So in late April 2013, a guy named Greg C. from the KISS Tributes: Vintage KISS & UNMASKED (a former band mate of my former bandmate Eric DeW.) saw an article on my RecordStore “Mr. Zer0’s” in the MPLS “City Pages” and stopped in to sell off his KISS collection including his “Gene Simmons 1977 Love Gun” costume, I joked with him “You’re not doing KISS anymore?” G.C. responded “I can’t find a Paul Stanley” I started to chuckle and he asked “Why, do you know one?” I answered “Um, yea, I am one” he shot back “Must have been a long time ago”. A few days later he called me and asked “Say, I was thinking about putting together a new KISS Tribute but dedicated only to the early days, you know like post “Wicked Lester” and the 1st Album Tour of 1973 -74, up to say “Hotter Than Hell” for all those fans who never got to see KISS start off in those early days” I answered “Oddly enough my last KISS Tribute Band (Black Diamond: DSM) was that very time period 1974, I am in” So Summer 2013 G.C. and I started working out the setlist at some house in MPLS. Just Like Gene & Paul did in ’73.

G.C. “I know these 2 guys I have been jamming with that might be interested; Drummer Madman Meyers & Guitarist Mick Rotella. Well these 2 didn’t pan out but Mick R. did bring us MN. Pete Campbell (of: ACK & PENTAGRAM), so Fall 2013 this really quiet guy shows up at TRAX Studios with his drum set stuffed into a PT Cruiser. The room was all brick, huge, cold and damp. The 3 of us proceeded to crank out Deuce, Strutter, Parasite, Love Her All I Can & Black Diamond. The only thing I remember MN. Pete even saying was (pointing at me) “This guy doesn’t need a P.A. listen to him belt those songs out” When I told my good friend Tommy Sommers (of the internationally famous podcast “3 Sides Of The Coin”) about our new project, he responded “Well, this is good and all, but you’re going to need to do songs like “Keep Me Waiting” “Simple Types” and “Life In the Woods”. I came back with “I’ve never even heard “Life In The Woods” Tommy offered “I can get you a copy”. After about 3 months of this trio working on our set, one day in Jan 2014, this tall quiet guy walks in and sets up his amp where Mick R. used to set up. He proceeded to jam with us and blow me away, turns out this was Paul Helms formerly of “KISS Army” who I had seen on New Year’s Eve 2000 in Fridley. So I asked him if he was willing to join us, he was apprehensive, but reluctantly agreed. At this time Greg insisted on going under the name “ROCK AND ROLL ALL NITE” which was just silly as we Did NOT Play this song live, so I called our band “KISSin Time” (from the 1st Album, which IS what we were doing) Our 1st gig was Feb. 2014 at Lee’s.

So as time went on, Helms left to do his “FOO FIGHTERS Tribute”, Greg left to do His “Hard Rock ELVIS Tribute” MN. Pete left to tour the world with “PENTAGRAM” in late 2014 we picked up Tony Wright to be SpaceAce, he brought with him Joe Marvelous. Joe left to focus on his band “RIVER HIGH” eventually Tony left too. We brought in Hevy Kevy from “A HARD DAYS NIGHT” as Catman, and Xen McGuire from “NEW PRESCRIPTIONS ” to be the Demon, and we got Jason Young from “BETTY AND THE NOISE” to be our SpaceAce. Well, then Kevy left for awhile and Robin Krystal became our Catman off and on. Xenia left to be in “THEE MOD GARAGE” so we brought in Gonzo form “HOLLYWOOD BLVD.” to be our Current Demon. Jason left to do his “70s AM RADIO Project” and we secured Topp Jimmy The Shredder to be our current SpaceAce, and of course Kevy came back for yet another time! We have had many Subs and crew over the past 9 years; I hope I mentioned them all, here.

And so here is our Bio:

Founded in Fall 2013 by Rikka Serr0 who portrays “StarChild” with several fellow KISS fans (MN. Pete of PENTAGRAM, G. Connor: Vintage KISS & P. Helms: KISS Army). Our idea was to recreate the long lost time period of KISS the late 1974 to early 1975, years of KISS, covering most their first 3 albums: “KISS” (Feb 1974), “Hotter Than Hell” (Oct 1974) & “Dressed To Kill” (Mar 1975) which were used to the 6 time Platinum album “KISS: Alive!” (Sep 1975). Because nearly, every real KISS Fan has the “Alive!” album, and we perform all but 1 song off of “Alive!”. As of 2020 KISSin Time has expanded our Setlist to include: “Destroyer” (Mar 1976) “Rock And Roll Over” (Nov 1976) “Love Gun” (Jun 1977) “Alive II” (Nov 1977) to bring us to a 37 song canon, currently.

KISSin Time: uses in their show; a 7 foot, lighted sign, fire truck beacons, a siren, fog machines, 6 Marshall cabinets. Spaceman has a smoking guitar that lights up. The Demon Spits Blood and Breathes Fire. StarChild breaks a guitar nightly at the end of the show, the band throws out swag & confetti during the show. Performing hits such as: Deuce, Firehouse, Cold Gin, Strutter, Let Me Go Rock & Roll, & Rock And Roll All Nite, Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud, Calling Dr. Love, Love Gun Rocket Ride and on a special occasion Beth. As well as plenty of deep cuts for thee Hard Core KISS Fans.

“April Fools” what does it mean to you? I believe here in Minnesota it is a joke on its residents, that someday Winter will end. The custom dates back to 1392, when it was announced March had 32 days in the month. In Ireland, it was traditional to entrust the victim with an “important letter” to be given to a named person. That person would read the letter, then ask the victim to take it to someone else, and so on. The letter when opened contained the words “send the fool further. In Germany, an April Fool prank is sometimes later revealed by shouting “April, April!” at the recipient, who becomes the “April fool”. Norwegians (aprilsnarr in Norwegian) celebrate April Fools’ Day. Most news media outlets will publish exactly one false story on 1 April; for newspapers this will typically be a first-page article but not the top headline. I know I personally have made many foolish decisions, usually pertaining to women or money, well, I personally believe the 2 go hand in hand, actually. So this month I decided to to do a “PsychoGello Radio Show” on “April Fools” however at the end of the month, therefore “April Fools” So here’s a rundown on the songs I played on my “April Fools” show PArt 1, and the one’s I will play on next year’s “April Fools” Show in 2023.

“Why Do Fools Fall In Love”

Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers a #1 Billboard Hit from Jan 1956.

He was born Franklin Joseph Lymon on 30 Sep 1942 in Harlem, NY. and passed on 27 Feb 1958.

I 1st heard this song from a late 50s early 60s boxset, my Dad bought my Mom back in about 1972, I would guess. If you would like some good reading on how “Pure” the music business “Was” look into Frankie’s manager Morris Levy. If you can find Gene Simmons of KISS produced and narrated a documentary in 2001 on Morris Levy “Secret History Of Rock N Roll”

“Fool In Love”

Ike And Tina Turner #2 hit in July 1960

Though formed in St. Louis, MO. in 1960, Ike Turner was born Izear Luster “Ike” Turner Jr. on 5 November 1931 in Clarksdale, MS. and passed 12 December 2007 and Tina was born Anna Mae Bullock on 12 November 1939 in Brownsville, TN. They stayed together until 1976 when Tina went solo. I think I 1st heard of Tina in 1975 in the film “Tommy as the “Acid Queen” PsychoGello Show Episode #181 Feb 2021 is on Tina Turner.

I have written much on The Beatles in the past 11 Years (to this very Month, thanks Izzy & Dan D.) so the thing I will point out on this one is, Our Mascot “MrZerr0” was created by Jose Delbo who in fact worked on The Beatles “Yellow Submarine” and when I was a mere toddler my Aunt Debby K. used to play Beatles 45s on her record player for me to dance to. Another band I have written much about over the past 11 years my favorite story I tell when I perform live in concert “In 1972 when I was a kid growing up on the Westside of Sioux City, my favorite band was Deep Purple and only 3 years later a guy from my neighborhood from 27th and Clark, as i was from 25th and Pierce, ended up in Deep Purple, and I thought about it real hard, and realized that my guitar could get me out of Sioux City, I knew I wouldn’t end up in a band like Deep purple, but I knew I could get out of Sioux City” I actually saw Deep Purple perform “Fools” in concert on

10 June 2001, MPLS. I later saw them many other times: 24 Aug 2004 St. Paul, 1 July 2005 St. Paul, Ian Gillian Solo 21 Sep 2006 Medina 7 Aug 2015 Sioux City, IA. 19 Oct 2019 MPLS. PsychoGello Show Episode #46 from June 2018 is on DP Mk2.

Well, here again. On this I would say that Bassist -Vocalist Gleen Hughes (21 Aug 1951 Staffordshire, Eng.) Is one of my Top 5 favorite vocalists of all time.

“Everybody’s Fool”

The Butts Band: 1975

Formed in the UK in 1975. The Butts Band contains 2 members of the Doors: Robby Krieger and John Densmore. The vocalist on this song is Jess Roden and the bassist was Phil Chen (21 Oct 1946 Kingston, Jamaica – 14 Dec 2021) I was able to get Chen to sign my copy of this Album. I saw Krieger solo in Oct 2002 in Scottsdale, AZ. I saw 21st Century Doors on 23 Apr 2004 MPLS where I met Krieger and Manzarek, I met Chen on13 Mar 2015 in Medina.

“Nobody’s Fool”

Slade: Mar 1976

Formed in Wolverhampton, Eng. in 1966.

Their Vocalist Noddy Holder was born Neville John “Noddy” Holder 15 June 1946. A bit of trivia here: “Noddy” is an Irish slang for “Mouth”. My Anunt Cat was a fan of Slade, however I never really gave them a chance until my old boss Marc H. told me they were his favorite band. And of course 2 of Quiet Riot’s biggest hits were Slade covers so I knew those. PsychoGello Show Episode #116 (Nov 2019) is on Slade.

“Fool To Cry”

Rolling Stones: a #10 hit in April 1976.

Again I have written much about The Rolling Stones, how I got into this band was my Godfather’s (Uncle Jim U.) Vince H. was a huge 45 Single collector, he had hundreds and at least a dozen of The Rolling Stones. I love the Stones so much I own 3 White Teardrop Guitars, similar to the one Brian Jones played. I met Bill Wyman the bass player in this band on 20 Aug 2001 in Apple Valley. This one is dedicated to my Son Oblieon as Jagger sings “Daddy, you’re a fool to cry”. “Fools Gold”

Thin Lizzy: Oct 1976

This band formed in Dublin Ire. in 1969. From my favorite Album “Johnny The Fox” the band played here

1 May 1976 in St. Paul for this album. I saw them (well, 2 of them anyway) on 24 Aug 2004 in St. Paul. Perhaps one of my favorite bands of all time. PsychoGello Shows #15Nov 2017 and #186 Mar 2021 are on Thin Lizzy the latter has my Co-Host “Just Andy ” making an appearance.

“Fools”

Van Halen: Mar 1980

Formed in Pasadena, Ca. in 1972. It was my best friend Greg A. in Jackson (Brandon) MS. who turned me onto this band, however my best story is I was at my friend Chris W. wedding and his Dad’s girlfriend was from Pasadena and she told me how she used to go see Van Halen at her local high school dances. I feel sometimes Van Halen were not very original like Roth copying Jim Dandy from Black Oak Arkansas, and the song “Hot For Teacher” borrowing heavily from Cobham’s “Quadrant 4” and this song borrows heavily from Deep Purple’s “Place In Line”. I saw Van Helen twice in 1992 in Ames and again in St. Paul in 2012. I saw Roth solo twice, as well, in Nov 2004 and again in Feb 2020. PsychoGello Show #115 from Nov 2019 is on Van Halen.

“Fool For Your Love”

Triumph:Sept 1981

Formed in Ontario Can. in 1975. My North Jr. friend David B. introduced me to this band when we were all waiting around for a new RUSH Album summer of 1978. They were close enough for me. I saw them in Phoenix, AZ. on 19 Sep 1981, when I was living there after High School. PsychoGello Show Episode #117 in Nov 2019 is on the band Triumph.

“Ship Of Fools”

The Doors: Feb 1970

Formed in Los Angeles in 1965. Now I had 3 friends really into The Doors, before I was which kind of paved the way ofr me, Eric D. (in 1981) Eric H.(in 1986) and Missy Marrz. Now I was not a Doors fan, for decades, until the Oliver Stone film soundtrack was released in Mar 1991, there was something about the way the track list was put together, I really dug it ! So began my journey into The Doors. I have to say it’s really the musicianship I love about this band, the blend of the guitar, keys and drums. I have a CD and a Vinyl autographed by; Manzerak & Krieger.

“Fool In The Rain”

Led Zeppelin: #21 hit in Dec 1979, like it or not, their 5th Biggest Hit EVER!

Formed in London in 1968 as “The New Yardbirds”. I guess they are the Beethoven of the last 100 years.

My Uncle John & Aunt Cat turned me onto this band I loved them until 9 years later I was still hearing them every day of my life, everywhere I went ….

Here’s my thinking, Robert Plant could solve the world economy, just by doing just 1 Led Zeppelin Tour. The band could do 1 or 2 or 3 nights, per week, in the major cities like New York, LA, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix, Seattle, Vegas, Denver, St. Louis, Nashville. So they were not on the road constantly and still have several days off in between shows and dates. They could charge $1000.oo for the “Cheap Seats” and 10k for front row, people would pay it. Each night could be a totally different 1 hour set. They would generate billions for Everyone: Venues, Concessions, Hotels, Transportation, Parking, Security, Merchandise, Manufacturers, never mind the ticket service fees. So I wonder how Robert feels being the most Powerful man in the whole entire world? Simply because he will NOT Do it ….. (thanks Robert). PsychoGello Show #138 from Apr 2020 is on Led Zeppelin.

“Fool For Your Lovin”

Whitesnake: May 1980 and again in Nov 1989 a #37 hit upon its 2nd release.

Formed in London, Eng. from 3 past members of Deep Purple Mk4: David Coverdale, Jon Lord & Ian Paice, after the death of Tommy R. Bolin, Glenn Hughes went solo with “Play Me Out”. So being a huge Deep Purple naturally I would like this band. I have seen the twice 3 Jul 2009 and 11 Jul 2015 in St. Paul. I was able to say “Hello” to Coverdale.

“Foolin”

Def Leppard: #28 hit in Jan 1983.

I was not a fan of this band until “High N Dry” ( Jul 1981) then I lost any interest after “Hysteria” (Aug 1987) worth noting this title was one of thee very last mass quantity pressed on vinyl, the label put 58min on the LP hoping to compete with CD & Cassette …. IT FAILED, NO ONE was buying Vinyl at that time, NO ONE.

I saw them many times in Iowa in 1992 and 1999, then in MN. 2002, I met them 2005 at this show, 2014 and Phil Collin 2018

Formed in Philadelphia, PN. in 1983 I remember coming up with the idea to call my band “Cinderella” in fall of 1978, absolutely NO ONE liked that idea. I remember when this band came out, I had high hopes, but I was let down to hear they were a lesser AC/DC clone. I did see them live in concert in Aug 2005 in Clear Lake, IA. I was impressed ! I did enjoy them live! I saw their vocalist- guitarist – Sax Player Tom Keifer solo in Sept 2015 in Hinckley, MN.

Formed in 1986 in London.

Formed after Karl Wallinger left The Waterboys. This song totally reminds me of my first few years at RecordShop #67 at Valley West Mall in W. Des Moines, IA.

Robert Plant: a #84 hit in Feb 1988

I saw Plant solo on 17 Nov 1990 in Des Moines, IA. at Vets.

I just recently discovered that Plant released 3 singles before (New Yardbirds) Led Zeppelin, one in 1966 on CBS Records and two in 1967 on Columbia Records. PsychoGello Show #138 from Apr 2020 is on Led Zeppelin, someday I would like to do a Robert Plant Solo Show.

“Foolish Desire”

Daniel Ash: 1992

Born 31 July 1957 in Northampton, ENG. He was with the bands “Bauhaus” “Tones On Tails” and “Love And Rockets” I worked with a guy named Eric at Maryvale Mall in W. Phoenix, that turned me onto Bauhaus, but a lady I knew Susiecat really got me into this kind of music. I saw and met him Mar 2002 at “1st Ave.” in MPLS.

Ronnie Wood: 1993

Born 1 June 1947 in Hillingdon, ENG.

Once a member of “The Faces” and “Jeff Beck Group” and now “The Rolling Stones” he releases solo material periodically, at least 10 solo albums.

“Foolish Games”

Jewel: #2 in Jul 1997 (released in Feb 1995)

Born Jewel Kilcher 23 May 1974 in Homer. Alaska.

I got into Tori Amos about June 1992, I would guess, Jewel’s CD came out in 1995, like the rest of the world it didn’t make much of an impression on me until 1997. Then I fell in love …. with her. I 1st met her in Nov 2001 in MPLS and again in June 2002.

Formed in Little Rock, AR. in 1995.

A newer band I kind of like, there weren’t too many that came out then I really liked, but this is one of them. I saw them in concert on 13 July 2004 in MPLS, I saw Amy Lee with Hinder in Feb 2009 in St. Paul.

As I am 33% Irish (my Great Grandfather Charles came from Cork (so I was told) I had my DNA done in 2019, just to make sure, and is Mr. Zer0’s 13th St. Patrick’s Day here in Roseville 55113, I was thinking how many bands or singers came out of “Conservative” Ireland (it wasn’t until Feb 1985 that contraceptives could be sold in Ireland) It’s like Colm Meaney said in “The Commitments” Aug 1991 “Is this the band then? I bet the U2 are shittin themselves”. So this time I thought I would think back to the Irish bands I knew of, and how I discovered them, and what I knew about them. Shall we begin?

*Them*

Formed in April 1964 Belfast, N. Ireland they released; 7 Albums, 11 Singles. Thier most well known songs: “Baby, Please Don’t Go” “Here Comes the Night” “Mystic Eyes” “Gloria”. The band consisted of; Van Morrison, Alan Henderson, Ronnie Milling, Billy Harrison and Eric Wrixon. An interesting bit of trivia, Alan Henderson died on 9 April 2017 in Big Lake, Minnesota, at the age of 72, I was driving several times a week through that area about that same time. So the first time I heard of ‘Them’ was through Jimi Hendrix on a Promo 7″ Single of “Gloria” where I read the name Van Morrison.

*Van Morrison*

George Ivan Morrison 31 August 1945 born in Belfast N. Ireland (so British really) he went solo from ‘Them’ in 1967,

he ended up releasing some 60 Albums, 77 Singles, with his most famous songs being “Brown Eyed Girl”

“Crazy Love” “Into The Mystic” “Wild Night” “Bright Side Of The Road”. I would have to say I first heard of Van’s solo material, like most music back then in my life, at my Grandma Marge’s living room on her table top radio tuned into KMNS. I do remember liking “Domino” quite a bit.

*Thin Lizzy*

Formed in 1969 in Dublin, Ireland. Releasing 16 Albums, 4 EPs, 32 Singles, their most popular songs being “Boys Are Back in Town” “Whiskey In The Jar” “Cowboy Song”. The band members: Phil Lynott, Brian Downey, Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White, John Sykes and Darren Wharton. Hands down my favorite on this list, however I must add that most of the band members were born in England including Phil, himself. I first heard this band at the roller skating rink in Sioux City, funny thing when I went there, I was mostly paying attention to the music they were playing over the P.A.

*Clannad*

This family band formed in 1970 Donegal, Ireland. They have released some 23 Albums, 30 Singles, with their most well known songs: ‘Harry’s Game” “Of A Lifetime (with Bono)” “I See Red” “Newgrange” Their members: Ciarán Brennan, Moya Brennan, Pól Brennan, Noel Duggan, Pádraig Duggan and Enya (Brennan). I vividly remember discovering this band. I was at my friend Ron’s house and he put on the VHS of “U2: Under A Blood Red Sky” (Aug 1983) and the intro to this concert video was “Harry’s Game” I remember how haunting it was, I just loved it and so I sought out some Clannad releases.

*Enya*

She was born Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin on 17 May 1961 in Donegal, Ireland. She left Clannad and went solo in 1983. Since then she has released 12 Albums, 24 Singles, with her most well known songs being “Orinoco Flow” “Only Time” and “Evening Falls”. It is unfortunate that when a song like “Orinoco Flow” attains such global success as it did it becomes something to joke about very quickly, well like anything that’s “In Style” i suppose.Even so I really loved that song when it came out.

*U2*

Hailing from Dublin formed 1976, this band has released some16 Albums, 4 EPs, 62 Singles. The band consisting of: Bono, Larry Mullen Jr. The Edge and Adam Clayton. Ok, i have to say if you haven’t heard of this band you must have been living on a deserted island with no internet reception what so ever. I remember the first time I heard of this band, I was on tour with ‘High Fever’ summer of 1983 somewhere in South Dakota, as we were setting up our gear, the club we were performing in, as playing MTV on the main screen, the song was “Sunday Bloody Sunday” I remember liking the drum style of Larry Mullen Jr.

*Sinead O’Connor*

Sinéad Marie Bernadette O’Connor born on 8 December 1966 in Dublin, Ireland. She has released 13 Albums, 2 EPs, 32 Singles, her most famous songs being “Nothing Compares 2 U (Prince cover)” “Emperor’s New Clothes” “Heroine (with U2)” “I Believe In You (Bob Dylan cover)” I first heard about Sinead in 1987when a regular customer was looking to collect everything “U2” he had me loo up the Soundtrack for the film “Capture” released in 1986. Later of course I heard the Prince cover when I was working in Phoenix.

*Boomtown Rats*

They were formed inDublin, Ireland in 1975. They released some 8 Albums, 19 Singles, with their best known songs “Lookin After #1” “Rat Trap” “I Don’t Like Mondays” and “Diamond Smiles” The band consisted of: Bob Geldof, Pete Briquette, Simon Crowe, Garry Roberts, Johnnie Fingers and Gerry Cott. I am not sure where I first heard the song “I Don’t Like Mondays” but I do know this is how I first heard of the this band.

*Bob Geldolf*

One Robert Frederick Zenon Geldof was born 5 October 1951 in Dublin, Ireland. He left the ‘Boomtown Rats’ and went solo in 1986 releasing some 7 Albums, 17 Singles, and his most well know songs “The Great Song of Indifference” “This Is the World Calling”. I remember seeing him as “Pink” in Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” film from July 1982, which I was completely Unimpressed with this film as well as the music, and of course Geldof was responsible for “Live Aid” July 1985. I kind of remember my old Boss Matt, liking Geldof’s solo CDs.

*Stiff Little Fingers*

Formed in 1977 in Belfast N. Ireland (so British), this band released some 8 Albums, 3 EPs, 12 Singles, with their best known song “Suspect Device” being used in the film “high Fidelity” from March 2000, I have to be honest, I had never heard of this band before then. The band consisted of: Jake Burns, Henry Cluney, Ali McMordie, Jim Reilly.

*The Pogues*

Formed in London in 1982 – 1996. I have to give this band a honorable mention. As I personally feel they don’t get much more Irish sounding than this band, so I was shocked to find out they are in fact, NOT Irish. How I found out about them, their 1988 promo poster for the CD “Should I Fall From the Grace Of God” was unusual looking I had to give it a listen, I do remember Matt loved this one.

*Loreena McKennitt*

A solo artist from 1985 hailing from Manitoba, Canada. Again I am blown away this is NOT an Irish artist. I just loved her CD “Mask And Mirror” from March 1994, and later “Book Of Secrets” from Sep 1997. I was working at RecordShop #66 at Southridge Mall, and the promo CD of “Mask And Mirror” came in, I put it on and just fell in love.

*B*witched*

from Dublin, Ireland formed in 1997 to 2002

By twin sisters Edele and Keavy Lynch with Lindsay Armaou and Sinéad O’Carroll

They released 3 albums, 8 Singles, with their most popular songs being; “Cest La Vie” “Rollercoaster” “To You I Belong”.

I found out about this group while working at DiscJockey in Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines, I can’t say I was a huge fan, hailing from that ‘Spice Girls’ era but I kept the CD because they are Irish.

*My Bloody Valentine*

From Dublin, Ireland formed in 1983. The band consisted of; Kevin Shields, Colm Ó Cíosóig, Belinda Butcher and Debbie Googe. The released 4 Albums, 5 EPs, 9 Singles, with their most popular songs being; “Soon” “To Here Knows When” “Only Shallow” Now this one is an interesting story as I found out about them when I worked at DiscLand in Bloomington, in 2006, at the time I thought they were a newer band, but in writing this I found out they had been around for awhile

*Cranberries*
Wow, finally a band NOT from Dublin or Belfast, they came from Limerick, Ireland formed in 1989. Releasing 11 Albums, 7 EPs, 23 Singles, and their most popular songs being; “Zombie” “Dreams” “Linger” The band members are:

Mike Hogan, Noel Hogan, Fergal Lawler, Niall Quinn and Dolores O’Riordan. I first heard of this band back when I worked for Wherehouse Ent. in ’93, again I can’t say this music really grabbed me, I do remember thinking when ‘Bad Wolves’ released their version in 2018, “Hey, I know this song”

Twin Cities BUZZ and Roseville Patch Article #132 Feb 2022

I think it’s safe to say most folks know I am a huge Beatles fan, and since it’s the 48th anniversary of The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, I thought I would take the time to explain my many personal experiences and reasons why, I love The Beatles. Let us begin.

*TV on Ed Sullivan*

I am told by either of my parents, they watched The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in Feb 1964, so there’s a chance I saw this as an infant, there is however a photo of me as a toddler watching the Jackie Gleason Show “American Scene Magazine” (1962 -1965)

*Aunt Debby and her Record Player*

So my Aunt Debby used to babysit me and play her 45 Singles collection for me on her record player, her favorites at that time were Dave Clark 5, Beatles and The Cowsills. There is some 8mm video footage of me about 18 months old dancing with my Aunt Debby playing her records for me on her record player. I should mention when my Grandma Irene passed and Debby and I went through her old record collection, she did give me her 33 1/3 Albums, but she wanted to keep her 45 Singles for herself.

*Hard Days Night on TV*

Now this time I can vividly remember being at my Grandma Marge’s on most likely a Saturday night playing in the living room with the TV on watching this ‘black and white’ show where these guys just kept running around with all these other people chasing them around, and playing some songs every now and then. I remember thinking, “Why isn’t this show in color?” Now immediately before or after that on the same channel aired “The Beatles: At Shea Stadium” I remember liking this show much more because first it was mostly music and in color! I know my Godfather Jim still lived at home, and I believe he was a Beatles fan watching the shows at the time, since this was pre-Monkees and back then that’s who my Uncle Johnny liked.

*Palmer’s Basement*

My Grandma Marge’s neighbor’s were the Palmers, Julie and Stacy, we used to hang out in their basement once in a while, on the wall were lots of photos of The Beatles, I remember saying “I like Paul, the one with the big nose” I was corrected “Um, that’s Ringo”. A couple years later I was at a school friend’s house, Dennis and he took me into his brother’s room to show me all The Beatles photos on the wall. When I was attending Old. East Jr. they was a student lounge there, and on the wall was this yellow, red and purple poster of this guy with spiral eyes, this freaked me out! Turns out it was Richard Avedon’s 1967 John Lennon poster.

*Uncle Jeff & Sgt Pepper’s*

In 1970 my Grandparents Schwinden moved to Scottsdale, AZ. and my Uncle Jeff stayed behind and lived with my Dad and Mom. At this time we lived on 36th and Douglas, my parents were still young and they built a little Pub in our basement where they would occasionally hold a party. There wasa corner where my Dad had his Japanese Gold Sparkle Drum Kit and Uncle Jeff had his Egmund Acoustic Guitar, I suppose they used to jam down there, eventually my Uncle Jeff moved to Eugene, OR. and gave me his guitar which was my very first guitar. I vividly remember on New Year’s Eve 1970 my parents were throwing a party to celebrate, they were using my Uncle Jeff’s record collection. I heard magic coming up through the cold air vent that night “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (I have to admit, for many years I thought they were singing “Sgt. Pepperstone, your heart’s so bad”) I loved every single song on that album, still do.

*The Blue Album*

For my birthday in 1973 I saved all my birthday money and had my Dad take me down to Woolco, because I was determined to buy “Sgt. Pepper’s” with my savings. Well we get there and there is the giant display of The Beatles brand new releases “The Red Album: 1962 -66” and “The Blue Album: 1967 -70” both at $7.98 each, well I am pretty sure I had about $10.oo total. I walked over to get “Sgt. Pepper’s” at $5.98 list price. Then my Dad said “Look this one is brand new and is a double album, which is twice the songs, and this “Blue One” has the song you are looking for” so i got the “Blue Album” which strangely about a year later my Uncle John gave the “Blue Album” on 8-Track, even though I did not have an 8-Track player, I just thought about how my Dad only had three 8-Tracks for his VW Beetle, so I was planning ahead for our next car.

*Then Lennon Was Shot*

It’s safe to say I was a Beatles fan since very early on. But when I was in high school (S.C.West) Lennon was shot and killed in Dec 1980. I remember I was upstairs and had just finished taking my bath, I was walking down the stairs when I heard “This just in, special report, Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed tonight in New York City just outside of his home” I was devastated. However, I saw many people at school, who only months earlier LOVED Disco, all of the sudden say they were long time Beatles fans … BS. They hopped on the wagon folks.

“Magic Acid Band”

In 1980 I met Mikey Langley in the lunchroom at West High, someone mentioned he played guitar, and mentioned to Mike I played a little guitar (not much really, my usual joke was when asked “Oh, you play a little guitar?” me “No, I play a great big one”) well I already knew a Drummer Jeff, and a little while later I had art class with a Bass player named Brett, so we put together a band (mostly them) where we did a whole lot of Beatles songs, I was really into the Rolling Stones then, Jeff loved The Who and Brett was in to Cheap Trick. Mikey had been playing in Nashville since he was 10 so he went onto great things.

*Beatles Tribute Bands*

In the Summer of 1989 my then girlfriend Lori loved going to the Iowa State Fair, myself I had never been, thinking it was just a bunch of farmers etc. One night she came to my apt. and said “Well you should have been there last night” I asked “Why’s that” she responded “Do you know who was there last night? The Beatles! and for FREE!” So intrigued, I went the next night (I must add I was not there for more than 15 min. before some drunk spilled his beer all over me on the way to the stage) well, sure enough there was a Beatles Tribute Band there in a couple different costumes. They weren’t too bad, I do remember thinking, “I could do this”. A few years later myself and my close friends at the time went to see another Beatles Tribute, “The Fab Four” I believe it was, while they were great they really only covered the early period of the Beatles, which I prefer the “Mid” period of The Beatles, Myself. Then in 2009 I went to the “Half Time Rec” in St Paul (I later played there with “MrZERo” in Nov 2014) to see The Beatles Tribute “Rubber Soul” and their opening band “Revolver & The Secret Agents” honestly I was blown away by “Revolver”.

*The Art For Mr. Zer0’s*

In mid 2009 I pulled together a group of friends and we formed Mr. Zer0’s on 14 April 2009, and opened in Roseville 55113 a few months later. When I decided on the name, which I took for The Monkees TV Show Episode #52 “Devil and Peter Tork” where Monte Landis played Mr. Zero aka The Devil (because at the time I felt I was selling my soul the the devil in opening my own record shop) I thought Mr. Zero should look very much like “The Joker” without actually being the Joker, (DC copyright). My friend-business partner Aaron introduced me to Angel Medina the art on “KISS PSycho Circus” comics who then introduced me to Jose Delbo (9 December 1933 Argentina) a DC comic artist who’s 1st job was to work on “The Monkees” Comics and then Beatles: Yellowsubmarie. Upon meeting him I asked him if he would create a character “MrZerr0” based on the Beatles Yellow Submarie art, he responded “No, I don’t do that” I thought fair enough, but while I was waiting around for Angel to finish up my KISS sketch, I overheard Jose bickering in Italian with his daughter about what was available for lunch. Having been very familiar with Italian, it was a reflex to spout out “Mangia Mo” (Eat Now!) . Jose turned to me and asked “Where are you from?” I responded “From Argentina” he then said “No, you’re not” I said “Yea, why’s that” he stated “Because that’s where I am from, so why do you speak Italian slang like this?” I informed him I was with a lady (Grace) born in Naples for over 2 years, he added “That’s always the case, so what was it you wanted?” I told him again a character in the style of Beatles Yellow Submarine. He said it will be $XXX.oo and I thought “Oh man, that’s all I have on me, wait this is a one time opportunity” So I said “Go ahead, do it” he asked “What if you don’t like it?” I said “Coming from you I will Love IT!” and in about 15 min “MrZerr0” was born, one of my crowning achievements.

*A Hard Day’s Night*

In about 2014 I met Paul L.a friend of the then bass player in “KISSin Time” he wandered into Mr. Zer0’s and asked if we knew each other from decades ago in S. MPLS. I told him “NO, I am from Sioux City, home of Tommy Bolin” we hit it off and became good friends. Paul figure out I was a huge Beatles Fan, and told me his friend Hevy Kevy (the Drummer For KISSin Time since 2017) was in a Beatles Tribute called “A Hard Day’s Night” and I should go check the out at “The Park” this was about 2016, I’d say, I loved these guys and began to follow them, and became friends with their band leader Joe Covert. Well in Jan 2022, my dream came true I got to sit in with them in practice at the “School of Rock” in St. Paul. I got to play “Come Together” and “Money” with them. A dream came true for me.

“10,000 Hours, Makes You An Expert”

So it’s the year 2022. I was thinking back to how my career in the music biz all started. So let’s start at the very beginning. I was born on the Westside of Sioux City, when I was a toddler, just learning how to stand up, my Aunt Debby used to play Dave Clark 5 and Beatles 45 singles on her record player for me to dance to. There is some 8mm footage of this very event. A very short time later I discovered The Monkees on TV, I typically watched this show for the music, (my Mom documented this in my “Baby Book”) I didn’t much care for the slapstick comedy. So to recap, the first 3 bands I was into were Dave Clark 5, The Beatles and The Monkees. A few years after that my (Step) Dad Bill had a 1968 white VW Beetle with red interior and a 8-Track Player, however he only had 3 different 8-Tracks; Steppenwolf “7” Savoy Brown “Lookin In” and the factory 8-Track that came with the stereo. Oddly enough both tapes had skulls on the cover. I Loved the Steppenwolf tape, I still do. Now my Mom’s brother and sisters were very close to, in the same age as myself, I used to hang out in their bedrooms listening to their record collection, this is where I found bands like the; The Partridge Family, The Osmonds and Black Sabbath and much later, Rush, Foghat, Slade etc. My Uncle Jeff S. gave me my 1st guitar when I was 8, it was an Egmund Acoustic, in the corner of our basement my Dad had a music area, his Japanese Gold Sparkle drum kit, as he used to play the Twin Cities music scene in 1961- 62, along side of The Trashmen.

Then we moved to Jackson (Brandon) Mississippi where there were really only 2 rock/pop stations. It was 1976 when my neighbor Jimmy S. played KISS’ “Destroyer” album for me (through the window of his bedroom) I was blown away by Gene Simmons voice on “Sweet Pain”. It was in 1977, I started buying other peoples records, they no longer wanted and trying to resell them. While I heard some songs on the radio I liked from other bands, there weren’t too many bands that really grabbed me like KISS did. Until we moved back to Iowa, then I really got into Rush, Journey and Van Halen. Then I met my lifelong friend Westside Mikey, who has been a Pro-Musician since he was 10 years old in Nashville. I helped him put together a band just out of H.S. with Jeff P. and Brett R. (eventually I was kicked out because I wasn’t any good) we played mostly Beatles and Rolling Stones and Steppenwolf and Mikey wrote his own songs too. Then I met my neighbor Eric D. he had a band “Palace Guard” he let me join that in about 1982 (until I was kicked out for usually missing practice) until Eric helped me get a job with a local Sioux City concert promoter mid 1982 I worked for him about 1 year, until I hit the road with “High Fever” I toured the midwest with them, until the excesses of the road life took its toll on me and I quit. I lived in MN. for a short time in 1983, then I moved to Des Moines in 1984, to join Brett’s band but he moved as I got there. In 1985 I played in a Local original band “Scepter” for about a year, then I put together a KISS Tribute band “Black Diamond” which limped along for about 2 years until 1988. So I had to get a “Real” job. I worked at a Stereo and Camera store for a few years; in fact in Sept. ’85 I had to take a Class on the New “Compact Disc” that would be replacing Vinyl Records, that year. And then I got my dream job “RecordShop” out of Golden Valley, MN.

It was Summer of 1986, Marc H. hired me, at Valley West Mall in W. Des Moines, IA. and it happened to be at the height of The Monkees 20th Anniversary Reunion, what a great time for me, working in the Record Biz during the 2nd coming of The Monkees. Now a little information for you “Music Collectors” out there, the 8-Track came to an end in the Spring of 1983, so about Summer 1984 Cassettes took over for the buying public to about Summer 1991, and in September 1987, in the USA, NARM and the 6 major labels unanimously agreed to stop carrying Vinyl “In-Stores” in January 1988, and a to a complete end of Vinyl Records in October 1989. (other countries still produced some very small quantities). The Summer of 1991 Sony Electronics dropped the price on CD Players immensely to drive the public to switch from Cassettes to CDs, as Vinyl virtually ended several years earlier. I was with RecordShop from 1986 to 1993 when they were purchased by WhereHouse Ent. I also worked for Archives, in a Very Limited capacity from 1987 to 1994, when they were also purchased by WhereHouse Ent. Unfortunately, they went bankrupt and were eventually purchased by Trans World Ent. like everyone else was. I went to Best Buy from 1995 to 1998, after being grossly under-appreciated I moved on to (Wax Works) DiscJockey in 1998 until 2000, when they were also purchased by Trans World Ent. I lasted with them until 2005 when I was pushed out due to seniority and a few other reasons, I am told. Overall I have work in Iowa, Minnesota, Arizona, Missouri, California, Kentucky and New York. In 2005 I left the corporate world to go Inde with DiscLand out of Bloomington, there I learned a whole lot about the other side of the “Used Business” from there I was told “To move on and open your own store” so … in 2009 myself and about 12 other partners opened Mr. Zer0’s Inc. which is where I am sitting right now!

I read somewhere that 10,000 hours of doing any job makes you an expert, well, I have roughly put in 72,000 hours in the “Music Biz” as Full Time Employment, so I should be an expert 7 times over. Here’s a breakdown.

The other side of the biz

In 2009 I was asked to sit in with my long time friend Chirs’ band “7 Hells” in Iowa, so I did a couple times, sometime in 2010 the band “Jesus Chrysler” asked me to jam with them. I started to get “the bug”. In 2010 I met Mitch, Dave and Zach, so we put together a “Deep Covers” band “MrZERo” (it was Dave that thought we should go by this), we lasted from 2012 to 2015, when Dave left to join another band. Mitch and I formed “NeVeR sAy Die” a Black Sabbath Tribute, and Zach and I kept “MrZERo’ going a while longer. Then in April 2013 I met Greg C. who convinced me to form a KISS Tribute Band, which “KISSin Time” is still going today (our 1st gig of this year is 12 March in North Branch an Tailgators). Sometime in 2015 I started a Paul Stanley: KISS Solo Tribute Band “StarChild” which is also still going on (our next gig is 20 Feb in N. St. Paul at the VFW) as StarChild I have sat in on many occasions with the bands: ACK (Ace Frehley Tribute), Girls, Girls, Girls (Motley Crue Tribute), RoughHouse, Hollywood Blvd. Rock Godz & Mad Mike’s Funhouse, performing anywhere from 1 song to 30 min. during their sets.

In April 2010, I was asked by the “St. Cloud BUZZ” to write a monthly music column for their local publication which I did until about 2016. In June 2013 I was asked to write a monthly music column for Roseville Patch.Com. And then in September of 2021 I was asked to write a weekly column for Twin Cities Buzz.com.

In August 2012 I was asked by a customer DJ Liberty to guest on her KFAI radio show “The Pop Shop” with DJ Izzy I made 7 guest appearances from 2012 to 2017. This led to my own radio show on WDGY starting in April 2017 I have just completed Episode #216. In October 2018 I was asked to guest on the Local Morning Show on the Local Station WFNU, 1 morning and sometimes 2 mornings a week. Then in January 2019 I was asked to guest host on the “Hits And History Show” once a month also on WFNU for 17 months, where I played lesser known “BillBoard Hits” from the Top 100. Which eventually led to me creating “MrZeros: Evolation Show” for 32 programs where I took 1 band and played songs by the band, solo songs by the members and cover songs of the band too, until it was canceled in 2021.So In January 2021 I created the “Cover Up Show”, which is about 10 different artists performing songs by a specific artist, in hopes to get it aired on the Local Station WVIC, so far it is only on our website www.MrZeroS.Com.

As I have mentioned many times before when I was a kid in Sioux City, Christmas was my favorite time of year, I loved it all the music, the movies and TV Shows, the cookies and the candies, especially the lights and even the snow, I would race home from school, (mostly because I hated school) I would grab my Mom’s Sears catalog and sit in our rust colored rocking chair with the TV to catch a Christmas special or the radio on to hear a Christmas song or 2, I would poor through the catalog trying to figure out what I wanted most for Christmas.

However generally speaking, I never got anything I ever wanted from the Sears catalog, however I did usually get the item I saw on TV, that I wanted or from Woolco, located down at the Sunset Plaza. In 1985 while working at a stereo store I worked with a guy Kevin whose brother Keith gave him a tape of Rock N Roll Christmas music, now I thought this was just fantastic, even better was the fact it had a Monkees Christmas song from 1976, that I had never heard before. I was so impressed by this cassette, it was then that I began to make my own annual Rock & Pop Xmass Tape. So it was only natural when I got my own radio show in 2017, I began to do an annual “Christmas Show” every year around Christmas, (I even have the show ready for Christmas 2022, done already).

So with that being said I will give you the track list for the 5th annual “PsychoGello Christmas Show 2021”

and a bit o history to go along with each song.

While I am not a real fan of the Bee Gees, they did put out a cool single back in 1968.

Born 9 March 1942 in Eugene, Ore.

He was with the band “Paul Revere And The Raiders” from 1961 to 1975.

It’s no secret I am a huge “Raiders” fan, (we just lost Keith Alison) this is from Mark’s solo career.

Gary Puckett 1971

Born 17 October 1942 in Hibbing, MN.

He went to school with Robert Zimmerman. Gary was with “The Union Gap” rom 1967 to 1970

Gary was an acquaintance of mine in the 90s- 2000s.

John Denver 1975

Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. on 31 December 1943 in Rosewell, New Mexico, he passed on 12 October 1977.

Again not really being a big fan, I love the message of this song, being Pro AA and all.

Born Marc Feld on 30 September 1947 in London, Eng. he passed on 16 September 1977.

His band “T-Rex” was together from 1967 to 1977.

Although being a huge T-Rex fan, I just stumbled on this jem earlier in the year.

Scott Gorham born William Scott Gorham on 17 March 1951 in Glendale, CA.

Steve Jones born on 3 Sep 1955 in London, Eng.

Paul Cook born on 20 July 1956 in London, Eng. both were in the “Sex Pistols” from 1975 to 1978.

Much like the above, I am one of the biggest Thin Lizzy fans, and only discovered this eqrlier this year.

He was a member of The Monkees from 1965 to 1970.

My friend Mary Lee gave me this one for Christmas back when it was new in ’93.

Now I knew they did this one from time to time, but I only got this recording this year.

There they go….

On Sun 7 Nov 2021, The Monkees, now reduced to Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz, performed what should be their last concert here in Minnesota. DJ Nikola and I attended. While I have been a fan since 1966, according to my mom and my father, and have attended probably over 50 Monkees related events. DJ Nikola being form E. Germany, um, not so much, turns out she knew 2 songs “I’m A Believer” and “Daydream Believer” and liked a 3rd “Steppinstone” but being a truly a good sport she tagged along, out of support and curiosity. Nikola asked me “If 2 members are no longer living, what is it they do?” I explained to her, well there were 4 members from 1965 to 1969 when Bassist Peter Tork left, in 1968, then in 1969 Guitarist Michael Nesmith left. Then David Jones and Micky Dolenz continued until 1971. When Jones went solo. Since 1975 there have been various incarnations of 2, 3 even 4 members of “The Monkees” back in 1989 I had an idea to write a book covering every known tour date I could find, seems last year Andrew Sandoval beat me to the punch by updating his book “The Monkees: Day By Day” (of which I have a few uncreated entries). Later in this article I have listed most of the Minnesota dates, so you the fan reading this could remember and mark down which shows you attended.

On with the show; this time round, as Nesmith was ill sometime last year, the pair Nesmith and Dolenz took to the “Dolenz & Jones” formula of just standing up front singing and not playing instruments, save Dolenz on timpani drum for his own composition “Randy Scouse Git”. The duo sang 15 Nesmith written tunes. While the guys are in their late 70s, you have to give them credit for even going out on tour at their age. Were they great, probably not, but to me a long time fan it was great to see them one last time and playing 2 of my all time favorite songs: “Love Is Only Sleeping” and “While I Cry” and Nesmith’s touching story behind the latter. And I was able to see so many of my friends I have known over the past 33 years, from meeting them at concerts, conventions and the various Recordstores I have worked at since 1986. The backing band had Micky’s sister Coco, (who has been involved on and off since 1967), Nesmith’s son Christian and longtime Monkees backing band guitarist since 1992, Wayne Avers on board. My friend Renee pointed out the many “New” interpretations of the old songs, I chalked that up to playing some of them for 55 years, I was ok with it. All in all I enjoyed it, and so did Nikola, who doesn’t even really care for that music.

And now the near misses of MrZerr0 and Michael Nesmith. You see, in 1990 I was able to get David Jones to sign my 1966 Vox “Lynx” guitar, in 1992 I got Micky Dolenz to sign it, and then in 1996 Peter Tork, and remarkably in 1990 I even got Tommy Boyce And Bobby Hart to sign it. In all these years I have missed Nesmith several times. In 1992 Nez played Chicago, I was talking to an acquaintance, Karen, when she went to the back, I went to the front, she met Nez and I didn’t. In 1994 I was working with Nez’s assistant Jim C. at RIO Records on a Michael Nesmith Boxset of his “Pacific Arts” releases 1974 to 1989, I sent in a poster for the proposed booklet, when in 1995 the PBS lawsuit with Nesmith shut down his record label label until it reopened in 1998, therefore the Boxset was canceled. For my payment of the, then ultra rare poster I still own, I asked for my name in the credits and for Nez to sign my guitar …didn’t happen. In MPLS 2012, after The Monkees concert I was talking to fellow DJ Liberty, when the ushers shooed me out, Liberty had to use the restroom, I had to leave, when she came out, there was Nez, she got a photo and an autograph, I got none. In April 2013 Nesmith was performing a solo show in St. Paul, I had the front and center seat, I even talked to his Bass Player Joe Chemay and Drummer Paul Leim, and explained how I wanted to get my guitar signed “Sorry, man, we can’t help you out”. Then in Apple Valley in 2014, I met and was talking to his daughter Jessica, her first words to me “Sorry, no, I can not get you an autograph” I responded “That’s ok, I understand but can you give your Dad this shirt of my Recordstore here in St. Paul?” she answered “Now, that I can do” Which brings us to present day; I messaged Nesmith’s son asking for assistance to get my guitar signed, then Sunday night my long time friend Perry took my guitar down several hours early in hopes to get it signed, I was at my son Oblieon’s 2nd birthday party, so Nikola and I went down later. While we were waiting before the show she asked me. “How is this done? What do we do? I have never done this before?” While we waited the band walked by us, the tour manager Andrew S. walked by and I even gave him a pick. About 6:30pm Dolenz drove by us. Nothing.

Later during the concert Nikola said “Let me have the guitar I am going to try to get this signed” She walked around the venue and talked to no less than 4 different people to try and get it signed, which they told her they would do what they could to help. Unfortunately, ultimately it did not happen. The explanation. COVID19. But she made the most effort I have ever seen. After the show she asked John, their Bass Player if he could help. While this was happening Nesmith got off his bus and was only a few feet away from me. But could not sign for fear of C19. So Nikola was present to witness I nearly got it signed. And stuck out the whole night for a band she didn’t even know…. now that’s a Quality Woman. Ending with my total defeat. And Now I give you the setlist.

When I was a kid growing up in Sioux City, IA. & Jackson, MS. my favorite time of year was Christmas, followed by Halloween, 2 of my biggest scores of the year. I loved dressing up, because it was the one day a year you could be anything you wanted to be, I had a real affection for skeletons, I am sure I went as one for more than 2 years in a row. A few costumes I do remember doing from either photographs or memory: “Batman” a Pirate, “Bonz Apart” from Groovy Goolies”, a Gorilla Soldier from “Planet Of The Apes” and a “Green Ghost”. I do remember at my grandma Marge’s house, she had the masks of her children from previous decades of Halloween’s hung up in the entryway of the house this was so cool. I later tried collecting old Halloween masks. It was just too costly. This year Tiny Oblieon is going as Batman. As this is year 4 for the “PsychoGello Show” I have been running holiday special shows, so after all this time I created the “PsychoGello Halloween Show”

I used to watch this show late at night in the early 70s in Sioux City. I remember when Rod died I was living in Jackson, I thought he was so young for that time.

I once gave Bruce Kulick of KISS, a birthday card with “Uncle Fester” on the front, I drew a mustache on it, and on the inside I wrote “Isn’t this your Brother Bob?”

When I was a kid I wanted live in a house the the Munster’s house on 1313 Mockingbird Lane, this is what I tried to talk to him about that Sat. nite, he was not too interested in discussing those days. I heard he got into a bit of trouble that weekend. Remarkably I rented the exact same Apt. he lived in here in St. Paul only a few years earlier.

But I loved it, another Rod Serling creation.

When I was a kid growing up in Sioux City, I found I was always about 5 years behind when it came to listening to music, I always preferred late 60s music in the early 70s, and especially in my High School years, I hated Disco and most music from the late 70s, none of my friends could ever understand this, but at the same time I could never understand how they liked the current music. I’m pretty sure I first heard about Joan Baez with her hit “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” on the radio at my Grandma Marge’s, my Grandma was always listening to the radio while she cooked and baked, I would sit in the living room, in my Grandma’s recliner and listen to the radio and enjoy the smells coming from the kitchen. I also loved watching TV, however back then we only had 1 TV with only 4 channels, so pretty much I watched what my Mom wanted to watch.

I remember as a kid in Sioux City in 1972 or so seeing a TV Special on the film “Silent Running with Bruce Dern, one of my favorite actors, and it was Joan singing the theme song “Rejoice In The Sun” I remember thinking how beautiful and powerful her voice was, to this day it is one of my very favorite songs. In 1979 I saw a TV Show on “The Celebration Of The 60s” and I heard a couple of The Byrds songs in this show, so I went right down to Woolco at the Sunset Plaza and bought the 1st 2 Byrds Albums for about $1.99 I think it was.

While studing the history of The Byrds, I learned that they covered a lot of the same songs the Baez, did and Judy Collins too for that matter. Songs of Joan’s that ‘The Byrds’ covered “John Riley” “Old Blue” “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue” “I Know You Rider” “Wild Mountain Thyme” “Hickory Wind” “Pretty Boy Floyd”

When I was with ‘High Fever’ in 1983 touring the midwest the Lead Guitar player Kurt V. used to sing “Diamonds And Rust” I thought it was an unusual song, he told me it’s a Joan Baez song about her relationship with Bob Dylan

In July ’87 she released her CD “Recently” I thought it was really cool she did a cover of U2’s “MLK” in 2000 in St. Paul when I was able to ask her about it she had this to say “Well, I am getting too old to write new songs, I find I don’t have much inspiration to do so anymore, so I let the younger folks write the songs, and I just sing them, when I find a good one” It was about this time, I started listening to Joan Baez (and Judy Collins) I found I really liked Joan’s voice and some of her songs.

About early 2000, I was visiting my friend Jack L. a professional Folk Singer – Songwriter out of Sioux City and he was showing me his Joan Baez 1998 Martin 0-45JB guitar (only 59 ever made) while very rare and expensive, I was not taken by this guitar, I felt it was too small for my liking, however this day Jack showed me how to play the song “John Riley”, and English folk ballad based on Homer’s Odyssey, published in English in 1614 . When I saw Joan live for the first time she told a story about this very guitar. JB: “So Martin Guitars called me up and wanted to do a commemorative issue of my prized 1929 Martin 45, I was flattered, and they asked if I would be willing to send my guitar to Martin so they could get exact measurements from my guitar (as they were all handmade back then so some slight differences always existed) I agreed. So after a few days I got a call from the head of Martin Guitars, he said he had something he wanted to share with me. I asked what it was, he asked “Have you ever had any repair work done to your guitar?” I responded “Why yes, I did, sometime in about 1969 it got damaged on the road so I had a local guy do the repair, why do you ask?” he answered “Well, when my techs were going over the guitar making the specifications for the blueprints, we found something curious on the inside of the guitar” JB: “Oh, what did you find?” MG: “A piece of paper stuck on the inside of the guitar that reads “Too Bad You’re A Communist” placed so that you can read if you put a mirror inside the body” JB: “I guess that guy didn’t like my political viewpoints.” So in keeping with the true reproduction of that guitar there is a piece of paper that has the same words”

The 1st time I saw Joan in concert was on 27 Oct 2000 in Minneapolis at O’Shaughnessy. As usual I took my 1 Vinyl and 1 CD, never wanting to be too greedy (graphers). I walked into the auditorium and went over to the merchandise table where her Road Manager Jim was standing, I asked “Does she ever come out and sign?” Jim responded “Good, God, no, she would be mobbed, why what do you have there, an album?” (younger people need to be reminded, NO ONE collected Vinyl again until 2010) I showed him, I brought Joan’s 1st album on Vanguard. He said “Wow, that’s an original” I replied “Yes, I got this album because it contains the song “John Riley” which I named my bird after this song, does she ever do this song in her set?” Jim responded “Funny you should ask she did that one about a year ago for some fan, so tell you what, go through that door, go down the hall, and out the back, there is the bus, she will be in there” I replied “I know exactly where that is” and off I went, as I walked through the door I could see Joan standing in the front of the bus looking over the parking lot, I motioned to her “Will you sign?” she waved “Hi” and disappeared. I thought “What the heck?” Then she reappeared, she went to put on her coat. She opened the bus door and said “Hi, what can I do for you?” I said “Well, I have a couple things to get signed, if you would” Joan answered “Sure” and signed my Vinyl and CD. I then said to her, “I’d like to tell you a story, you see I named my bird after the song “John Riley” on this album, I was talking to Jim a minute ago and he told me you played this song about a year ago, so at the risk of making it sound like you’re a lounge act, any chance you could play this one tonight?” Joan smiled and said “Wow, that’s an old one, well, it was nice to meet you” So I went inside to the concert.

On this specific tour Joan performed 2 sets, the 1st set being 45 min. and the 2nd set about 65 min. (I have a recording of this specific show). Joan performed the 1st set and took a 20 min break. When she came back out, she started off with “I met a young man in the hallway earlier that reminded me, that before I was a “Protest Singer” I was a “Folk Singer” and he asked me about this next song, I sure hope he is out there tonight, because this one is for him, this is “John Riley” and she performed the song. For Me. She followed it up with “So it wasn’t perfect, but I haven’t played that song in a very long time” So as I was walking out of O’Shaughnessy I walked past the merch table to thank Jim. And he shouted excitedly “Were you there? Did you hear it? She sang that just for you!” I responded “I sure did” True Story.

And the 2nd time I saw Joan in concert was in March 2003 again at O’Shaughnessy this time with Roger McGuinn of The Byrds as an opening act. As I am walking down the hallway to the door into the auditorium, I hear “St. Paul, St. Paul!” I looked around and it was Joan’s Manager Jim, calling to me. I responded, “Yes, I am from St. Paul” Jim says “No to us you are St.Paul, that’s what we call you anyway, sorry we didn’t remember your name, you see the last time we were here Joan played that song for you and that was the last time she ever did that for anyone, you are a legend in the Joan community, we talk about you all the time, I hope you know how lucky you are, that she did that for you” I responded “Yea, I think I do” here’s the setlist for this show.

She was born Joan Chandos Baez on 9 January 1941 in Staten Island, New York,

In the 50s she released 1 album. In the 60s she released 14 Albums. In the 70s she released 17 Albums. And some 27 CDs after that. Joan has released some 35 Singles from 1961 to 1997. The 1^st time Joan play the Twin Cities was on 1 May 1964 Northrop Aud. MPLS.

One thing I hate about “Actual Music History” vs. “Remembered Music History” is, the songs that were actually hits at the time, vs. the trend of what people like today, and choose to remember. So with that, here are Joan’s Actual “Hits”

Continuing in the Series “Mr. Zer0’s Favorites” this time around we are going to discuss Mr. Zer0’s Favorite Toys. Especially since Action Figures and Toys are 25% of Mr. Zer0’s Total Business. You see for the past 12 years Mr. Zer0’s has had a constant problem of trying to drive the message home of What We Do: 25% Music: Records & CDs & Cassettes, 25% Retro Toys & Action Figures, 25% Vintage Video Games: Nintendo & Sega & Playstation, and 25% Movies: VHS & DVD , vs. what people think we do and we simply do not carry: EX. Any Type of: Sports, Cigarette, Alcohol, Drug Paraphernalia, Porno, or a Pawn Shop or anything along those lines. Never have and never will. There are plenty of Other Stores Who Do sell that “Stuff”. For a prime example, Today’s Customer Request: “Do you buy Used Gift Cards?” (really, who would?) or even last week’s example “Would you go buy a Cell Phone Card for me and I can pay you later?” (sorry, no, that’s NOT: Music, Games, Toys or Movies), I digress ….

So as I covered last month as a kid I moved 19 times in just 17 years, and my 3 sisters & brother are considerably younger than me, and my Uncle John and Aunts Cat & Laur were not always around. I spent a lot of time alone in my room entertaining myself. One great thing was I had a vivid imagination. And I loved toys and music, NOT Comics or Sports. Back in the “Olden Days” where I lived we only had 1 TV and 4 Channels on TV; NBC, CBS, ABC & PBS, not even a local station like Des Moines or the Twin Cities, just 4 channels, and No remotes, I was my Mom’s remote, (“Go change it to 14”) and VHS had not been invented yet, so you could not watch a film any time you wanted.

Now I was in a unique situation, my oldest sister is 6 years younger than me, but my Uncle John is 5 1/2 years older than me, and my Aunt Cat is 1 1/2 older and Laur is 5 weeks younger !!!!! I was very close to them growing up. For some odd reason I was really attracted to my Uncle John’s toys, which by the time I discovered them, they were long out of production, for example the “1964 Mattel Zero M Sonic Blaster” “1965 Mattel Creeple Peeple” “1966 Mattel Monkees Talking Hand Puppet” and “1968 Mattel Strange Change Machine”. It just seemed to me all the really cool and interesting toys were my Uncle’s as you could no longer buy them in the stores; this made me want them that much more. So as of today the toys I mostly collect are from 1964 to 1972, if you’re wondering. Now while I have always been a huge fan of The Monkees “Music” I was not a big fan of the toys, I only started collecting the toys in about 1990 and only stepped it up in 2017.

So the 1st toys I can remember being into, was anything “Batman” like the “1966 Ideal Batman Cowl and Cape” which I received for Xmas ’66, I have photos of me wearing it. And the “1966 Ideal Official Batman 3 Figure Set” which my Aunt Laur and I threw “The Joker” down the heat vent in my grandma’s house, when my Grandparents moved from 1706 Villa in Sioux City, I so wanted to take the ductwork apart to see if I could find that figure, I didn’t. The next big thing for me was the early 60s “1963 Hasbro G.I. Joe” I just loved the weapons and accessories, like the diving helmet, the scuba tanks, the radio, the bayonet, the life raft etc. Here’s a story for you, Uncle Scott’s Mom Ruth, used to work for the Hasbro manufacturing plant in Rhode Island, “I asked how cool, what did you do?” she responded “Putting together Mr. Potato Head bodies” I said “Really, how was that?” she answered “Boring, one day my boss asked me to step up my production, I asked are you gonna pay me more? He said “No” so I said “Then you get what you get” I (Ruth) did used to get to buy Scott (my uncle) G.I. Joe accessories at cost, he has quite the vintage collection, somewhere”

My Mom told me she bought me a Beatles “Yellow Submarine” around 1968, but I don’t remember much about that. Here again while I loved The Beatles music I didn’t much care for the toys, I didn’t start collecting Beatles toys until 1989 or so. I do remember my Dad buying me a gold “1968 Hot Wheels Red Line Barracuda” I did find a replacement for this in Phoenix in 1997.

Now hanging out with a lot of people 2 to 6 years older than me, I used to see a lot of WWII plastic toy soldiers at other people’s houses, again these were long out of production where I lived, and there were no vintage shops yet. Louis Marx Toy Company began issuing in 1958 through their heyday in 1963. Some of the pieces of sets I saw were;

“1959 Fort Apache” My Cousin Mike had most of it.

“1962 Flintstones” My Uncle John had most of this one.

“1964 Revolutionary War” My neighbor Eugene had a few pieces.

Starting on Xmas 1968 I started getting my own New Sets. The 1st one I got was

“1968 Cape Kennedy” in a metal case.

In 1972 Marx sold to the Quaker Oats Company, they started re-issuing the sets to Sears and Woolco. I vividly remember my birthday in 1972, my Mom & Dad took me to Woolco at the Sunset Plaza with $5.oo to spend to get a toy. I knew what I wanted. “1972 Battleground” WWII playset, and Nothing else, however it was $7.99 + 2% Sales Tax. Well, like I said I only had $5.oo. The next part of this story is one of my Dad’s shining moments, in my eyes. My Dad asked me “So what did you want to get?” I pointed to “Battleground” he said “But you have $5.00, isn’t there anything else you want?” I said “Nope, just that” he replied “There has to be something else here” I responded “No, just that” he came back with “But you don’t have enough, that toy is $7.99 and you only have $5.oo” Now I must point out, it is not that my Dad was unwilling to spend more money, it was that he worked at Woolco making a retail wage, with a wife and 3 kids, it was more he did not have the extra money on that day. I said “Then let’s go home” my Mom tapped him on the shoulder the they spoke really close face to face, my Dad turned around and said “Ok” he counted back the first 3 boxes, grabbed the 4th one, looked at me and said “Never take the one in front” put it under his arm went to the cash register and he paid the difference. Little did he know How He Made My day buying this toy I had wanted for so long. Later in 1977 he did the exact same thing for my birthday but with “KISS: Alive” record LP. I have never forgotten about this Dad. I did get the “1972 Blue & Gray” Civil War set for Xmas ‘73, and the “1975 Prehistoric” Dinosaurs and Cavemen set for my birthday in 1975.

Now, from the very 1st time I saw an ad for “Planet Of The Apes” I was hooked, back then that was my jam, as much as KISS is now. I started collecting anything “Planet Of The Apes” I could. I 1st got the 1973 Aurora model kits, “Dr. Zaius” “Cornelius” “General Ursus” and “General Aldo” as well as the 3 puzzles and board game and 3″ figures and comics. In 1972 the MEGO toy company started releasing 8″ action figures, on Xmas ’74, I got the “1974 Mego Planet Of The Apes” action figures, “Dr. Zaius” “Gorilla Soldier” and the “Astronaut” and “Ape City” play set.

In about 1975 I started building model kits, from the influence of my next door neighbor Chuck. My favorite manufacturer by far was Tamiya, followed by Monogram, Revell & Aurora. I built everything, from tanks, to jeeps to planes to ships, even cars. As I mentioned it was about 1976 I rediscovered my record collection, Beatles, Monkees, Steppenwolf, Osmond Brothers, Black Sabbath & KISS and I gave up on toys, until about 1990 or so.
