in a 1 hour period, without receiving a substantial fine” so the beauty of my radio show is I have a Producer (Keith Johnson: Ground Breakers: 4-17) that allows me to do a 1/2 hour show on one artist – band each week. I have done over 63 shows so far for WDGY (and 7 for KFAI). I would like to explain how the idea for my show started, it was all the way back in Summer 1992 in Des Moines, Iowa, I went down to KIOA to interview local legend Dic Youngs, while talking with him I presented the idea of doing a 1 hour radio on the 60s Pop-Duo “Boyce & Hart” Dic replied “Do you have a producer?  Do you have a sponsor? If not, then you cannot, and you can thank Dick Clark, for getting busted back in April 1960  for taking “Payola” and the end result creating the FCC rule in 1962, ‘No more than 2 songs per artist per 1 hour’ So unless you get a producer there’s no way you can do this type of Radio Show”.

I would like to also mention the title of my show came from a combination of 2 “Monkees” TV show Episodes #52 & #58. In episode #52 “Mr. Zero” ran the pawn shop where Peter Tork sold his soul to play the harp. And in episode #58 Mike Nesmith uses the term “Psychojello” to make fun of the current “Psychedelic Hippy Movement” in April 2017 Keith Johnson approached me to create a “Vinyl Radio” show for his program block “Ground Breakers” on WDGY. So I booked some time at “Wishing Star Studios” in St. Paul and created a 30 min Demo of my Show idea on “The Monkees” (it was the quickest show I could slap together in the shortest amount of time). The idea is 1 song from each of the albums in the order of their release, by a single artist, doing the best we can with the time constraints.  I turned it in to Keith and he gave me the green light. My first show aired in June 2017 and we have aired 61 episodes so far, you can hear all of the past episode at www.MrZeroS.Com -Podcast, and check out  upcoming info on the “fb” page “Mr. Zero’s Music  history Show” also you  can read about the artists we cover here at “RosevillePatch.Com” and www.MrZeroS.Com -Blog over 90 articles are available.

Here’s a list of the Artists from the Mr. Zero’s PsychoGello Radio Show (since Jun 2017):

Bangles: 1982 -1989

“Some Dreams Come True: Bangles; 1982 -1989”

WDGY Article #14 (Dr. Rox #89-B)

By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0

So it’s late 1985 into early ’86 I am transitioning from selling stereos & cameras to sellingVinyl Records at RecordShop in Valley West Mall ( I was there until Spring ’91) I had not heard of the ‘Bangles’ until I went to my Manager’s Apt. she had MTV I saw the  “Walk Like An Egyptian’”video … I fell in LOVE. Their album ‘Different Light’ was out at this time, so I played it at work, Fantastic. I loved the title track, “Following” & “Let It Go” I was now a fan … here we go the Bangles;

> How’s The Air Up There: 1980 -1982 <

The band started out as ‘The Bangs’ in 1980 with Susanna Lee Hoffs (17 Jan 1959:L.A.CA.) on Lead Vocals & Rhythm Guitar & “Vicki” Victoria Anne Theresa Peterson -Cowsill(11 Jan 1958: L.A. CA.) on Lead Guitar & Vocals with her younger sister “Debbi”  Deborah Mary Peterson: (22 Aug 1961: L.A. CA.) on Drums & Vocals, the trio found each other in a ad in the local music publication, they rehearsed at Hoffs loft in CA. (Hoffs told me in 2007) The band’s 1st record was the 45 Single  “Getting Out Of Hand b/w Call On Me” released in 1981on DownKiddie Records. In 1982 the band is signed to ‘Faulty Products Records’ and releases the “Self Titled EP” , the band write 4 of the 5 songs on this EP, which is later re-released 1983 on I.R.S. Records. This is the only release with the original Bassist Annette Celia Genevieve Zilinskas (6 Nov 1962: Van Nuys, CA.) who would return to the band in2018. The single for this EP was “Real World (remix)” this version was released on the 6 song CD re-release, there is also a music video for this song. The song I chose to play on my WDGY Radio show was “I’m In Line” sung by Debbi, although I also really like “Want You” from this release.

> All About You: 1984 -85 <

In the Summer of ’83, Zilinskas departs & one Michael Steele (Susan Nancy Thomas: 2 Jun 1955; Pasadena, CA) the Original Bassist with ‘The Runaways’ in 1975 with Joan Jett & Sandy West, (Steele left in ’75 before ‘The Runaways’ 1st release), takes over the Bass duties. The band’s 2nd release ’All Over The Place’ on Columbia Records is released in May 1984,the band writes 9 of the 11 songs, and releases the singles “Hero Takes A Fall b/w Where Were You When I Needed You (non-lp)”  and then “Going Down To Liverpool b/w the instrumental (non-lp)”. The band does 1 song in the film “The Goonies” released in Jun 1985 with the single “I Got Nothing b/w Dave Grusin”, the band also appears in Cyndi Lauper’s video from this film as well. The song I chose for my WDGY show was “Going Down To Liverpool” sung by Debbi, I also really like “All About You” from this album.

> September Gurls: 1986 -87 <

1986 is the year of the ‘Bangles’ as they release their 3rd album ‘Different Light’ the band writes 7 of the 12 songs, and releases a whopping 4 singles starting with “Manic Monday b/w In A Different Light” (written by Prince as he was seeing Hoffs at  the time) a  #2 hit on the Billboard Charts in Apr 1986. The 2nd single “If She Knew What She Wants b/w Angels Don’t Fall In Love” charts at #29 in Jul 1986 and finally their signature song “Walk Like An Egyptian b/w Not Like You” their 1st #1 on the charts in Dec 1986 & then the 4th single“Walking Down Your Street b/w Let It Go” reaches #11 in Apr 1987. The song I chose for the WDGY Show was “Different Light” one of my all time favorite songs (dedicated to someone I used to know), I also really like “Let It Go”.

Sometime in 1990 a cassette is released with the demo versions of many Top 40 Hits of the day, one is “Walk Like An Egyptian” sung by Marti Jones recorded in 1984. The band performs on the TV show “Old Gray Whistle Test” on the BBC in Jul ’86. Their concert from 29 Oct 1986 in Pittsburgh, PA. @ the Syria Mosque, was broadcast on MTV’s “Sat. Nite Concert”. In May 1987 Hoffs plays “Molly Morrison” in the Film “The ALLnighter” later this same year in Nov ’87 the band supply the film “Less Than Zero” with the song & single ”Hazy Of Winter b/w Joan Jett” which rises to #2 in Feb 1988.

> Crash And Burn: 1988 – 1990 <

   The band release their 4th and final album ‘Everything’ in Oct. 1988, this time co-writing the entire album, and releasing 4 singles from this LP, the 1st being  “Eternal Flame b/w What I Meant To Say (non-lp)” their 2nd #1 in Apr 1989 followed by “In Your Room b/w Bell Jar” which climbs to #5 in Jan 1989 , then the 3rd single “Be With You b/w Let It Go”which charts at #30 in Jun 1989, then finally  “I’ll Set You Free b/w Watching The Sky”. The song I chose for my radio show was “Be With You”, though I also really like “Some Dreams Come True”. Interesting note, former KISS Guitarist Vinnie Vincent plays on the song “Make A Play For Her Now” (he had left The Invasion, by this time) the ladies also provide astounding backing vocals on the Tom Petty song: “Waiting For Tonight” which unfortunately goes unreleased for several years. The band appears on “SNL” on 3 Dec 1988performing the standard 2 songs. While I was still living in Des Moines, IA. the band plays Ames in ’89, I didn’t get to go the show, but I do own photos from this show, here is the setlist;

By 1990 the band had split, in part due to Columbia Records pushing Hoffs  to the front of the band as the lead singer which the others were somewhat resentful of.  The VHS & CD ‘Greatest Hits’ is released in May 1990 to complete their contract. Hoffs goes solo for 2 CDs & worked with Matthew Sweet for 3 CDs and some soundtracks. Vicki Peterson forms the ‘Continental Drifters’ for 4 CDs with Susan Cowsill.  Debbi Peterson forms ‘Kindred Spirit’ for 2 CDs. As Hoffs & Sweet are working on the “Austin Powers” film in 1998, the band reunites for a song used in the film “Get That Girl” they embark on a reunion tour in 2000, releasing the CD ”Doll Revolution” in Sep 2003, then later releasing the CD “Glitter Years” in 2005. I saw the band live on 23 Aug 2007 1st Ave in MPLS. I met the 3 Bangles & their new Bass Player Abby Travis (10 Nov 1969 L.A. CA.). Mr. Zero’s Film Reviews: Article #20-E July -2018
By: RLSchwinden

Well, this will be a tough one, as I personally think Denzel Washington is the Greatest Actor of our time. I will watch any film Denzel makes, it seems he can not be in a film that’s bad. So, that being said Denzel Washington (28 Dec 1954: Mount Vernon, NY) reprises his role as Robert McCall, worth noting, this IS The Only squeal he has made to date. I personally can not get enough of these type of Vigilante Good Guy, Kills deserving bad guys, I think most people find it really hard to defend evil doers …. and this film has, drama, action & mystery.

McCall, who lost his wife some time ago and has never really quite gotten over it (indecently, I can relate) , has never been the same since her death, has become a modern day super hero, at night and a “Lyft Driver” by day (clearly “Lyft” forked out a ton of money to fund this film). McCall a quiet man goes around helping those in need, gets caught up with some people from his past, McCall brings it upon himself to sort it all out, and kill the evil doers, all the while helping the good people in his neighborhood.

I think it’s really hard to write an in depth film review without giving it all away. I will say this, another Denzel film that did not disappoint. Defiantly worth the viewing.

Until the next time …. MrZerr0

James Gang: The Year with Tommy Bolin: 1973 -74

Dr. Rox Remember When? Article #88 for WDGY Radio (#13jg)

By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0

When I was a kid growing up in Sioux City in 4th Grade I was attending Old East Jr. then a alternative school known as“ARDVARK” we used to go for swimming lessons across the street at Morningside Collage, I remember seeing a poster on the wall  for an upcoming concert “James Gang” for 12 Dec 1973, now at that time the 2 most popular songs in our circles was “Smoke On The Water” & “Jesus Christ Superstar” so I wasn’t really sure who the ‘James Gang’ were, little did I know my Uncle Jeff’s friend Tommy Bolin was now in the ‘James Gang’, however it does seem like any house I went to back then, they owned a copy of “James Gang: Bang” in their record collection.

> Seems To Me: 1965 – 1972 <

The ‘James Gang’ began with founder James “Jim” Fox (24 August 1947: Cleveland, Ohio) on Drums & Organ who started out as ‘The Starfires’ in High School with Tom Kriss on Bass, they changed the name to ‘James Gang’ in 1966, this is where the name came from “James Fox’s Gang” with Greg Grandillo on Lead Guitar. In Jan 1968 Joe Walsh(Joseph Fidler: 20 Nov 1947: Wichita, Kansas) left the band ‘The Measles’ to be the Lead Guitarist & Lead Vocalist of the‘James Gang’ from 1968 to 1971; for 3 albums, & then in Nov 1969, one Dale Peters: (17 Sep 1948) replaces Kriss on Bass, for 9 albums. Walsh was eventually replaced by Vocalist Roy Kenner: (14 Jan 1948 Toronto, Canada) from 1972 – 1974; for 4 albums & Guitarist Domenic Troiano (17 Jan 1946 – 25 May 2005) for 2 albums, both were from the Canadian band ‘Bush’ who released 1 album in 1970.

In ’73 Troiano left the band, Joe Walsh was still signed to ABC-Dunhill Records as was (at one time: 1969 -70), the Colorado band ‘Zephry’ with Tommy Bolin (1 Aug 1951: Sioux City, Iowa – 4 Dec 1976; Miami), Walsh, in ’72 was with the band ‘Barnstorm’ & Bolin was in the band ‘Energy’. Jim Fox called Walsh to ask for a recommendation for a new guitarist, Walsh recommended this new up and coming kid (Bolin had a nameplate “The Kid” on his Amp Head) from Boulder, this Tommy Bolin. Bolin had left ‘Zephyr’ with his Drummer & friend Bobby Berge in May ’71, to form his “dream”band ‘Energy’, this band had several musical styles, as well as a revolving door of members, and as fantastic as the main stay lineup (Bolin, Berge, Jeff Cook, Stanley Sheldon & Tom Stephenson) was, they just couldn’t seem to land a record deal.

‘Energy’ seeming going nowhere, broke up and Bolin recorded the guitar tracks in May ‘73 for 4 songs for Billy Cobham’s(16 May 1944: Panama) 1st solo record ‘Spectrum’ on Atlantic Records, released in Oct 1973. Bolin gets a call from Fox to come down and audition, the band likes what they hear from Bolin, it doesn’t hurt that Bolin brings with him, a plethora of original songs (usually co-written with Jeff Cook or John Tesar). Bolin joins the ‘James Gang’ from August 1973 to August 1974, for 2 Albums, 2 Singles and over 70 Concerts & several TV appearances.

> Ride The Wind: 1973 <

At this time Bolin is using a (the finish a shoe polish brown) Tele-Strat; the neck of a Telecaster & the body of a Stratocaster (rumored to now be owned by the guitarist from ‘Generation X’ in the UK) 1972 Hi Watt Amp model DR-103made in England, a Sam Ash Fuzz Face pedal, and Sound City 4 x 12 speaker cabinets and his legendary Maestro Echoplex; model EP-3, later Bolin purchases a brand new 1974 black Fender Stratocaster (which he used until the night of his death, now located somewhere on the East Coast) his girlfriend, Karen Ulibarri (she went on to be the head costumer for KISS in the 80s & 90s, I met her through Eric Singer) since 1968 made his stage clothes for him, a Silver Lame’ Suit & a Red Velvet Suit, among others. When Bolin joins ‘James Gang’ they sign a new record deal with ATCO-Atlantic Records. Bolin has many unused songs from his ‘Energy’  1971-73 or ‘American Standard’  1968 days: “Got No Time For Trouble” “Oh Carol (from another time)” “Standing In The Rain (come back to me)” “Jump Back (somebody help me)” “Alexis (come on cool it)” “Bring Our Love Home” “Red Skies” “Must Be Love (bring it on up)” & “Mystery” (I have copies of these recordings from Bolin’s personal reel to reel collection)

The band begin recording their 6th album in Mar ’73, Bolin writes or co-writes 8 of the 9 songs released on the album & sings lead on “Alexis” his 1st released vocal ever. The LP ‘Bang’ (#SD-7037) is released on 1 Sep 1973 and climbs to #122on the Billboard Charts, 2 singles are released from this album; “Must Be Love b/w  Got No Time For Troubles” (#6953)which charts at #54 in Apr ’74 followed by “Standing In The Rain b/w From Another Time” (#6966)

Many do not realize the cover photo was taken when Troiano was still in the band as Tommy’s head imposed over Dominick Troiano’s body in photo on the cover. The Bolin museum in Sioux City, there is a 3 x 3 foot foam core poster of the album cover signed by all 4 members in blue ballpoint pen.

Johnnie Bolin in 2005: “You know Tommy was always asked to join these other bands and when he did he really did revive them. He would come in and he would bring all these songs. Just look at the albums he played on almost all the songs he co-wrote or brought to the band. Also you wouldn’t know this, but the album cover photo of ‘BANG’ Tommy’s head was super imposed over the old guitarist’s body (Domenic Troiano). You see Tommy never wore rings, (even though he was given the ring Hendrix was wearing when Hendrix died,  although Tommy was buried with that same ring) and in the cover photo it shows him wearing rings, that’s because it’s not Tommy’s hand!  Because the band didn’t want to spring for another photo shoot. I was there in the studio the day Tommy recorded his first vocal for release, for the vocal take of ‘ALEXIS’ Tommy had all the lights turned down real low so he could just see the lyrics sheet. He did the vocal and when he was done he turned to me and said ‘How did I do, I mean what did you think?’ I Replied ‘Yeah, man you did fine, it sounded good”

Bolin’s 1st concert with the band was on Wed 26 Sept 1973 in Big Rapids, Michigan. A “Studio Soundboard” recording of the band does exist from Sep-73 in Ohio. James Gang performs about 28 concerts in ’73. Bolin was at least friends with Tim Goodman and perhaps played on Goodman’s recordings in Nov-73 on a Studio Board recording made in Boulder, Colorado, of the songs Seagulls Believe / To Be Free” & “My Baby She’s Lost”

Here is the Setlist (as best as I can tell) to the concert I mentioned previously;

12 December 1973 Wed. 8pm B-Sharp Productions
Morningside Collage Eppley Auditorim $4.oo with opener Danny Matousek (of the Vel Aires)

Funk #49
Ride The Wind
Devil Is Singing Our Song
Must Be Love
Stratus: Medley
a.Tommy’s Guitar Solo
b. Blues Supreme
c. Echoplex Solo
Standing In The Rain
Walk Away

I have been told that Roy Kenner came out on stage wearing a Morningside Collage Band Uniform, and a cast on his leg as he broke his leg jumping off of some guitar amplifiers while filming a TV appearance. The 1st major TV Appearance is on the “Midnight Special” on 18 Dec 1973 Tues. the band performs 3 songs (the standard back then) “Must Be Love” “Standing In The Rain” “Devil Is Singing Our Song” the is a very famous photo of Tommy from this TV show appearance.

28 December 1973 Des Moines, Iowa @ Veterans Memorial Auditorium
Headliner: Johnny Winter (as the opener)

Ace Acela: In 2007
“My friend & I left school after lunch break to go get tickets to the concert that night. We got there early enough that we got back stage, I just walked in like I owned the place. We were wondering around and there were the band’s instruments. I noticed that stuck on Tommy’s guitar case that there was a ‘BARNSTORM’ sticker. I thought that’s funny Joe Walsh left JAMES GANG For BARNSTORM and the new guitarist has A BARNSTORM
sticker on his case.” In case you readers missed this, it was because Walsh & Bolin were friends, the keyboardist & vocalist for Barnstorm: Tom Stephenson was from Bolin’s previous band ‘Energy’. There is a recording of Walsh & Bolin jamming at a recording studio in Boulder, CO. for about 30min.

>Wildfire: 1974 <
There is  a reel to reel tape from Bolin’s personal collection marked  “James Gang Ideas” which contains demo recordings of “Summer Breezes”  “Instrumental  (Journey)” which later becomes “Marching Powder” &  “Spanish Lover”. The 2nd album with Bolin, ‘Miami’ is released in July 1974 and makes it to #97 on charts, the 45 Single released from this LP is “Crusin Down The Highway b/w Miami Two Step”. Bolin releases his 2nd Lead Vocal with “Spanish Lover” the song“Red Skies” is a leftover from Bolin’s ‘Energy’ days, a couple years earlier. I always wondered how prophetic this album is; titled “Miami” and is all Black and Tommy would die in Miami only 2 years and 5 months later.

The band make their 2nd national TV appearance on “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert” on 23 Feb 1974 Sat. performing a whopping 5 songs including:  “Walk Away” “Devil Is Singing Our Song” “Ride The Wind” “Funk #49” “Standing In The Rain (these can be found on YOUTUBE). This was recorded earlier, most likely in Dec ’73, and it’s believed this is where Roy Kenner broke his leg. The bands 3rd TV appearance comes in the form of an interview on the “Old Gray Whistle Test” on 21 May 1974 Tues with Jim Fox & Tommy Bolin.

Andrew Wissing: “There is an audio tape of ‘MIAMI’ with no vocals from Tommy’s personal collection. (from interviews with JIM FOX & DALE PETERS) the instrumental recorded versions of the ‘MIAMI’ songs without Roy Kenner’s vocals exist because, apparently Roy Kenner was tied up with court dates in Los Angeles and could not add his vocal parts until later on, After the band had recorded all the instrumental parts”

A band originally from Cleveland, OH.  being ‘Rainbow Canyon’ releases  “Rollin  In The Rockies” in 1974 on Capitol records #ST-11272  Tommy Bolin provides lead guitar on the 45 single (A side) “Invisible Song b/w Hanover Square”#SP-20132 Produced by: Jim Fox, band member Greg Grandillo was the 1st lead guitarist for the ‘James Gang’ in 1966.

29 June 1974 Sat Traverse City, Michigan @ Fair Grounds Bldg.
J.D.Productions   7:00pm & 10:00pm $5.oo w/ Opener; ‘TALISMAN’

Michael Mordon: Bass Player For ‘TALISMAN’ In 2007 “You see my wife from then & the girlfriend of our drummer went with the promoter to pick up the ‘JAMES GANG’ from the airport. The band was expecting to be picked up in a limousine not a Winnebago, which they had to use as a dressing room. It seems they werent real impressed or real happy about that, or anything else for that matter.  I dont think they werent getting along real well. They didnt have much to say to anybody, much less each other; in addition too Tommy was a little incoherent as he had been up for three days with nosleep.

On Sat 21 August 1974 in Odessa, TX. Tommy performs his last show with the ‘James Gang’ listed among his complaints:

Jim Fox was more interested in collecting license plates than the performance of the band Bolin: “He would thumb through catalogs (of license plates) while I was doing my solo” Dale Peters would be bored on stage and not try to hide it. Roy &Tommy seemed to be at odds competing for the spotlight “I Never Really Got A Chance TBlow MCookies TommyStates.

From Bolin’s personal collection; A set of Lyrics on yellow legal paper with blue felt pen hand written In Tommy’s handwriting (or Jeff Cook or John Tesar):

Mr. Zero’s Film Reviews: Article #19-S July -2018
By: RLSchwinden

As Mr. Zero’s 55113 sponsors at least 7 films a year, (you can find out about FREE Passes & Swag on our social media: fb, Twtter, Pintrest, MySpace & Instagram) including the Local Films of Christopher R. Mihm out of St. Paul, in fact “Guns Of The Apocalypse” is due out in October 2018 (another Mihm Film, I, MrZerr0 am in & will be airing at CRYPTICON MPLS 2018 in Bloomington, MN.) so this is one of the many films Mr. Zero’s Sponsored this year.

I did not know what to expect seeing the ad photo of a Keyboard. I went anyway (because I Love Popcorn) there was a brief Trailer before the film explaining the intentions of the films Producer, which did prepare me for what I was about to see.

The movie is filmed from the perspective of today’s world, from a Computer, a Cellphone & Laptop, using Voicemail, Texting, Social Media Sites & Video Chatting. This was a little distracting at first, but after 10 to 15 minutes, I got used to it. To me this film is clearly geared towards the younger generation; 14 -24, and in my opinion, this film will most likely be a trend setter, in that many films for a while will be produced in the same style.

This notwithstanding, I found this to be a really good film, over all, basically it’s a mystery, with some misdirection & twists, but a really good story overall. I find it really hard to write about New Films, as to not make a “Spoiler Alert”.

In any case if you ask me, this film is worth watching …. MrZerro
