“BUZZ:Newspaper Article” Oct- Nov 2011 (#8-H)

By: R.L. Schwinden aka MrZero

Greetings Fans; MrZero here with installment #8. With the flurry of rumors about “Black Sabbath” reforming, I thought I would cover one of the biggest influences in my life as well as one of the most misunderstood bands of all time !!! So in the article I am going to take a entirely new approach, so take your protein pill, strap on your helmet and let’s go for a ride !!!!

*The Genesis: 1967- 1969

In 1967 there was a band named “The Rest” with Tony Iommi (Anthony Frank Iommi : 19Feb1948 Aston, Birmingham, UK) Son of Italian Immigrants. The Drummer was one Bill Ward (William Thomas Ward: 5May1948 Aston, Birmingham, UK). “The Rest” was offered some gigs in Germany and Iommi was going to leave his factory job as a machinist, on the last day of his employment, while cutting sheet metal he accidentally cut off 2 of his fingertips on his right hand which was his fingering hand, as he played left handed. Not to be detoured this youngster made his own prosthetic fingertips, which he called:”Thimbles” by melting plastic on his kitchen stove and decided it would be easier to play guitar if he tuned down a step and a half to C# from E. Heavy Metal is born…

A short time later there was a Band in 1968 “Mythology” There are recordings of “Mythology” like “Dust My Broom” & “Spoonful”. Meanwhile Ozzy (John Michael Osbourne: 3dec1948 Aston, Birmingham UK) & Geezer Butler (Terrance Michael Joseph Butler: 17jul1949 Birmingham, UK) Called Geezer because he was the youngest of the group, were playing in a band called “Rare Breed” There is a recording of Ozzy, probably from this time “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” These 4 lads came together with 2 other guys: Jimmy Phillips on slide guitar & Alan “Aker” Clarke on saxophone & became the Polka Tulk Blues Company there is an Instrumental “Thomas James” out there of this 6 piece band. Then the 4 main members became Polka Tulk. In Sep 1968 the boys renamed themselves “Earth” which there are several recordings out there: “Song for Jim (Simpson)” “The Rebel” “When I Came Down” “Electric Sleep” “Early One Morning” “Earth (inst)” For a brief time 2 weeks in Dec 1968 Tony Iommi was in “Jethro Tull” appearing in the “RollingStones: Rock N Roll Circus” performing “Song For Jeffery” the band performs some 78 shows as Earth, before renaming themselves “Black Sabbath”

*What Is This… 1969

August 1969 the 4 lads from Birmingham see and ad for a 1963 Italian/ French film with Boris Karloff and decide to write a song of the same name and also rename the band the same name “Black Sabbath” However their first single is a cover by: Minneapolis Band “Crow” the song “Evil Woman (don’t play no games with me)” in Jan 1970. The 1st LP is released on Fri 13 Feb 1970 The song “Black Sabbath” is about the Devil or Death itself coming after someone. “The Wizard” is about um, well a Wizard, perhaps “Lord of the Rings”. “Behind the Wall of Sleep” is most likely about opium. “N.I.B.” (Pronounced Nib, is a reference to Bill Ward’s beard) is about the Devil falling in love with a human woman. “Wicked World” is about all the evils and injustice in the world. The band perform some 144 shows on the tour for the 1st LP.

*Take The Sleep…1970
“Paranoid” is released in Jan 1970 Initially this album was to be entitled “War Pigs” but the record label thought this was a bad idea. “War Pigs” is about the Viet Nam War. “Paranoid” is about mental depression. “Planet Caravan” is about traveling through outer space while on hallucinogenics. “Iron Man” is about the comic book character. “Electric Funeral” is about nuclear war. “Hand of Doom” is warning against doing drugs. “Fairies Wear Boots” is about what you can see while on hallucinogenics. Around 128 concerts were played for the tour of the 2nd album. On 25 May 1970 the band perform in Bremen on German TV for the program “Beat Club” performing “Blue Suede Shoes” & “Black Sabbath” The famous footage of “Paranoid” & “Iron Man” is from 26 Sep 1970.

Some 128 shows were performed for the tour of this album the opening concert being in St. Paul, Mn. at the Civic arena with opener ‘Bloodrock’ Collector’s note: The 1st pressing of this LP contains a Poster of the band by a tree & the track listing of: 1. *Will My Iceage Ever Come…1972
“Vol 4” is released in Sep 1972 originally entitled “Snowblind” for the band’s choice of recreational usage of a certain illicit substance. “Wheels of Confusion” is about a person pondering his life. “Tomorrow’s Dream” is about a romantic breakup and leaving to start over. “Changes” is about a romantic breakup and how their life will be without the other person. “Supernaut” is apparently how Ozzy felt while using his recreation of choice. “Cornucopia” is about the excesses of life cannot make you happy or save your sanity. “St. Vitus’ Dance” (a biblical reference to epilepsy) is about a misunderstanding between a romantic couple. “Under the Sun” Is about believing in yourself and letting others influence you in what to think.
Around 71 concerts were played to support this LP, the remainder of the US Tour is canceled due to Ozzy having a motorcycle accident. Sometime in 1973 “Attention: Black Sabbath” is released on the Fontana label #6438 -057 containing “Evil Woman” & 7 other tracks pulled from the 1st 2 LPs, later in 1975 “Attention Vol. 2” is released with 7 tracks pulled from the 1st 3 LPs.
*Tomorrows Become Yesterday…1973
“Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” is released in Nov 1973 The title song seems to refer to a hopeless depression. “A National Acrobat” is about the hereafter when you die ie. Heaven “Sabra Cadabra” is about a guy madly in love with is girl. “Killing Yourself to Live” is about the perils of drug usage. “Who Are You?” is about exposing someone or something ie. Government and their lies. “Looking for Today” is about the bands recent experiences in the music business.” Spiral Architect” appears to be about a person pondering the universe and is happy to be part of it. As drugs start to really take their toll on the band only 59 shows are performed this tour. The band appear at the legendary ‘California Jam’ on 6 April 1974, this show is filmed and recorded.

*Why Doesn’t Everybody Leave Me Alone…1975
“Sabotage” is released in Jul 1975 “Hole in the Sky” is about a person disillusioned with the world wanting to escape to heaven, “Symptom of the Universe” seems to be a love song of sorts perhaps for a woman or the person’s child. “Megalomania” is about a person’s deteriorating mental health. “Thrill of it All” seems to be about longing to be free or the age old question “what is it all about” “Am I Going Insane” well pretty self explanatory here, folks. “The Writ” is about their legal hassles in the music business. To promote this album some 78 shows are performed including an appearance on ‘Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert’ on 25 Oct 1975.

*Turning on the Nation…1976
“Technical Ecstasy” is released in Nov 1976 “Backstreet Kids” about a kid from Birmingham who has big dreams of getting out of the slums though Rock N Roll.” You Won’t Change Me” another song about believing in yourself and do not let yourself be influenced by others way of thinking. “It’s Alright” sung by Bill Ward, and covered by ‘Guns N Roses’ is about living a good life and things will be… “Gypsy” is about an evil woman who one should not get involved with. “All Moving Parts Stand Still” is about a crooked transvestite politician. “Rock N Roll Doctor” when you’re feeling down, take a dosage of Rock N Roll. “She’s Gone” another break up song this one he loses his fiancée. “Dirty Women” is about women who can be obtained monetarily. The tour for this album was some 86 dates. I have 8mm footage from the 28 Oct 1976 in Des Moines, Iowa @ Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium date with the opener ‘Boston’. Ozzy frustrated with the direction of the band quits in Nov 1977.
In 1977 in response to Ozzy leaving the band, Patrick Meehan releases a “Greatest Hits” LP 10 tracks pulled from the 1st 5 Black Sabbath LPs. The cover is a section “El triunfo de la muerte” (“The Triumph of Death”) By: of Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s. In the spring of 1978 The Mormon Church of Latter Day Saints, had aired a TV commercial with the background music using the song “Laguna Sunrise” from the Black Sabbath LP “We Sold Our Souls For Rock N Roll” (that was released on 3 Feb 1976). When someone brought it to the attention of Church Leaders that they were in fact using a song by “Black Sabbath” the commercial was pulled immediately.

*You’re Coming Home Again Tomorrow…1978
“Never Say Die” is released in Sep 1978 These sessions were originally started with singer Dave Walker from ‘Savoy Brown’ The title song is about not giving up in life (perhaps an RAF motto). Johnny Blade is about a street punk. “Junior’s Eyes” appears to be about a son losing his father, (there is a demo with Walker singing). “Hard Road” is about life is a hard road so make the best of it.”Shock Wave” another one about mental illness & death. “Air Dance” is about a dancer looking back on her career. “Over to You” is about a person who handed his future over to the government. “Swinging the Chain” is about the state of Rock N Roll and the future of rock stars, the 2nd song sung by Bill Ward, because Ozzy didn’t want to. For the 10th Anniversary/ final tour with Ozzy they perform some 110 dates, most of these are done with ‘Van Halen’ as the opening act.
*I Love My Woman … 1980
In July 1980 former manager Patrick Meehan released “Live At Last” from a 16 Mar 1973 concert recorded in London at the Rainbow Theater in Finnsbury Park. This is the 1st official yet Unofficial “Live” LP from the band. Several interesting things about this LP, it contains a pre- studio version of Killing Yourself To Live” and another song now known as “Untitled”
In closing, yes the music is dark and mostly written by Tony Iommi, and the lyrics, written mostly by Geezer Butler are very poetic and full of imagery, however the predominate themes are 1. Mental Health 2. Romantic break ups 3. Drug use and what can happen by using drugs 4. Nuclear War 5. Politicians and Government 6. Faith in God & Religion 7. Fear of the Devil… Seems to me this is the most misunderstood band of all time !!!!!! So put on some Black Sabbath and get educated just like I did…

“You Wanted The Best … You Got It !”
“BUZZ: Newspaper Article; May- Jun 2013 (#27-Z)

I have spent the majority of my life following this band, as it is their 40th Anniversary I thought I would write an article covering their many band line ups & releases, as I hear everyday, day after day for over 30 years “I have all their albums” I bet there’s more than a few in this article you didn’t even know about !!!
> When The Bell Rings: 1970- 1972 < A drummer Named Peter Cris was in a band named Chelsea with a bass player Michael Benvenga (deceased) they released 1 LP in 1970 on Decca Records, later Chelsea picked up a guitar player named Stan Penridge (deceased) the band split up in Aug 1971 & became "Lips". Meanwhile in 1971 the band Wicked Lester consisting of Gene Klein, Stanley Eisen, Stephen Coronel on guitar, Brooke Ostrander on Keyboards, Tony Zarrella on drums & later replacing Coronel on guitar was Ron Leejack. Wicked Lester recorded 1 LP in July 1972 for Epic Records which is still unreleased, but the cover was used for The Laughing Dogs 1st LP in 1977. > 100,000 Years: 1973- 1976 < Sometime in 1972 Gene Simmons (Chaim Witz: 25 Aug 1949 Haifa, Israel later renamed Gene Klein) & Paul Stanley (Stanley Harvey Eisen: 20 Jan 1952 Manhattan) read an ad posted by Peter Criss (George Peter John Criscuola: 20 Dec 1945 Brooklyn) in RollingStone magazine, Simmons called Criss & arranged a meeting. Criss was Hired to be the drummer in the duo's new band still going under the name Wicked Lester. In Jan 1973 Ace Frehley (Paul Daniel Frehley: 27 Apr 1951 Bronx) auditioned for the new band & was subsequently hired for the new band renamed "KISS" the name was Stanley's idea, with the logo designed by Frehley. A 5 song demo was recorded by Eddie Kramer @ Electric Lady Studios in Mar 1973. The band's 1st LP "KISS" was released in Feb 1974 distributed by WB, originally only 9 songs. The 1st 45 single was "Nothin To Lose" b/w Love Theme From Kiss" In May 1974 they released the 45 single "Kissin Time b/w Nothin To Lose" & re-released their 1st LP with the extra track "Kissin Time" then in Aug the band release a 3rd single from this LP "Strutter b/w 100,000 Years” this 1st LP, is one of the 3 most favorite LPs they released. In Oct 1974 the band released their 2nd LP "Hotter Than Hell" with the single "Hotter Than Hell b/w Let Me Go Rock And Roll". (I wrote an article on this period in March 2012 for BUZZ you can read it @ www.MrZeros.Com “BLOG”). In Mar 1975 their 3rd LP is released "Dressed To Kill" with 2 singles "Rock And Roll All Nite b/w Getaway" followed by "Com'on And Love Me" in Jul '75. The band's 1st live LP comes out in Sep 1975 titled "Alive" with a tour booklet enclosed, & the single "Rock And Roll All Nite (Alt. Live Version) b/w (the studio version) in Oct '75, this is by far their best selling LP. > Great Expectations: 1976 -1977 < Then a new direction for KISS with "Destroyer" in Mar 1976 (a 2nd Criss song "None Of Your Business" was left off the LP) & the single "Shout It Out Loud (edit) b/w Sweet Pain" released before the LP, this is another of the band’s favorite releases. Then in April "Flaming Youth b/w God Of Thunder" with the 1st and only Picture Sleeve by the original Band. Then in Aug the band's biggest selling song ever "Beth b/w Detroit Rock City (radio edit)" #7 on the Billboard Chart. In July riding high on the success of "Beth" the band release "The Originals" a re-release of the 1st three LPs with a booklet, sticker, iron-on & trading cards. "The Originals" had a 2nd run marked by the words "2nd Pressing". Later in Nov '76 "Rock And Roll Over" is released, (a song "Queen For A Day" was to be Frehley's 1st lead vocal on LP, but was left off the LP) the 1st run of this LP, had silver ink & contained 2 stickers inside, the 2nd run, had the less expensive gray ink & 1 sticker inside. 2 singles were released from this LP "Hard Luck Woman b/w Mr. Speed" again before the LP was released & then in Feb 1977 "Calling Dr. Love (radio edit) b/w Take Me". In Jun 1977 the 1st single from "Love Gun" comes out "Christine Sixteen (ext) b/w Shock Me" with the LP coming out later in Jun, followed by the 2nd single "Love Gun b/w Hooligan" in July 1977. In Japan Only: "The Originals II" comes out with the last 3 studio LPs from 1976- 1977. With 3 more studio LPs behind them the band release a 2nd concert LP in Oct 1977 "Alive II" with 2 singles "Shout It Out Loud (Live) b/w "Nothin To Lose (Live)" followed by "Rocket Ride (radio edit) b/w Tomorrow And Tonight (Live)" Sometime in 1977 the band 'Treasure' with Vincent Cusano on guitar & vocals release an LP on Epic Records, about this same time Epic Records had remixed the "Wicked Lester" recordings for release, KISS had to buy back the rights to the recordings to keep them from being released. > Rip And Destroy: 1978 < In April 1978 KISS release their 1st "Best Of" LP in "Double Platinum" which came with a cardboard award with re-recorded "Strutter '78 b/w Shock Me" as the single. Then in an industry 1st all 4 members release solo LPs at once, (each containing poster that fit together to make a larger mural) in Sep '78. The catalog numbers reflect who turned in their LP 1st. Gene Simmons with the single "Radioactive (radio edit) b/w "See you In Your Dreams (solo ver)" then Ace Frehley who's single was "New Your Groove b/w Snowblind" a #13 hit on the Billboard Chart, followed by Peter Criss, which had 2 singles released from his solo LP "Don't You Let Me Down b/w Hooked On Rock N Roll" & the 2nd "You Still Matter To Me (retitled)" & finally Paul Stanley with his single "Hold Me, Touch Me b/w Goodbye" if you bought all 4 solo LPS at once you received a limited edition shopping bag. In Oct 1978 KISS releases a TV Movie: "KISS Meets The Phantom Of The Park" (VHS only) this film came out as a theatrical release in Europe & contained a very different soundtrack utilizing only KISS music. Also released only in Europe was the LP "Best of The Solo Albums" with 3 songs each, from Ace, Peter, Gene & Paul. > Hard Times: 1979- 1980 < 1979 brings another huge change for the band as they release "Dynasty" in May '79 the LP comes with a poster. 2 singles are released "I Was Made For Lovin You (edit) b/w Hard Times (ext)" a #11 hit on the Billboard chart, released shortly before the LP comes out. Then in Sep "Sure Know Something b/w Dirty Livin" is released. Disco being the current rage of the time, 2 extended 12" singles are also released from this LP "I Was Made For Lovin You (7:54min) b/w Charisma" & later that year "Dirty Livin (5:47min) b/w Sure Know Something" In June 1979 the band ‘Blackjack’ (with Bruce Kulick) released their LP on Polydor records. Peter Criss is still technically in the band however Anton Fig (8 Aug 1952 Cape Town, South Africa) plays on 8 out of 9 tracks on "Dynasty" & all of the following LP "Unmasked" released in May 1980 (also containing a poster inside the record). Only 1 single is released from this LP "Shandi b/w Naked City" although not playing on the LP Criss will appear in the video for "Shandi" Criss was fired from the band on 18 May 1980 just 2 days before "Unmasked" was released. Sometime in June 1980 Eric Carr (Paul Charles Caravello; 12 Jul 1950: Brooklyn NYC. – 24 Nov 1991) was hired to replace Criss. Carr himself came up with "The Fox" persona. Sometime in 1980 Blackjack (Bruce Kulick) releases their 2nd LP "Worlds Apart". One reason Criss did not participate in the "Unmasked" sessions was he was working on his 2nd solo LP "Out Of Control" released in Sep 1980 with the single "By Myself b/w I Found Love" > Only You: 1981- 1982 < The success of another band's 'Concept Album’ KISS decides to try their hand at a 'concept record' from a story Simmons (with Lou Reed) had written, "The Elder" is released in Nov 1981. The original idea was to release the 1st part of the soundtrack (the LP had the original running order and plastic inner sleeve), then the Film (starring Christopher Makepeace as; 'The Boy') then part 2 of the soundtrack. When the film was scraped, they used some footage to create a video for the song "I". The LP was then re-issued with a different running order & paper inner sleeve with lyrics. There are 2 very different versions of each format, LP, CASS & CD. This is Carr's 1st official KISS recording, Frehley unhappy with the result begins to consider leaving the band. In May 1982 Peter Criss releases his 3rd solo LP "Let Me Rock You" with songs by Simmons & Vincent, however this LP is only released in Europe. In June the same year KISS release a 2nd "Best Of" titled "Killers" with 4 new songs that were from the aborted LP intended to be released after "Unmasked" but before "The Elder" this LP “Killers” was only released in Europe as well, however a CD did come out in Japan. The band reconvene & decide to get back to rock, in Nov 1982 "Creatures Of The Night" is released with the single "I Love It Loud b/w Danger" (the 2nd 45 picture sleeve) this is another of the band’s favorite releases. Though Frehley is pictured on the album & in the video he is absent from the recordings, in his place KISS has hired Vinnie Vincent (Vincent John Cusano; 6 Aug 1952: Bridgeport, Con) to replace Frehley in Dec 1982. Vincent is on the recordings for "Creatures" & this is the last KISS release on the 8Track format. Vincent wears make up created by Paul Stanley consisting of a gold Ankh, for the persona of the Egyptian Wizard. An Eric Carr song "Don't Leave Me Lonely" was left off this LP but released by Bryan Adams (who wrote 3 other songs with KISS) in Jan 1983. KISS performs 1 final tour in their famous makeup from Dec 1982 to Jun 1983. > All Hell’s Breaking Loose: 1983- 1985 < After a full decade of wearing the trade-mark makeup in Sep 1984 the band take it off on MTV to launch the release of "Lick It Up" the 1st fully fledged LP with Vincent (who wrote 8 of the 10 songs) with the single "Lick It Up b/w Dance All Over Your Face" in Sep, then & in Feb 1984 a "promo" 12" single of "All Hell's Breaking Loose" with a video. Vincent was fired from KISS in Mar 1984. In mid 1984 "W.O.W." is released by: Wendy O. Williams (1949-1998) on Passport Records. Why is this mentioned? This LP contains several songs left off "Creatures" & the demos for the soon to be, although abandoned LP that was scheduled after "Lick It Up" This LP was produced by Simmons & has performances by: Simmons, Stanley, Frehley, Carr & Vincent. With Vincent now gone Paul Stanley hires Mark St. John (Mark Leslie Norton: 7 Feb 1956 Hollywood –5 April 2007) in May 1984, the new line-up releases "Animalize" in Sep 1984 with the singles "Heaven's On Fire b/w Lonely Is The Hunter" a #49 hit on the Billboard chart, & in Jan 1985 "Thrills In The Night (edit) b/w Burn Bitch Burn". In a strange but necessary move Bruce Kulick (Bruce Howard Kulick: 12 Dec 1953 Brooklyn) brother of frequent KISS session guitarist Bob Kulick: (16 Jan 1950 NYC), is hired in Sep 1984, after performing on 2 tracks on the "Animalize" LP. Bruce performs the European tour with KISS a total of some 40 concerts before St. John came back to perform an entire 3 concerts, with KISS, before he was fired in Dec 1984. The concert from 8 Dec 1984 in Detroit @ Cobo Hall was filmed & recorded, 1st aired on MTV's "Saturday Night Concert” series, then released (on VHS only) as "Animalize Alive Uncensored" in April 1985, Carr gets to sing 2 songs in this video "Young And Wasted" & "Black Diamond" In Sep 1985 KISS release "Asylum" the 1st LP with their 4th guitarist who will end up staying 12 years total. With the single "Tears Are Falling b/w Any Way You Slice It" following a long standing tradition of a Stanley song as the "A" side & a Simmons song as the "B" side of a 45 single. > Thief In The Night: 1986- 1987 < KISS essentially took 1986 off. However some other related releases came out such as Bruce Kulick's "Hot Lick's" (VHS only) released sometime in 1986. This same year Mark St. John returns with his band "White Tiger" on EMC Records. In Aug Vinnie Vincent releases "Invasion" his 1st solo LP with at least 3 songs left over from the previously mentioned 'Post: Lick It Up demos' The Vinnie Vincent song “Back on the Streets” was originally recorded by KISS for “Creatures” then recorded by Ace on his original Demo for Bronze Records in 1984, & finally released on Vincent’s 1st LP. The year is 1987 the 1st thing KISS puts out in a while is "Exposed" in May (VHS only) a collection of video spots new & old, followed by "Crazy Nights" in Sep, originally titled "Who Dares Wins" (I have an ad stating this, from summer 1987) with 3 singles starting with "Crazy, Crazy Nights b/w/ No No No (originally titled 'Assume The Position')" coming out almost 1 month ahead of the LP. Then in Nov "Reason to Live b/w Thief in The Night" followed by "Turn On The Night b/w Hell Or High Water" in Feb 1988. There were 3 songs left off the LP, the Simmons song "Are You Always This Hot" Stanley's "Sword And Stone" & Carr's "Dial 'L' For Love". Ace's KISS contract finally ran out in 1986 which lead to Ace releasing his 1st solo LP "Frehley's Comet" in July with the single "Into The Night b/w Fractured Too" So there you are kiddies phase one of my abridged "Collecting KISS Book" Stay tuned for "Phase 2" Until the next time .... Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart in
“Two For the Price of One”

“BUZZ: Newspaper Article: Jan- Feb 2012 (#11-K)

Greetings Fans,

It’s good to be back in the new year of 2012,
I decided I would cover my favorite musical duo:

*How it all started:
I first heard of “Boyce & Hart” when I was playing my Uncle John’s Monkees 1st LP from 1966. I saw they wrote some of my favorite songs on the record like “Last to Clarksville” “Tomorrow’s Gonna be Another Day” “This Just Doesn’t Seem to be My Day” Then one day after school I was watching “I Dream of Jeannie” and it was the episode “Hip, Hippy” from 17 Oct 1967 with Boyce & Hart performing the songs “Out and About” & “Love Everyday”. I thought those are the guys that wrote songs for the Monkees?!?!?!? Cool, they have their own songs out too … ! One time on a trip with my parents to Jerome, Az. my Dad said to me “You know that Monkees song you like “Last Train to Clarksville” well it was written about this town here, Clarksdale, AZ. in an interview I did with Bobby Hart in 1993 I asked Bobby about this and Bobby confirmed what my Dad had said was true.

*Meeting the Guys:
I first met Tommy Boyce in Jun 1986 at a Monkees concert in Des Moines, Iowa. I later met up with Tommy, and then also met Bobby Hart (& Tommy’s 1st wife Bobbi) in Chicago Aug 1990 at a Monkees Convention. I remember Tommy saying “That’s quite a girlfriend you have there, mind if I give her a kiss?” I said without thinking “If I can kiss your wife” Tommy said “Fine with me” Many years later a girlfriend of mine would inform me that she used to wait on Tommy at “Barbara’s Bar” in Nashville “He used to sit on the end of the bar and order Jack & Coke”

Through Bobby I met Drummer Billy R. Lewis in 1993 and I became friends with both Bobby & Billy and eventually Tommy’s 2nd wife Caroline, after Tommy’s death. In 1995 I put together a rough draft presentation of a “Behind the Music: Boyce & Hart: Two for the Price of One” unfortunately we could not find a producer to pick up (fund) the project. I was such a huge fan of B&H, I had Bobby record an answering machine message for me in 1995 I used for many years, I used to get some ribbing from my friends about that, but it sure kept the telemarketers at bay.

*The Cast of Characters:
Tommy Boyce (Sidney Thomas Boyce, 29 Sep 1939 Charlottesville, Virginia- RIP: 23 Nov 1994 Nashville, TN)
Bobby Hart (Robert Luke Harshman, 18 Feb 1939, Phoenix, Arizona)
The Candy Store Prophets: 1965-1967
Billy Reid Lewis (14 Aug 1940 Santa Monica, CA- RIP: 7 May 2005), Louie Shelton (6 Apr 1941 Little Rock, Ar) & Larry “The Mole” Taylor (Samuel Taylor 26 Jun 1942, NYC) Gerry McGee (1937 Eunice, Louisiana)

* Solo 45 Single Records
Tommy Boyce released 18 singles from 1960 to 1973 on various labels such as: Dot, RCA, Colpix, MGM, A&M, R-Dell, WOW, Capitol & Chelsea. Some of his best songs: “Come Here Joann” “I’ll Remember Carol” “Let’s Go Where the Action Is” “Pretty Thing” & “Eve Laurain” Tommy’s 1st solo LP was “A Twofold Talent” in 1968 on RCA- Camden (his 1961-63 RCA recordings) and also released a solo LP under the name “Christopher Cloud” in 1973 on Chelsea records.

Bobby Hart released 14 Singles from 1959 to 1980 on various labels as: Guyden, Radio, Reel, Bamboo, Era, Infinity, DCP, Chelsea, Warner Bros. & Ariola. Some of his best songs: “Love Whatcha Doin To Me” “Hard Core Man” (from “Freebie & The Bean” 1974 WB) & “Lovers For The Night” Bobby released a solo LP in 1979 titled “The First Bobby Hart Solo Record”

Tommy and Bobby met in 1959 in LA at a recording studio Bobby worked at, the 1st meeting was to help a mutual friend Curtis Lee break into the music biz. B&H began writing together in 1960 at first writing what they called answer songs for example Jim reeves had a song titled “He’ll Have To Go” so B&H wrote a song called “She’ll Have To Stay” in their writing style it was generally one finishing up a song the other had brought to the table. B&H were brought into the famous Brill Building a song writers office in NYC where they started churning out the hits starting with “Lazy Elsie Molly” a #40 hit on 11Jul1964 for Chubby Checker.

*Hey hey the Man with the Golden Ear
B&H were hired by “The Man With The Golden Ear” Donnie Kirshner in 1965 to write hit pop songs for the new 1966 TV Show “The Monkees” Kirshner liked their song “Come A Little Bit Closer” #3 hit for Jay & the Americans on 21Nov1964. So the duo went to work and penned 3 songs for the pilot episode “Theme from the Monkees” “I Wanna Be Free” & “Let’s Dance On” in fact B&H wrote more songs for The Monkees, than any other outside writers26 in total, with the exception being Michael Nesmith. B&H have at least 1 song if not up to 7 songs on 8 of the 9 original 60s Monkees LPs including songs on their 1986- 87 reunion LPs.

One of my all time favorite songs “Words” recorded in 1966 & again 67 I asked Tommy “where did the inspiration come from” Tommy replied “Bobby & I used to fly from New York to LA all the time and the was a stewardess we used to see on most of our flights, one time she gave us a card and inside it said in big letters “WORDS, are not enough to express what you two mean to me” so we used that as the title and it went from there”. Also in 1965 the duo were hired to write the theme music for a new daytime soap opera “Day’s Of Our Lives” Bobby recalled “Originally each character had their own theme music when they entered the room or scene”

Boyce & Hart also wrote songs for such varied artists as: Fats Domino, The Ikettes, Freddy Cannon, Herman’s Hermits, Del Shannon, Paul Revere & Raiders, Little Anthony & Imperials, The Astronauts, Austin Roberts, Helen Reddy, Partridge Family, Josie & Pussycats, Keith Alison, Boston Tea Party, Pineapple Heard, Ray Peterson, Dino, Desi & Billy, Iggy Pop, ShowWaddyWaddy, Connie Cato, Kathy Garver, Sunday Sharpe, Willie Burgundy Five, Robbie Nevil, New Edition, Latoya Jackson, Scooby Doo and so many more….

*At the Record Shops
Boyce & Hart released 3 LPs the 1st is “Test Patterns” in 1967 stand out tracks to me are: “Shadows” “For Baby” & “Life” their 2nd LP “I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonight?” in early 1968 stand out tracks for me are: “Two For The Price Of One” (Larry Wiliams & Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson) “Teardrop City” & “Population” their 3rd and final LP was “It’s All Happening On The Inside” in late 1968 with stand out tracks to me being: “Strawberry Girl” “Jumpin Jack Flash” & “My Baby Loves Sad Songs” and in an unusual move B&H with their band recorded an entire LP with Trini Lopez “The Whole Enchilada” in 1969 on Warner Bros. with 3 B&H songs including “Sunshine Park”. Billy Lewis told my about this LP in 1993 and I finally found one 12 years later.

*Billboard Pop Hits:
Boyce & Hart released 9 Singles from 1967 to 1969 which 8 of them were on A&M “I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonite” #8 on the charts 24Feb1968, b/w “The Ambushers” from the 1967 Dean Martin film of the same name. “Alice Long” #27 on the charts 2Aug1968, “Out And About” #39 on the charts 5Aug1967, “Goodbye Baby” # 53 on the charts 27Apr1968, b/w “Where Angles Go” from the 1968 Stella Stevens film of the same name.

The last one on their own ‘B&H Aquarian’ “I’ll Blow You A Kiss in The Wind” & “Smilin” from the TV show ‘Bewitched’ on 19 Feb 1970 in “Serena Stops the Show” oddly enough “Smilin” was re-written as a “Coca Cola” jingle in 1969. B&H also appeared on the TV show ‘Flying Nun’ 20 Mar 1970 in “When Generations Gap” the performed the songs “Let’s All Take A Trip To Nashville” & “I Thank You”

*Stories from the Road:
In 1968 B&H got involved with the Robert Kennedy Presidential Election Campaign, as well as the campaign to lower the voting age from 21 to 18 and to promote this message their 8th single was titled “L.U.V.” (let us vote). My long time friend Larry saw B&H perform at the Robert Kennedy Memorial Concert at the Minneapolis Met Center with Sonny & Cher as the headliner except Cher was pregnant with Chasity and Sonny went on by himself and a girl they found locally to fill in for Cher. Bobby remembered “Yea, once we heard what was going to happen we went on first and got the heck outta there” Billy Lewis recalled “The Moody Blues” were on the bill too, however their equipment was held up in customs so they couldn’t perform that night” My friend Larry remembered “I saw the Boyce & Hart Logo stenciled on the side of the band’s equipment cases and thought Oh, man that must be the life, to be a musician” The band also did a concert on top of a bank building in downtown Des Moines, Iowa when asked Bobby remembered “Oh, yea that was a freebie, I’m sure…”

In Dec 1969 when B&H were the opening act for Zsa Zsa Gabor in Las Vegas when some producers approached to do their own TV Show set for fall 1970, B&H & band filmed a live concert in Phoenix for use in the upcoming TV Show. The end of B&H came when their Manager Chuck Ashman took off with a large sum of money during the Las Vegas stint with Zsa Zsa, Tommy was devastated as he looked at Ashman as a mentor, not just a manager. Tommy was so distraught he left the music & show biz for a couple years. Many years later in 1994 Tommy was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and informed it was inoperable and could eventually erupt and leave him in a coma state. Tommy did not want to end up this way so he took matters into his own hands and chose to end his own life with a .22 pistol on 23 Nov 1994. Bobby is currently working on his Book and his own websites such as www.bobbyhart.net .

*In Closing…
I will admit a lot of people have not heard of Boyce & Hart, but all most every one has heard at least one of their songs and that was the point of this particular article. I have to give acknowledgement to my long time friend Lew Claussen, for whom without his vast knowledge I would not have obtained the massive B&H Collection I have today…..

Until, the next one………… Cheers MrZero here in St. Paul (www.mrzeros.com)

Jimi Hendrix: The One & Only
“BUZZ: Newspaper Article: Mar -Apr 2011 (#1-A)

As this is my first article for this publication I would like to cover (and dispel some misinformation on) the greatest musician of all time:

Jimi Hendrix:
I discovered Jimi by the songs “Purple Haze” & “Foxey Lady” in 1972 I believe, it was, my Dad bought a 4LP Set By: WB. I could not believe the sounds I heard from these records. So the 1st album I bought by Jimi Hendrix was ‘Smash Hits’ I loved the cover and the songs it contained was out of this world for me. The stand outs for me from this LP: (besides the 2 already mentioned) “Fire” “Hey Joe” “Stone Free” and what I feel may be the greatest song of all time “All Along The Watchtower”

I did not get to see Jimi in my lifetime, However I have met people who knew Jimi or did see Jimi in concert A friend of mine Dan was able to catch Jimi on Sun 3 May 1970 in St.Paul @ Civic Center, tickets #5.50, he said “After every other song, Jimi would say ‘I have a question for you? …’ then at the very end of the show he said ‘Why?’

The Setlsit:
Fire
Room Full of Mirrors
*Lover Man
*Hear My Train a Comin’
*Ezy Ryder
Machine Gun *Freedom
Foxy Lady
Red House
The Star-Spangled Banner
Purple Haze
Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

I have listened to & watched untold hours of Jimi’s music in studio & in concert. It seems live in concert Jimi liked to play covers (*) and unreleased songs as much as songs from his released albums.
Jimi’s history goes like this;

>Stone Free: 1942 <
Born: Johnny Allen Hendrix on 27 November 1942 Seattle, Washington.
His Father Al changed his name to James Marshall Hendrix on 11 September 1946.
Jimi Died on 18 September 1970. A coroner’s inquest ruled “Inhalation of vomit due to barbiturate intoxication” on 28 September 1970.

Jimi started playing acoustic guitar in the autumn of 1958 and then electric guitar by Summer 1959.Jimi joined the 101st Airborne Division as a paratrooper, after a few run ins with the local law enforcement authorities in May 1961. Jimi gave the story he “Broke his ankle during a parachute jump” & was let out of the Army on 2 July 1962. Jimi and his Army buddy Billy Cox (18 Oct 1941 Wheeling, WV.) start playing as musician’s for hire in Oct 1962.

In Mar 1963 Hendrix & Cox form “The King Kasuals” with Larry Lee By late 1963 Jimi is playing and recording with Lonnie Youngblood. Jimi was playing a Silvertone/ Danelectro guitar painted red with the name “Betty Jean” on it, this was Jimi’s childhood sweetheart Jimi traded this guitar into a music store in Clarksville, TN. for an Epiphone Coronet. Interesting note Jimi did not always use a black or white Fender Stratocaster, his was also know to use a white SG Custom (Les Paul type) & a Black left handed Flying “V”

In early 1964 Jimi is touring and recording with the Isley Brothers & Jimi recorded 6 songs on the T-Neck label with the Isley Brothers “Testify Parts 1 & 2″ “The Last Girl” “Move Over and Let Me Dance” “Looking For A Love” & “Have You Ever Been Disappointed” but quits in Oct 1964. However Jimi then begins backing Sam Cooke & Jackie Wilson until Jimi is hired by Little Richard for his backing band in Dec 1964 Jimi is later fired in July 1965 for either “Missing a bus in New York” or “Upstaging Little Richard on stage” They record “I Don’t Know What You’ve Got But It’s Got Me” & b/w“Dancin All Around The World” together for a single release.

It is well known Jimi, Billy Cox & Larry Lee played the “Chitlin Circuit” for many years honing their craft of R&B, Jazz & Early Rock N Roll Standards such as Chuck Berry.
On 27 July 1965 Jimi signs a 2 year record deal with Sue Records in New York City & then signs yet another “Exclusive” record deal on 15 Oct 1965 with PPX Records with then fellow band mate Curtis Knight of ‘The Squires’. This will come back to haunt him later on both contractually and financially.

>51st Anniversary: 1966<
In June 1966 Jimi’s first true band ‘The Rainflowers”’get rechristened as ‘Jimmy James & The Blue Flames’ On 29 Sep 1966 guitarist David Noel Redding (25 Dec 1945 Folkestone Kent, UK – Died: 11 May 2003 County Cork, Ireland) is hired to be the Bassist for Jimi’s new band & this time the Drummer is Ansley Dunbar (10 January 1946 Liverpool, UK.) not John “Mitch” Mitchell (9 Jul 1947 Ealing, UK, – Died: 12 Nov 2008 Portland, Or.), who will eventually be hired on 5 Oct 1966.

It is worth noting that Noel Redding was a guitar player first, this would explain why Noel’s Bass playing is so different than his peers of that time. Noel’s playing is more melodic and brighter as a rhythm instrument closer to say John Entwhistle than Paul McCartney. I would have loved to hear some sessions with Ansley who went on to play everyone from Bowie, Zappa, Flo & Eddie to Journey. However it cannot be denied that Mitch Mitchell’s jazzy drum style as probably the most complimentary to Jimi’s entirely new direction of music. That being said it was Mitch who played with Jimi the 2nd longest only next to Jimi’s army buddy Billy Cox.

The first ever gig of the ‘Jimmy Hendrix Experience’ is on 13 Oct 1966 in Evreux (near Paris) France, the Experience make their first TV appearance on 13 Dec 1966 on ITV’s ‘Ready, Steady, Go’. The Experience record a version of “Day Tripper” on 15 Dec 1967 for BBC’s ‘Top Gear’ contrary to popular belief without Paul McCartney or even John Lennon. This rumor has circulated for many years having heard as much as I have of The Experience it is clearly Noel & Mitch on backing vocals.

>Stars That Play With Laughing Sam’s Dice: 1967<
The Experience’s first US appearance is on 18 Jun 1967 at ‘The Monterey International Pop Festival’ where Jimi does his most famous antic by setting his Stratocaster on fire during “Wild Thing”. Pete Townshend once said about this performance “He’s not stealing my act he’s doing my act” It has been written that Jimi single handedly saved the Fender Stratocaster as “He needed a new one practically every night” On 7 Jul 1967 Jimi sits in with Frank Zappa on stage and discovers the ‘Wah-Wah pedal’, Jimi is later this same day photographed with Zappa for the LP Cover ‘We’re only in it for the Money’.

The Experience then open for TV Pop stars The Monkees for just 8 concert dates from 8-16 July 1967. While on tour in a hotel room Jimi jams with Stephen Stills of the ‘Buffalo Springfield’ & Micky Dolenz of The Monkees. Micky Dolenz had seen Jimi at the Monterey Pop Festival, it has been rumored that Micky saw Jimi in a club in England or even New York prior to the Monterey Pop Festival. Michael Nesmith of The Monkees once said “I would sneak down front every night The Experience opened for us, the music was celestial the band all had Afros, and were back light so when the lights came on it looked like they’re hair was on fire”.

It was Micky Dolenz’s idea to pull some strings to get Jimi on the Monkees ‘Summer Tour’ so Jimi could get some real exposure to the rest of the world, which lead to this odd pair touring together. Micky once said “It became all too much for Jimi & the band, every night to try and do their thing only to be drown out by that chats on the kids in the audience of “We want the Monkees, we want the Monkees” It is rumored on the last night in Forest Hills, New York, Jimi had had enough threw down his guitar & flipped off the audience and walked off the stage. However I can find nothing to confirm or deny this event. Jimi jams & records with his former band leader Curtis Knight on 30 Jul 1967 which will be released as the LP ‘Get That Feeling’ on PPX Records.

>Burning Of The Midnight Lamp: 1968<
On 21 Jan 1968 Jimi records Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” reportedly before Dylan can release his own version. It’s been said Jimi had some concerns about Dylan’s potential reaction to Jimi’s version of Bob’s yet to be released composition. One of Jimi’s early Girlfriends from his New York Village days once said “Jimi came home one day, said he had spent our last $5.oo on a surprise, so what was it a Bob Dylan record! (she laughs) who’s Bob Dylan? I ask. “Jimi loved Bob Dylan specifically his lyrics” Also, asked to, & obliged, Jimi, Noel & Mitch are immortalized for all time in plaster casts by the legendary ‘Plaster Casters’ on 25 Feb 1968.

On 13 Mar 1968 Jimi himself has a recording made of a jam at The Scene Club in New York City one of Jimi’s favorite hang outs with a drunken Jim Morrison of The Doors. This is later released in many Un-Official releases under several titles. It was once stated that Jimi took an open reel recording deck with him everywhere he went, so he could record everything he did.

The Experience regroups on 14 Feb 1969 to work on an aborted 4th album. There is a photo session for this event pictured Jimi, Mitch & Noel , the caption reads “No one told Noel he is no longer in the band”. As Chaz Chandler walked out on Jimi as his manager during the “Electric Ladyland” sessions from frustration due Jimi’s lack of focus and direction (& most likely drug use)
In Mar 1969 Jimi produces several songs for his friend Buddy Miles (George Allen Miles Jr. 5 Sep 1947 Omaha, Neb. – Died: 26 Feb 2008 Austin, TX.) for the album ‘The Buddy Miles Express: Electric Church’. Buddy will jam with Jimi over the next few months and eventually become the Drummer for ‘The Band Of Gypsys’

The last concert performed by The Experience will be on 29 Jun 1969 at the ‘Denver Pop Festival’, the opening band ‘Zephyr’ features a young Guitarist from Sioux City, Iowa one Tommy R. Bolin (more on Tommy at a later date). Jimi headlines the ‘Woodstock’ festival in Bethel, New York on 18 Aug 1969 as ‘Gypsy Sons & Rainbows Band’ An expanded and short lived experimental band with former ‘Kasual’ Larry Lee (Lawrence H. “Larry” Lee, Jr. Mar 7, 1943 – Oct 30, 2007)

>Message Of Love: 1969<
My personal favorite period of Jimi’s career begins on 7 Nov 1969 ‘The Band of Gypsys’ is born. Unfortunately ‘The Band of Gypsys’ dissolves on 28 Jan 1970. They were only able to release one 45 single and one live album, a contractual obligation LP from Jimi signing with PPX Records in 1965, during their existence.

Some tracks that were recorded for a potential “Studio” album were: “Ezy Rider” “Message to Love” “Power of Soul” “Room Full of Mirrors” “Astro Man” “Earth Blues” “It’s Too Bad” sadly no studio album will come from this soulful R&B oriented trio.
I love this period of time, for the reason while The Experience was great and a real trend setter with music and fashion. I still think they are the best dressed band of the 60s as well as the embodiment of the entire 60s movement. It’s been said Jimi was really concerned with his appearance and cloths fashion. Personally I love the funk and R&B direction of The Band of Gypsys. True Buddy’s drumming style is was not as busy as Mitch’s, and Billy’s playing was not as pronounced as Noel’s.

However The Band of Gypsys was to my knowledge the first all black rock band & Jimi created yet another new style of music. Buddy’s voice blends unbelievably well with Jimi’s voice filling a void (to me) that The Experience lacked. The rhythm & groove they created was a new refreshing direction to me. I can still remember the day my buddy Eric loaned ‘The Band of Gypsys’ Live LP in the fall of 1981.

Comedian Phil Hartman (24 Sep 1948 – Died: 28 May 1998) was once a roadie for the ‘Band Of Gypsys’ he said in an interview “Jimi walked in though the back door of the club wearing hot pink pants and white leather boots and said “How you doin?” Later during the performance my boss yelled at me “Phil get up there and stop those drums from falling off the stage”, the drummer at the time was Buddy Miles he was playing this double bass kit that kept moving forward as the night went on. So I ran up there and knelt down and held the drums in place with both hands, that’s when Jimi spoke to me for the second time over the music he yelled “We’re really rockin now aren’t we, Mr. Roadie Man”

I met Buddy Miles through a friend of mine on 13 Jan 2001. I had him sign my ‘Band Of Gypsys’ album. I was most curious about his session work with The Monkees after Buddy had left ‘The Electric Flag’ Buddy said “Yes I was friends with Peter (Tork) and did some jamming and session work for them out in California” Buddy also appeared with The Monkees in their 1968 (aired in 1969) TV Special ‘33 1/3 Monkees Per Revolution’.

>Steppinstone:1970<
In Mar 1970 Jimi will guest appear on sessions with Arthur Lee and long time friend Stephen Stills. The album ‘Stephen Stills’ 1970 Atlantic #19140 the track “Old Times, Good Times” features Jimi on guitar released 30 Nov 1969 the last official studio recording released by Jimi during his lifetime.

Buddy Miles had been let go in early 1970, however Jimi renegotiated with Billy Cox to keep Billy on. It seems Jimi and a real Billy had a real bond & unspoken connection, something that had seriously lacked between Jimi & Noel in The Experience.
On 23 Mar 1970 Jimi’s ‘Cry Of Love’ band is born with Mitch Mitchell & Billy Cox. Then on 30 Jun 1970 Jimi & Eddie Kramer (Edwin H. Kramer 1942 Cape Town, South Africa) christen ‘Electric Lady Studios’. Over the next year ‘Cry of Love’ will record numerous songs that will not be released until after Jimi’s untimely death. Jimi & ‘Cry of Love’s’ last US concert is on 1 Aug 1970. Jimi’s final recording session is held at Electric Ladyland Studios where he records his final song “Belly Button Window” on the 22nd of Aug 1970. Eddie Kramer is still involved with all Jimi’s posthumous releases. Eddie has said “I was very close to Jimi in a working relationship, not much of a personal relationship; Jimi had a lot girlfriends you see” Tommy Bolin once said in 1976 “I wonder how Jimi would feel about all that incomplete stuff coming out, now that he’s gone”

I saw an interview once where Jimi’s Guitar Tech said “In soundcheck one time Jimi was not happy with the “Wah-Wah” that was set up, so he said “Bring me another one” well we always carried 3 of everything on hand in case something broke or went wrong, so I brought another one and Jimi was not happy with that on either, so I brought a 3rd one and Jimi of course was not happy that one either so jimi said “Get a different one” so I brought him the original one we had set up in the first place and Jimi said “Now that’s more like it”

KISS Guitarist Paul “Ace” Frehley (27 Apr 1951 NYC) also was once a roadie for Jimi, Ace “I set up Mitch Mitchell’s drums” for the 4 May 1970 in New York City at the Village Gate. Ace said “I got backstage, I guess because I had the right look, like I belonged back there” Eddie Kramer produced 3 of Ace’s albums and several KISS albums.

> Crash Landing<
Jimi is interviewed for the very last time by journalist Keith Altham on 10 Sep 1970. On 17 Sep 1970 Jimi makes what would be his final appearance on stage when he sits in with Eric Burdon & War at Ronnie Scott’s Club in London, England.
Jimi is found unconscious at the Samarkand Hotel in London on 18 September 1970, he is taken to St. Mary Abbot’s Hospital after the ambulance men are unable to revive him. Just after midday he is officially pronounced dead. Jimi is buried on 1 Oct 1970 in Renton/ Seattle, WA. at Greenwood Cemetery.

What people do not realize is that Jimi only released 3 official albums while he was alive:
1. “Are You Experienced” 12 May 1967
2. “Axis: Bold As Love” 1 December 1967
3. “Electric Ladyland” 25 October 1968

Yet he changed rock music for all time, in just 4 years and with 3 studio records.
Also released while Jimi was alive was:
4. “Get That Feeling” with Curtis Knight in Late 1967
5. “Smash Hits” July 1968
6. “Band Of Gypsy’s” June 1970

As well as eight 45 Singles from 1966 to 1970
Featuring the Non-LP “B” Sides:
“51st Anniversary” “Stone Free” “Highway Chile” “Stepping Stone” “Izabella” (until 1968 all 45 singles were in (compressed) Mono as well as usually edited down for radio and sometimes featured non-lp “B” sides)

The Monkees song writer & session musician Bill Chadwick cut a demo with Jimi in 1967 for Dot Records titled “She’s Living in Surrey” also Bill’s mother used to custom tailor Jimi’s stage shirt’s because “Jimi’s arms were so long” Bill informed me.
When Jimi walked he appeared very tall, yet walked slow and almost shuffled. When he spoke he was shy and humble and with a bit of a lisp from a slight overbite. It seems he tried to create images with his words much like he did with his music. However when took the stage make no mistake he took total control somewhat like Godzilla when it tore through Tokyo. He was a true performer in every sense of the word.

There are hours and hours of unreleased material that Jimi recorded from 1966 to 1970 however Jimi did not release a 4th studio album in his lifetime he only recorded jams. demos and material for the remaining 2 years of his life 1969 & 1970. He did tell The Monkees; Michael Nesmith sometime in 1970 when asked “Why haven’t you released an album in awhile” Jimi replied “Well I have been working on my singing, I have never been real happy with my voice”
So my advice is to seek out a copy of Jimi’s “Smash Hits” put it on, lay back close your eyes, tune in and drop out and if this music doesn’t change your life, well then, there’s really something wrong with you.

The reason I included birth dates and death dates is because to my knowledge The Jimi Hendrix Experience is the first 60s band that all members are now dead. In addition to the stories on other famous musicians included here the response is usually “Was he old enough to be there at that time” I used a myriad of sources for this article. I accept I have made some mistakes and welcome any and all corrections

MONKEES here they come

1967 TV Show

1967 TV Show

Here they come walking down the street…
The Monkees Did in fact play their own instruments & Write Songs
“BUZZ: Newspaper Article: Jun- Jul 2011 (#4-D)

How many times have you heard that in reference to the Monkees ? Unfortunately too many. I myself am sort of an original fan. I have documentation to back this bold statement up, (thanks for writing this down Mom). When I was a toddler, apparently I liked these shows, “Batman” “Lost in Space” & “The Monkees” They all came on about the same time of day back in 1966.

The point of this particular article is to dispel some myths about this television show that became a Pop Band of the 60s.

In Sep 1965 Producers Rafleson & Schneider ran an ad in two local magazines looking for four youngsters to star in a cutting edge TV show titled :”The Creeps” who would also record Folk/ Pop music for the show.

“Davy” David Thomas Jones: (30 Dec 1945 Manchester, UK) Broadway star is already on board to do the new TV show. David has already released 1 Album & three 45 Singles prior to the TV show airing.

“Micky” George Michael Dolenz: (8 Mar 1945 Hollywood, Ca.) Former child star on the TV show “Circus Boy” 1956- 1957 for 2 seasons. Mickey is also lead singer & guitar player for a local cover band “The Missing Links” who recorded one 45 single. He is brought in as the 2nd Monkee.

“Michael” Robert Michael Nesmith: (30 Dec 1942 Houston, TX) sees one of the ads for the casting call on his way to the laundry mat. Nesmith has been playing folk music since 1960 and released 4 solo 45 singles prior to the Monkees TV show.

Peter Halsten Torkleson: (13 Feb 1942 Washington DC) Folk singer form the Greenwich Village Folk Music Scene & former member of “The Mugwumps” (early Mama’s & Papa’s) is referred by Stephen Stills to go down for the auditions. Tork plays many musical instruments: guitar, piano, banjo, bass & french horn.

Many people want to throw darts at the Monkees, saying that they didn’t play their own instruments or write their own songs. Well here’s the tally of who wrote what:
Michael Nesmith: wrote 46 songs for the Monkees. Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart: wrote 26 songs. Gerry Goffin & Carole King: wrote 13 songs. David Jones with Bill Chadwick wrote 16 songs. Peter Tork: wrote 12 songs. Micky Dolenz: wrote 6 songs. Neil Diamond: wrote 5 songs. & Harry Nilsson: wrote 5 songs for the Monkees. While it’s true not all of these songs were released while the Monkees were together from 1966 to 1970 and some have never been released at all, it does show that, at the bare minimum Michael Nesmith was quite prolific, and the other three especially Jones contributed to The Monkees canon.

The Monkees released 9 studio LPS from 1966 to 1970 and 12 singles. In 1966 “The Monkees” and two singles. In 1967 they released three LPs in one year “More of” “Headquarters” & “Pisces, Aquarius” and three singles. In 1968 the LPs “Birds & Bees” & “Head” and three singles. In 1969 the band was down to a trio; Nesmith, Dolenz & Jones and release the LPs “Instant Replay” & “Present” come out as well as three more singles.
The final LP & Single came out in 1970 when the band was down to the duo of Dolenz & Jones.

One thing I find really peculiar is when The Monkees go out and tour every 5 to 10 years, since 1975, the public backlash “Well it’s only the three of them” The reality is The Monkees were only quartet from 1965 to 1968 when Peter Tork left the group in Dec 1968 because of artistic differences.
Tork: “The TV show had ended and we were not touring as much and we defiantly were not recording as a four piece band any more, each member was recording their own tunes, so I felt it was time for me to go and do my own band “Release”

Then not even one year later Nesmith in Nov 1969 decides it is also time for his early exit, Nesmith: “I hung with it as long as I could, I had an opportunity to record my tunes. The TV show was over we had made a movie “Head” and a TV special “33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee” in ’68 then Peter left. I did the final tour in ’69. I just didn’t want to do it any more so I bought out the last year of my contract”

And then there were two…..In 1970 The Monkees were down to Micky & Davy who being veteran actors and now musicians fulfilled their Screen Gem’s contracts to the end. Dolenz: “I was an actor hired to be a singer & a drummer as long as they were paying me and putting out my records I was ok with the job.” Jones: “I know which side of my bread the butter is on”

The Monkees began touring in 1966 starting out with seven concerts at the end of the year. Then in 1967 the band embarked upon the unofficial “Summer of Love tour” performing 42 concerts across America. The band took some time off in 1968 only performing in Australia & Japan for 12 concerts and a one off show in America for the movie “Head” The final tour of 1969 saw the band as a trio for the first time. Nesmith, Dolenz & Jones had made many TV appearances on various television programs through out 1969 and played 21 concerts that same year.

The first unofficial Monkees reunion was in 1975 the “Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart Show” this new quartet toured through 1976 and released one LP and two singles during this period.
Micky and Davy continued as a duo again during 1977 & 1978 releasing oe soundtrack Lp of Harry Nilsson songs for “The Point” in 1978.

Moving forward in time Davy & Peter are touring Australia in 1985 as “The Sounds of The Monkees” when Fischoff & MTV get Dolenz to join and reform The Monkees in 1986. The trio record and tour until 1989, when the three have decided they have had enough and go their separate ways in Eureka, Mo. Sep 1989. (yes, I was there) Nesmith did make an effort to appear at one concert in Sep 1986 and film a Christmas Video for MTV with the other three. Nesmith did perform most of a concert in Sep 1989 with the trio for their “Walk of Fame” induction.

In 1996 Micky Dolenz was working on a solo CD, when he asked Nesmith to produce the music for him. Nesmith came and asked “Do you keep in touch with Peter?” Dolenz replied “Yes” Nez said “Let’s bring him in” when Peter arrived to start work on the new music Tork suggested “As long as the three of us are here why not bring in David on this too”
So they did “Justus” was released in 1997 a tour with the trio ensued, as well as the second Monkees: TV special & a made for VH-1 TV movie. The quartet including Nesmith did a brief warm up tour of the UK of nine concerts in 1997. The press was not kind to the guys, as well as Nesmith decided for the final time he did not like working with a couple members of the band.

So a few years had passed and The Monkees decide to go out for a “35th anniversary tour”
Once again the trio of Dolenz, Jones & Tork. This time Tork’s band “Shoe Suede Blues” will be the opening act. They tour throughout 2000 & 2001 for the 3rd time as a trio.

Bringing us to today………
Micky, David & Peter are now on their 4th tour as the trio and on their “45th Anniversary Tour” The Monkees will be at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley 1& 2 July 2011 at 7:30pm.
So be there or be triangular…..

“That Little Monkee Davy Jones”
(This is what my very good friend MaryLee’s son Josh said, when he was about 5 years old , when we asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up)

“BUZZ” Newspaper Article Apr- May 2012 (#14-N)
By: Rik “Dr. Rox” Schwinden aka Mr.Zer0

A Foreword by; Renee Dahring NP

I knew David as a friend for almost 25 years. As a performer he worked hard to do his best, it didn’t matter to him if the audience was in the hundreds or the thousands, he always gave 110%. . His fans knew he could be counted on to stay late, shake hands and sign autographs even when he was exhausted. He told me once “I never want to seem ungrateful”. He was that rare celebrity who believed he had a responsibility to his fans. On a personal level he was a kind and generous man and fiercely loyal to his friends. As a professional, he was a class act. On all levels he will be missed greatly.

Hello fans Mr. Zero here, welcome back to yet another round,

As you may have heard David “Davy” Jones (David Thomas Jones 30 Dec 1945 Manchester, UK) of The Monkees passed away on 29 Feb 2012. Some of you may remember I wrote an article on The Monkees last June (you can re-read this article www.MrZeros.Com in the “Blog” section) for their 2 concert appearance at the Minnesota Zoo last 1-2 July 2011. As some of you may not know I own a “Used Music Shop” Mr. Zero’s in Roseville 55113, as well as you may not realize this shop was named after a Monkees TV Episode #52 “Devil and Peter Tork” from 5 Feb 1968. Monte Landis played “Mr. Zero” (the devil) who owned a pawn shop “Mr. Zero’s”. When we opened the shop I wanted a nondescript name that did not limit what we could sell in the shop, as well as to give homage to the band that got me interested in music to begin with.

“How Did You Start”
According to my Mom The Monkees was one of the first bands & TV shows I liked as a toddler, as I grew older I never stopped liking the music of The Monkees including their off shoots ‘Boyce & Hart’. Many years later when I quit traveling the road as a musician I started working for a music store chain called ‘RecordShop’ in 1986, fortunately for me at the height of The Monkees 20th anniversary reunion tour. Over the years I saw The Monkees in one form or another about 45 times from Indiana to Arizona and all points in between. On those journeys I made some great friends and met some awesome people in my travels, many of them I am still in contact with today, after almost 23 years later, such as Ace, Tim & MaryLee, Crazy Rob, Renee, Aggie, Bill, Jen, Cindy & Bonnie and well the list goes on and on. In addition to these wonderful people I was fortunate enough to meet The Monkees, Boyce & Hart themselves and many of the other people involved in the whole Monkees project, in doing research for my book on The Monkees “Here We Come: the touring history of The Monkees”.

“I Once Did A Job For”
I first met David (he preferred to be called David actually) in Chicago Aug 1990 through photographer Michael G. Bush, I was able to get David to sign a 1966 Vox guitar (in 1966 they had an endorsement with Vox) later on I was able to get Micky, Peter & Boyce & Hart to sign this same guitar (Nez passed on signing this). In Feb 1991 David performed 2 shows down the street from where I was living in Des Moines, Iowa; I had a brief phone conversation with him one morning, and met him both nights after the shows. In March 1992 David contacted our mutual friend Cindy and asked her to ask me to fax to his hotel, some specific research I had compiled for my book. David was requesting a history of his writing and producing credits for The Monkees, as he was seeking to renegotiate his royalty deal with Rhino Records, as the original deal had been set in 1965, and it was almost 30 years later.

“You Have A Contract’
Turns out David had either written or co-written some 16 songs and produced about 22 songs when he was with The Monkees 1965- 1970. True many of his songs were not issued or used at the time, and his music may not be to everyone’s liking, however I myself really enjoy what David coined as “Broadway Rock” some of David’s best originals I feel we’re “You and I” (with Neil Young on Lead Guitar) a song about his fleeting fame a s pop star. “War Games” an anti war song aimed at the Viet Nam war. “The Poster” a tip of the hat to the Beatles “Mr. Kite” and several others like: “Dream World” “I’m Gonna Try” “Smile” and the original theme song for The Monkees movie “Head” which was originally titled “Changes”

“But, He Knows You”
I had met up with David many other times over the years, 1994-95, 96, 97, 1999 etc, one time when Renee and I were attending a Jones concert at the Wisconsin State Fair in July 2003, David invited us backstage, as we were leaving the backstage area, Renee looked at me and said “You know Rik everyone knows Davy Jones” I replied “Yea…?” and Renee followed up with “Davy Jones knows you !!!” It was there and then, I realized how far I had come from a toddler watching Jones on TV to being a major fan, and on to an acquaintance … I really felt I had arrived as a true Monkee’s fan… A couple of years later in Sep 2005 David was asked by Father Charlie to play the Church I attend St. John Neumann in Eagan, MN. It just happened so that VH-1 was filming a special on David and VH-1 covered a book signing at The Brit Pub in downtown Minneapolis. At the filming David and I began talking about various items fans had brought to get signed I was surprised he knew about 90% of what people brought to him to get signed. In between fan autographs David and I started joking around and the producers of the show asked me to sign off and do a small scene with David from the reaction of the people in attendance, apparently we were quite humorous !!! However my scene was cut, hey you can only fit so much in a 45 min segment !!!

“The Last Time”
I last spoke with David at the Minnesota Zoo last summer, and I am so glad I was able to see both shows (thanks Tina & Todd) and I am so grateful I was able to. In closing I would like to convey this message I had be in contact with David about a dozen times over the last 20 years, and of all the Pop- Rock Stars I have met, and there have been many, Jones was one of the best. He knew ‘Which side his bread was buttered on’, this something he once said about himself and his fans, and there are a couple of photos (1 in 1991 the other in 1997) of David and I joking around about this statement. He was always good to his fans and grateful for his fame. He will be missed by many.

“What Else Did He Do”
As a life long fan it has always bothered me when people would say or ask “What has Davy done lately ?” The rest of this article will cover some of the many things David did over the years when we was not a Monkee. I am here to tell you, Jones was always working, whether it be music, musicals or acting he was always out there performing. He once said “My passport says ‘Entertainer” When he wasn’t with The Monkees, Jones performed many “Solo Tours” here are some of the years he was out on the road touring solo:

Solo Tours: 1971, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006

I realize this particular article has been a bit self indulgent, my apologies, however I have followed and listened to and made this band a part of my life for more than 40 years. As a kid in Sioux City all I wanted was to have a pop band, with 3 close friends and make some fun music like The Monkees did… in many ways, that dream came true… Thank you, David, Micky, Peter, Michael, Tommy & Bobby.

Michael Nesmith: “I Am Not That”

“BUZZ” Newspaper Article: Mar- Apr 2013 (#24-X)
Now here’s a guy who truly has done it all ! I am going to try to dis-spell all the misinformation surrounding Nesmith, however there is a lot to cover …

> A Journey With Michael Blessing < Papa Nez was born Robert Michael Nesmith: 30 Dec 1942 in Houston, Texas to Bette (Betty Clair McMurray /Nesmith- Graham 23 Mar 1924 –12 May 1980) & Warren A Nesmith (1919–1984). Warren & Bette were married in 1942 & Divorced in 1946. Michael was an only child raised in Dallas/ Ft. Worth. Bette created "Paint Out" in 1955 renamed "Liquid Paper” in 1958 (NOT: "White Out")& then sold the rights to Gillette in 1979 for $47 million (Nez inherited half of this amount in 1980). Mike started writing poetry about age 15. Nez enlisted into the US Air-force in 1960 & received his G.E.D. while enlisted, he was a mechanic and has said "I was kicked out of the Air-Force (in 1962), cuz I flipped over a general's plane". Mike enrolled in San Antonio Collage in 1962, he also began playing guitar around age 19 to regain dexterity in his hand after a firecracker accident, in collage Mike meet his long time bassist John London (John Carl Kuehne 6Feb1942 –12Feb2000) and Nez's 1st wife Phyllis Ann Barbour (married Jun'64, they had 3 children together: Christian DuVal: 31Jan1965, Jonathan: 4Feb1968 & Jessica Buffler: 10Sep1970 & then divorced in Mar'75) > Don’t Call On Me < Nez was part of the "New Christy Minstrels" & wrote songs recorded by other artists such as: Linda Ronstadt, Frankie Laine, Paul Butterfield & Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Nez himself became a recording artist in early 1963 when he released his 1st 45 Single "Wanderin b/w Well Well" on Highness Records & later that year "How Can You Kiss Me b/w Just A Little Love" on Omnibus. In 1965 Nez changed his performing name to Michael Blessing, then auditioned for and got the part on the TV Show "The Monkees" & signed with Colpix Records (same label as Davy Jones) & released "The New Recruit b/w Journey With" In Oct, then in Jan 1966 Nez release his 4th 45 Single (before The Monkees 1st record was released in Aug 1966) "Until It's Time For You To Go b/w What Seems To Be The Trouble Officer" however a 5th single was re-issued to capitalize on Nesmith's Monkees' fame "Just A Little Love b/w Curson Terr" on Edan Records in 1966. Nesmith was hired for "The Monkees" project with a 7 year contract from 1965- 1972, he wrote some 46 songs for The Monkees project & was on 8 albums & 11 singles, 58 TV episodes, 1 feature film & 1 TV Special. Nez recorded his 1st Solo Album in Jul 1968 "Wichita Train Whistle Sings" Nez also had an affair with Nurit Wilde (born in Israel) & gave birth to Nesmith's 3rd son Jason Nesmith in 7Aug1968. Nesmith announced he was leaving The Monkees in Nov 1969 but did full fill some commercial work in 1970 as a Monkee. Papa Nez formed the "First National Band" in early 1970 with John London, Red Rhodes (Orville J. 30 Dec 1930 in Alton, IL. - 20 Aug 1995) & John Ware on drums from "The Stone Poneys" & then released 6 LPs on RCA, the 1st being "Magnetic South" Jul 1970 & 2 Singles the 1st has a Non-LP flipside "Rose City Chimes" the 2nd is the #21 Hit "Joanne" in Aug70. His 2nd album "Loose Salute” was in Nov 1970 with the #42 Hit "Silver Moon" in Jan71. > The Crippled Lion < The 'First National Band' toured throughout 1970 I own, the only known to exist, tour poster, for the concert; Fri 20 Nov 1970 Des Moines, Iowa @ KRNT Theatre, (this poster is featured in the book "Total Control" on Page #138, (it was to be used in a "Nesmith CD Boxset" on Rio Records in 1994). Dick Youngs was the MC for this show & told me this about the concert "Nesmith was riding on the hit Joanne, & Silver moon was just out, yet only about 200 people showed up for the show, so at the beginning of the show Nesmith asked everyone to move forward to the front closer to the stage" John Ware had this to say, "The end of the band came in late '70 in Des Moines I think, there was a huge argument within in the band & John (London) & I quit". Then in May 1971 the band release a 3rd LP "Nevada Fighter" with the minor charting hit "Nevada Fighter" 2 other singles were released from this album. Of this trio of LPs 10 songs were hold over’s from Nesmith's Monkees stint, also if you play side #2 of all 3 LPs in a row, this comprises a musical tale of the old west. Nesmith releases a 4th album as "The 2nd National Band" the LP is"Tantamount To Treason" in Feb'72 with the hardrock "Mama Rocker" as a 45, Nez performs in Phoenix 12-15 Apr '72 . At this time RCA asks Nesmith "When are you going to deliver another hit like 'Joanne'?" so Nez releases "And The Hits Just Keep A Coming" Aug'72 a single is released but again not a hit. > I’ve Never Loved Anyone More < It is about this time Nez's 1st marriage ends & Long time friend Bill Martin creates a film in 1972 "Northville Cemetary Massacre" (but released in 1976, a budget VHS was released under a different title) Nesmith was asked to write the score for free! Nez releases his final LP for RCA "Pretty Much Your Stand Ranch Stash" in Oct'73, with 1 single. Of the last 3 LPs 5 songs are Monkees hold over’s. Nez also produced & wrote with other artists like: Iain Matthews, Bert Jansch & Linda Hargrove , when Electra Records gave Nez an off shoot label titled Countryside (the label was an photo of an Orange, the fruit, like the Beatles Apple), but was shut down about 1 ½ years later. Nez did not tour a lot but he did play shows from time to time here is the setlist to a Rare Live CD: 28 April 1974 in London @ The Roundhouse Joanne Some Of Shelly's Blues Silver Moon Different Drum Propinquity The Grand Ennui Wax Minute Tomorrow And Me The Upside Of Goodbye Roll With The Flow Marie's Theme > Dance Between The Raindrops < Then the changes really kick in, Nez opens his own record label "Pacific Arts" Oct'74 then releases "The Prison" boxset a record with a book in late 1974 & then re-releases it in Mar'75. Pacific Arts released many LPs of relativity unknown artists. Nesmith did do an unusual show of live music of "The Prison" with a ballet performing on the main stage with him off to the side reading the book and playing music. Nez marries for a 2nd time to Kathryn Bild in Feb 1976 (until Aug 1988). In Mar 1977 Nez put out "From A Radio Engine To The Photon Wing" with Thee 1st Official Video Single "Rio" though it did not score high on the charts it became a huge TV hit as Nesmith created the show “PopClips" . Nez & band did do a brief tour in 1977, then released his 1st 'Live Album' "Live At The Palais" in Aug'78 (the commercial for the LP is hysterical). In May 1979 Nez released "Infinite Rider On The Big Dogma" with 2 singles both having videos to match "Magic" & the minor hit"Crusin" again because of "PopClips" which ran on the "Nickleodeon" channel from late 1980 to early 1981 for 1 season of 30 min. episodes when the show was purchased by Warner Cable & turned the idea into MTV (Des Moines was #9 of the 10 test markets). One of Nesmith's final live performances was in Oct 1979 @ Compton Terrace in Phoenix, AZ. (I have this show on tape). > Capsule < Staring in 1980 Nez went on a promotional tour announcing "The audio only record is dead, moving forward there will only be VideoMusic" in keeping with this statement Nez turned towards VHS & Film releases in 1981 "Elephant Parts" a comedy segment video for which Nez won the 1st ever "Video Grammy" in 1982 the film "Time Rider" in 1984 the film "Repo Man" In Mar '85 the TV Special "Television Parts" leading to the short lived TV Series (9 episodes) "Television Parts" in Jun '85 when I interviewed Jerry Seinfeld (in MPLS Sep 2001) I asked him about his memories of appearing on "Television Parts" he replied "I remember it very well & very fondly, it was the 1st time I was on prime time TV, I played the 'Sock Detective' how do you know about that?" then in 1986 the VHS "Dr. Duck's Super-Secret All-Purpose Sauce" (a part #2 of 'Television Parts") in Feb 1987 the film "Square Dance" then in Mar 1987 "Burglar" followed by the film "Tapeheads" in 1988, Nez sent out a 'promo only VHS' to promote the film. > Total Control < In the late 80's Nez met his 3rd wife Victoria Kennedy (who he married in Apr 2000 & divorced in 2011) also in the late 80s Nez starts releasing Audio Albums with "Newer Stuff" in 1989 followed by "Older Stuff" in 1991 Nez goes out & performs for the 1st time in over 10 years in 1991 in Jacksonville, OR. @ Britt Festival, Nez records & releases "Live @ The Britt" on VHS (in 1999 the CD comes out) & to everyone's surprise releases "Tropical Campfires" in Jul'92, & then does a short tour. I was able to see Nez for the 1st time on Tour 15 Feb 1992 Chicago @ Cubby Bear. The beginning of the next year Jan'93 Nez is broadcast on "Austin City Limits" (from a 1992 performance). With a renewed interest in writing & recording Nez opens "Rio Records" 1994 & releases "The Garden" (the follow up to 'The Prison' 1974) & begins to re-release his earlier catalog on CD on the Awarness label, & begins pre-production on a 4 CD boxset, of which I was supplying some material for the accompanying booklet, about the same time the 'stuff hits the fan' Nesmith's Pacific Arts Co. has had a distribution deal with PBS since 1990, over time, with neither party happy with the other, several lawsuits were filed & in 1994 the suit, shuts down operations of Pacific Arts & in 1995 the law suit shut down his newly opened ‘Rio Records' however in Feb 1999 Nez & Co. were awarded $48 million in damages. > Dynaflow < In 1997 Nesmith returned to The Monkees for a new studio LP "Justus" a TV Special "Hey, Hey, It's The Monkees" & UK Tour. In early 2000 Nez launched www.VideoRanch3d.com selling his products & "on-Line" performances. Nez finally released a new CD "Rays" in 2006.Papa Nez being a prolific writer released his 1st novel "The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora" in 1998 followed by in 2009 his 2nd "The America Gene" 2009. Nesmith, Dolenz & Tork toured the US last year. Nez went out solo last year and is on tour now. *Michael Nesmith of The MONKEES; will be performing Fri 5 April 2013 at the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul his 2nd Solo tour in 21 years. I have been getting this question asked a lot "Will Nez be performing a lot of MONKEES songs" the answer ”Sorry No, "Papa Gene's Blues" & “Tapioca Tundra" however he does perform many songs he recorded 1st under the MONKEES name & can be found on "Missing Links1- 3" but did not release until his 1st few RCA solo LPs like "Some Of Shelly's Blues" & "Propinquity" I remember seeing Nez on TV in 1979 for a "Where are they now" segment & my Dad said "What has he really done outside of The Monkees”, with all due respect Dad... Michael Nesmith, well he did it all. In Nov 2013 My very Good Friends Rose, Anite & Fil were able to our copy of "(meet) The Monkees 1966 "Papa J" Cover autographed by Nez to the Shop ... my life is not complete. Until the next time.... The MONKEES: 2012
Nesmith, Dolenz & Tork:

in MPLS. MN.

“BUZZ” Newspaper Article” Dec- Jan 2013 (#21-U)
(By: Mr.ZERo)

First of all this combination has never toured together before. The 2012 Trio performed just 12 dates from, 8 Nov in Escondido, CA. to 2 Dec in NYC. The Original 4 toured together from 1966 to 1968 and then again in 1997, they did perform 1 concert in 1989 for the Hollywood “Walk of Fame”. The trio of Nesmith, Dolenz & Jones toured in 1969. And in 1986 Jones, Dolenz & Tork toured as The Monkees from 1986 to 1989, then again 1996 & 1997 and again in 2000 & 2001 and finally in 2010. These statistics, and much, much more can be found in my book (not yet published) “The Monkees: Complete Touring History” or you can go to this website and get Tons of info; http://www.monkeesconcerts.com this guy did a great job.
When I arrived I knew about 1 out of every 3 people in the venue, I guess that will happen when you’ve followed a band since 1966 and seen them live somewhere around 45 times in 9 different states since 1986. Unfortunately the vocals were buried in the mix, just like last year when the other Trio played the MN. ZOO, on the 1st night. So it was hard to tell what the guys actually sounded like, except Micky I could hear him fine. I am told the vocals were fine depending on where you sat in the venue.
It was cool to see Nez, (only the 2nd time I have seen him live) when he walked out, it brought the house down, it was Very Apparent, 2/3 of the people were there to see Papa Nez, in his shiny loafers. (it seems most people do not realize Nez came into $48 million twice in his life in 1980 when his Mother Bette died and left her “Liquid Paper” fortune to Nez and then in 1999 Nez won a lawsuit against PBS, so he’s not really doing it for the money, although he did get divorced last year) Peter was Peter and did a fine job, playing Guitar & Banjo & 5 String Bass & Keyboards & Lead Vocals on 5 songs. My friend Jennifer said “Someone put a quarter in Tork for “Your Auntie Grizelda” as he came to life during this number. One thing, I personally saw Tork looking for cameras in the audience, maybe a little too much (focus on the show Peter). The backing band had long time “Monkees” Associates: David Alexander, Aviva Maloney & Wayne Avers & this time, Nesmith’s son Christian on Guitar, and Micky’s sister CoCo on backing vocals.
Micky did a great job as a front man (working harder to fill in for a missing Jones) also playing percussion, Guitar & Drums and wearing a ‘Tablecloth’ for “Randy Scouse Git”,very cool, Dolenz sang lead on 11 songs. Nez, was reading off a “I pad” I felt he only played about 3/4 of the songs, playing a Blonde 12 String Gretsch,( I doubt it was his same one from the 60 s as I heard that one was stolen from a guitar repair shop in Nashville in the 60s) & a Black Strat for “Pleasant Valley Sunday” & Keyboards during “For Pete’s Sake” Nez sang lead on 10 songs. And Nez performed the “Moog” on “Daily Nightly” a sight, you had to see to believe, hysterical !!! After the song Tork asked “How do you warm up for that?” Nez “Very slowly” Tork “He stole that joke”
It was really cool to finally see the 3 live, but when it was only the 3 on stage during 3 songs from “Headquarters” it really set in the fact the David is gone … and they waited all this time to do this … so the 2 video tributes to David were a nice touch. However, The Trio really did seem to lack a comradery between them, not much interaction between them, missing was the “one ups man ship” between Jones & Dolenz. However, it was a dream come true to watch Mike sing lead & play 12 string, with Micky on drums & Peter on bass for “You Told Me” “Sunny Girlfriend” “You Just May Be The One“ & “Mary Mary” what a time warp, to actually see this live, even though the guys are in their late 60s.
There was a video screen behind the guys, (they actually pioneered this in 1967) showing some really rare video clips some I had never seen before, and I have seen a lot over the last 25 years, including a trailer for the new “Boyce & Hart” documentary, “Candy Store Profits” due out next year. They also played some rare music before and after the concert, the most unusual track I heard was a Spanish Version of “Hard To Believe” a Jones track from “Pisces”. The Merch booth was CRAZY they $old Out Of Almost Everything!! After the show we saw Coco Dolenz outside by the bus, and Tork walking into the Hotel they were staying in. It was cool to see Christian Nesmith live, I saw my long time friend Karen & her friend Keyboardist David Alexander took our picture (& his too), I met Andrew Sandoval in person after all these years, also very cool, Sandoval is recording all 12 shows for a DVD next month.
The stand out songs for me were “You Told Me” “Early Morning Blues & Greens” “Do I Have To Do This All Over Again” “Sweet Young Thing” & “Tapioca Tundra” and My little friend Rose, got to sing “Daydream Believer” with the Trio, awesome. I personally would have loved to see them perform “Salesman” “Love Is Only Sleeping” “Tear The Top Off” “Nine Times Blue” or “You’re So Good” but alas my friend Doc tells me “Rik, You’re the only one who wants to hear that stuff?” So I give you the Set List for the night’s Concert. Apparently a lot of the concert can be found on “YouTube”

It was Great to see them and I had a Great Time and I loved it overall !!! I personally feel the coolest thing is all the Wonderful People I have met over the last 26 years because of a TV Show in the 60s that put out some Records and became a Band.
Thanks to Curt & Lori for filming me 20 years ago at Adventureland. I’d like to thank Andy for the Ticket, and Rob & Tom & Billy for hanging out, we tried in vain to get some autographs, especially from Nez, as we have the 1st LP a “J” (Papa Jean’s Blues) cover signed to the Shop (Mr. Zero’s we took the name from the Monkees episode #52 from 5 Feb 1968), by Jones, Tork & Dolenz, however Nez’s son Christian informed us, “My Dad won’t sign things, because he hates Ebay”, and so do the other 2 we found out, waiting around for 2 hours or more, to no avail (thank you Ebay Dealers for ruining it for everyone, everywhere in the universe) . In closing, I would say a wonderful time was had by all.

“When Jesus Met Zero”

How the local band ‘Jesus Chrysler’ helped spawn the band ‘MrZERo’
“BUZZ: Newspaper Article” Jul- Aug 2013 (#29-jC)

> Riff One < I first met Bakko the Lead Singer & Guitar Player of 'JESUS CHRYSLER’ (They are a local band essentially from St. Paul), through my Co-Worker (Mr. Zero's) Crazy Rob sometime in spring 2010. Bakko & I hit it off, straight away both of us being huge KISS fans, I told him about a book I was involved with on KISS "Alive Forever" & he told me about the local band he was in. Bakko: "I was Born in Minneapolis, 1970, I mainly grew up in Owatanna, I founded the band in 1998 with our original drummer Shaggz, before JC, we were called 'Bloody Bedsheets' oddly enough my Mom thought “What was wrong with that name”. I play on all 5 of the CD's we have out so far. I've had at minimum at least a hand in writing every song. I like playing "Dashboard Jesus" and "Love Is A Lie". I don't really enjoy playing any particular cover. Duffy took over for Shaggz about 2004, Duffy had played with 'Treble’ in another band" "Jesus Chrysler" much like our childhood heroes KISS not only had out 4 CDs (at that time) "Ride" 2001 "Intake" 2001 "BurnOut" 2002, our mutual friend Glenn Bogan of the local band "Attica" produced the 1st 3 CDs for them, there is a music video for "Airbourne" released in 2006, followed by the CD "IV: Backfire" 2009 & finally "Make Bold Statements" 2012 to list them all, but the band also put out, trading cards, personalized guitar picks, coffee mugs, stickers, posters, matchbooks, buttons, t-shirts. etc. the only other local band I had seen do anything like this was "FLIP" who was even managed by former KISS manager Bill Aucoin, some years back. Brynn Arens (FLIP), is currently in "The ODDFATHERS" who recently worked with Eddie Kramer on their upcoming CD. > Given Away < Bakko invited me to his birthday party in Oct 2010, there I met the rest of the band, I 1st met the bass player ‘Knuckles’ me being of Polish decent he & I became fast friends. Knuckles: (Mirek Aleksandrowicz) "I was born in Katowice, Poland on 27 Sep 1972, biooootch!!! I joined the band by a drunken fluke & being co-workers with Bakko sometime about Sept-Oct '98. I played on; "Ride", "Intake" and the new one "Make Bold Statements". For the CDs I wrote; "Behind", "Given Away" & I collaborated on a number of other songs. My favorite original has to be "Route 666" & my favorite cover we did was Sex Pistols: "Holidays in the Sun" While socializing at the birthday party, I met the drummer 'Duffy' (Craig Duffy 14 Jan 1973 Mound, MN.) Duffy really didn't have a lot to say, but he sure know some very technical details about some songs we were about to perform that night. Bakko handed me a Tobacco Sunburst Gibson Les Paul and said "Here we're gonna jam in a few minutes, we're tuned to Eb, are there any songs you feel comfortable doing right away?" I responded with "Yea, 'Deuce' 'Cold Gin’ & 'Love Gun" I was then introduced to 'Treble' the lead guitarist of the band, I didn't quite know what to make of him at first, as he was walking around in a powder blue polyester leisure suit, & always seemed to be holding a beer in his left hand. Treble: (Marty Lang) “I was born in small town in Ontario, Canada in 1977. How I came to join the band, well, my band 'Distant Relatives of God' parted ways during the summer of 2003 for various reasons, but prior to that we had played a handful of shows with 'Jesus Chrysler'. During those shows Bakko and I talked a few times and exchanged phone numbers, at some point they needed a new lead guitar player and when Bakko heard that I was potentially available he called me up. I learned all of the songs off of their most current album at that time (Burn Out) before showing up to the audition, it was fun to show up and be able to say, "Yeah, let’s play any song you want, I know them all". I have played on 3 CDs so far "Backfire" the newest one "Make Bold Statements" & the unreleased "Deny it All Later". Bakko and I wrote almost everything for 'Make Bold Statements / Deny it All Later' together. My favorite original song to play right now is “Third Ring of Hell”, it's cool because Bakko and I both have cool vocal parts and rhythmic leads guitar parts. "War Pigs" is a fun song to cover; I really like the structure of the song, Black Sabbath rules. > Had To Be There < Well we all plugged in, with me on Rhythm Guitar & jammed away, I remember thinking "This lead guy is really good, I'd love to be in a band with this kind of player". We played for about 30- 45 minutes; it felt good, as I had not played with people in many years. My good friend Chris Watous of the Des Moines Band "Seven Hells" had been hounding me for years to join their band, in spring 2009 I had agreed to do the encore of a show in Baxter, Iowa, with ‘Seven Hells’ then again in July in Des Moines. I was so intrigued with the idea of playing again I asked to jam with 'Jesus Chrysler' again in Jan 2011. I had seen a video Bakko had done as a spoof of a sports celebrity & thought it was comic genius; I told him that I thought so. In Feb 2011 Bakko came to me with an idea & a script to do a video short for Mr. Zero's, he didn't give me any details, but I loved his last video, so I was in. The story is the owner of Mr. Zero's becomes the manager of the band only exploits them as free labor. As I had been involved with a local film "Attack of the Moon Zombies" (2011) a few months earlier, so I still had the acting bug so I was ready to do my part. The band (JC) recorded "Not Your Steppinstone" by The MONKEES for this video, as the Shop Mr. Zero's is named after a MONKEES TV episode (#52 "Devil & Peter Tork" Feb 1968). While filming this video I learned their long time bass player Knuckles was leaving the band, I quickly inquired about auditioning for the open position. I was informed "Naw, you're too old and you hair's too long" Christian Howard Shores: "I was born in Rochester Mn. & lived in Owatonna. That's where I graduated from high school and know Bakko from. We weren't very good friends only by friend association which is weird. I moved to Vegas when I was 21 and lived there for 13 years working mostly as a Chef at the Bellagio Hotel. I played in an original band & we recorded a CD, the band's name was "Haddenfield" (named in honor of the movie Halloween) we just changed spelling a little, it was the town that Michael terrorized. We played several gigs around Vegas... even opened up for Winger once. I got in touch with Bakko thru "fb" & he got invited to my surprise 40th Bday party after not seein’ him in 22years I joined the band in fall of 2011. I just played on a few songs on new CD, & redid some bass lines in my style. We are currently putting new material together for new CD, that I will play on whole thing and be a major contributor. My favorite new song is "Stankbutt", my favorite song on "Make Bold Statements" is "Oh Devil" ... the rest is history” > Get Up & Get Your Grandma Outta Here < So this is about the time I started thinking about putting my own band together. In Feb 2011 I met a country singer Colene Walters a "Patsy Cline" impersonator from Nashville, I began working with her until Sep 2011 when we parted ways. When in Sep 2011 'JESUS CHRYSLER' asked me to play Lead Guitar & Sing Lead & Backup on a promotional video they were working on for the song "Born To Raise Hell" a Motorhead cover. I had such a great time I wanted to do more. Then in Mar 2012 Bakko wrote & produced a Theme Song for "Mr. Zero's" which we used in our 3rd Anniversary Commercial later that spring. I met Mitch (Guitar & Keyboards) here at the Shop (Mr. Zero's 1744 Lexington Ave. N. Roseville, MN. 55113) in 2009 soon after we 1st opened. Rakehell: (Mitch Anderson: 1966 Feb Minneapolis) "When I was 15 I was at a house party when I 1st heard "Iron Man" by BLACK SABBATH, it changed my life. I soon asked my Mom if I could take guitar lessons. As far as my influences, I would have to say it starts & ends with Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, although I must acknowledge Dave Mustaine when he was with 'Metallica' & (early) 'Megadeth', although I am not a big fan of his now, oh & Barry Thompson & Gavin Ward of 'Bolt Thrower' as far as my influences there was also 'Judas Priest' & 'Iron Maiden' my favorite cover songs; "Into The Void" by Black Sabbath, "The Conjuring" by Megadeth & "For Victory" by Bolt Thrower.” “The only other actual band that I've been in is one that I started in high school with a couple of friends, which had several incarnations over the years. We called ourselves 'The Psychotic Embryos' & the last time we played together was probably 1993. We were a 50/50 band that did half covers and half originals, we did write some pretty cool songs, some of which I still remember how to play!" Through Mitch, I met the Drummer & Vocalist Dave in early 2010, both from St.Paul, he was in a band at the time called ‘Party Army’. Nailer: (Dave Columbus: 5 Jan 1964 St. Paul, Mn.) "When I was about 6 or 7 my brother would let me play his drums, but I didn't get serious about it until I was 14 or 15 when I got my first drum set. The bands I listened to early on were 'YES', 'RUSH' & 'Kansas'. I can't really say I have 3 favorite songs, there are so many I could name from a wide variety of bands, but I’ll stay with the 3 groups that I listed. "Roundabout", "Spirit of Radio", and "Dust in the Wind". The bands that mean the most to me that I've played in are 'Spirits Of Adventure', & the first band I played in. I still once in awhile get together and jam with them. Another is 'Show Me Yours', which is the most talented band I played in, & of course ’Rock Brigade', which is one of the bands I currently play in." > Let The Winter Sunshine On < I then met the 2nd Guitarist & Backing Vocals; Zach of Brooklyn Center through his wife in mid 2010, once again here at the shop. Gunslinger: (Zachary Plese: 197x Minneapolis,MN. @ North Memorial) “I got my 1st guitar around age 14, but I didn't start seriously playing till I was 18, my best friend got me into it, he was murdered sometime later. My main influences were Edward Van Halen, Tom Scholz: Boston & Steve Perry: Journey. My favorite songs would be "Love Will Find A Way" YES, "Peace Of Mind" Boston & "Dance the Night Away" Van Halen, although for some time now I have been into Alan Holdsworth, seriously anything by Holdsworth, it's my dream to play like him.” Drummer Dave continued to ask me to sit in with him, after a year & half of hounding me, (I had realistically stopped playing in 1989) I agreed to jam with these guys, 1st Zach in 2011 then Mitch in 2012 and eventually all 4 of us in Jan 2013. At 1st I was the Lead Vocalist & Guitar Player, but when we realized Mitch & Zach were levels ahead of me, I agreed to go back to playing Bass which I played in 2 or 3 different bands in the mid to late 80s. > Don’t Let Your Mind Post Toastee < Dr. Rox (R. L. Schwinden: 29 May 196? Sioux City, Iowa home of Tommy Bolin) “I was interested in music at an early age, my Aunt Debby used to play Dave Clark 5 records for me & I used to watch the MONKEES TV show (to hear the music) my Dad was a sub-drummer for ‘The Trashmen' back in the day, he wanted me to play drums but I could not keep a beat, so my Uncle Jeff gave me a guitar at age 8. I got my 1st real guitar at 16, my friends Mike Langley & Brett Rodgers taught me how to play, I was in a few bands, 'Magic Acid Band' 'Palace Guard' 'Black Diamond' currently I use a 1968 Gibson EB-O (modified) & a 1972 SG Deluxe (refinished). My main influences: The MONKEES, Black Sabbath, KISS & Tommy Bolin.” It was Drummer Dave's suggestion to call the band "MrZERo" since this is where the band came together. My friend Peggy Sorrell & I created the Band's Logo/CD Cover, she started in 2011 and I finalized in 2013. My friend Lily graces the poster art we use. We're currently performing covers: KISS, Black Sabbath, RATT, Twisted Sister, Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Night Ranger, David Bowie & Three Doors Down. In spring 2013 "MrZERo" approached "JESUS CHRYSLER" about performing on a double bill as they have just released their 4th CD "Make Bold Statements" however it was Treble of: JC who secured MrZERo to play with "JESUS CHRYSLER" @ The Red Sea in Jun 2013. And so now you know … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6igSCQYGH8 By: Dr. Rox (RLSchwinden) c/o Mr. Zero’s: Pop Culture Heaven 1744 Lexington Ave. N. Roseville, MN. 55113 www.MrZeros.Com *Est. 2009

KISS: “Hotter Than Hell” 1974

“BUZZ” Newspaper Article March 2012 (12- L)
By: MrZero; R.L.Schwinden

How ya doin’ St. Cloud !!!

As some of you may not know I was a member of the staff that wrote the book “KISS: Alive Forever”. Put out on Billboard Books in 2002 with the ISBN # 0-8230-8322-5. I had 27 entries and conducted some 8 hours of interviews. I was recently asked then why is it, I have not yet done an article on one of my favorite bands? My response: “There is too much to cover in a 3 page article. So in an attempt to satisfy the fans, I narrowed the focus down to my favorite period of KISS 1974- 75. When I was in Grade School in Jackson, MS. my buddy Greg A. gave me “Hotter Than Hell” for my birthday and I was never the same again, I had found what I had been looking for all my life, And away we go….

“The Birth”

KISS was born from the ashes of the ‘Epic Label’ band “Wicked Lester” in Dec 1972. Gene $immon$ (Chaim Weitz: 25Aug1949; Haifa, Israel, then Eugene Klein NYC) on Bass & Vocals, Paul Stanley (Stanley Bert Eisen: 20Jan1952; Queens NYC) on Vocals & Guitar, Peter Criss (George Peter John Criscuola: 20Dec1946; Brooklyn, NYC) on Drums & Vocals & Ace Frehley (Paul Daniel Frehley: 27Apr1951; Bronx, NYC) on Lead Guitar & Vocals. The band recorded a 5 song demo tape on 13 Mar 1973 the tape contained: Deuce, Cold Gin, Strutter, Watchin You & Black Diamond. I was able to interview Gene in Jun 1990, in Des Moines, IA. I was told “Black Diamond” was started by Gene inspired by a brand name of guitar strings & or a brand of bowling ball, but finished up by Paul for someone he knew in NYC, Paul confirmed to me, in an interview I conducted with him in Oct 1990, in Sioux City, Iowa. KISS recorded their 1st LP “KISS” from Oct- Nov 1973 at Bell Sound Studios in NYC. It was released on Casablanca/ WB Records NB-9001 on 18 Feb 1973. The 1st version contained only 9 songs “Kissin Time” was recorded later on in April 1973 for a 45 Single then later added to new pressings of the LP.

“Bring on the Heat”

KISS relocated to LA in Aug- Sep 1974 to work with, for the 2nd time, producers Kenny Kerner and Richie Wise. The band being from NYC did not like the surroundings of west coast California. The band lived out of hotel rooms with Gene & Peter starting off as roommates because Gene said “Peter and I were a lot alike, in the fact we were both like giant little kids, we both loved treats like Twinkies, Hostess Cupcakes etc. we used throw all our treats in a pile on the bed and then divvy them up equally” until one day Paul was frustrated & went to Gene and asked Gene to please switch Ace for Peter as a roommate. On this same trip to LA Paul’s Custom Schecter ’72 “Flying V” with the lower fin being longer than the top fin (like Albert Lee’s) was stolen on the 2nd day of recording. This same guitar (I own the leather strap that came with it) was later traded to a friend of mine Kenny of the band “Patriot” sometime later in 1975 in Mynott, ND. for the ’74 black Gibson reversed Firebird Paul uses on the cover of “Alive”. It originally had a tobacco finish before Paul had his father’s company paint it black. Also on this visit Paul received his now famous “Rose” tattoo from legendary tattoo artist Lyle Tuttle. (this tattoo is rumored to have a copyright)

“Rock N Roll Ball”

Staying on the west coast was not going well for the band. Ace was in a car accident on 23 Aug 1974 which caused a problem when it came to photograph the front cover. Ace received a cut just over his right eye, preventing him from applying his entire face makeup. To compensate, the right side of his face was superimposed and airbrushed in. The costumes on the front cover were worn from roughly May 1974 to Jun 1975. In an interview I did with Ace in Apr 1990 in Phoenix, Ace told me “I still have my first two ‘Leathers’ (1974-75 Costumes) and the Marshall amps I used on that tour” On the back cover the photos of Gene, Peter & Ace are shown with them wearing costumes that as far as I know were only worn on that one occasion, specifically for the Norman Seeff photo shoot party. Interestingly Peter’s wife Lydia Criss was in attendance but Ace’s girlfriend Janette was not. The party got so wild and Paul got so drunk someone decided it was a good idea to lock Paul into his own rental car; the rumor is it took him half an hour to get himself out.

“Hotter Than Hell” NBLP-7006 (LP, 8Track, Cassette &CD)

Was released 22 Oct 1974 for me this is the most band cohesive album they ever did as the songs were written or co-written by 3 of the 4 members. As well as the last album where all 4 members played their own instruments on every track (the only other LP after this to have all 4 play on every track was “Rock N Roll Over” in 1976). The original title of the LP was “The Harder They Come” recorded at the ‘Village Recorder’ in LA. I interviewed Peter in Dec 1993 in Chicago; he informed me “Hotter Than Hell” was his favorite KISS LP and that in fact his correct birth year was 1945.

I am going to review the 8-Track release of the LP as it is very rare and is not in the same running order as the LP release. The 8-Track catalog number is # CABF-87006 & the track listing runs in this order:

  1. 1. “Hotter Than Hell” Paul’s tip of the hat to ‘FREE’s’ “Alight Now” apparently 1 of Paul’s favorite songs and one of the few covers songs he would play with any regularity.
  2. “Let Me Go Rock N Roll” Originally titled “Baby Let Me Go” Paul wrote the chord structure first and Gene wrote the melody & Lyrics later on.

3.”Comin Home” Paul told me in Dec 82 “Even though it’s credited to both of us (Paul and Ace), I wrote the whole song. When I brought it into the studio, Ace wrote a few chords for the bridge & ending”

4.”Parasite” Written by Ace and sung by Gene. When I asked Paul about this one he said “It’s a great song, but by ’76 we had so many other great songs, something had to go from the set.” When they played this live they added an extra chorus to the end of the song.

5.”All The Way” Originally titled “Talkin Louder”. Another Gene song written before he was in KISS, perhaps from his days with the “Long Island Sounds” or “Bullfrog Beer”

  1. “Goin Blind” Originally titled “Little Lady” written with Steven Coronel before Gene, Paul & Steven were in “Wicked Lester” Gene & Coronel also wrote “She” about the same time.
  2. “Watchin You” Gene used parts from 2 songs he liked by ‘Jeff Beck’ & ‘Mountain’ as inspiration for this song which was also written well before KISS.
  3. “Strange Ways” Written when Ace was in ‘Milemo’ in the early 70′s so the rumor goes. Sung by Peter the original version contained a several minute drum solo from Peter, cut out before the LP was released. Ace once said “I regret not singing lead on that one. The effect in the solo is the harmonic on the string from my thumb holding the pick” from my Apr90 interview.

9.”Got To Choose” Paul reworked an R&B song “99 & 1/2 (Won’t Do)” by Wilson Pickett. This is hands down my favorite KISS song.

  1. “Mainline” Rumored to have been played live in concert 28Nov 1974 in Charlotte, NC. There’s a rumor about this song, being written by Paul about Peter’s dabbling with heroin.

One 45 Single was released for this LP “Let Me Go Rock N Roll” b/w “Hotter Than Hell” the song failed to chart.

“Back on the Road”

The tour for this LP started in Oct 1974 to Feb 1975, the band played 53 concerts on this tour with other bands such as: Black Oak Arkansas (personal friends of mine), RUSH, Wishbone Ash, Jo Jo Gunne, Foghat, REO Speedwagon & James Gang (with Tommy Bolin), Trapeze, T.Rex & UFO. A TV commercial was created to promote the LP & Tour using song snippets from the LP. When I interviewed Paul in Dec 1982, I asked him about this time period. He said “I have the ’74 Gibson ‘Midnight Special’ in storage in our warehouse in NY, it’s actually white with sparkles in the finish, there were only about 25 made, as prototypes”. There are only 3 known recordings from this tour. One concert from 31 Jan 1975 was filmed in B/W in San Francisco, CA. at the Winterland Ballroom another concert was captured on Cassette from 18 Oct 1974 Hammond, IN. Here are the set lists as follows. Note: “She” would not yet be released until Mar 1975.
