“Films That Hit Close To Home

Dr. Rox remember When?

By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0: Article #104 Nov-2019

For RadiO WFNU St. Paul, MN.

Since I have been writing these articles all the back to April 2011 I have generally covered music artists. Since I currently have 3 different Music Radio show currently airing, “PsychoGello Show” on WDGY 7am Sundays & “Evolation” on WFNU 8am Fridays & Wed. noon & “Hits and History; by year” on every 3rd Monday, which is about to go weekly. I thought I might start to focus on my 2nd Love, Films, especially since many people have me confused as a Video Games & Comics guy (sorry folks, I am NOT that), in all reality I am a Music, Movies & Toys Guy. Now I myself have been in several local films: “Attack Of The Moon Zombies” 2011. ”The Giant Spider” 2013, “Not Quite Lying Eyes” 2013 “Lake Street Detective” 2017 “Guns Of The Apocalypse” 2018, in 2019 “Beast Walks Among Us” and the documentary “Adjust Your Tracking” 2013, as well as involved in a few others “Wilson” “House Of Ghosts” & “Destination Outer Space”

Now I myself Love physical media specifically CDs & DVDs, I will never give them up, I will always have them, even when your streaming is down. I listen to them and watch them over and over, and over. Here are a few movies that hit close to home for MrZerr0.

“High Fidelity”

March 2000: John Cusack,  Iben Hjejle,  Todd Louiso

The story of recordstore owner DJ Rob Gordon’s tragic love life, and what it is like to work in an independent recordstore. This story was so real and close to home for me, many people I knew, who really knew me, thought I wrote this script, or at least Cusack lifted the story of my life. I just met Cusack, I was so excited to meet him and discuss my story about his, film, alas he was less than interested …

“Empire Records”

October 1995: Anthony LaPaglia, Debi Mazar, Robin Tunney

A day of trials and tribulations of the staff of a independent recordstore. This is a lot like what it was like working at a store I was Asst. Mgr. in W. Des Moines, Iowa. Factually based in the mid 90s most Inde stores were either closing or being bought out by the last remaining “chain companies”

“That Thing You Do”

October 1996: Tom Hanks, Liv Tyler, Steve Zahn

A story about “The Wonders” the then typical “One Hit Wonder; Garage Bands” much like Robbinsdale’s own “The Trashmen”.

“This Is Spinal Tap”

Mar 1984: Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer

A documentary of the band “Spinal Tap”  in its fading glory. I have personally lived many of these situations with the bands; “High Fever” “KISSin Time & “NeVeR sAy DiE”

“Almost Famous”

September 2000: Billy Crudup, Frances McDormand, Patrick Fugit

A story about Russel Hammond going on the road when famous bands of the day. Loosly based on Cameron Crowe’s real life adventures being on the road with the Allman Bros.

“Rock Star”

September 2001:  Mark Wahlberg, Jennifer Aniston, Dominic West

The story of hometown boy Izzy Cole joining the famous metal band “Steel Dragon” based loosely on the real life singer Ripper Owens joining Judas Priest, as well as Tommy Thayer joing KISS.

“Singles”

September 1992: Bridgette Fonda, Kyra Segdwick, Matt Damon

A look at the self imposed life dramas of being 20 somethings at the time of  the “Grunge Scene” in Seattle. I knew a lot of people like this back then, they really did seems to be their own worst enemies.

“Private Parts”

March 1997: Howard Stern, Mary McCormack, Paul Giamatti

The story of the long road to stardom for Shock Jock Howard Stern. I was a fan of Stern form the 1st time I ever heard him on the air in Phoenix on radio WXRK.

“Play Misty For Me”

November 1971: Clint Eastwood, Jessica Walter Donna Mills

DJ Dave Garver, has to deal with a delusional fan who has become obsessed with him. I have met a few women like “Evelyn Draper” in my years on this planet.

“Ladies Man”

October 2000: Tim Meadows: Kayrn Parsons, Billy Dee Williams

The mishap adventures of DJ Leon Phelps due to his weakness for women and brutal honesty. Um, a bit like myself. I am a huge fan of Meadows, one of my favorite actors of all times.

“Tapeheads”

October 1988: John Cusack, Tim Robbins, Sam Moore & Jr. Walker

A story of 2 High School Grads trying to make it in the video business. I met Sam Moore in St. Paul in 2005, needless to say I am a huge fan.

“40 Year Old Virgin”

August 2005: Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd

A story about Andy having to make the decision to give up  his vintage toy collection or have a girlfriend for the very 1st time.

“Ghost World”

September 2001: Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi

The story of 2 high scholl grads entering into the world after school and the world of 78 Record collecting. This is where I first saw Johansson, I knew she would become a big star. My fromer Asst. Mgr> gave this film because I reminded her of Seymor.

“Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist”

October 2008: Michael Cera, Kat Dennings, Ari Graynor

The story of how Norah falls in love with Nick because of the Mix CDs he makes his ex-girlfriend” Cera is one of my favorite actors.

“The Wrestler”

January 2009: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood

A true to life story about what is really like to be semi-famous, and not bringing in a ton of money. In 1976 Paul Stanley  of KISS, was asked “What’s it Like to be Rich And Famous”  Paul’s response “Well, I know what it’s like to be Famous” Once I had a girlfriend who was actually jealous of Marisa because I liked so many of Tomei’s films ….

So there you are folks, check ’em out if you want to. Tune in next time when you can read me in the starz. mZ

WFNU: Evolation Show

MrZerr0

1st Anniversary for MrZerr0 on Radio WFNU

Dr. Rox Remember When? (Article #104: Oct-2019)

So it’s the 11th Halloween at Mr. Zero’s 55113, but it is also the 1st Anniversary of MrZerr0 on Frogtown Radio WFNU 94.1 FM and Streaming and at MixCloud.Com.

So it all started back in Summer 1992 in Des Moines, Iowa. I wanted to do a 1 hour radio show on the pop duo “Boyce & Hart”. So I went down to radio KIOA and talked to local legend Dic Youngs, about putting this show together. He informed me without a producer to front the bill to the FCC, this could Not happen. You see back in Feburary 1960 Alan Freed and Dick Clark were investigated and indicted for “Payola” practices; taking money to play certain records (songs) on the radio a certain amount of times per day. So the Government & FCC set up a rule- law back in 1962 that still holds up today. “A Radio Station may not play more than 3 songs by one artist in a 2 hour period, without certain permission”

One day while working at Mr. Zero’s (55113) my friend Tommy said “You know there has got to be a way around that FCC rule, and if theres a way, you are the guy to figure it out” One night in March 2018 I couldn’t sleep due to a disagreement with my then GF, and I thought and thought and I came up with this format, that still follows the FCC rule.

*60 minute Program;

  1. opening theme
  2. an Album Track from the Early Years of the Band
  3. a Song from a Band one of the Members came from
  4. a Solo song from the guitarist
  5. a Solo song from the Drummer
  6. a Cover song of this particular band
  7. an Album Track from the Mid Years of the Band
  8. a Solo song from the Bass Player
  9. a Solo Song from the Singer in the Band
  10. a Solo song from the Keyboard Player in the Band
  11. a Song that inspired this particular Band
  12. an Album Track from the Later Years of this Band
  13. closing theme

Bear in mind this the Loose formula as not every band has all of these elements. This breaks down to roughly; 45 minutes of music with about 10 minutes of dialog. Next, I needed a name. I used 2 words to create the title of my show. “Evolution” and “Revelation” to make the title “MrZer0s Evolation Show” it is the Evolution of a band once you hear who they were you may have a Revelation.

I have aired 15 programs so far on: Tommy Bolin, Beatles, KISS, Monkees, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Queen, Moody Blues, Who, Journey, Gypsy, Cheap Trick, Cream, Heart & Deep Purple.

I play do make shows on the following artists over the next 5 months: Genesis, Boyce & Hart, Doors, Glenn Hughes, Bangles ,Johnnie Bolin, CSN&Y, Byrds, Nilsson, U2, Bob Dylan, Prince, Jefferson Airplane, Rolling Stones, Gos Gos , Turtles, New York Dolls, YES, Yardbirds, Temptations, Motley Crue , Xmas Show.

You can listen to the on air broadcast with my Co-Host Rick Burnett  at Frogtown Radio WFNU 94.1 FM with live Streaming at WFNU .org Fridays 8am and Wednesdays at Noon, every 3rd Monday at 8am for “Hits And History” or go to MixCloud.com under “Mr. Zero’s Evolation Show”

“The Re-Launch of Mr. Zero’s Evolation Show

For Radio WFNU 94.1 “Frogtown Radio”

Mr. Zero’s Articles #101 July 2019

By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0

Hello listeners,

MrZerr0 is back with a new show on Radio WFNU starting Wednesday 31 July 2019 from Noon to 1pm.

It all started in Summer 1992 when I was living in Des Moines, Iowa, I went down to the local “Oldies” station KIOA and talked to legendary DJ Dic Youngs. I informed him I wanted to make a 1 hour Radio Special on the Pop Duo “Boyce & Hart”. Dic asked me “Do you have a producer?” I responded “No, why?”  He replied “Without a producer you cannot play more than 2 songs by 1 artist in a single hour, thanks to Dick Clark & Alan Freed, since all the way back to 1962.” (this is an FCC Rule that still holds true today). Jump ahead to Aug 2012 DJ Liberty Finch & DJ Izzy, asked me to guest on their weekly (and just recently retired July 2019) “PopShop Show” on KFAI I responded “All my life” she asked “Got any ideas” I said “Sure, 1 hour on the Monkees and 1 hour on Boyce & Hart”  she replied “Sorry, that cannot happen” I said “Oh, is that FCC rule still in place” she said “Yes indeed” Move forward to Feb. 2018 my friend Tommy S. (3 Sides Of The Coin: Podcast) was hanging out in Mr. Zero’s 55113, and musing “You know, there has to be a way to do that 2 Hour Monkees Show, you want to do, live on the Radio, I have to think if there’s way to do it you can figure it out.”

So lying awake one night in Mar 2018, I couldn’t sleep (due to woman troubles) it came to me! “No more than 2 songs by one artist in a single hour” Sooooo what if I play 2 songs by the Band, 2 Solo songs by each Member (4 in total to equal 8 songs) 2 Cover Versions, and round it out with 2 songs by related Artists. That is a full hour, and then just do the same thing in the 2nd hour and That Is A 2 Hour Show abiding by the FCC Rule! (Thanks Tommy S.) So my concept was born. I performed the very 1st show of this kind in Mar 2018 on KFAI with DJ Izzy (also a huge Monkees fan).

Then in November 2018, I was asked by Local Radio WFNU 94.1 fm “Frogtown Radio” in St. Paul, MN. 55104, to come up with a weekly morning radio show. So I just presented the idea I came up with in March, I just needed a name. I decided upon “Evolation” a variation of “Evolution” as in the progression of a particular band. From Nov 2018 to April 2019 I presented 24 Episodes of “Evolation”. Then in July 2019 the station asked that I record a new version of the show to be aired in “their” prime time “Noon to 1pm” And So this Wednesday 31 July 2019 from Noon to 1pm, we re-launch the “Evolation Show” only this one will be prerecorded and occasionally rebroadcast. Paul Stanley: Solo Years

30 June 2019

“Paul Stanley the StarChild o f KISS”

Dr. Rox Remeber When? for WDGY

Article #100 June 2019

By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0

> Opening <

When I was a kid going to 7th grade in Brandon (Jackson) Mississippi I was into bands like Monkees, Beatles & Steppenwolf, then my neighbor Jimmy S. played “Sweet Pain” by KISS for me in the Summer of ’76, then he handed me the album cover (Destroyer), I was blown away. This was the kind of band I had been looking for. Since my Dad was a drummer I immediately took to Peter Criss, but later I felt more a kin to Ace, but as I could not play Lead Guitar, I found myself studying very hard to copy Gene’s Vocal style as his voice gave me shivers. But Alas back in 1987 when putting together my 2nd KISS Tribute Band “Black Diamond” I found I was pushed into the role of Paul Stanley, as I could sing really well and Play Rhythm Guitar at the same time. moving ahead to 2013 I met a guy wanting to form a new KISS Tribute band and was in need of a Paul Stanley, so here I went again, reprising the role of Paul, and have for the past 6 years now. On Sunday 30 June 2019 my WDGY Radio Show “Mr. Zero’s PsychoGello Show” Episode #99 was on “Paul Stanley: Solo Years” so I felt it only  fitting my 100th Article should be on the same subject. So I will briefly cover the solo years of Paul Stanley:

 > The Beginnings <

He was born Stanley Bert Eisen, on 20 Jan 1952 in Manhattan, NYC, but grew up in Queens, NYC, sometime in 1972 he decided to go by “Paul Stanley” (not to be confused with the TV Director Paul Stanley: 1922-2002) his father’s parents were from Poland and his father William was born in April 1920 and his mother Eva was born in Berlin, Germany 16 Nov 1923 – 29 Sep 2012, and immigrated to Holland in 1939 when the Nazi’s invaded Poland, sometime in the late 40s Eva moved to NYC. Paul has an older sister Julia who has a daughter and 2 children. Paul has been married twice 1st in 1992 -2001 to Pamela Bowen they have a son Evan Shane: 1994. His 2nd wife Erin Sutton, together they have 3 children; Colin – 2006, Sarah – 2009 & Emily – 2011.

Though Paul was born with Microtia, a malformed right ear causing him to be deaf in that ear (he had plastic surgery in 1982 to create a new right ear) he loved music and began his musical career in the mid 60s after seeing the Beatles and the Rolling Stones on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ in 1964 and 65.  Paul’s 1st band was ‘Uncle Joe’ in 1966 with his friend Matt Rael and Neal Teeman, they recorded at least 1 song “Stop  Look To Listen”. His next band was the ‘Post War Baby Boom’ 1967 -1968 with Matt’s brother John Rael they also recorded at least 1 song “Never Living Never Loving” his 3rd band was ‘Tree’ in 1969 with Stephen Coronel (21 Mar 1951: Manhattan) a former band-mate of one Eugene Klein (Gene Simmons) from the bands ‘Long Island Sounds’ and  ‘Bullfrog Bheer’ ‘Cathedral’ and ‘Coffee’ it was Coronel that introduced Stanley to  Simmons, together Esien, Klein & Coronel formed ‘Rainbow’ in 1970 which evolved into ‘Wicked Lester’ in 1971. In late 1972 Stanley and Simmons added Peter Criss to form ‘KISS’ and early 1973 then added Ace Frehley. KISS has had 24 songs on the Billboard Charts, released over 35 albums and 60 singles.

> Interactions <

I have met Paul several items over the years the 1st time was in Dec 1982 in Sioux City, Iowa I caught up with him before the show and was able to talk with for about 20 min. I asked him about his: 1.Midnight Special Guitar.  2. Stephen Corornel.  3. His Family.  4. The set list from 1974 to 1975 and into 1976.  5. The previous nights set list. 6. Ace Frehley being replaced by Vincent Cusano. 7. His new animal pattern on his guitar and boots. I was thinking about covering this “sort of interview”, but this would be a whole page in its self.

The almost 2nd time was in Des Moines, Iowa and  I actually missed him, as Roadie Romeo Bonilla brought Paul into my store to say “Hello” I was not there as it was my only day off that week in Dec 1987, a real bummer of a story.

The 3rd time was through Label Rep. David K. in Oct 1990 again in Sioux City. I was able to ask Paul about his new “Record Deal” with Sony Music, he explained with was a Publishing Deal writing songs for other artists such as Cher, Karen Newman, Paul Dean (Loverboy), Voodoo X, Robin Beck, Crown Of Thorns, Craig McLachlan, House Of Lords, Wildside, War Babies, Jeff Paris and Bonfire to name  a few. And about certain songs he had written such as “Black Diamond”.

The last time was in Nov 2003 in Minneapolis through record rep Sharyl B. I asked him about the KISS “Alive Symphony” CD and the book I contributed to “Alive Forever” 2002 Billboard Books. There is a photo of me and the band on fb from this night.

As Paul has been a member of KISS since 1972, he has primarily worked within KISS, however he has released:

> Album Releases <

  1. ‘KISS: Paul Stanley’ released in Sept 1978 his 1st solo album, which was the 3rd best selling of the 4 KISS solo albums with a one word review from the time “Kiss”
  2. ‘Live To Win’ released in Oct 2006 his 2nd solo CD.
  3. “One Live KISS” released in Oct 2008 his “Live DVD” for the tour of his 2nd solo CD.
    4. “Soul Station” to be released in 2019, a “R&B Covers” album of Paul’s favorite R&B songs.
  4. “Face The Music” his 1st Book released in April 2014 on HarperOne
  5. “Backstage Pass” his 2nd Book released in April 2019 on HarperOne

> Outside Projects <

Paul also worked on many other projects while in KISS, I will cover these few right now.

In the Early days of KISS the band played a song Paul wrote “Life In The Woods” in June 1973, which was not released on an album. (KISSin Time plays parts of it in practice)

In Aug 1975 Paul & Co. recorded “Mistake” and “It Ain’t The Smoke” at Magna Carta Studios in NYC. Intended for what would be ‘Destroyer’ these 2 songs have never been on an album

Paul produced the band “New England” 1st album in 1979, they opened for KISS on the 1979 “Return Of KISS Tour”.

In late 1980 Paul recorded the song “Deadly Weapons” for the album that was suppose to follow ‘Unmasked’ (Gene later used the title in 1985)

Paul sang on the song ”Falling In Love” on the 1981  ‘Balance’ album with Bob Kulick & Pepe Castro.

He was the 1st to appear in a film without makeup, though most of his scene was cut in “Young Doctors In  Love” from July 1982; as a Singer who swallowed his microphone. (2 years before Gene Simmons’ film debut).

In Aug 1983 Paul and Vinnie Vincent wrote a song titled ”You, It’s You” that did not make it onto the album “Lick It Up”

In late 1983 into 1984 Gene Simmons Produced a Wendy O’ Williams solo album “W.O.W.” using unused demos from KISS including the song “Ready To Rock” with guitar by Paul. Gene, Ace, Eric Carr & Vinnie Vincent also appear on the album.

As KISS took the later part of 1986 off, Paul considered making his 2nd solo LP he recorded  the following “Sword And Stone” “Time Traveler” “When Two Hearts Collide” “Best Man For You” “Jump The  Gun”

In Aug 1988 Paul & Gene appear in the film ”Decline Of Western Civilization Part 2 Metal Years”.

In Oct 1989 Paul sings on the soundtrack for the film “Shocker” on the title song with Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. Paul’s song “Sword And Stone” was covered by ‘Bonfire’ on the same album.

In 1989 Paul appeared on the MTV show “Mouth To Mouth” and performed ”Rock And Roll All Nite” solo.

Sometime in May 1992 Paul and  Dave “Snake” Sabo of: SKID ROW wrote “Do You Wanna Touch Me Now” which did not get released however the song “Clock Strikes” was released by; ‘Wildside in May 1992

In Jan 2008 Paul released a duet with Sarah Brightman (14 Aug 1960: Hertfordshire) the song “I Will Be With You (where the lost ones go)”

In Dec 2014 Paul filmed a commercial for “Folgers Coffee” which was apparently not released.

Back in 2016 someone saw me in a “KISSin Time” Post and sent me “Time Limit Link” that had a song that Paul Stanley sang and played on. I passed it around to try to find out who it was, alas the link expired before I could identify it.

Then in April 2016 Paul recorded a song with Ace Frehley, the ‘FREE’ song “Fire And Water”

Paul went on to write songs for, or work with these other artists as well: Stan Bush, Crown Of Thorns, Lenita Erickson, S.Manning & P. Rafferty, Christine Lunde, Eddie Money, Garbo Talks, KUNI, Silbermond, Click 5, Bad Candy, Erik Gronwall, PUSHKING.

The Music Of Mr. Zero’s fro the Past 10 Years

“The Music Of Mr. Zero’s”

WDGY Article #99 May-2019

By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0

In March of 2009 I had left my former “Used Entertainment” employer and some Business partners and I, founded “Mr. Zero’s Inc.”  I had taken an idea from my former Supervisor, that we needed a name and a character to go with it. So I chose “Mr. Zero” for the TV Show “The Monkees” from Episode #52 “Devil and Peter Tork” from Feb 1968. Mr. Zero owned the Pawn Shop where Tork accidentally sold his soul to the Devil for the ability to play the harp. So my business partner “Comics Expert” Aaron McF. came up with the 1st mascot, in 2010 “Mr. Zero” a comic character who fights crime by throwing records at the villains, his main nemesis is “The Scratcher”. Shortly after that one of our 1st customers Peggy S. came up with “Mr. Zero” based loosely on “The Joker” in 2011, I think. I met Jose Delbo, who worked on “Yellow Submarine” & “Batman” through a fellow illustrator, in Spring 2012, I believe, and we were able to persuade him to create our most famous “Mr. Zero” based on “Beatles: Yellow Submarine”.

At some point early on, a customer was in the Shop, and began singing “My Hero, Zero” from “Grammar School Rock” by: Bob Dorough from January 1973. We decided we needed a Theme Song, so we loosely used this until my long time friend and customer Wes W. came in the shop, sometime around late 2010, I think, and asked “Did you pick the name “Mr. Zero’s” from the Keith Relf/ Yardbirds song “Mr. Zero” (a #50 hit from May 1966), I replied, “No, I am unaware of this song” But, from then on we used it, un-officially, that is ….

> 2011: Jesus Chrysler <

I met a guy named Bakko here in the store, we became fast friends in 2010, and he actually got me to sit in with his Local Original Band “Jesus Chrysler” in Oct. 2010. Unfortunately, I can not quite recall when he brought in our 1st official; original theme song “Mr. Zero’s” it was either late 2011 or early 2012. But this kicked off a trend for us. Though he is in the Band “Jesus Chrysler” I am not sure if the other members played on it or not. I did use this on my very 1st Guest Radio Show “The Pop Shop” on KAFI 90.3 fm & 106.7 am in Oct. 2012 and many other radio shows since then. We also used it as an opening theme for my Cover Band “MrZERo” a time or 2. Jesus Chrysler’s CDs are for sale at Mr. Zero’s.

> 2012: Mitch Anderson <

In late 2012, Drummer, Vocalist Dave Columbus, who I had met though a Guitarist Mitch the week we open the shop. Finally convinced me to get back into playing live music again, with Zach Plese on Guitar, who I met though his wife a customer of the store and Mitch Anderson on Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals, and I on Vocals & Bass, we formed “MrZERo” in Oct. 2012, if I am not mistaken. After a show or 2, Mitch brought up having our own Theme Song, so Mitch wrote & recorded “Gotta Check It Out MrZERo” in late  2012, I believe.

> 2013: Mark Jackson <

A year or 2 after we opened the Shop, these group of young boys from the local Catholic School, started coming in and hanging out, I dubbed them the “Stand By Me Gang” turns out 2 of them were really good musicians, Gavin on Bass and Mark J. on Guitar, their band was “Reaper” as I recall. So I asked Mark to create a new theme song for us, he brought in “The Place To Go” in late 2013.

>2014: Norrell & John 10th <

I met the “Wizard Terrance” from the band “Princess Wishing Star” very early on when the Shop opened he was looking to buy reel to reel tapes for his recording studio and gave me a autographed copy of his record featuring a cover of “The Monkees” song “Porpoise Song” so for the 5th anniversary I asked him to come up with a theme song for us. He recorded a song “I Will Be There” with Norrel & Mandy from “The Band Famous” he took that song and re-worked it into  “Mr. Zero’s Record Store” in early  2014.

As we approached our 5th anniversary I wanted to make the most of it so I asked my friend John the 10th, from the band “Snellabration” who I had met though “Paul the Bookman” of the St. Paul Punk Band “Frances Gumm” if John 10th he would create a theme song for us, and so he brought to us “5 4 3 2 1 Zero” in Summer  2014. John 10, gave us a new re-mix version for our 10th anniversary in 2019.

> 2015: Westside Mikey <
In high school (West High Sioux City) I was musical friends with Mike Langley we had a band the “Magic Acid Band” at the time his Dad (Jack) won an award for a local restaurant commercial. Since Mike has released many CDs over the years, I had the idea to ask Mike to create a theme song for us. In 2015 “Westside Mikey” gave us “Mr. Zero’s, Mr. Zero’s”.

> 2016: Phil-Tyr & Wailin Gregg <
Mitch’s son Tyr was in a band with Will, in 2016 I was looking for a new theme song and I had an idea. So I came up with an outline, I wanted and R&B song with the hook-chorus “Some People Just Don’t Get It” and so, “Phil-Tyr” delivered the theme song of that very title.

Later this year in 2016 a customer came in looking for a certain vintage toy, and we had one in the box, he decided he needed to buy this item, as he just came from shooting a local commercial he had some cash.  As he walked up to the cash register he said “Whew … watch out when you come to Mr. Zero’s because you’re gonna find it” I offered “You wanna do another one (commercial)?” he agreed, so I wrote the lyrics and had the idea to do a Blues based theme, because so many customers come into the store looking for Blues records from the 30s, 40s & 50s, he came up with the music and “Wailin Gregg” gave us “When You Go To Zero’s”.

> 2017: Dennisota, Amy Fauble & PsychoGello <

Now Dennis M. had been coming to Mr. Zero’s almost from the beginning in 2010, but at some point he started to come in making up his own words to whatever song was playing over the stereo in the store. This one day he was on to something and came up with a great one, but we did not have a way to record it that day. When I got him to come back on a later date, sometime in 2017, he had forgotten the one I loved. So I had an idea. Jack White announced in the film “It Might Get Loud” from 2008 that his favorite song is “Grinnin In Your Face” from 1965 or 1943? by Son House  (Mississippi: 1902-1988), I heard this and thought “What a cosmic joke, this is just barely a song, as I hardly call hand claps & foot stomps an instrument” So my idea was to create a “Song” with just as little to offer as “Grinnin In Your Face” as another joke. I talked with Dennis for a few minutes and he and I came up with “Goin Ta Mista Zero’s” by “Smokin Blind Dennisota”

In 2017 I created my WDGY Radio Show “Mr. Zero’s PsychoGello Show” I was recording at “Wishing Star Studios” in St. Paul with the “Wizard Terrance” he had written and recorded a song titled “Let’s Build A Wall Around NE Minneapolis”  (https://soundcloud.com/wishingstarstudio/lets-build-a-wall) one night in Sep or Oct. 2017 I went into the studio to record a new radio show, and Terrance had re-written the song as “Mr. Zero’s In St. Paul” he brought in local artist Amy Dawn Fauble to sing the lead vocal and in Dec. 2017 it was finished.

For our 8th anniversary at Mr. Zero’s I had been bugging a local band to create a new theme song, and they came back with “You’re a musician and song writer, why don’t you make one” so I thought, “OK, I will” I thought about it a few days and decided I wanted it like 60s Pop-Rock, I kind of wrote the chord progression 1st and later wrote the lyrics and melody while I was brushing my teeth one day before work. We recorded with the studio band at “Wishing Start Studios” and released it as “Nerd Is The Word” by PsychoGello in Oct.  2017.

> 2018: Crash Jackson & PsychoGello <
In 2013 Mitch’s nephew Jackson worked here in the store we had him record a video for us doing “Not Fade Away”. Jack came into to see me one time in 2018, we were talking and I could see he had really progressed as a musician, and he was always very creative, so I asked him to come up with the new theme song, in a few weeks he delivered ”Mr. Zero’s Oh Yea” with his band “Conspiracy Business”

At the same sessions we (PsychoGello) cut “Nerd Is The Word” in Sep. 2017 we recorded an instrumental jam we titled “New American Engineer”. In Dec 2018, I recorded a vocal line for it and created a new Theme Song “Psycho Zero”

> 2019: Missy Marrz & Shock Trigger <
I met Missy in 2010 through my old neighbors of 10 years. At 1st she started out being the Model for Mr. Zero’s then one day in 2014 we were chatting between photo shoots, she picked up my White SG and sang a song she wrote titled “Recycled Words” I had no idea she was such a great musician and song writer. So after much prodding we got Missy Marrz to write and record “Mr. Zero & Me” in April 2019. I have played it many times on our Radio Shows this year. I have since produced a Demo Recording for her and performed live with her several times over the years, Missy even performed in Mr. Zero’s on “National RecordStore Day” in 2017.

One day a few years ago a guy (Tony) wondered into Mr. Zero’s, looked around and said “You sure have a lot of Tommy Bolin merchandise in this store” I responded that’s because I am from his hometown and his neighborhood” the guy answered “Me, too” I asked “What side of town as all we old time Siouxlanders do” he replied “Morningside” we began to talk about the old days back home, and became good friends. Turns out he is in a band “Shock Trigger” they asked us if they could use our Logo on their posters I said sure, can you come up with a theme song for us, Tony asked “What did you have in mind?” so I came up with an idea and wrote out the lyrics and the arrangement in a few minutes Tony took this back to the band and wrote the music & melody, and presented us with “Mr. Zero’s Zero”. We had the band “Shock Trigger” play in the store on “National Record Store Day” this year in 2019.

Now, recently Zach P. Lead guitarist of “MrZERo” has turn in a new instrumental theme to be used on our WDGY & WFNU radio shows.

There you have it folks the history of the many theme songs Mr Zero’s 55113 has used & continues to use to this day. You can hear them all, simply go to www.MrZeroS.Com – Podcast key and there is Episode #2009 which contains them all. Hear MrZerr0 on Sundays 7am on WDGY & every 3rd Monday 8:30am for “Hits And History” with Rick Burnett.

Tune in Next Time … MrZerr0

8 Years of Music Articles: BUZZ & Patch

“8th Anniversary Of Music History Articles”

WDGY-Patch: (Article #98-A) April 1998

By: RLSchwinden aka: MrZerr0

So all the way back in Fall 2008 while I was with a different “Used Media Store” I saw on the “Sales Reports” the CD sales were declining and that Vinyl Record sales were increasing. I brought it up to the owner at that time, we should open a 2nd location in St. Paul, he did not agree after a few months he suggested I move on and open my own store, so I left and opened my own store using a name I suggested to my now former employer “Mr. Zero’s” I took the name from “The Monkees” Episode #52 “Devil & Peter Tork” from 5 Feb 1968, the one where Peter Tork (who attended Carlton College in Northfield) accidentally sells his soul the Devil for the ability to play the harp. Later on I had Jose Delbo, (who worked on The Beatles: “Yellow Submarine”  Nov -1968) create our mascot “Mr. Zero” in fact he was one of many who created their own version of “Mr. Zero” artists such as Peggy Sorrell, Aaron McFarland, Tom Nguyen, Angel Medina,  John Mundt, Scott Rolfs, Kurt Jess, W.C. Carani, Dave Wheeler, Chris Jones,  Mike Hoffman, Gordon Purcell, Tom Richmond, Willis, Nance, Taylor J. Ellis, P-Mann, Ron Larson, Mike Lone, Amanda Dahl, Bonnie Eenigenburg, Matt Hintz, Aaron Fletty, B.C. Wind, Jamie Coker, Tim Tapp,  Erik Burnham. With a “Plastic Figure” made by: Dean Hansen, a “Puppet” made by Gorden Smudder, a “Felt Doll” made by Catherine Bryant, a “Clay Figure” made by Susie Kangaroo, and a “Cookie” made by Katherine & Clarice.

In Feb 2009, I was at a “Record Show” when a Record Dealer gave me the idea to open a “Consignment Record Store” so that between “Record-Shows” he had a place to keep his inventory. So I went on a mission I contacted dozens of “Product Dealers” I knew all over the mid-west and in the end, I pulled together: Go Johnny Go, Crazy Robb, Paul The Bookman, Twin Vintage Antiques, a few of friends of mine who were getting divorced and need to sell their collections, and many friends, a few I should mention: Dr. Renee & Chris, Jose & his family, Tim & Mary Lee, Christine 16, Michele & Todd, Lamar,  Bonz, Jr.& Computer Steve. On 14 April 2009 we Inc. “Mr. Zero’s” and a short time later opened “Mr. Zero’s” on 1744 Lexington Ave. N. Roseville 55113. We had our 1st “Black Friday Sale” in Nov 2009.

“Mr. Zero’s” & myself were featured in “City Pages” in Feb 2011, and St. Cloud DJs Don Anger & Izzy Presley, came down to interview me for their Radio Station “Rockin 101” & St. Cloud “Weekend Buzz” magazine. And in their own words “This Guy is too interesting, to let slip away, so the wanted to get me on the radio with them, but it was decided to have me write monthly music column for the “Weekend Buzz” so exactly 8 years ago this month I delivered my very 1st Article on one of my favorite artists “Jimi Hendrix”  In Feb 2013 I was interviewed by Scott Carlson for the “Roseville Patch” and they asked if they could also run my Music Column on the “Roseville Patch.com” and so we have. In April 2017 I was asked to create a “Vinyl Radio Show” for Radio WDGY 740am & FM: 92.1, 103.7, 107.1, my 1st Episode aired in June 2017 as “Mr. Zero’s PsychoGello Vinyl Radio Show” , many of these radio shows coincided with my “Buzz” & “Patch” articles. Then in Nov 2018 I was asked to create another Radio Show for Radio WFNU 94.1 Frogtown Radio, so my 1st Epiosde of Mr. Zero’s Evolation Show” aired in Nov 2018, and likewise many of these shows coincided with my “PsychoGello Show” and “Buzz” & “Patch” articles. So I will now cover, in brief, my articles, and the corresponding Radio Shows, so if you love a certain artist, there is plenty of information to absorb. You can read the articles on “Roseville Patch” or at www.MrZeroS.Com “Blog” and you can listen to past “PsychoGello Shows” at www.MrZeroS.Com “Podcast” the “Evolation Shows” were once loaded to MixCloud but have since been lost, however you can get a complete background on all my shows on “fb” at “Mr. Zero’s PsychoGello Music History Show”

So there it is fans, it is quite an extensive list, but necessary, because you can pick an Band or Artist, locate the Article , then track down the corresponding Radio-Podcast Show, and learn all about that subject matter. Now, I must go on record, there is plenty of room for corrections and additions, and I welcome any input, however this is a really good starting point. My suggestion find and Article, locate the Show, get into and enjoy.

Until the next installment … hear me in the stars.

Grand Funk Railroad: 1969 -1976

Episode #86

“Grand Funk Railroad: The American Band”

Dr. Rox Remember When?” Article #96 March 2019 for WFNU 94.1 fm

By: RLSchwinden Aka MrZerr0

So when I was a kid growing up in Sioux City, most of the music I listened to was introduced to me by my Aunts; Debby, Cathy or Uncles Jeff & John. This band is no exception to that situation. My Uncle John used to babysit us on Saturday nights, he would let me stay up and watch “(Don Kirshner’s) In Concert” and one night ‘Grand Funk Railroad’ was one of the artists on the show early 1973, (the other artist I remember from roughly the same time period was ‘Black Oak Arkansas) and Farner walks out with his long straight hair and shirtless at the time HE was the epitome of “Rock Star” Farner & Jim Dandy (BOA) we the coolest looking guys on the planet Earth! Then it was Summer ’73 my Aunt Cathy used to babysit my sisters while my Mom worked, one weekend Cathy brought over the 45 Single (w/ picture sleeve & pressed on yellow vinyl) “We’re An American Band” this song moved me! I was now a fan of Grand Funk. Signed to Capitol Records in 1968 they had 19 Billboard Charting songs, and released 17 albums and 25 Singles And so let us  begin, a brief history of ‘Grand Funk Railroad’

 > The Pack: 1964 – 1967 <

The story begins with the artist one Terry Knight (Terrance Richard Knapp: 9 Apr 1943; Lapeer, MI – 1 Nov 2004) a former DJ on WTAC, who made the 1st big USA push early on for ‘The Rolling Stones” who later went on to a music career had a #46 billboard hit with”I Who Have Nothing b/w Numbers” in Jan 1967 and also released 3 albums & 10 Singles from 1965 to 1967 as ‘Terry Knight & The Pack’ . The band’s Drummer was Donald George Brewer (3 Sep 1948; Flint, Mich.) and later the band’s 2nd Guitar player was Mark Fredrick Farner (29 Sep 1948; Flint, MI.). When Terry left to go solo, Brewer & Farner carried on as ‘The Pack’ and later ‘The Fabulous Pack’ until in 1968 they recruited the 2nd Bassist for “? Mark & The Mysterians” Mel Schacher (Melvin George Schacher: 8 Apr 1951; Flint, MI.) to form ‘Grand Funk Railroard’ as play on words from the ‘Grand Trunk Railroad’ that ran through their hometown of Flint.

> Are You Ready: 1969 -1970 <

The band make their major debut in July 1969 at the “Atlanta Pop Festival” with the help of Terry Knight, who is now a Producer at Capitol Records, the band is signed to Capitol and they release their 1st album in Aug 1970 ‘On Time’ with their 1st charting 45 Single “Time Machine b/w High On  A Horse” which hits  #49 in Nov 1969 followed by their 2nd single “Heartbreaker b/w Please Don’t Worry” the “B-Side” sung by Brewer, which goes to  #72 in March 1970 (yes after their 3rd single is released)

In the 60s & 70s some bands, though not many released more than 1 album a year (starting in the 80s that switched to 1 every 2 years) the band release their 2nd album ‘Grand Funk’ in Dec 1969  with the 45 single “Mr. Limousine Driver b/w High Flaootin Woman” which charts at #97 in  Dec 1969. Grand Funk Railroad was known for touring non-stop. One concert appearance they made here in the Twin Cities was:

20 March 1970 Wednesday: Bloomington, MN. Met Center Rock Festival

Are You Ready
Paranoid
In Need
Mean Mistreater

Mark Says Alright
I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)
Hooked on Love

Inside Looking Out

Into the Sun

This is the setlist, as far as I can tell for this show

One thing worth noting is Brewer would run around his drumset during his drum solo.  While I am a huge fan of the band I not sold on Farner’s choice of a guitars a Musicraft Messenger, as far as I can tell this is a cheap hollow-body heavily doctored and a Micro Frets Guitars Custom, which may be a great guitar, to me it has a ‘cheap’ sound to it, but this is what gave Farner a distinction in his guitar tone, I have seen photos of Farner playing a white Gibson SG, also Farner played Keyboards live in concert..

Their 3rd album is the one that really hooked me. ‘Closer To Home’ was released in June 1970 with the singles “Sin’s A Good Man’s Brother b/w Nothing Is The Same” and one of their most famous songs “Closer To Home/ I’m Your Captain b/w Aimless Lady” which rose to  #22 on the charts in Oct 1970, worth noting the single version 5:31min, about half the length of the album version. the band being known so well for their “Live Concerts” release a double album  ‘Live Album’ in Sep 1970, though released in Sep, the material for this record was recorded in June, before the ‘Closer To Home’ LP was released. The single was a “Live Version” of “Mean Mistreater b/w Mark Says Alright” which reaches #47 in Jan 1971.

> 1971 – 1972: I Can Feel Him In The Morning <

The band’s 5th LP is probably one of my favorites; ‘Survival’ is released in Apr 1971 and  came with 3 photos one of each member, dressed as a “Caveman” in the album. The singles for this LP are: “Feelin Alright b/w I Want Freedom” that charts at #54 in May 1971, followed by “Gimme Shelter b/w I Can Feel Him In The Morning” the “B-Side” sung by Brewer, that makes to #61 in Sep 1971. As mentioned earlier a few bands back then released 2 albums a year, Grand Funk was able to pull this off as they occasionally recorded cover songs as well as every album seemed to have a song that was 7 to 10min long! ‘E Pluribus Funk’ (mine is signed by Farner) is released in Nov 1971 with 3 singles released from this LP  “People Let’s Stop The War b/w Save The Land” the 2nd one “Footstompin Music b/w I Come Tumblin” which makes it to #29 in Feb 1972,

followed by “Upsetter b/w No Lies” that charts at  #73 May 1972.

In late ’71 the band became dissatisfied with the control their manager Terry Knight had over the band, for example Knight releases the 1st “Best Of” with the double LP ‘Mark, Don & Mel’ in early 1972, seemingly without their permission, so the band fired Knight. Due to this entangled legal battle with  Knight the band adds a 4th member and resumes as ‘Grand Funk Railroad’ the add Keyboardist Craig Frost (20 Apr 1948; Flint) before this Farner played the keyboards, later both Brewer & Frost would end up in Bob Seger’s band from 1977-96. Their 8th LP   ‘Phoenix’ is released in Sep 1972 with the single “Rock N Roll Soul b/w Flight Of The Phoenix” which makes  #29 on the charts in Nov 1972.

> 1973 – 1974: Stop Lookin Back <

The band makes a TV appearance on ABC’s “In Concert” on 19 Jan 1973. The band battling Knight, needed a hit so they recruit Todd Rundgren for the next 2 LPs, they were correct in choosing Todd, ‘We’re An American Band’ is released in  July 1973 with their 1st “#1 Hit” with the single “We’re An American Band b/w Creepin” the “A-Side” sung by Brewer, in Sep 1973  followed by a 2nd single “Walk Like A Man b/w The Railroad” this “A-Side” is also sung by Brewer, that charts at #19 in Jan 1974.The band are on fire in late ’73 into ’74, they make a 2nd TV appearance on the show “In Session” in ’74 (probably for the video of “We’re An American Band”). The band’s 10th LP ‘Shinin On’ is released in Mar 1974 with a 3D cover and a punch-out pair of 3D Glasses. Their 2nd #1 Hit is “Locomotion b/w Destitute And Losin” is released in May 1974 followed by the #11 Hit;  “Shinin On b/w Mr. Pretty Boy” the “{A-Side” sung by Brewer, in Aug 1974. their 2nd album of ’74 is ‘All The Girls In World Beware’ produced by Jimmy Inner in Dec. this is also released on  and Quad 8-Track (the precursor to 5.1 stereo) with 2 more Top 10 singles in: “Some Kind Of Wonderful b/w I’ll Be Loving You” a  #3 in Feb 1975, followed by   “Bad Time b/w Good And Evil” charting at  #4 Jun in  1975, this song was written about Farner’s divorce.

> 1975 -1976: Dues <

After several years on top, things start to wind down for the band in ’75. They release their 2nd “Live Album” with ‘Caught In The Act’ released in Aug 1975. The 1st LP to be released in ’76 was the last of their original Capitol releases, ‘Born To Die’ was released in January of that year, with the singles; “Take Me b/w Genevieve” the “A-Side” sung by Brewer, which charts at #53 in Feb 1976, followed by “Sally b/w Love Is Dyin” the “A-Side” was written for Actress Sally Kellerman that hits #69 inApril 1976. It was Frank Zappa that convinced the band to release 2nd LP this year is ‘Good Singin Good Playin’ released in Aug 1976, and the one and only on MCA Records, with the singles; “Can You Do It b/w 1976” their last charting single at  #45 in  Sep 1976, followed by “Just Couldn’t Wait” b/w “Out to Get You”  with Frank Zappa on the “B-Side” their 3rd LP for the year was more of an epitaph to the end of Grand Funk Railroad, as ‘Grand Funk Hits’ is released by Capitol Records in 1976, containing only post ’72 material, due to the legal entanglement with Terry Knight. Then it was the end of an era, as Farner released his 1st solo LP in 1977 & Brewer, Schacher & Frost, continued on as “Flint” until 1978.

The Zombies: St. Albans: 1962 – 1968

Article #96-Z  Feb- 2019 for Radio WFNU

By: RLSchwinden aka MrZerr0

Funny thing, I can not quite recall when or where I 1st heard ‘The Zombies’ I imagine, it was sometime in 1973 or 74 when I was listening to the Radio quite a bit for the 1st time in my young life. I do vividly remember hearing the song “Time Of The Season” on the CD (sorry fans, Vinyl came to a CLOSE in Dec ’87) Soundtrack from the film”1969″ (Nov 1988) released in 1990. And then later in 2003, as I was trying to introduce The Monkees to an old flame, she fired back “I like The Zombies!” When we opened “Mr. Zero’s 55113” (10 years ago in this very location), we had many customers coming in looking for ‘The Zombies’ records, upon doing the research, I found out they were referencing the “Rolling Stone Top 500” for “Odessey and Oracle” (it’s always interesting to me, critics always pick highly UN-Successful albums to rate as THEE Best Of All Time, only frustrating the masses when they try to find a copy “In The Wild”)  I was shocked to find out they really only had 2, maybe 3 albums in their short career, by in large this band was a 45 Singles band, releasing 19 Singles with several having different “B-Sides” in the UK vs. the USA! Making this over 40 songs on the 45 Singles, and over 13 songs not on any album, which would make an entire album of its own, which they should have as they only had 2 studio LPs. As the band was just inducted into the “Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame” this Jan. with this I will now give you a brief history of The Zombies.

> Sometimes: 1961 – 1963<

The time was 1961 in St. Alban’s Hertfordshire, England, 3 school chums came together to jam one  Vocalist- Keyboardist Rod Argent (Rodney Terrance Argent: 14 June 1945: St. Albans, Eng) & Guitarist Paul Atkinson (19 Mar 1946- 1 Apr 2006) & Drummer Hugh Grundy (6 Mar 1945 Winchester, Eng) with initially Argent’s cousin Jim Rodford on Bass, as Rodford was already in a semi-successful band, he declined, The original Bassist Paul Arnold was the one to come up with the new name “The Zombies to replace the original name they went under “The Mustangs” however Arnold soon left the band afterwards. Argent decided he wanted to form a full time band so in April 1962, he recruited Guitarist- Vocalist Colin Blunstone (Colin Edward Michael Blunestone: 24 Jun 1945 Hertfordshire, Eng.) & Bassist Chris White (7 Mar 1945 Hertfordshire). In the beginning Argent was the Lead Singer, but very quickly it became apparent, that his keyboard abilities far outweighed his vocal abilities, and he turned the Lead singer spot over to Blunestone. It should be noted that Argent & White were the main song writers in the band.

> What More Can I Do: 1964<

In 1964 the band released a 4 song “EP” on Decca Records. Decca was one of the Leading Major Record Labels until the early 70s. Est. in the UK in 1929. In the UK “Extended Plays” were very popular with the buying public, in the USA, not so much. Remarkably the band’s 1st 45 Single was their biggest hit; “She’s Not There b/w You Make Me Feel Good” on Decca Records released in Aug ’64 and went to #2 on the Billboard Charts. In Oct ’64 the band makes their 1st appearance on the TV Show ”Thank Your Luck Stars” and in Dec 1964 the band make their TV appearance on “Top Of The Pops” in Aug 1964, later in Nov ’64 they release “Leave Me Be b/w Woman” on the band’s 1st US Tour the become the  “House Band” at the Fox Theatre in Brooklyn NYC from Dec- 1964 to Jan 1965, on the “Murrey The K” Christmas Show.

> I Must Move; The Year Of The Zombies: 1965<

In doing my research I was astonished to find out that while this band did not release many LPs, however they did release a whole lot of 45 Singles and in fact did make many TV appearances to promote those singles. The band made the 1st of 4 appearances on “Ready Steady Go” starting in Jan. and then Feb, May & Sep of 1965; also in Jan ’65 they appeared on “Hullabaloo”. In Feb they released their 3rd single the #6 hit on Decca Records  “Tell Her No b/w What More Can I Do & Leave Me Be” and make their 2nd appearance on “Thank Your Lucky Stars” in Feb, and 2 more in April, and then Sep ’65. The band release the #58 hit in Apr ’65 “She’s Coming Home b/w I Must Move” also released in Apr was their 1st LP “Begin Here” in the UK & “Self Titled” in the USA on Parrot Records which reaches #39 on the Billboard charts. On the 30th April 1965 Fri in Sioux City, Iowa at the Auditorium, the Zombies performed in concert, I am quite sure one Tommy R. Bolin (1951-1976) was in attendance at this show, as his Father Rich was quite fond of taking his son to Pop Shows. The band make the 1st of 2 appearances on the Dick Clark- Paul Revere & The Raiders Show ”Where The Action Is” in June 1965. Their  4th single “I Want You Back Again b/w Remember When I Loved You” was released in July 1965 and reaches #95 on the charts, followed by in Aug 1965 the single “Whenever You’re Ready b/w I Love You” again on Decca Records. The band appears on the show “Shindig” in Sep ’65 and release their 7th 45 Single “Just Out Of Reach b/w Remember You” this same month. In Oct ’65 the band have 3 songs on the Soundtrack LP “Bunny Lake Is Missing” on RCA Records.  The Zombies make their final TV appearance for the year on “Ollie and Fred’s Five O’Clock Club” in Dec 1965.

> Don’t Go Away: 1966<

Having released their 1st LP in 1965, there will be no new album until 1968, however they do release their 8th 45 Single “Is This The Dream b/w Don’t Go Away” in Feb 1966. The band makes a 2nd appearance on “Where The Action Is” in May 1966. Their 9th single “Indication b/w How We Were Before” is released in June 1966, followed by an appearance on the TV Show “Hippodrome” in July 1966. With their 10th single “Gotta Get A Hold Of Myself b/w Way I Feel Inside” released in Sep ’66, they have now released 21 songs on 45 singles, with only 5 of these songs on the 1st studio LP of 14 songs. Things are winding down for the band in 1966, not having any real hits in ’66 there is no follow up album and they eventually leave Decca Records.

>Friends Of Mine; The End for the Zombies: 1967<

1967 sees the band release their 11th 45 Single and last on Decca “Goin Out Of My Head b/w She Does Everything For Me” in Mar 1967, followed by the 1st single on CBS records the single “Friends Of Mine b/w Beechwood Park” in Oct 1967 followed by their 2nd single on CBS Records “Care of Cell 44 b/w Maybe After He’s Gone” in Nov 1967, the band did find some success in other countries which lead to a foreign tour in ’67. Frustrated with lack of hits and tensions within the band compounded by a management dispute Blunstone, Atkinson & finally White leave the band.

>This Will Be Our Year: 1968<

Though the band has broken up they release their most famous song albeit NOT their biggest hit “Time Of The Season b/w I’ll Call You Mine” in April 1968, which did not fair too well upon its 1st release. Ironically the band’s 2nd album and 1st for their new record label was recorded from June to Nov ’67, but not released until April 1968 ”Odessey and Oracle” on CBS-Date Records and only rises to #95 on the charts. A follow up single  “I Love You b/w The Way I Feel Inside” is released in June 1968, apparently there was going to be a 3rd studio LP for CBS entitled “R.I.P.” without Blunstone,  recorded in late 1968 and scheduled for release in early 1969 but was shelved until 2014. At the urging of Al Kooper “Time Of The Season b/w Friends Of Mine” is released a 2nd time and rises to #3 on the charts in Mar 1969. Due to the success of their new hit   the LP “Early Days” is released in 1969 a compilation LP that has only 2 tracks that were released on any album. In hopes of scoring another hit  “Imagine The Swan b/w Conversation Off Floral Street” is released in May 1969 followed by the band’s final 45 Single “If It Dont Work Out b/w Dont Cry For Me” in July 1969. The LP “World Of The Zombies” a Best Of -Hits LP is released in 1970 to round out the band’s catalog.

After the Zombies broke up 2 members of The Zombies; Rod & Chris White went on to form the band ‘Argent’ from 1969 to 1976 with song writer vocalist Russ Ballard (31 Oct 1945 Hertfordshire, Eng) & bassist Jim Rodford (7 July 1941 St. Albans – 20 Jan 2018) the Cousin to Rod Argent with Drummer Bob Henrit, incidentally, both Rodford & Henrit went onto be in The KINKS until 1996. Argent released 9 Albums 13 Singles. They are most famous for the #5 hit ”Hold Your Head Up b/w Closer To Heaven” from Aug 1972.

I was able to see and meet The Zombies on 7 October 2004 Thurs in Minneapolis at 1st Ave. for the CD “As Far As I Can See” tour. Rod was collecting all the cover versions of their- his songs; like KISS: “God Gave Rock N Roll To You II” 1992 & Trip Shakespeare (from MLPS): “Time Of The Season” 1992. I told Rod about “Hold Your Head Up” by Steppenwolf released in 1982, he said “Thank you, I did not know about that one” This article is dedicated to Suzy-Kat where she may be.
