Ok fans, as you may have heard David Jones just passed away on 29 Feb 2012 of a fatal heart attack.
In tribute to David I am reviewing “Head”

The Opening;
I met David many times from 1990 to 2011, and in the 90s David asked me to do a research project for David on his music he wrote & produced for “The Monkees” and so I became an acquaintance of his. I was reminded of this when I was at Concert of his in Wisconsin, Jul 2003. I was with my friend ‘Doc’ when she was talking to David, then David looked at me and said “Hey, man how have you been? I haven’t seen you in a while…” I responded “Well that’s because you haven’t been around in awhile” David asked “So how’ve you been ? You two wanna come backstage” we answered “Sure” as we were walking back Doc said to me “You know everybody in the world knows who David is, but David Knows Who You Are !!!” I joked with David more than once I appreciated him because “He knew which side his bread was buttered on” meaning he was good to his fans because he knew they paid the bills !!!

So let the journey begin;
First of all the film was originally titled “Changes” and a Theme song of the same name was written by David Jones and recorded by the Monkees in 1968, before release the title was changed to “Head” as in ‘Head Trip’ The 4 Monkees, Bob Rafelson & Jack Nicholson went to a cabin in Ojai, CA. got high and wrote the basis for this movie MOST of the ideas used in the film were written by the 4 Monkees & Rafelson. Nicholson, just compiled them and assembled it into a screen play.

The Premise;
The 4 Monkees had become disillusioned with the whole made for TV Pop Band situation and decided to make a film and poke fun at themselves !!! Prime examples are: The band are dandruff in Victor Mature’s hair as a TV commercial. Frank Zappa makes his 2nd Monkees appearance as a critic telling David “Your song’s pretty white” Micky gets fed up and explodes a ‘Coke’ machine with a tank (aimed at corporate sponsorship) Nesmith’s bitter attitude towards his birthday and Christmas. Micky’s fed up with Hollywood and all it’s fakery in his scene with the lovely Teri Garr. Peter’s stance on wasting food and lending money. David expresses he just wants to dance and sing with Toni Basil (Oh, “Mickey” fame) who was David’s dance partner on more than this occasion. The famous boxer Sonny Liston (who had the ‘Phantom Punch’ with Ali) fights David, then Micky proclaims to be the dummy, but corrected by Peter that in fact he, Peter is the Dummy. In the 70s reruns of the film, the Viet Nam War footage was cut out for being deemed to controversial.
My personal favorite movie quote “You mean to tell me you don’t see the connection between the Government and laughing at people?”

The Music;
There is a soundtrack for this film with songs and dialog, upon my research this was a common thing to do in 1968 for film soundtracks. However there are only 7 songs for the hour and half film. There were many recorded and not used such as “Changes” “Down the Highway” “War Games” “Merry Go Round” “Look Down” “Hollywood” “Ceiling in My Room” & “If You Have the Time” was actually used in place of “Daddy’s Song” until the last minute when Nesmith produced the replacement Nilsson song for David. This is Tork’s shining moment, as he has 2 songs and great ones at that “Can You Dig It” & “Long Title” on this LP, as apposed to the 2 he had over 6 LPs before this. To prove a point the Monkees perform “Circle Sky” live in concert. Rhino Handmade CDs released a 3 CD Boxset of the soundtrack last year.

In Conclusion:
“Head” is the a typical 60s Psychedelic film, full of imagery, humor, sights, sounds & color. If you love this stuff as much as I do this is a film for you. I am biased so I will give it 5 out of 5 ‘Peace Signs’

Until the next time………. R.L.Schwinden aka MrZero
P.S. The name “Mr. Zero” came from The Monkees Episode # 52 “Devil and Peter Tork” from 5 Feb 1968 where Peter goes to Mr. Zero’s Pawn Shop to buy harp and accidentally sells his soul to the Devil who is “Mr. Zero” who was played by: Monte Landis.

“Lost My Stub” review 14 Feb 2012 (MZ: #E-5)

Welcome back Fans,
As it is the new year, and we have had unseasonably warm weather and still people are in denial about global warming, I thought I would cover an old environmental favorite film of mine. Unfortunately I am old enough to remember the first Eco craze of the early 70s. When the colour scheme was avocado green & harvest gold for about 3 years.

I saw this as a kid and moved me even back then. In the future American Airlines had built 3 spaceships, The Valley Forge, the Berkshire & one other, to hold all the last natural environments on earth. Freeman Lowell is the only Astronaut left that cares about the last remaining forests, trees, gardens & the animals that occupy them. The earth (clearly run by Republicans) decides it is no longer “Cost Effective” to maintain the last of the earth’s natural environments. (much like when the Republicans denounced Alien lifeforms because “There is NO financial gain in space travel”). So the crew begins to explode the the Eco- domes, and Lowell snaps, he ends up killing his ship mates in order to save the the very last Eco- dome containing the forest which he loves.

Losing himself and the ship in space Lowell becomes lonely and reprograms the maintenance drones in order to keep himself company. An awesome performance from the actors in the drones as they bring personalities to these robots without faces. In the end I personally feel Lowell’s guilt over comes him and brings us to the ending of the film. There are 2 fantastic songs performed by Joan Baez (who I met many years ago and have a great story about this meeting) “Rejoice in the Sun” & “Silent Running” So if you are remotely concerned about the planet we All Live On, this film is worth watching at least once, especially if you have children….

Until the next installment….
Happy 2012, MrZero

“Lost My Stub” (.Com) review 29 Feb 2012 (MZ: #G-7)

Back Again Fans,
I actually saw this movie when it came out in the theatre. I liked “Weird” Al (23Oct59) ok, but I was a huge fan of Victoria Jackson (2 Aug59) from “SNL” Blond Hair, Blue Eyes and… oh yea, I met her in Des Moines in 1998 she was awesome, anyway, I digress. I remembered Michael Richards(24Jul49) from the TV Show “Fridays” I feel this was his shining moment even over “Kramer” in ‘Seinfeld’ so let us begin the journey.

The Premise:
George Newman, is a daydreamer and has an active imagination and feels he is destine for bigger and better things, he’s fired from all his menial jobs, and luckily inherits a local UHF TV station (for our younger viewers back in the olden days of “Free” TV UHF had the weakest signal and was the hardest to watch when I was a kid In Sioux City CBS 14 was our UHF channel therefore I saw very few shows on CBS) Wow, no wonder I love this movie, I was like George only I opened “Mr. Zero’s” instead of a TV station !!! Cheers to the underdog and the under appreciated. May we all succeed at failing.

On with our story:
George discovers Stanley Spadowski and his mop (when I worked for a large music company in 2002 the night cleaning crew had a guy very similar to Stanley only instead of a mop this guy had his “Doodle Bug” the resemblance was so uncanny I showed my co-worker ‘Sonic Jeramone’ this film and he agreed “Man, he is just like Stanley”) and offers him a job as the station janitor and his own TV Show… It works and the little station becomes #1 in the ratings the evil big network channel (The Man) is out to squash George & his little UHF channel, let the shenanigans begin !!! Weird Al spoofs many films & TV shows from way back when, so I wonder if younger viewers may not get the references at first viewing ???

Not to be
A ‘Debbie Downer’ the actor Trinidad Silva 1950- 1988 who’s character has a an “Animal Show” in the film teaching poodles how to fly, was unfortunately Killed by a Drunk Driver during the filming of this movie. Silva was best know for his role on “Hill Street Blues”.

Music By:
There is a soundtrack to this film I personally feel some of Weird Al’s best work is original tunes like in this film the title track “UHF” or “The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota” and some others from other CDs like “Dare To Be Stupid” or “One More Minute” I saw him sing this one, live when I saw Weird Al open for The Monkees July 1987 in Des Moines, Iowa. I would say my favorite parody song he did was “Living With A Hernia” from 1986 a James Brown cover. Victoria Jackson has a couple CDs out too, one of her best songs “I Am Not A Bimbo” or “Where Do You Draw the Line Between Love and Adultery?” which I have seen her perform live in 1998 !!!!

In closing:
Again if you like stupid comedies where the hero comes out on top then this is a film for you.I give it 3 (out of 5) “Peace Signs”
Until the next one…. MrZero

www.LostMyStub.Com review 30 Dec 2011 (MZ: #C-3)

Greetings Film Fans,
This week I am going to cover an unusual film. This one was brought to my attention by my friend Lisa, who said “I got you this movie because you remind me of the main character “Seymour” so this caught my attention, so I went home and watched it.
To my chagrin she was right… I am a odd, lonely guy who collects all kinds of junk from the past, trying to educate young folks on on the history of music & Pop Culture… (with little success, I might add)

This is the kind of story I love, misfits going through life trying to find their way without completely selling out to fit in and staying true to themselves. Enid and Rebecca are about to graduate and find themselves bored with the everyday, so they pull a shenanigan on Seymour, only to find out that in his own odd way he is kind of interesting. Seymour collects vinyl LP records and Pop Culture Art. Enid is intrigued by him and wants to learn more. There are some uncomfortably great scenes in this film. Like when the 2 girls set up the shenanigan on Seymour at the malt shop. At the Record Collecting Party. When Enid goes to the Movie Shop. When the young ladies are at the convenience store waiting for Josh and meet ‘Doug’ and Doug’s response to the Owner’s insults. Seymour’s experience at the ‘Blue’s Club’ and finding his ‘Mystery lady’

Interesting soundtrack too “Devil Got My Woman” ‘Skip James’ and Seymour’s answer to Enid “There are no more songs like that” as well as “What Do I Get” by ‘The Buzzcocks’ an appearance by: J.J. Bad Boy Jones. “Jaan Pehechan Ho” by ‘Mohammad Rafi’ as well as many other forgotten gems from the 78 RPM era, because many 78 records were never transferred to 45 or even 33 1/3 rpm records. So fans if you cheer for the underdog, this film is for you, there are some real life out comes in this film too, for example in life there is not always a happy ending, which I myself also enjoy. A quirky fim for quirky people…..

Until, the next time: MrZero

www.LostMyStub.Com Review 8 Dec 2011 (MZ: #B-2)

Greetings Fans,
For today’s installment I thought I’d cover an old favorite of mine. I discovered this gem by accident, many years ago, I was a huge fan of Nicole Kidman. So I tried to collect or at least see every film she did to my surprise, I ended up loving this and many other Aussie made films !!! This is the second of a trilogy. Set in Australia in 1965, a boys boys boarding school across the lake from a girls boarding school, much like apposing armies. I read an interview with ‘Queen’s’ Freddie Mercury who described some of his experiences in boarding school, many are mirrored in this film. In June I showed this film to a lady friend who at the end of the film proclaimed “I love this film !”

A young boy who is constantly getting bullied by his class mates falls in love with the new arrival at the girl’s school, a young girl from Africa. The unlikely pairing of these 2 is what makes this story of love extremely interesting. As both are out casts of sorts, they find some sort of solace in each other. While there are those who ridicule the pair, there are also some who champion the pairing of the two. So much so that both earn and receive a fair amount of respect from those who bullied them in the beginning of the film.

Memorable scenes include: When Danny defends Thandiwe’s honor. What happens when Danny can not attend the dance he has promised his new found love. Who Danny gets paired up with for the musical production. The first time the two young lovers are together. Danny’s personal narration through out the film. The stand off between the girls and boys at the dance, and Interesting Soundtrack: “With a Girl Like You” ‘the Troggs’ “Tutti Frutti” ‘Little Richard’ (whom I have met) & “I Just Wanna Make Love To You” ‘Willie Dixon’

Well I absolutely love this coming of age film set in another country in another time, maybe you will too….. Until the next time; MrZero

SKID ROW 1986 to 1998

> SKID ROW: 1986- 1998 <
“BUZZ” Newspaper Article; Jun- Jul 2013 (#28-sR)

Back in 1989, I worked at RecordShop in Valley West Mall in Des Moines, Iowa I was really into the 60s, & really only into the 60s, my co-workers Joe & Rachael were into the current Pop Metal trend, which completely eluded me until I heard this song, they used to play called “Piece Of Me” this one really caught my attention. So I checked into the Cassette (NO ONE bought Vinyls then) read it & listened to this new band ‘SKID ROW’ I was hooked. My then girlfriend (Lori) at the time took me to see SKID ROW, (well she went to see Bon Jovi) in April 1989, they were awesome. So let the journey begin:
> Look At Me < It starts off with one Sebastian (Sebastian Philip Bierk: 3 Apr 1968: Freeport, Bahamas then Ontario) Bach: was the singer in a band 'KID WIKKED' in 1985, "Take A Look At Me" was released on Attic Records, (another song titled "Saved By Love" may have also been released). Bach was asked to audition, in 1987, for a band 'SKID ROW' from Toms River, NJ. Formed in 1986 by: Rachel Bolan (James Richard Southworth: 9 Feb 1966: Point Pleasant, NJ) on Bass with Snake Sabo (David Michael Sabo: 16 Sep 1964: Perth Amboy, NJ) on Guitar & Scotti Hill (Scott Lawrence Mulvehill: 31 May 1964: Manhasset, NY) also on Guitar & Rob Affuso (Robert James Affuso 1 Mar 1963: Newburgh, NY) on Drums & Matt Fallon (Matthew Frankel: 30 Sep 1965: Brooklyn, NY) on Vocals who had just recently left 'ANTRAX'. Sabo & Fallon had once played together in ‘STEAL FORTUNE' while Sabo met Affuso while auditioning for Bon Jovi, Sabo being a long time friend of Bon Jovi & the guitarist in Bon Jovi before Sambora. In fact Bon Jovi has played quite a role in the success of SKID ROW, from publishing to financial. The original SKID ROW opened for Bon Jovi in Dec 1986 on the "Slippery When Wet Tour" however Fallon left SKID ROW in early 1987, which lead to the audition & consequent hiring of Bach. It should be noted that there was a fairly successful Irish band from 1967- 1972 called "Skid Row" which was founded by Brendan Ian "Brush" Shiels (1946: Dublin) that band also had Lynott, Moore & Bell of 'Thin Lizzy' in this same band. There was/is a dispute over payment of the use of this name from 1987. The band was signed to Atlantic Records in 1988 through Doc McGee. Their debut CD “Skid Row” was released in Jan 1989 with the Billboard hits "18 And Life" a #4 Hit & "I Remember You" a #6 Hit. I still feel this is a perfect CD, not a bad track on it. There were 10 other songs demoed for this CD but not used. I was lucky enough to see them on the Bon Jovi "New Jersey Tour" on: 2 April 1989 @ Hilton Ames, Iowa Makin' a Mess Piece of Me Big Guns 18 and Life Can't Stand the Heartache Rattlesnake Shake I Remember You Here I Am Youth Gone Wild Some things I remember about this concert, the narrow margin of the stage SKID ROW was able to use, & the way the 4 front members whipped their heads around, their long hair looked like windmills & Bach kept punting beers into the crowd. I interviewed Hill & Sabo in Jun 2003, Hill "That 1st CD was written long before I was in the band. That 1st tour with Bon Jovi really brought us to the masses; I don't know that we would have been as big as we were without that tour". Later that year SKID ROW along with other bands McGee managed at that time were part of the "Moscow Peace Festival" SKID ROW opened the festival on 12 Aug 1989 ,a VHS only, was released of this festival something to note; "Holidays In The Sun" was 1 of the 6 songs performed at this concert. I remember when the VHS came out; our store was constantly asked for 'Gorky Park' 1 of the other bands at the festival. > Can You Scream < Back in the olden days VHS releases were part of a band's ‘Record Deal’ & contract releases, concert videos were insanely popular back then, with VHS & Laserdisc being the only 2 formats available, for example SKID ROW released 5 CDs & 3 VHS titles during their stint on Atlantic Records. So the band's next release was a VHS only "Oh, Say Can You Scream" released in Dec 1990 a concert video of 12 songs including "Cold Gin" "Train Kept A Rollin" & "Blitzkrieg Bop" with 3 music videos at the end. Then after what seemed like forever their 2nd CD "Slave To The Grind" was released in Jun 1991, now while the "Metal Dudes" love this CD, it is a break away from the "Pop Metal" genre of the 1st CD, the song "Wasted Time" hit #88 on the charts. I personally, thought it was terrible with only a few songs I felt listenable "Psycho Love" probably being the best track on here. Interestingly enough 2 versions of the CD were made, 1 for "Discount Stores" containing the song "Beggar's Day" the other for "Recordstores" containing the song "Get The F*** Out". The re-issue contains bonus tracks including "Get The F*** Out" (Live). Bach's father painted the CD cover. There were 2 other songs demoed for this CD but not used. The band embarked on a headlining tour with their biggest concert on 18 Jan 1992 Sao Paulo Brazil @ Estádio do Pacaembu a 16 song set including "Psycho Therapy", this concert was broadcast on TV in Latin America so it was readily available @ "RecordShows" (like the 1 held @ the VFW every 2 months in MPLS). Hill: "Why is the 2nd CD so different from the 1st, good question, most of the 1st album was written before 1988, whereas all of the 2nd was written on the road, music had changed, our tastes had changed & we had Sebastian in the band who was more heavy metal than Fallon." > Edgy & Mean < The next CD release is "B-Side Ourselves" in Sep 1992 a 5 song cover EP. About this same time Sabo wrote a song”Do Ya Wanna Touch Me Now" with Paul Stanley of KISS, originally to be used on KISS' "Revenge" CD, however the song remains unreleased. It has been my experience most bands in any genre have a zenith of about 18 to 26 months, I feel SKID ROW certainly falls into this category, because their next 2 releases will be VHS only, "Road Kill" a 2nd concert video with a 3-D music video released in Oct 1993 & then the following month of Nov "No Frills Video" is released, again VHS only, a collection of 7 music videos. After taking quite some time off "Subhuman Race" is released in Mar 1995 unfortunately at the height of "Grunge" this CD goes relativity unnoticed. The song "Breakin Down" is used as the title track to "Prophecy" a religious, Sci-Fi, Horror film released in Sep 1995. Now I, personally feel this CD is twice as good as the 2nd CD, but yet not as good as the 1st. Tracks that stand out for me "Into Another" "My Enemy" & "Frozen". Later in 1995 Japanese only CD "Subhuman Beings On Tour" was released with several live tracks. Sabo: "How did 'Breakin Down' come about, well, I'd like to tell you it was some great story, but it's not, I was watching a movie on TV one night, & I thought the soundtrack sucked, so I wrote this song I thought would have worked better, I can't even tell you what movie it was" Hill: "Strings I use live, I use .012 gauge on my high E, they stay in tune better and are really hard to break in concert" Sometime in 1996 SKID ROW was offered an opening slot for a KISS: New Year's Eve concert, Bach was all for it Bolan was totally against it, as Bolan had a side project, a punk band "Prunella Scales" who were playing at that time which interfered with the schedule, this band released 1 CD "Dressing Up The Idiot" in 1997. Bach was fired after an argument with Bolan ensued over passing up this opening slot for a side project. Hill: "Bach, yea he's a great guy til something bothers him, then it really starts to bother him" > You Lie Alone < Bach put together a Supergroup in 1996 "The Last Hard Men" with Kelley Deal; Guitar: Breeders, Jimmy Flemion; Guitar: Frogs & Jimmy Chamberlin; Drums: Smashing Pumpkins they released 1 CD under the same name, originally only 1000 copies in 1998, then remixed & released in 2001 on Spitfire Records. I saw ‘Bach & Friends’ on this tour in Des Moines, Iowa @ The Edge in Dec 1997 with Flemion, Richie Scarlet (Frehley's Comet) Bam Bam & Larry (Fisher: Sonic Seducers) on Bass. I was able to interview Bach after the show, I found him very cool & passionate Bach: "What happened with SKID ROW? I just couldn't work it out with those guys" Me "I couldn't help but notice you are stone cold sober when you're up there, cuz it takes one to know one" Bach: "This guy is awesome, thank you for noticing, most people think I'm a drugged out fool up there, you gotta have your wits about you to pull of the kind of show I do, sure I might have a drink but only, after the show, thank you, thank you for noticing, what tipped you off to this?" Me: “When you said, ‘Ok, who took my setlsit, sure it makes a great souvenir, but it kinda makes it hard to do the show” Bach: “(laughs) Right on, man” The final CD of the original band "40 Seasons" was released in Japan 1st in early 1998 & then in USA in Nov 1998, this CD is noteworthy because it contains the songs "Forever" & "Fire In The Hole" found only on this CD as well as remixes of 4 other songs. Rob Affuso left the band after a brief tour, where the remaining 4 members went out as "Ozone Monday" Bolan to me on the past SKID ROW lineup "F*** that, no comment" Both camps continued separately SKID ROW hired Johnny Solinger (7 Aug 1965: Texas) to replace Bach with 5 different drummers to date, including Phil Varone (15 Oct 1967: Long Island, NY. Saigon Kick) from 2000- 2004. They released 3 CDs; 'Thick Skin” 2003, “Revolutions Per Minute” 2006 & “United World Rebellion” 2013. I have seen this version of the band 3 times in 2000 & once in 2003. While the musicianship & the energy are there, the attitude is not, sans Bach. Affuso has said he would not rejoin the band without Bach. Bach continued solo releasing 5 CDs & 1 DVD, which are "Bring 'Em Bach Alive!" 1999, "Bach 2: Basics" 2001, "Forever Wild" (DVD) 2004 "Angel Down" 2007, "Kicking & Screaming" 2011 & "ABachalypse Now" 2013 as well as appearing on the Broadway stage, Reality TV, Cartoons & TV Series. Bach is a born "Personality" & has done quite well for himself. Never say never, while I think it is unlikely Bach will reunite with SKID ROW, even if they do it will never be like their heyday from 1989-1993, as they are older now & not some youth gone wild from New Jersey. Make no mistake if they do, I will be there .... By: RLSchwinden: MrZERo 1744 Lexington Ave. N. St. Paul, MN. 55113 *Est. 2009 www.MrZeros.Com

When I was in hIGH CRuel everyone around me was a Beatles Fan, because Lennon had just been killed. I, however was a Rolling Stones fan, they were grittier and Rocked !!! So this time I am going to do 50 years in about 4.5 pages (wish me luck). This article is dedicated to “Poster John” & “Uncle Larry”

“Gathers No Moss”
When Childhood friends Mick (Michael Philip Jagger 26 July 1943: Dartford, Kent) & Keith Richard (later re- adding an “S” in 1978, born 18 Dec 1943: Dartford, Kent) reconnected sometime in 1960 in a train station & began discussing Muddy Waters & Chuck Berry records they realized they had something in common. Along with Bassist Dick Taylor & Drummer Tony Chapman & at one time Mick Avory of The Kinks. Jagger, Richards & Taylor found Brian Jones (Lewis Brian Hopkins Jones: 28 Feb 1942 – 3 July 1969: Cheltenham, Gloucestershir) & Ian Stewart (Ian Andrew Robert Stewart: 18 Jul 1938 – 12 Dec 1985: Pittenweem, East Neuk, Fife, Scotland) & & Charlie Watts (Charles Robert Watts: 2 Jun 1941: Kingsbury) playing with the legendary Alexis Koener’s “Blues Incorporated”. Shortly thereafter Stewart secured a practice space and the band was born. It was Jones who named the Band after a Muddy Waters song “Rollin’ Stone” The band played their very 1st gig at the Marquee Club on 12 Jul 1962 with Stewart, Taylor & Chapman. Later on in Dec 1962 Bill Wyman (William George Perks: 24 Oct 1936: Lewisham, South London) incidentally Wyman created the 1st Fret-less Electric Bass Guitar in 1961. Then later in Jan 1963 Watts replaced Avory.

The band’s records came out on Decca in UK, and on the London label in USA, in 1971 the band formed Rolling Stones Records distributed by Virgin. They have released some 107 Single 45s many contain Non-LP Tracks such as: “Stoned” “The Singer Not The Song” & “We Love You” as well as 29 Studio LPs, 17 Live LPs & some 30 Compilation LPs
In the early days for some unknown reason when the entire Band wrote a song they used the fictitious name of Nanker/Phlege? So the band actually wrote 12 songs that most people do not realize are in fact Rolling Stones original compositions.
I have been dealing in “Used” Records since 1976 when I lived in Jackson, MS. one thing I consistently hear, is there has been much confusion over what a “True” Import is, vs. the traditional Bootleg being referred to as an Import in an attempt to Fool the RIAA & FBI. So here is a ‘true’ example of an ‘Import’ a Title like “No.2” released in another country, and Not released in the USA. A different example is “December’s Children” released only in the USA in Dec 1965, and does not have a UK counterpart release.

“One Winner, One Prize, The Pick Of The Lot”
The band primarily known for being British R&B were asked by the record company to ride the current wave of “Psychedelia & Flower Power” so in the USA the London Label put out “Flowers” a near equivalent to The Beatles “Yesterday… And Today” also a USA only release. Then they were asked to record an LP similar to “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Harts Club Band” the result “Their Satanic Majesties Request” in Dec 1967, tracks I really like are “Citadel” & “Gomper” the band even used the same photographer used on “Sgt. Pepper” originally this LP was released in the much sought after 3-D flicker cover. I have seen out-take photos of the photo session and the band themselves cut up a “Sgt. Pepper” LP cover and used the 4 Beatles photos in the collage built for the photo shoot. Later in 1979 KISS would record a cover of “2000 Man” from this LP, sung by Ace Frehley.

After The Beatles released “The White Album” the Stones returned to their roots and released “Beggar’s Banquet” in Dec 1968. stand out tracks “Parachute Woman” & “Salt of the Earth” To promote the LP the band filmed the widely publicized “Rock N Roll Circus” on 11 Dec 1968, however this event would go unreleased until 1996, as the Stones thought The Who stole the show and their own performance was lack luster.
In Jun 1969 Jagger, Richards & Watts informed Brian Jones his services were no longer needed & Jones was let go. As he was hardly contributing to the most recent recordings & could not go out on tour. On 3 Jul 1969 Jones was found dead at the bottom of his own swimming pool. There is a film titled “Stoned” from 2005 that alludes to the idea Jones was murdered by a man, Frank Thorogood, who he had hired to renovate his house
The LP “Let It Bleed” was released in Dec 1969 it had 2 songs with Jones & 2 Jones with Taylor. Also this LP contained a Stones anthem as the legend goes, when the Stones were on their USA tour in 1964 they played “Big Reggie’s Ballroom” in Excelsior @ an Amusement Park on 6 Dec 1964, a man named Jimmy Hutmaker claims he met Jagger at a drug store, and is the inspiration for the “Mr. Jimmy” in the song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” released in Jul 1969. In the continuing effort to “Copy” The Beatles, this song was their response to “Hey Jude”.

“Life Has Got Me In It’s Sway”
“Mick” Michael Kevin Taylor (17 Jan 1949: Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire) was hired in late Jun 1969 to replace Jones, Taylor had replaced Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1965 until he was asked to join the Stones. His debut was at this “Free” concert before 250,000.

Probably my favorite Stones LP is “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out” from Sep 1970, with “Stray Cat Blues” being my favorite track as well as “Jumpin Jack Flash” & “Street Fighting Man”. Joining in 1969 Guitarist Taylor quit in Dec 1974 citing musical differences claiming he Co-Wrote “Sway” & “Time Waits For No One” & several others, & he did not received his proper writing credits. I missed seeing Mick Taylor solo on 21 Aug 2001 MN. Zoo Amphitheater, my friend Scott said it was an amazing show and he finally got to meet his guitar hero. I did however get to see Bill Wyman, the night before at the very same venue on 20 Aug 2001. During the show he told us a joke: “A bus driver comes home from work calling to his wife, “I’ve won 5 million Pounds from lottery” she says “You have” he responds “Why yes I have, so pack your bags” she asks “Where are we going?” he says “Nowhere, now sod off” He signed my 8Track of his solo album from Jun 1974 “Monkey Grip” he asked me “That’s an 8Track?” I said “Yes it is” he responded “I’d sure like to have that…” I said “Just sign my “Jumpin Jack Flash” 45 Sleeve and it’s yours” he responded “Sorry, mate, no, Stones, I can’t sign any Stones items”

“5 Million Dollars Be My Price”
After the band lost a 2nd guitarist in just 5 years they enlisted “Ronnie” (Ronald David Wood: 1 Jun 1947 Hillingdon, Middlesex) in Mar 1975 Wood left the Band “The Faces” to join the Stones. Wood’s 1st full fledged recording with the band “Some Girls” released Jun 1978. With a very sought after 1st edition cover because 5 actress’ pictured on the cover complained, Ball, Fawcett, Welch, Garland & Monroe threatened to file suit so the cover was recalled.

The 1st time I missed seeing the Stones live was when I lived in Mesa, Az. 1981 the band played in Tempe, AZ @ Sun-devil Stadium 13 Dec 1981, however they were kind enough to film the concert and release it as “Let’s Spend The Night Together” in 1983 on VHS & Laserdisc. While I was living in AZ. I read an interview with Johnnie Bolin: drummer from “DVC” “Black Oak Arkansas” & “Tommy Bolin Band” where he cited Charlie Watts as his favorite drummer. Years later while living in Des Moines, IA. I missed seeing the Stones for a 2nd time, as I had just got back from seeing The Monkees 4 times in 1 weekend only a month earlier, however my friend Michael was savoy enough to tape the concert for me, so here’s the set-list from that show:

7 Oct 1989 Ames, Iowa: Cyclone Stadium
Start Me Up
Bitch
Sad, Sad, Sad
Undercover of the Night
Harlem Shuffle (Bob & Earl cover)
Tumbling Dice
Miss You
Ruby Tuesday
Angie
Rock and a Hard Place
Mixed Emotions
Honky Tonk Women
Midnight Rambler
You Can’t Always Get What You Want
Before They Make Me Run
Happy
Paint It Black
2000 Light Years from Home
Sympathy for the Devil
Gimme Shelter
It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It)
Brown Sugar
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
Jumpin’ Jack Flash

After the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tours Wyman decided to call it a day and left the band in 1992, reportedly Jagger had asked him to stay as the next LP & Tour was several years away, Wyman declined and left.

Then I finally got to see the Stones for the 1st time on 1 Oct 1994 Ames, Iowa @ Cyclone Stadium, I remember it was packed and cold towards the end of the night. I also have a tape of that show.
In 1998 ‘The Verve’ were sued for essentially stealing “The Last Time” the orchestrated version that Andrew Loog Oldham created for his LP in 1965, for their song “Bitter Suite Symphony” Richards has stated “Why should I be flattered about having my music ripped off”

The 2nd time I got to see the Stones was in St. Paul, MN. @ Xcel Center 5 Sep 2005, I do remember the crowd was made up of mostly “Baby Boomers” not a whole lot of younger folks, which made me wonder about, not only the state of this band, but Rock N Roll in general ??? Well if nothing else the Beach Boys & The Rolling Stones turned 50 this year, and put out some product & toured to commemorate the fact…

Blast from the Past … Into the NOW !!!

QUEEN of the whole wide world

“Queen Of The Whole Wide World”
BUZZ: Newspaper Article Oct- Nov 2012 (#20-T)

In the wake of the much anticipated “Freddie Mercury” film, with Sacha Baron Cohen, I thought I would cover certain aspects of “Queen” this time round.

>Doing All Right< Sometime in 1963 Brian May (Brian Harold May: 19 Jul 1947: Hampton, UK) a 16 year old boy & his Dad built a guitar. Brian dubbed this the "Red Special" made from the wood of a fireplace & motorcycle & bicycle parts. Interesting note here, my drummer, Pat, from our old band "Palace Guard" sometime in 1985 made friends with one Chris Jagger (yes, Mick's brother). Chris was a huge 'Queen' fan and Brian allowed Chris to make blueprints of the "Red Special", Chris sent a copy to my drummer friend Pat who in return gave me a copy of the Blueprints off the original Brian May "Red Special" In 1968 college students May & Tim Staffell (Timothy: 24 Feb 1948: Isleworth, UK) formed a band called "Smile" they auditioned drummer Roger Meddows Taylor ( 26 Jul 1949: King's Lynn, Norfolk UK) & recorded the 45 single "Earth" b/w "Step On Me" #72977 Mercury in 1969 as well as 4 other tracks in 1969, one being "Doing Allright". Their demo was sent to Apple Records, legend has it McCartney loved their Logo. Meanwhile Staffell became friends with a fellow art student Freddie (Farrokh Bulsara: 5 Sep 1946- 24 Nov 1991 Zanzibar, Tanzania, who later changed his name to Mercury in 1971). Freddie was a fan of the band 'Smile' so when Staffell left for another band sometime in 1970. Freddie joined the 2 remaining members and got a new bass player, one Barry Mitchell and became 'Queen' at Freddie's suggestion. Freddie even created the 'Queen' crest in art class incorporating the band member’s zodiac signs into the logo. I will point out ultimately Staffell did not do too bad for himself after leaving the band, as he went on to help create "Thomas The Tank Engine” In Feb 1971 the band found their final bass player in John Richard Deacon (19 Aug 1951: Oadby, UK) >Great King Rat< Having been together for a few years the band recorded a demo & recorded their 1st LP from Dec 1971 through Nov 1972, and finally in Jul 1973 Queen "1" was released. An unbelievably great LP, not to mention, their debut, and a very progressive effort, favorites of mine are: "Liar" "Jesus" & "Son And Daughter" In Mar 1974 the band released its 2nd LP titled "2" a concept LP, with one side being "White" and the other being "Black" I personally feel this is their greatest work, bar none. Stand out tracks for me are: "Ogre Battle" "Father To Son" & "Loser In The End" also the 45 single for "Seven Seas of Rhye" has a Non-LP track "See What A Fool I've Been". Later this same year in Nov 1974 the band released their 3rd LP "Sheer Heart Attack" a real departure from their 1st 2 efforts, delivering a few styles of music, and scoring their 1st of many chart hits with "Killer Queen" #12 on the Billboard Charts in May 1975. My favorites are: "Tenement Funster" "She Makes Me" & "Now I'm Here". >Profit’s Song< And then came the song of all songs, the band releases "A Night At The Opera" in Nov 1975, the 1st of 2 titles of Groucho Marx film titles used for their LPs. So much has been written about this album, what more can I really say about this one? This LP yielded 2 hit singles "Bohemian Rhapsody" released in Oct 1975, and hit #2 (nope not a #1) on the charts & "You're My Best Friend" #16 in Jul 1976. Although here are my favorite tracks from the LP: "I'm In Love With My Car" "Death On Two Legs" & "Sweet Lady" Listed below is the setlist of a Queen concert from this time period to give you an idea of what the band played live in concert. >Now, I’m Here … In Concert< 24 Dec 1975 London, UK @ Hammersmith Odeon (Available on Audio & Video) Now, I'm Here Ogre Battle White Queen Bohemian Rhapsody/ Killer Queen /March Of The Black Queen/ Bohemian Rhapsody Bring Back That Leroy Brown Brighton Rock/ Son And Daughter Keep Yourself Alive Liar In The Lap Of The God's ... revisited Big Spender/Jailhouse Rock /Stupid Cupid/ Be Bop A Lula/ Jailhouse Rock Seven Seas Of Rhye See What A Fool I've Been God Save The Queen The band toured the USA 8 times between Apr 1974 to Sep 1982. Once when I interviewed Bruce Kulick of KISS in 1990, I asked him "How can you be in one of the biggest bands in the world and still be so level headed and cool to your fans" Kulick replied "I met Brian May of Queen in the 70s when Queen was on top of the world and he was so kind to me, an unknown, at the time, I decided then, that if Brian May can be that way at the height of his fame, then I should be too" >Long Away< The band well on their way to super-stardom releases "A Day At The Races" in Dec 1976 with the lead 45 single "Somebody To Love" charting at #13 in Dec 1976 & "Tie Your Mother Down" #47 in Mar 1977. Everyone has their own opinions, that being said I do not feel this was a strong follow up to the previous LP. Here are the tracks I favor: "White Man" "You And I' & "Long Away" Then the band strikes gold once again in Oct 1977 with "News Of The World" & the double "A" side single "We Will Rock You" & "We Are The Champions" a #4 hit in Feb 1978 they did release 2 other singles from this LP however the other failed to chart as high as the 1st single. My personal favorites, and this is one hard, as this is a great LP, "Fight From The Inside" "Get Down, Make Love" & "It's Late". The original cover painting was done by Frank Kelly Freas in Oct 1953 titled "The Gulf Between". I heard on a radio interview Groucho Marx was flattered Queen used 2 of his films names for album titles and offered the next title they might use was "At The Circus" the band passed on that title however, there was a bootleg record LP put out on Rodan Records #SLA- 0007 using the title "Duck Soup" (another Marx film) of the concert on 13 Mar 1977 Seattle, WA. @ The Arena. >If You Can’t Beat Them< Well, for me here's where the bottom falls out for the band. "Jazz" was released in Nov 1978, while they had a huge double "A" side hit once again with "Bicycle Race" b/w "Fat Bottomed Girls" #24 in Jan 1979, this LP is a miss for me, much like "Day At The Races" I feel the band became once again too creative trying once again many types of music, that was just lost on me, however I did like these tracks "Fun It" "Let Me Entertain You" & "More Of That Jazz". In Jun 1979 the band released their 1st "Live Album" which contained a "Hard Rock Version" of "We Will Rock You" which I feel is equally as good as the original. Then in an unusual move for the time the band release a 45 single "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" in Aug 1979, their 1st #1 on the charts, with No follow LP until "The Game" was released in Jun 1980, containing their 2nd #1 "Another Bites The Dust" from Oct 1980. The 2nd 45 single "Play The Game" from this LP contained the Non-LP "B-Side" "A Human Body" my favorite tracks from this one are: "Rock It" "Save Me" & "Sail Away Sweet Sister" >In The Space Capsule< Following the trend of the past few years the band try yet again something different, a film soundtrack "The Flash" in Feb 1981 while there were some shining moments in "The Hero" & "Flash's Theme" I personally find this one a little hard to get into. I find the film awful except the brilliant color scheme. Then in Oct 1981 the band team up with David Bowie to release "Under Pressure" #29 on the charts b/w the Non-LP track "Soul Brother" the "A" side was featured on the 1st "Greatest Hits" album, later on "Hot Space" was released in May 1982, This would be their last album for Electra Records. The tracks I prefer from this LP: "Calling All Girls" "Las Palabras de Amor" & "Life Is Real". The band decide to take a year off in this time period 1983 & May releases the "Starfleet" EP in Oct 1983 with Eddie Van Halen on Lead Guitar. Also this year would find the band on a new record label; Capitol Records. Interesting note, during the CD boom from 1987 to 1990 No Queen albums originally released on Electra were commercially available on CD, Capital Records did release a "Promo" only "Best Of" CD in 1989 #DPRO- 79591 in anticipation of releasing the catalog, this did not come to fruition, until in 1991when Hollywood Records offered the band more money & a better percentage of royalties. >Show Must Go On< The band did continue to record, release records and tour up until Freddie's death in Nov 1991 (oddly enough KISS' Eric Carr died the very same day 24 Nov 1991) with several of the releases being really good, however they never really regained the success of their heyday, and I do have to wind this down at some point, and I do not want to cover the Paul Rogers period what so ever. So I leave you with this Brain May quote: "Who wants to live forever" MrZERo aka: RL Schwinden www.MrZeros.Com 1744 Lexington & Larpenteur St. Paul, MN. 55113 "Nerd Is The Word"

High Fidelity

High Fidelity

“High Fidelity” (My Top 20)
“BUZZ” Newspaper Article Jun-Jul 2012 (#16-P)

“Good Evening ! Welcome To Our Show …”

I am often curious “Who” actually reads this stuff I write, and what do they think of it when they do?
Any one who knows me, will know there is a movie out, that mirrors my life very closely.
It is “High Fidelity” 2000 Touchstone
From my first official film review, I thought I would tackle the “Real Life” Story of Me !!!
“Championship Vinyl” would be ‘Mr. Zero’s’. I would be Rob Gordon. Laura would be someone we shall call “Kay” Charlie would be someone we will refer to as “Naomi”, Dick would be a person we will call “Scooter” and Barry would be “Funzie”

This story takes place in a record-shop as the owner Rob recalls, his Top 5 failed relationships and why they happened. Though the film takes place in Chicago (me: St. Paul) the book was written by a British Novelist: Nick Hornby in 1995. Rob like many people Used To… well, gets through life, love & pain though music. It’s a very realistic look at the people who work in this environment as well as shop in these now dying breed, type shops. Rob likes to make lists and alphabetize and categorize things, music, books, dreams and so forth. I recently showed this film to my now “EX-GF” and explained this is a documentary on “What not to do, not an instructional video on how to do” I don’t think she understood my meaning.

Rob takes us through a musical journey through his life and current goings on. The soundtrack to this film is really good too: stand out tracks are: “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” ’13th Floor Elevators’ & “I’m Wrong about Everything” ‘John Wesley Harding’ & “I Believe” by ‘Stevie Wonder’ Many of the events in this film Actually Mirror My Very Own Life, you can ask “Kay” she can verify this. There are some incredibly memorable scenes like what Rob does, when he finds out has a 9% chance of getting back with Laura. Rob’s very logical reaction to Charlie when he was left standing in the rain. When Ray comes to resolve the conflict between he, Laura & Rob (note: watch for the flying teeth) When Dick finds Anna Moss. Rob explaining how to make a great “Mix Tape” for the one you love…
For those of us who were or still are in the business, this is a roller coaster of emotions. Another really cool thing about this film is it’s cool & funny enough for guys yet enough emotion for the ladies too….I have heard one person say it’s about “Fear of commitment” and most recently “About an Audiophile, obsessive compulsive personality” so I find different people come away with different things
In my book a must see…..MrZero (1968 Keith Relf/Yardbirds)
So this time ’round I would like to cover my Top 20 Favorite Albums in order of release:

1. (Meet) The Monkees: 1966 Colgems
I loved this record from the very 1st time my Uncle John played “Last Train to Clarksville” for me about 1968 I would guess. Though basically it’s a “Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart” Record with Micky Dolenz & David Jones Vocals over their music it is an unsurpassed ‘Pop’ Record from it’s time. My favorites tracks are: “Tomorrow’s Gonna Be Another Day” “Sweet Young Thing” & “This Just Doesn’t Seem To Be My Day”

2. The Beatles: “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hart’s Club Band” 1967 Capitol
Probably the Greatest Recording of all time. Did you know it is predominantly a Paul McCartney Production? What do I say about this one, that hasn’t already been said, except here’s my favorites. “Fixing A Hole” “A Day In The Life” & “Within You With Out You”

3. Jimi Hendrix: “Smash Hits” 1969 Reprise/Track
Although it is a Hits/Best Album several songs were not on his other 3 LPs. I love this album from the cover to the rare poster that once came with the original pressings. There was no one greater than Jimi. My favorite tracks here are: “All Along The Watchtower” “Stone Free” & “Hey Joe” Also the UK version contains a song not found on any other LP. “The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam’s Dice”

4. Steppenwolf: “7” 1970 Dunhill
When I was a kid in Sioux City, my Dad Bill drove a 60’s VW White Beetle with an 8Track Player, he owned 3 tapes and this is one of them. However this is a fantastic LP through and through. This lineup of the band only recorded this 1 LP which is too bad, as I always wonder what a follow up would have been like. My favorites from this one are: “Foggy Mental Breakdown” “Hippo Stomp” & “Renegade”

5. Partridge Family: “Sound Magazine” 1971 Bell
This one really gives my age away and I guess it’s now time to embrace it. This album came out at the right time for me, after the Monkees but before Black Sabbath & KISS. You may not realize as The Monkees project was winding down ‘the powers that be’ shifted 60% of the musicians & writers from The Monkees to The Partridge Family, they just substituted Micky Dolenz’s voice for David Cassidy’s voice !!! My top choices here “Summer Days” “Rainmaker” & “I’m On My Way Back Home” by former Monkees’ writer Bobby Hart.

6. Black Sabbath: “Vol.4” 1972 Warner Bros.
I was a kid when my Uncle John played the albums “Paranoid” & “Masters of Reality” for me, now while I was blown away by “War Pigs” “Iron Man” & “After Forever” it wasn’t till the blissful sounds of “Vol.4” (also know as “Snowblind”) that solidified me as a ‘Black Sabbath’ Fan !!!! The epitome here “Supernaut” “Snowblind” & “Wheels Of Confusion/the straightener”

7. Deep Purple: “Who Do We Think We Are” 1973 Warner Bros.
When I was going to East Jr. (Ardvark) “Jesus Christ Superstar” was everywhere, Ian Gillian had played ‘Jesus’ in the musical, therefore, “Who Do We Think We Are” this one is often over looked as it was the last one with Gillian & Roger Glover (until 9 years later) but I think it is their finest hour (yes even over the Tommy Bolin one) highlights “Smooth Dancer” “Rat Bat Blue” & “Super Trooper”

9. Alphonse Mouzon (& Tommy Bolin): “Mind Transplant” 1975 Blue Note
I am not a true ‘Jazz’ guy nor do I care much for Instrumentals, however I can listen to this LP every day and never tire of it. I loved this LP so much we used in it a “Mr. Zero’s” commercial (w/ My EX. Dy M.) and almost got in trouble with Mouzon himself (I was actually flattered Alphonse contacted me over this). My favorite tracks are “Mind Transplant” “Snow bound” & “Carbon Dioxide”

9. Rush: “2112” 1976 Mercury
When my Aunt Cat first played this record for me, I thought “What’s up with this guys voice?” then I read the lyrics … I was hooked. I began reading Ayn Rand (me being of Soviet decent didn’t hurt either) for English literature right there and then, and a writer was born … ME !!! (whether you like my stuff or not). Based on Rand’s “Anthem” what a masterpiece. My favorites “Side #1” “Something for Nothing” & “Lessons”

10. Tommy Bolin: “Private Eyes” 1976 Columbia
Tommy Bolin … well what can I say he didn’t do too bad for a talented kid from the ‘North Side’ of Sioux City, Iowa. A true inspiration to all of us kids from Sioux City. As you may or may not know I am writing a book on Tommy with his Drummer & Brother Johnnie Bolin “Post Toastee” due out in Aug 2013. My favorites here: “Sweet Burgundy” “Someday Will Bring Our Love Home” & “Hello Again”

11. KISS: “Rock N Roll Over” 1976 Casablanca
I remember seeing the commercial for this album on TV when I was a kid at Brandon Jr. High in Jackson, MS. I thought “Oh, my God, the look the music the art … This IS the Band For ME!!!” I still get chills whenever I hear Gene sing from that time period !!! I thought when I 1st heard “See You In Your Dreams” this song is so good we will see it again on another LP, and sure nuff just 2 years later we did. A true band collaboration, as all 4 members played on all 10 tracks and 3 of the members wrote songs for this LP. (excluding Ace, as he had just gotten married and was on a Honeymoon then sick during the per-production) there is only 1 out-take that I know of a $immon$ song “Queen For A Day” the backing tracks were recorded with the intention of Ace singing his 1st Lead Vocal on record. My favorites: “Baby Driver” “Love Em And Leave Em” & “Makin Love”

12. Cheap Trick: “All Shook Up” 1980 Epic
Well in “hIGH CruEL” I was not a ‘Cheap Trick’ fan. What I had heard was all kind of Pop Trash, until one of my best friends Brett ‘Strat’ R. played this album for me. oh man did that change my mind !!! With tracks like “Stop This Game’ “Love Comes A Tumblin Down” & Baby Loves To Rock” also this LP was produced by The Beatles George Martin. You just can Not go wrong.

13. The Kinks: “Give The People What They Want” 1981 Arista
Now I was already a ‘Kinks’ fan from way back when “You Really Got Me” etc. but then a funny thing happened, their song “Destroyer” came out and it was new and retro and at the exact same time. I Loved it. So when I got the LP from my friend Kevin S. I was blown away with tracks like “Add It Up” “Back To Front” & “Yo Yo”. I defiantly feel their strongest effort overall.

14. Thin Lizzy: “Renegade” 1981 Warner Bros.
Being Irish I was a ‘Thin Lizzy’ fan but I learned about this LP from the local band ‘DVC’ with my long time friends John Bartle & Johnnie Bolin, I saw them perform “Hollywood” one night, so I went and picked up the album, what a surprise !!! With other stand outs like “Mexican Blood” “Angel Of Death” & “No One Told Him” and the follow up to this one was almost as great !!!

15. Hanoi Rocks: “Two Steps From The Move” 1984 Epic
When my buddy Eric D. were getting my 2nd band together in 1982 I was describing what I wanted to do and he said “Oh, yea like Hanoi Rocks” so I checked them out and he was correct !!! From this their finest LP “I Can’t Get It” “Cutting Corners” & Underwater World” however the title track was left off (there are 2 out-take versions) and that song too, is equally as great !!!

16. Faster Pussycat: “Wake Me When It’s Over” 1989 Electra
Unfortunately billed as “Electra’s” ‘GnR’ these guys never quite got a fair shake. They did 3 studio LPs while originally together, and I am proud to say (and Matt M. will back me up on this one) I followed These Cats from “Day One” although the 2nd album is by far their best with “Ain’t No Way Around It” “Little Dove” & “Where There’s A Whip There’s A Way” I did an ‘In Store’ with these Cats in S. Des Moines, Iowa in Jun 90 and it was the 2nd largest turn out they had outside of L.A. their hometown.

17. Skid Row: (1st) 1989 Atlantic
I was turned onto this band by a co-worker Racheal. I wasn’t sold on them at first, then I heard the track “Piece Of Me” a few times, more, as well as “Here I Am” along with “Rattlesnake Shake” outstanding. I saw these guys on their 1st major tour in 1990. I also meet and interviewed Sebastian, Scottie Hill & Snake Sabo, But that’s for another article.

18. Type O Negative: “October Rust” 1996 Roadrunner
Absolutely the best New band to emerge out of the 90s, I first saw them open for ‘Marilyn Manson’ I was hooked, I told my gal at the time (Kay) “I love these guys” she said “Yea, me too, I love music that when it’s done, I want to go kill myself …” with gems like “Love you To Death” “Haunted” & “Wolf Moon” I saw them many times over the years and was able to interview them too, again another day for this one too.

19. Madonna: “Ray Of Light” 1998 Maverick/WB
I first heard this one while opening a “DiscJockey” Store in Columbia, MO. I was already a Madonna fan, but I always thought how can she top the “True Blue” LP. Well she did with this one “Frozen” “Power Of Goodbye” & “Nothing Really Matters” and the out-take “Beautiful Stranger” unsurpassed !!!

20. Tori Amos: “Scarlet’s Walk” 2002 Atlantic
I hate to keep repeating myself but here again I was already a Tori fan. Then one cold day fall of 2002 Tori dropped this bomb on me. Oh, man … “Crazy” “Sorta Fairytale” & “Pancake” I really feel her finest work yet.

So there you have it, my “Top 20” Now I invite you to make your own “Top 20” and let me know why, Email me at Rik@MrZeros.Com and, I know you’re all saying “What about band’s like LZ, PF, FZ, MJ & N, ???”
Well, it’s just this simple, If I did not mention them … I do Not Like Them, Sam I Am.
Until the next time … See you on the flipside!
