Ace Frehley: Solo

“BUZZ” Newspaper Article (#44-aF Nov- Dec 2014) By:RLSchwinden

>Hatched: 1951<

He was born Paul Daniel Frehley on Fri 27 April 1951 in Bronx NYC, he like everyone else saw ‘The Beatles’ on Ed Sullivan in Feb ’64 this combined with his love for ‘The Ventures’ took up playing guitar & promptly leaving his street gang ‘The Ducky Boys’ behind, he was initially dubbed “Punky” in the ‘Jr. Duckies’. Punky’s 1st real band was ‘The Exterminators’ an instrumental band in 1965. Punky’s neighbor was Peppy Castro (Emil Theilhelm:16 Jun 1949) Guitarist in the ‘Blues Magoos’ who had a #5 hit in Nov 1966 with “We Ain’t Got Nothin Yet”. Punky said “If Peppy can make so can I, I’m as good as he is”

Punky’s 2nd band in 1967 was a power trio named ‘King Kong’. Sometime in 1967 Punky hooked up his buddy Chris on a date with the girl Chris had his eye on. Chris in return gave “Punky” his new nickname “Ace” for being a real “Ace” for hooking him up on that date. Ace’s 3rd band was ‘Magic People’ in 1968 with Larry Kelly: Vocals, Chris Camiolo: Drums & Tom Stella: Bass. At this time Ace played a Japanese Tele cut into a “Teardrop” shape. Larry co-wrote the song “Rip It Out” that would come out on Ace’s 1st solo LP in Sep ’78.

>Pygmie Musical Instrument: 1971<
Ace seemed to drift from band to band, like the ‘Muff Divers’ in 1969, then ‘Cathedral’ in 1970. Ace’s 1st recording experience was with the band ‘Molimo’ a 6 member band; Christine Murphy: Vocals,Tom Ellis: Vocals & Guitar, Roy Singer: Piano & Keyboards, Paul Frehley: Guitar, Barry Dempsey: Bass, Dave Polinski: Drums. which was signed to RCA Records. At this time Ace was playing a a Japanese Strat cut into a “Curved Flying V”. On 22 Mar 1971 on the radio show “Rock Stars” with Richard Robinson their song “East Of Yesterday” was played with an interview of 4 band members including Ace. On 7 Dec 1971 they recorded a 3 song demo
RCA #7-0265-2: 1. Golden Age 2. Wash My Sins Away 3. Look
Interesting to note: in 1974 Murphy, Ellis & Singer had a band “Tomorrow Morning” that was signed to Casablanca Records & Produced By: Kerner & Wise.

>Flash & Ability: 1972<

In Dec 1972 Ace’s best friend Bobby McAdams saw an ad in ‘The Village Voice’ which lead to Ace joining ‘KISS’ from; Jan 1973 to Nov 1982 & returning from Aug 1995 to Oct 2001. The 1st recording (that I know of) Ace did outside of ‘KISS’ was ‘Crazy Joe Renda’ a song titled “Eugene” in 1981 with John Regan & Rob Sabino. Ace did record with ‘KISS’ in a manner of speaking on the LP “WOW” by: Wendy O. Williams in 1984 on the song”Bump And Grind” with Gene $immon$.

>Better Get To The Recordstore: 1984<

Ace’s post ‘KISS’ band was ‘Frehley’s Comet’ formed sometime in 1984, with Anton Fig: Drums, John Regan: Bass, Richie Scarlet: Guitar & Vocals & Arthur Stead: Keyboards. The band recorded a demo for Bronze Records:
1. Angel (Scarlet)
2. Rock Or Be Rocked (Frehley)
3. Back On The Streets (Scarlet: also recorded by: Vinnie Vincent: 1982)
4. Stranger In A Strange Land (Frehley: 1969)

With Ace’s ‘KISS’ contract expiring his band released their 1st LP on 7 Jul 1987 “Frehley’s Comet”. There were several other songs recorded as demos for consideration for the 1st LP some of those being:
I Will Survive
I Got The Touch
I’m an Animal
Back In My Arms Again
Audio/ Video (Catch My Fall)
Wired Up
The Hurt Is On
Girl Can’t Dance
You Make It Hard For Me

>Year Of The Comet: 1988<

The next release was an EP “Live +1” on 2 Feb 1988, recorded on 4 Sep 1987 in Chicago @ Aragon Ballroom a *VHS “Live + 4” was released around Summer 1988, but recorded on 19 Mar 1988 in London UK @ Hammersmith Odeon. The Band’s 2nd LP “Second Sighting” came out on 24 May 1988, this was Frehley’s most prolific year. For the 3rd LP Ace dropped the band name & went solo for “Trouble Walkin” released on 13 Oct 1989, thus fulfilling his Megaforce contract.

The 1st time I heard Ace “Live” was a radio broadcast of the 29 Jun 1987 show in Milwaukee, WI. @ Summerfest, where Todd Howarth sang “Love Me Right” instead of Ace. The 1st time I met him was at an “In-Store: Meet & Greet” @ ‘Zia Records’ in Tempe, AZ.

I was able to ask him a few questions:
RLS: “Do you still have your massive guitar collection?”
AF: “No, I sold a lot of them off years ago, it just got to be too much”
AF: “Where did you get these ’73 photos with the Spider Web backdrop? Do you know I still own my 1st set of leathers (the Charlie Brown ones)”
RLS: “Do you ever miss playing with the other 3?”
AF: “I just played with Paul & Gene in New York (26 Jun 1988 @ Limelight) & Criss joined me on Drums in L.A. (23 Aug 1987 in L.A. @ Wiltern)
RLS: “Did you have a good time? Do you think you’ll ever rejoin them?”
AF: “Yea, you know, I did, but, I’m not sure about that”
RLS: “Do you think your 1st lead vocal for KISS “Queen For A Day” from ‘Rock And Roll Over’ will ever be released?”
AF: “How do you know about that? no comment”
RLS: “Read in a magazine at the time, back in ’77”
AF: “Where’d you get this promo video (for “DoYa”)?”
RLS: “I work in the biz, you’re wearing a leather jacket on the beach wasn’t it hot?”
AF: No, it was winter, it was freezing out”
AF: “Do you have my new album (on Vinyl)?”
RLS: I have the vinyl back home; I just brought the cassette today”
AF: “Some girl asked me to sign her dog, I’ve never done that before (laughing)”
RLS: “You seem to play Phoenix every tour”
AF: “Regan & I like to catch some holes (of golf) when we tour”

Ace picked out a couple ‘Cheap Trick’ CDs & my sister Michelle took my photo with him. We then saw him that night, so here’s the set list:

It would be a while before Ace released anything, the next title was a *VHS “Ace Vision “Vol 1” in 1994, put out by Ace himself sold only at his concerts. The next time I saw Ace was for 2 shows in a row on 31 Oct 1994 Mon in Minneapolis @ Mirage & then again on 2 Nov 1994 Wed in Des Moines @ Safari Club. While Ace was back in ‘KISS’ 2 different tribute CDs were put out “Spacewalk” on 21 May 1996 with “Take Me To The City” by: Ace from his

Mar 1995 Demos: 1. Sister 2. Don’t Wanna Lose You 3. Take Me To The City 4. Too Far Gone from the album Ace was working on before the KISS Reunion Tours

Then followed by; “Return Of The Comet” in 1997 with the songs “Animal” & “Back On The Streets” by: Richie Scarlet from the 1984 Demos. Also while Ace was still in ‘KISS’ Regan took the opportunity to release 2 different compilations, the 1st being “12 Picks” on 8 Apr 1997, followed by; “Loaded Deck” on 20 Jan 1998, & sometime later “Greatest Hits Live” on 24 Jan 2006. Ace took some time off so the next time I was able to see him was 8 May 2008 Thurs in Minneapolis @ 1st Ave. not quite a year later he released his 5th solo album “Anomaly” on 15 Sep 2009.

Ace’s next release was a *DVD “Behind The Player” in 2010, followed by his 6th solo album “Space Invader” on 19 Aug 2014. By the way Ace started his new solo tour on 13 Nov 2014 in Brunswick, NJ.

David Bowie: Changes 1962- 79

Ch-ch-ch Changes …
Time may change me; David Bowie: 1962- 1979
“BUZZ” Newspaper Article: #43-dB Oct- Nov 2014
By: RLSchwinden aka: MrZer0

When I 1st heard David Bowie, I saw him on The “Midnight Special” in Aug 1973 performing the “1980 Floor Show” & singing “Time” I just loved the chorus, though I thought Bowie looked really unusual. Then I heard “Fame” just like everybody else did, because Lennon wrote the lyrics & played guitar on the record, but when I heard the ‘Bay City Rollers’ play “Rebel Rebel” on TV one Sat. Morning on a Kroft TV show. I decided I had to get on the case.

He was Born David Robert Jones 8 Jan 1947 in Brixton UK. In 1962 while in school he was punched in the left eye leaving the pupil permanently dilated, adding to his unusual look. In 1956 His Father Heywood brought home some American R&R 45s, which inspired young Davie to take up piano, guitar & saxophone & was a member of 6 different bands these being ’Konrads’ ‘King Bees’ ‘Manish Boys’ ‘Lower Third’ ‘Riot Squad’ ‘The Buzz’ releasing some 9 singles from 1962- 67

Sometime in 1964 he formed the “Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Long Haired Men” & appeared on the BBC show “Tonight” in Nov of that year. Tired of being confused with the most popular Monkee, Davy Jones, in early ’67 changes his name to David Bowie, to set himself apart from the other famous Jones.

Bowie’s big break comes in ”Space Oddity” a #15 Billboard Hit, that was released on 15 Jul 1969 just 5 days prior to the ‘Apollo 11’ launch. Followed by 4 other Top Billboard Hits; “Changes” #41 in Jan ’72, “Young Americans” #28 in Feb ’75, “Fame” #1 in Jul ’75, “Golden Years” #10 in Nov ’75, Bowie released a whooping 37 singles from 1969-79.

Bowie released 13 albums from 1967-79 starting with “David Bowie” in Jun’67 on Deram, then “Space Oddity” on Mercury in Nov’69, followed by “Man Who Sold The World” in Nov’70, his 4th LP & my personal favorite “Hunky Dory” in Dec’71 & his 1st on RCA, with “Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust” in Jun’72, where upon he announces his retirement on tour for this LP on stage in London in Jul’73. Here is the setlist from a show on that same tour.

(My band ‘MrZERo’ performs “Moonage Daydream” in their live set to this day)

In 1973 he releases 2 LPs “Aladdin Sane” in Apr & “Pin-Ups” in Oct. In Apr’74 he releases “Diamond Dogs” I spoke to Ansley Dunbar (Aynsley Thomas Dunbar: 10 Jan 1946; Liverpool UK) the Drummer for this LP in the Fall of ’97. Dunbar: “We never really knew what song we working on, ‘til the album came out & we read the credits, David would constantly change things from day to day & change arrangements, from session to session” Bowie’s 9th LP is “Young Americans” released in Mar’75, followed by “Station To Station” in Jan’76, & then “Low” a year later in Jan’77 with “Heroes” later the same year in Oct. his last LP of the 70s is “Lodger” in May’79.

Not just confined to music he also appeared in these films; “Man Who Fell To Earth” 1976, “Just A Gigolo” 1978, “The Hunger” 1983, “Into The Night” 1985, “Absolute Beginners” 1986, & “Labyrinth” 1986.

“Nerd Is The Word”

“BUZZ Newspaper Article

Oct 2014 (#42-tM) By: RLSchwinden aKa: MrZer0

It’s sad to me that something as great as the local Minneapolis legends ‘The Trashmen’ has to be remembered from something as inane as ‘The Family Guy’ TV cartoon…

> Discovering The Bird: 1972 <

How I found out about “The Bird” was I was looking through my Dad’s record collection, in our Band/ Music room in our basement, in Sioux City, Iowa, the summer 1972, my Dad had just returned to playing drums in the Sioux City, Iowa based band ‘The Boyz (from Sioux City)’ which evolved into ‘Bonesteel’ not long after that. My Dad had not played drums since 1967, when his left arm was shattered by Vietnamese bullet on his 2nd tour of Nam. I was looking through my Dad’s records & found the 1st Trashmen vinyl record with Steve Wahrer’s face scribbled out & my Dad’s name signed over Steve’s head with an arrow pointing to his (Steve’s) body. I asked my Dad “Why did you do this” My Dad responded “Because, once that was me … ”

I asked “How was that ?” he replied “Well I went to Osseo- Brooklyn Park & those guys went to the next school over, the band I was in used to open for them at the local Sock-Hops when I was a teenybopper, then one day, Summer ’63, their drummer (Steve) hurt his hand or something like that, so they asked me to play the drums while he would come out & sing “Surfin Bird” & some other songs like that, so I played the drums for them” I then asked “Are you on this album” he replied “No, not that one , but I am on some live shows, Mike Jann recorded for them (Trashmen) at the time, well, that’s what  they told me anyway, I don’t know if that stuff ever got released or not, as I was shipped to Viet Nam not long after that, &  lost track of that kind of thing” Unfortunately when my Dad & Mom split one time in 1974, my Dad sold his drums & guitar & threw out much of his stuff he owned from before he was married, including His ‘Trashmen’ record.

When I moved to Phoenix in 1981, to follow my musical dream, I moved in with my Dad’s brother Mike Schwinden (3 years younger than Billy). My Uncle Mike, suggested “You might consider getting a real job in the meantime, while you’re waiting for your music career to take off” I asked “Why” he said ”Well look at your Dad he was  in the real deal, playing in bands with the big leagues like The Trashmen, back when they were big & he chose to pursue the Psychotherapy field, because so few actually make in the music business” So my Uncle Mike verified what my Dad had said several years earlier.

> Cyclone: 1957 <
Anthony ‘Tony’ Andreason (b.1943 a Henry High School student) from Minneapolis, on Guitar & Vocals, meets Steven ‘Steve’ Wahrer (1942: Keokuk, Iowa, R.I.P.23 Jan 1989) from Robbinsdale on Drums & Vocals  @ the Crystal Coliseum sometime around 1957  then the duo join ‘Jim Thaxter & The Travelers’ in 1961 this band contained the members Jim Thaxter: Vocals & Bass, Tom Diehl: Piano with Andreason & Wahrer, with Dallas “Dal” Winslow: (20 Dec 1941; Burwell, NE.) from Robbinsdale on Guitar. The band is based out of Brooklyn Center, playing venues such as Bill’s Roller Rink in Anoka & Theodore Wirth Golf Course in Golden Valley bringing in about $8.oo per performance in 1960. This band records a 45 Single on Arill Records #73065, “Cyclone b/w Sally Jo” about 200 copies are pressed.

> Trashmen Blues: 1962 <

The trio of Wahrer, Andreason & Winslow branch off in early 1962 due to differences in musical direction with Thaxter. They get Don Woody on Bass, rehearsing in Winslow’s garage. The local artist; Tony Kyray had a 45 single out at the time “Trashmen Blues” while practicing in Winslow’s garage one time Wahrer offers “This is what we should call ourselves” Then at the next gig in Mar ’62 @ Brooklyn Center HighWahrer shows up with ‘The Trashmen’ painted on his kick-drum head, & ‘The Trashmen’ are born, later in ’62 Woody decides to leave to join his brother’s band ‘The Startones’ An audition is held in late ’62Bob Reed: (17 Jun 1942; Oaks, North Dakota) shows up & is hired to play Bass. In the summer of ’63 the band take a trip to So. Cal. & get hooked on “Surf Music”

> Funniest Sound I Ever Heard: 1963 <

The band’s Drummer/ Vocalist Wahrer combined 2 songs He had heard ‘The Sorensen Brothers’ a California band, play at a gig they both performed in Amery,WI. @ Woodley’s Country Dam, the songs being “The Bird’s The Word” & “Pa Pa Ooh Mow Mow” by the California doo-wop group ‘The Rivingtons’, who in 1962 released an album on Liberty Records called “Doin’ The Bird” which was a type of dance at the time, although the song “Bird Is The Word b/w I’m Losing My Grip” is not on this LP but was a 45 single released sometime after the LP was released.

Andreason: “We were backstage at a ballroom called ‘Chub’s’ in Maple Grove, Steve used to do these funny voices & had come up with this song, he kind of taught it to us on the spot, we didn’t really rehearse the song much more than that, on stage he would nod to us for the chord changes, we played live that very night 3 maybe 4 times, once in each set”.

A local DJ from WDGY Radio “Wizard Of Wax” Bill Diehl was the Emcee at a show where he heard The Trashmen perform Wahrer’s new song, Diehl was positive this would be a hit & convinced the band the record a demo of the song with George Garrett (who was the engineer on most SOMA recordings) in his recording studio in the basement of his recordshop “Nic’o’lake Records”, a 2nd shorter version was recorded @ Kay Bank Studios on 2541 Nicollet Ave MPLS. Wahrer once said “I could not drum fast enough in the studio for that song, so we recorded it, speed it up, & then I sang over that”, & then 50 one sided promo copies were pressed & sent out to local radio stations, in addition too, Diehl entered the song into local “The Battle of the Bands” & The Trashmen won!

> Susie Baby: 1963 <

The band signed with SOMA Records, a local Record Label started by: Amos Heilicher (1921- Aug 2011) & his brother Danny in 1954, by 1959 the label had Bobby Vee, & later many other local artists like: “The Fendermen” “The Castaways” “The Gestures” “The Del Counts” “Dave Dudley” & “The Underbeats” (who evolved into GYPSY) Amos eventually sold/closed SOMA in 1967 to focus on his “Musicland” chain of recordstores, a friend of mine worked with Amos he had this to say “He was a shrewd businessman & sometimes not a very nice guy”

The band’s 1st Single 45 was “Surfin Bird b/w King Of The Surf” the “B-Side” written by Larry LaPole who worked for the ‘Star Tribune’ the local newspaper & had written a number of country songs & is now the new Co-Writer for the band. “Surfin Bird” spent 13 weeks on the chart, then it hit #4 on 25 Jan 1964, this Single 45 sold 38,000 copies in the 1st week alone! There is a rare version on ‘Lana Records’ #137“Surfin Bird” was later bumped by “She Loves You” from those newcomers ‘The Beatles’.

> Tube City: 1964 <

The band’s 1st & only Vinyl LP “The Trashmen” #GA-200 was released on13 Nov 1963 on Garrett Records Dist. By SOMA & retailing for $2.88, back then 45 singles were .98 cents. This LP contains 12 tracks while the CD version contains 16 tracks @ 30:39 min. The back cover of the LP shows the band playing ‘Mr. Lucky’s’ in MPLSTony: “Back then we were paid .03 cents per album sold, but we didn’t always get that payment, that’s the music biz, for you”

When I asked Dal about My Dad Billy Schwinden: originally  from Wait Park (30 Oct 1944- 30 Apr 2003), but went to Osseo- Brooklyn Park High School, who said he played with The TRASHMEN back in 1961- 62, before My Dad went to Viet Nam in ’64, *Dal Winslow: said “Well it’s possible, we went through so many people back then when Steve & I went to Robbinsdale High, so if he (My Dad) says he did, well then he probably did, what is his name again? What was the opening band he played with back then? However, I do not remember a time when, Steve hurt his hand and couldn’t play, I am quite certain your Dad’s band opened for us, sometime in ’61-62, before the Single (Surfin Bird) broke in ‘63, in those days there were many “Battle of the Bands” types of events back then, after the single broke we played all nighters by ourselves.”

As “Surfin Bird” was in the Top 10 on the charts, the TV Show ‘American Bandstand’ wanted them on the their show, odd thing is the show would only pay for 1 plane ticket to Philadelphia where the TV show was filmed, since Wahrer sang lead on the hit, even though he was the drummer, he was chosen to go. Steve was the only 1 to appear on the TV show on 4 Jan 1964 performing the “Bird Dance” & singing to a Toucan prop with lighted flashing eyes, followed by a 2 minute interview with Dick Clark at the end of the performance. The Rivingtons’ managers informed them of the Top 10 song that seemed to be written from 2 of their own songs, after a successful lawsuit, later pressings changed the writer credit from Wahrer to “Al Frazier, Carl White, Sonny Harris, and Turner Wilson Jr.”

> A-Bone: 1964-65 <

The band’s 2nd 45 single to be released, which Steve refers to on ‘American Band Stand’ is “Bird Dance Beat b/w A-Bone” GA-4003 the “B” side again written by LaPole, this 45 spent 7 weeks on the charts reaching #30 in 7 Mar 1964. This 45 was released on ‘Stateside Records’ overseas. Bob Reed“I believe our 2nd single went to #30, on the national charts.” Followed by their 3rd single “Bad News b/w On The Move” GA-4005, which reached #124 on the charts in the Summer of 1964. Followed by these also released in 1964: “Peppermint Man b/w New Generation” GA-4010 & “Whoa Dad b/w Walking My Baby” GA- 4012 & “Dancing With Santa b/w Real Live Doll” GA-4013, released with a Picture Sleeve & the last 45 on the Garrett Record LabelWinslow: “I kept the booking records; we did 292 one-nighters in 1964 & almost as many in 1965 at 270 shows”

Things begin to slow down for The Trashmen in 1965 the 7th 45 Single to be released by the band, now on ‘Bear Records’ by Lieberman Ent. out of Bloomington, MN “Keep Your Hands Off My Baby b/w Lost Angel” Bear #1966. Their 8th 45 single is on yet a different label than before “Bird ’65 b/w Ubangi Stomp” Argo Records #5516. A “Hard Rock Casino” opened in Sioux City, Iowa in Aug 2014, in the entry way, there is a giant concert poster for The Trashmen on Sat 29 May 1965 admission $1.50, when I told Dal about this he was very excited to see a photo of it, so I sent him one, later the next day.

In 2002 Sundazed released “Teen Trot” This CD contains 25 tracks @ 1hr & 13min recorded live on Sun 22 Aug 1965 in Ellsworth, WI @ Proch’s Popular Ballroom with about 700 people in attendance paying a ticket price of $1.50, to see 3 sets of 40min each

> Lost Angel: 1966- 67 <

As The Beatles continue to forever change the music scene of the 60’s, there is not as much demand for Pre-Beatles “Surf Music” The Trashman release their 9th 45 Single, now on ‘Tribe Records’ #8315 “Hanging On Me b/w Same Lines” in 1966, as well as their live performances drop 24% to 200 shows this year, still considered quite successful for a regional surf band from the Twin Cities, it’s just not the same as their “heyday” just 2 years earlier. They did manage to record several live shows for a possible “Live” LP, but these recordings remained in the can for over 2 decades.

“Live Bird ’65- ’67” 1990 Sundazed this CD contains 17 tracks @45:59 min
Recorded from several shows; those  being
8 Aug 1965 in Ellsworth,WI, @ Proaches Popular Ballroom,
17 Sep 1966 in Sauk Centre, MN, @  The Home School For Girls,
20 & 26 Sep 1966 in St. Paul, MN @ the Whiskey A Go-Go
1 Jan 1967 in Marshfield, WI @ Airway Bar

A concert program from the time reads: “Here come The Exciting Trashmen Presenting Sensational Sounds of Past & Present”  3848 2nd Street N.E. Minneapolis 21 Minn. Phone: 788-2040

*Dal Winslow: “Back in the early 60s we would play 3 to 4 hours per night with a 15 min break between 1 hour sets, we would play about 25 songs per set, because most songs, back then, clocked in at about 2 & ½ min. and especially Steve hated to do the same song twice in one night, especially “Surfin Bird” as he put so much of himself into that song, his favorite was “Jerry Lee Lewis” so Steve knew almost every single obscure song by Jerry Lee. One time we got to meet Jerry Lee Lewis backstage at a Concert, when Steve asked him “Will you be doing “Breathless” tonight?” Lewis responded “I’d rather try to climb up a greased brickwall” so Steve decided if Jerry Lee was no longer playing this song then we shouldn’t either.”

My friend Larry S. saw The Trashmen in concert the summer of ’66 “I used to drive a 50 Suzuki motorbike, I wore a Sonny & Cher type hat & vest, with Beatle boots, man, we thought we were something back then, The Trashmen  played the Paradise Ballroom in Wiconia, MN. it was a really  nice day, there was a really big crowd there to see them , there was so many people there you couldn’t really walk around, they were really good, as I recall, the band wore collarless suits like the Beatles had wore a couple years earlier, I remember being surprised the drummer  sang most of the hits, although he seemed to pause to catch his breath, during the big hit, someone told me that’s the way the song goes, also the drummer was blond, the other 3 up front weren’t”

In 1967 the band release their 10th & final 45 Single “Green, Green Backs Back Home b/w Address Enclosed” now on the Metrobeat Label #7927, their 5th record label in just 2 years. On Fri 28 April 1967 they play in Renville @ Palms Ballroom for $1.50 per ticket. The band finish up the year playing several weekend shows @ The Gables on Lyndale & Franklin in MPLS. Finally 1967 sees the end of The Trashmen, as they disband to pursue other interests, as “Sgt. Pepper” is released in June ’67 & forever changes the music business.

> The Sleeper: 1982 <

In 1982 the band reform & start to play selected local shows, including some recording up to 1988, unfortunately Wahrer dies in 1989Tony’s brother Mark takes over on Drums followed by Reed’s son Robin to take over for Mark.

At some point this album is released “Trashmen 20 Biggest Hits” Garrett #300 on blue vinyl LP, more than likely in the mid 90s. Andreason: “We were lucky enough to own our own Master Tapes so in 1990 we made a deal with Sundazed to put out our recordings on  CD” These 2 CDs are released “Great Lost Trashmen Album” 1990 Sundazed with 16 tracks @ 35:55min followed by: “Tube City: The Best Of The Trashmen” 1992 Sundazed  contains 20 tracks @ 46:46 min. In 1994 on NPR Records “Comicbook Collector” is released, this album is recorded from 1988, this being the last recordings with Wahrer through 1993 with Andreason’s brother on drums, this CD contains 11 tracks @ 37:55min:  featuring the title song along with “Love’s Made A Fool Of You” & “Keep Your Hands Off My Baby as well as several other re-recordings of mid 60s standards.

Sundazed continues to release CD & Vinyl for the band, “Bird Call” a 4 CD Boxset in 1998 contains 80 tracks total recorded from May 1961 to Jan 1967. A vinyl release, (highly unusual for the time period) “Bird Dance Beat” 1999 LPGA- 300 contains 14 tracks that could have been the band’s 2nd LP release

> Whoa Dad:  1999 <

When I moved to St. Paul in 1999 I saw The Trashmen were out playing again, so I called my Dad & asked him about his days as a drummer back in the early 60s in  the Twin Cities, he said “Ah yes, the music of my youth, what a fun time that was growing up during the origins of Rock N Roll, I have a lot of fond memories from that time”

However he never spoke of this subject much beyond that. Perplexed I asked my Mom “Why is it Dad would not speak of anything specific from when he played drums in bands in his youth” My Mom answered “Your Dad graduated from High School early to enlist in the Marines to go and fight for his country in the Viet Nam war, he was wounded 4 times during his 2 tours of fighting over there, & saw many atrocities, he does not care to remember, or to even think back to anything past what he is doing today, which is working on his Doctorate”

However as I mentioned back in 1972 my Dad did play drums for ‘The Boyz (from Sioux City)’ Then in1977 my Dad played drums with the Jackson, Mississippi based ‘Baker’s Dozen’ who had a 45 single out at the time. The last time my Dad showed any interest in music was in 1980 he started learning guitar & lastly in 1981 he played percussion a couple times with his co-worker, Tim a Bass player.

My Dad passed away in ’03. In 2013 The Trashmen release this Vinyl EP “I’m A Trashman b/w Torture”/”Bop A Lena”/”Brewski” in Jun 2013 the band play the “Back To The 50’s” Show near my shop. This year they release their 1st new album in years “Bringing Back The Trash” By: Deke Dickerson & The Trashmen 2014 Major Label has 16 tracks of new & covers songs on this CD & LP. I finally was able to see (setlist below) & meet The Trashmen in person on:

“Nilsson Schmilsson, what’s a Schmilsson ?”
“BUZZ Newspaper Article Aug-Sep 2014 (#41-hN)
By: RLSchwinden: aka Oblio

When I was a kid living on Douglas St. on the Northside of Sioux City, my Uncle Jeff lived with us, the year was 1971 & Uncle Jeff wanted to watch a new cartoon movie of the week “The Point” by one (Harry) Nilsson, back in the days of 3, sometimes 4 TV channels, everyone gathered around the (usually) one TV in the house & watched the movie of the week together, & so we did … & I loved it! For awhile I even called myself “Oblio” and so here is the story of “Nilsson”

> Daddy’s Song: 1964 <

Harry Edward Nilsson III (15 Jun 1941 – 15 Jan 1994 Agoura Hills, CA) otherwise known as just “Nilsson” was born in Brooklyn, NYC his Grandparents were Swedish circus performers in the aerial ballet, his father left when Harry was just 3, as a kid Harry moved around a lot, a stay with his Uncle John is where he honed his vocal abilities. As he got older he was a natural when it came to numbers & computers, so Harry ended up working at bank on the night shifts & starting in 1962 worked during the day recording song demos for $5.oo a recording.

Harry started releasing 45 singles in 1963 as “Bo Pete” on the Spindletop/ Mercury Label the songs being “Baa Baa Blacksheep” & “Do You Wanna Have Some Fun” & another “Donna, I Understand b/w Wig Job” under the name “Johnny Niles” which lead to a signing with Tower/ Capitol Records where he released 4 singles starting in 1964. This was the start of Nilsson’s music career, which saw him then release some 36 single 45s & 17 LPs from 1963 to 1980. “Spotlight on Nilsson” was released in 1966 on Tower Records, now billed as Nilsson, however he stayed on @ the night shift at the bank.

>Good Old Desk: 1967< In Mar 1967 when The MONKEES decided to cover "Cuddly Toy”, released a full month before Nilsson's version, along with "Story Of Rock N Roll" (released by: The TURTLES) & “Mr. Richland's Favorite Song" &"Good Times" Nilsson actually sat in on the recording sessions providing piano & vocals for these tracks & then later, on "Daddy's Song" this gave Nilsson the "Big Break" he had been looking for, as Nilsson was signed to RCA Records in 1967. The Monkees went on to record many other Nilsson songs such as; "Together" in 1969, a little later Nesmith gone solo covered "Rainmaker" in 1971. Then Dolenz recorded "Daybreak" in 1974 for the film "Son Of Dracula", for Dolenz's 1st solo CD in 1991 he recorded "Moonbeam" & "Remember" & then in 1994 "Me & My Arrow" Dolenz remained a close friend of Harry's until his death. On a solo tour in Jan 1999 Jones performed "Nobody Cares About The Railroad Anymore" When Nilsson was signed to RCA he began his collaboration with George Tipton from 1967- 1971, creating that "early" Nilsson sound production, 1 of the stipulations in Nilsson's RCA contract was that he have his own office, he answered his own phones, & as a gimmick decided he would never perform live, a decision he later regretted, although he did make TV appearances to promote his albums. Nilsson's 2nd LP (1st for RCA) was "Pandemonium Shadow Show" released in Dec 1967 with a nod to The BEATLES by covering 2 of their songs "You Can't Do That" & "She's Leaving Home" as well as his version of "Cuddly Toy" he appeared on the TV show "It's Happening" in Aug 1968 . His 3rd LP "Aerial Ballet" was released in Nov 1968, the title a reference to his grandparents. Though Nilsson did not have a hit off this LP the band "Three Dog Night" did with the song "One" a #1 Billboard Hit in Oct 1968.He made some TV appearances on "Beat Club" Oct 1968 & "Playboy After Dark" Feb 1969 to promote this release. > Garbage Can Ballet: 1969 <

Nilsson’s 4th LP was 1 of many shifts he would do in his career, a soundtrack to the Otto Preminger film “Skidoo” in Dec 1968, Nilsson made a cameo as a prison guard. Harry made an appearance on the TV Show “Ghost & Mrs. Muir” in Mar 1969. Then Superstardom arrives in the form of another film & soundtrack, that being the United Artists film “Midnight Cowboy” in May 1969 Nilsson scores a hit with Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin” a #6 Billboard Hit in Aug 1969. This same month he releases his LP “Harry” (Aug 1969) with the #34 Hit “I Guess The Lord Must Live In NYC” in Nov 1969, this song was originally submitted by Nilsson for “Midnight Cowboy” the following month Sep 1969 he wrote the theme song “Best Friend” for a new TV show on ABC “Courtship Eddie’s Father”

1970 starts off with a bang when Nilsson wins a Grammy in Jan 1970 for “Midnight Cowboy’s” “Everybody’s Talkin” & Harry ushers in the new decade with yet another twist, as a famous song-writer himself he records an entire LP of another song-writers material (today they are known as tribute CDs) “Nilsson Sings Newman” in Feb 1970, with Randy Newman himself on piano. Nilsson appears on the “Smothers Brothers Summer Show” in Jul 1970 to promote this LP.

> Think About Your Troubles: 1971 <

Another round of success comes in the form of a soundtrack, Nilsson “I was on acid looking out the window at the trees & the houses & it seemed everything had a point” he wrote & recorded the LP & TV film “The Point!” the soundtrack released in Jan 1971 & the TV film was aired in Feb 1971 on ABC by: Murakami-Wolf Productions with Dustin Hoffman providing the narration for the initial airing, later replaced by: Ringo Starr for the VHS release. “Me & My Arrow” becomes a #34 hit in Mar 1971. For some reason Harry remixes his 1st, 2 LPs into the best of: “Aerial Pandemonium Ballet” in 1971.

1971 proves to be Harry’s year as he follows up with his biggest commercial success “Nilsson Schmilsson” released in Nov 1971. In another “remix” move Harry was one of the very few artists to oversee a Quad 8-Track (4 channel stereo) remixing from the master tapes to be somewhat different than LP version, intentionally! (Nesmith also did this).
This LP yielded 3 Top 40 Hits starting with “Without You” a #1 hit in Dec 1971, a Badfinger song from Nov 1970, followed by “Jump Into The Fire” a #27 hit in Mar 1972 & then “Coconut” a #8 hit in Jun 1972. A TV Show was created & aired on the BBC “The Music Of Nilsson” in Jan 1972.

Nilsson’s 8th LP “Son of Schmilsson” is released in Jul 1972, spawning the #23 hit “Spaceman” in Sep 1972. Another twist the song “Joy” was released under the name “Buck Earle” on RCA’s (Green) Country label.

> Nevertheless: 1973 <

After having conquered the “Pop” music charts, Harry makes another switch; he records an LP of old 1920s & 30s songs, titled “A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night” in Jun 1973. Now while Harry did not tour, he did make this TV Special “A Little Touch Of Schmilsion In The Night” @ the CTS Studios, BBC Television Theatre recorded Mar 1973. Here is the setlist:

As Time Goes By
Lazy Moon
Me and My Gal
It Had To Be You
Always
Makin’ Whoopee
I’m Always Chasing Rainbows
I Wonder Who’s Kissing Her Now
What’ll I Do
Nevertheless
This Is All I Ask
Over The Rainbow
As Time Goes By

In 1973 Yoko kicked John Lennon out & he moved L.A. where he struck up a (drinking) friendship with Nilsson, & from time to time included Ringo Starr, Micky Dolenz, Keith Moon & Alice Cooper, when they weren’t getting into trouble they occasionally worked on music. Nilsson’s 3rd soundtrack “Son of Dracula” was released in Apr 1974 (without Dolenz) the single “Daybreak” hit #39 in Apr 1974. The film was put out by Apple Corps starring Nilsson as “Count Downe” with Ringo Starr as “Merlin” & as The Count’s Band; John Bonham, Peter Frampton, Keith Moon & Bobby Keyes.

About this time Nilsson took to including a message inside his LPs to the fans to write the Government to petition to let Lennon stay in the USA (Lennon had some drug charges on his record) Lennon was into “Primal Screaming Therapy” & took Harry along 1 time where Harry ruptured a vocal cord, he hid it from Lennon while jamming with Lennon & McCartney in L.A. sometime in 1974. Lennon & Nilsson did manage to put out an LP “Pussy Cats” this was released in Aug 1974.

> Easier For Me: 1975 <

Taking some time off to rest his voice Nilsson’s 13th LP “Duit on Mon Dei” British slang for “Do It On Monday” was released in Mar 1975, & did make an appearance on the TV show “Midnight Special” in Nov 1975 to promote this LP. With no real hits on the last LP Harry released 2 LPs in 1976 “Sandman” in Jan & “That’s the Way It Is” in Jun 1976. Because Harry did not tour he had plenty of time to record so his 16th LP “Knnillssonn” came out in Jul 1977 followed by another appearance on “Midnight Special” in Nov 1977.

Meanwhile the reformed team of David Jones (singing 7) & Micky Dolenz (singing 2) put together a Broadway musical of “The Point” releasing an LP in 1977 on MCA (UK only) adding 7 other Nilsson songs to expand the storyline of “The Point”

The late 70s saw Harry taking some time off until after a 3 year hiatus he released what he considered to be his best LP yet “Flash Harry” was released in 1980 followed by his 4th soundtrack “Popeye” in Dec 1980 a Paramount Pictures Production. Nilsson was deeply affected by the murder of John Lennon & effectively dropped out of the limelight as a “Retired Musician” & became a member of the Coalition To Stop Gun Violence” & in 1982 he recorded & released a 45 single sold only @ “Beatlefest” titled “With A Bullet” followed by another 45 Single “Loneliness” released in 1984.

Nilsson did manage to make an appearance on 25 Nov 1984 @ The Westin Bonaventure Hotel L.A. CA. probably for a “Beatlefest”
Performing:
You Can’t Do That
Give Peace a Chance
Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?

> How Long Can Disco Go On: 1989 <

In the late 80s as Vinyl effectively ended (for 15 solid years) a CD “All Time Greatest Hits” was released in 1989. Then amazingly in 1990 Nilsson was broke due to a financial adviser who embezzled from him, the guilty party only severed a couple years in prison. Nilsson’s last live appearance was on 1 Sep 1992 with Ringo’s All Starr Band to sing “Without You” The early 90s found Harry over-weight & in poor health & almost completely out of sight.

I started to notice how many artists had been covering Nilsson songs over the past few years or so, for example for his 1st Solo CD, Robin Zander: “CHEAP TRICK” cut a cover of “Jump Into The Fire” in Jul 1993 when I met him in Omaha the following year, I asked him how he came to cover that song & what did Harry have to say about it: Zander “Why? Because I love Harry Nilsson, that’s why. I didn’t get to talk to him about it; I just had to pay him (laughs)”
Harry had a heart-attack in Feb 93, which motivated him to go to work on a new studio CD with Mark Hudson, & working on a retrospective 2 CD collection of his RCA works. Harry died of heart failure 15 Jan 1994 his “Personal Best” 2CD was released in Jan 1995. Earlier this year at our Shop (Mr. Zero’s) a customer asked me for “Schmilsson” as it was a “long running family joke” she wanted to buy the LP to hang on her wall, so this inspired me to write this article.

Buddy Miles: 1969

“BUZZ Newspaper Article” Jul- Aug 2014 (#40-bM)
By: RLSchwinden aka: MrZer0

One of my favorite LPs is Jimi Hendrix “Band Of Gypsys” yet another record my friend Eric turned me onto just after high school, I was fully aware of Jimi, but unaware of this “Live” LP from 1970. It was such a different record for Jimi & the key to this, is the rhythm section of Buddy Miles & Billy Cox. So I looked into this Buddy Miles, turns out he was from my area near Sioux City. It would be impossible to cover all of Buddy’s accomplishments, so I am going to cover the ones, I found of the most interest to me & hopefully you.

“Buddy” George Allen Miles, Jr. (5 Sep 1947 -26 Feb 2008: Austin, TX.) started playing drums at an early age, in his home town of Omaha, but moved to Sioux Falls, SD. while he was still in Jr. High School, to live with his Aunt, who gave him the nickname “Buddy” after the famous jazz drummer Buddy Rich. My friend Bobby Berge (drummer for Zephyr, Tommy Bolin Band) went to 9th grade at Whittier Jr. high School with Buddy in Sioux Falls, “Hanging out after school playing Pinball & going to the movies” & eventually became the backup drummer for “The Buddy Miles Express” from 1976- 1977. Buddy was a natural on the drums, so much that he eventually joined his father’s jazz band before his teens. Buddy’s father George Sr. was a bass player to many famous jazz legends such as Basie, Ellington, Gordon & Parker, Buddy once described his own style of drumming as “Gut Bucket” but much more than that, Buddy was a fabulous R&B vocalist, worth noting, while Buddy played Drums right handed, he played guitar left handed.

> Electric Flag: 1967 < Buddy was a backing musician for a variety of big names in the early 60s including "The DELFONICS" & “Wilson Pickett", in 1967 Miles moved to Chicago & joined Mike Bloomfield's "ELECTRIC FLAG" along side; Barry Goldberg, Nick Gravenites & Harvey Brooks, The band made their debut in 1967 at the "Monterey International Pop Festival" as well as providing the soundtrack to the 1967 film "The Trip". The band released 2 LPs "A Long Time Comin" in Mar 1968 & "An American Music Band" later in 1968, however the band also broke up in late 1968. There was a "Best Of" released in 1971 & a reunion LP in 1974 "Band Kept Playing" the band also released three 45 Singles. While still in the "Electric Flag" Miles became friends with Peter Tork of "The MONKEES" though mutual friend Stephen Stills, Miles sat in on drums for a recording session with Tork in Jan- Feb 1968. The MONKEES were planning a 2 LP record with 6 songs from each MONKEE. Miles played drums on these, 1st recorded & "Un-used" MONKEES songs “Do I Have To Do This All Over Again”, “Can You Dig It”, “Lady's Baby” & “Seegar's Theme”. Later after the breakup of "The ELECTRIC FLAG" Miles sang Lead Vocals & played Drums on "Listen To The Band" for a live for TV broadcast "33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee" recorded in Nov 1968, Miles can be seen in this film. > Them Changes: 1968 < In late 1968 just as the "ELECTRIC FLAG" had broken up Miles formed the "Buddy Miles Express" with guitarist Jim McCarty, this band released 6 LPs on Mercury Records starting with "Expressway To Your Skull" in 1968, followed by: "Electric Church" in 1969 with 4 songs produced by Jimi Hendrix (27 Nov 1972: Seattle -18 Sep 1970 London). Buddy had met Hendrix at a show in Canada sometime in 1964, when both were still backing musicians for other artists. This production lead to Miles joining Hendrix to form the "Band Of Gypsys" with Hendrix's fellow 101st Airborne Division pal Billy Cox (William Cox; 18 Oct 1971: Wheeling, W. Virginia) on Bass, who Hendrix met in 1961 at Fort Ord, CA., the 2 played with Larry Lee in "The Casuals" before Hendrix was discharged from the military in Jun 1962. Miles took some time away from the "Express" to work with Hendrix on "Band Of Gypsys" though the "Band Of Gypsy's" only performed 5 concerts; 2 shows on 31 Dec 1969 & 1 Jan 1970 for another 2 shows & then a 5th show on 28 Jan 1970, & released only 1 "Live" LP on Capitol Records to fulfill a lawsuit Hendrix had lost to Ed Chalpin of PPX Productions, this was last LP to be released while Hendrix was alive, “Band Of Gypsys” did release one 45 Single "Izabella b/w Steppen Stone” in Apr 1970, Reprise Records #0905, (a Non-LP) personally I feel this was a great move for Hendrix & Miles, while the drums were toned down from Mitchell's jazz style, Miles added the vocals I felt lacked in previous “Experience” recordings. There was a 2nd LP "Band Of Gypsys 2" released in 1986 & "Live At Fillmore East" CD released in 1999 & a 2nd CD "Baggy's Rehearsal Sessions" in 2002. Here’s the set list for the 4th Show performed by: “BOG” > 1 Jan 1970 @ Filmore East, Manhattan, NYC: 2nd Show < Stone Free Changes Power to Love Message of Love Earth Blues Machine Gun Voodoo Child (Slight Return) We Gotta Live Together Wild Thing Hey Joe Purple Haze https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ytnoKWxU_k From about Mar 1969 to Mar 1970 Hendrix, Miles & Cox recorded some 16 tracks that were intended to be released as "First Rays Of The New Rising Sun" however only the 1 single was released. Here are those tracks listed in alpha order as it would be impossible to predict what the running order would have been for this Double-LP. Astro Man Bleeding Heart Burning Desire Earth Blues Ezy Rider Hear My Train A Comin Hey Gypsy Boy Izabella Let Me Move You Machine Gun Message To Love Power Of Soul Room Full Of Mirrors Somewhere Steppin Stone Them Changes In Nov 1969 Miles & Hendrix recorded a backing track for "Lightnin Rod" titled "Doriella Du Fontaine" however this song was not released until 1984. > Easy Greasy: 1971 < After Miles was fired from the "Band Of Gypsys" by Hendrix's manager Michael Jeffery, allegedly, because Miles & Hendrix were ‘too close’ of friends. Miles resumed with his 3rd release that came out in 1970 "Them Changes" with Billy Cox on Bass, also in late 1970 "We Gotta Live Together" the 5th LP released was in 1971 "A Message To The People" followed later in '71 with "Live" completing his 6 LP contract with Mercury Records. Miles then teams up with "SANTANA" to perform @ The "1972 Sunshine Festival" 1 Jan 1972 in Honalulu, HI. A live LP is released from this show "Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles: Live" later this year in Jun '72. On 21 Jan 1972 Buddy Miles performs @ the Met Center in Bloomington, MN. I am uncertain if it was with the “Express" or with "SANTANA". This collaboration with "SANTANA" leads to Miles being signed to Columbia Records for a 3 LP deal starting in 1973. the 1st being "Booger Bear" in early 1973, followed by "Chapter 7" later in 1973, followed by the 1974 release "All The Faces" completing his Columbia contract. > More Miles Per Gallon: 1976 < In the mid 70s Miles signs to Casablanca Records (the same record label as KISS) my friend Bobby Berge, Mile’s grade school friend is hired to play drums while Miles comes out front to sing lead & play guitar. "More Miles Per Gallon" is released in 1976 followed by "Bicentennial Gathering Of The Tribes" in 1977. It was shortly after this time that Miles did a stint in the California penal system on drug related charges, from the late 70s to the early 80s. Miles did release 1 LP while incarcerated @ the CIM prison in Chino, CA. as the "Buddy Miles Regiment" the LP "Sneak Attack" on Atlantic Records in 1981. Miles did return to the music scene in the most unusual way in the late 80s as the Lead Vocalist & Drummer of the "California Raisins" from 1987 - 1988 where he provided the Lead Vocals for 4 LPs on Priority Records beginning with "Sing The Hit Songs" in 1987 followed by "Sweet, Delicious, & Marvelous" in early 1988, the 3rd CD (as vinyl was stopped in Jan 1988) was "Meet The Raisins" in summer of 1988 & the final CD "Christmas With" in Dec 1988. > Blues Berries: 1994 < Miles went on to release some 6 other CDs from 1994 to 2005, & was the headliner @ the Annual "Tommy Bolin Festival" held in Aug 2000 in Sioux City, Iowa, (coming up again on 2 Aug 2014 Sat once again in Sioux City) however I was informed due to continued occasional drug use & poor health, Miles recorded & toured intermittently. When I was working for Wax Works, our Electra Records Rep. was Jaron K. from Omaha, NE. who happened to be very close friends with Miles, due to the fact Jaron's father played in Miles band in the 90s. When Miles played on 13 Jan 2001 in MPLS @ Cabooze as mentioned in the article "Buddy Miles Live Review - Blues On Stage" by: Al Rohweder, Jaron introduced me to Buddy, I was able to get my copy of "Band Of Gypsys" signed & ask Miles about his session work with The MONKEES. I was at work when I received the news that Buddy had passed, I was sad but not surprised as I knew Buddy was in poor health the last few years of his life. To this day "Them Changes" is still one of my all time favorite songs, in fact I played on the last radio show I was a guest host on earlier this year on KFAI. See you on the other side ... MrZer0

“BUZZ Newspaper Article: Jun- July 2014 (#39-dC)

Back in the “Olden Days” before the Intronets & The Youtubes, a lot of us youngsters discovered new music from the older brothers & sisters in my case, it was my Aunts & Uncles. When I was a toddler my Aunt Debby used to baby sit me & play her 45 singles on her record player, her favorite band at that time was the “DAVE CLARK 5” while I am not exactly sure what here favorite songs were, there is an 8mm film of me dancing to a yellow label 45 playing on her record player I would say about Dec 1965 or so.

Being from Sioux City, Iowa our home town Hero is one Tommy R. Bolin, I am working on a book on Tommy due out 2016 (the 40th anniversary of his passing) I have written several articles on Tommy Bolin, one of which caught the eye of his former childhood friend John Eckhart in California. John called me last month to talk to me about Tom Bolin & turns out he is the current manager of thee Dave Clark & Sam the Sham ! With the new PBS documentary “Glad All Over” that just came out in April 2014, I thought I would cover the 1st British Invasion band that toured the USA.

> Bits And Pieces < 1958- 1962 David "Dave" Clark was born 15 Dec 1942 in Trottenham, N. London, started out as a film extra in the films "The VIP's" & "Pink Panther: Shot In The Dark" then using the money he earned, purchased a set of drums & taught himself how to play. Clark started a skiffle group in 1957 called the "Dave Clark Quintet" with Guitarist: Dave Sanford, Bassist: Chris Walls, Pianist: Don Vale, in order to raise money to fund his Soccer Team. In 1958 Rick Huxley (5 Aug 1940- 11 Feb 2013: Dartford Kent) replaced Sanford, & the "DAVE CLARK FIVE" was born, then with a series of musicians who joined & left until the lineup stabilized in 1962, with Pianist: Mike (Michael George Smith: 6 Dec 1943; Edmonton, N. London – 28 Feb 2008) & Guitarist: Lenny (Leonard Arthur Davidson: 30 May 1944 Enfield, Middlesex) & Saxophonist: Denny (Denis Archibald West Payton: 11 Aug 1943: Walthamstow– 17 Dec 2006). Their music was labeled as the “Tottenham Sound” in reference to the area of Northern London from which they came about 8 miles north of Charing Cross. The 2nd British Invasion Band to appear on the famous Ed Sullivan Variety Show beginning 8 Mar 1964. Initially the DC5 were more popular in the USA than their native UK, probably because they made a record breaking 13 appearances on the Sullivan Show. The band released 36 singles from 1963- 1973 with no less than 15 Top 20 Hits in just 2 years as well as 17LPs during that same time. > I Knew It All The Time < 1964 As with almost all UK Bands at this time their USA releases differed vastly from the original UK releases, the 1st UK LP in 1964 was titled "A Session With" however in the USA the DC5 released 3 LPs in 1964 "Glad All Over" with the #6 Hit "Glad All Over" in Apr 1964 & "Bits And Pieces" a #4 hit in May 1964 (later covered by Joan Jett in 1981) & the #11 Hit "Do You Love Me" also in May 1964. Their 2nd USA LP was "Return!" (the USA equivalent to "Session") with "Can't You See That She's Mine" a #4 Hit in Jul 1964. Then the band's 3rd USA release "American Tour" with the #3 Hit "Because" in Aug 1964. Their final hurrah in '64 was appearing in their 1st Film "Get Yourself A Collage Girl" Metrocolor Dec 1964 performing “Whenever You're Around,” & “Thinking of You Baby." The Remco Toy company put out dolls of the DC5 just as they had earlier in 1964 with The BEATLES, except these had Dave Clark at 5" tall & the other 4 members at 3" tall. The DC5 was the 1st British Invasion Band to Tour the USA in starting in May 1964, they eventually performed in MPLS. Interesting note; Clark 1st Rogers drums then switched to the German made Trixon Drum Kits. Here is the Setlist (to the best of my knowledge) for the MPLS show. *27 Nov 1964 Minneapolis Armory: $4.oo*

> Don’t You Know < 1965 The unusual thing about the DC5 was the fact they usually only put 10 or sometimes 11 songs per LP when most bands at the time put out 12 per LP, the result of this was DC5 could put out way more LPs than even The BEATLES did at that time. The 4th release was "Coast to Coast" in 1965 with the #14 Hit "Any Way You Want It" from Dec 1964 (this song was covered by KISS in 1977), followed by their 5th LP "Weekend in London" also in 1965 with the #14 Hit "Comin Home" in Feb 1965.I am constantly referring to Non-LP 45 Singles their next big hit was just that "Reelin And Rockin" a #23 Hit in Apr 1965. At this point the band start putting out so many 45 Singles, it was taking a awhile for the Hits to be put on an LP. Their 6th LP "Having a Wild Weekend"in the USA 1965 or "Catch Us If You Can" in the UK 1965 with 5 songs by the DC5, including"Catch Us If You Can" a #4 Hit in Oct 1965, this album also contains my favorite DC5 song "Don't Be Taken In “this LP is the soundtrack to their film, (as The BEATLES had "Hard Day's Night" & "Help") Their film "Having A Wild Weekend" originally titled "Catch Us If You Can" from April 1965 on Anglo-Amalgamated Film Distributors in UK & WB in the USA Directed by; John Boorman, starring Barbara Ferris as Dinah,(Ferris replaced actress Marianne Faithful). Interesting story here, the films shooting schedule was halted slightly when Clark complained about the film's costumes to Asst. Producer Alexander Jacobs whose wife was the designer, Jacobs responded by punching Clark in the face giving Clark a swollen nose, which resulted in Clark not being able to photographed for a few days. Their 7th LP "I Like It Like That" also released in 1965 contained the #7 "I Like It Like That" from Jul 1965, followed by the Christmas #1 Hit "Over And Over" in Dec 1965.Sometime in 1965 the LP "DC5 & The Washington DC's" 1965 Ember Records #FA-2003 containing "Chiquita" "In Your Heart" "Where Did You Go" "Shimmy Shimmy" was released, these were the band's 1st two 45 singles & the only ones not controlled by Dave Clark, so they were released several times, however this is the rarest version on the LPs, as I was informed by Clark's Manager John Eckert. > Looking In < 1966- 1967 As 1966 kicks off DC5 release "Greatest Hits" #LN-24185. The 1st big hit for them this year is the Non-LP 45 Single "At The Scene" a #18 in Feb, then followed by their 8th LP "Try Too Hard" 1966, with the #12 Hit "Try Too Hard" in Apr 1966. Their 9th LP "Satisfied with You" with the #28 Hit "Please Tell Me Why" in Jun 1966. You can see a pattern has developed, where the band release an album with essentially1 maybe 2 hits contained on it. As the Psychedelic era is ushered in, the DC5 by in large stick to what they do best, so consequently they do not continue to rack up as many Top 40 hits moving forward. To finish out the year "More Greatest Hits" #BN-26221 is released. Their 1st release in 1967 is their 10th LP "5 By 5" this is the 1st DC5 LP to not have a Top 40 hit, soon followed by "You Got What It Takes" bouncing back with the #7 Hit "You Got What It Takes" in May 1967. Then in Nov 1967 "Everybody Knows" becomes a #15 Hit, followed by the 11th LP of the same name "Everybody Knows" this LP came out in the UK in 1967, however not released until 1968 in the USA. This marks the end of the DC5 's heyday, as there are no more original studio LPs released in the USA by the band. > Break Down & Cry < 1969- 1972 Starting in 1969 the band release "5 by 5 = Go!" then followed by "If Somebody Loves You" both released in 1969 & only released in the UK. In 1970 the band release "Good Old Rock'n'Roll" again this LP only comes out in the UK. Thus marks the end of the "DAVE CLARK FIVE" as the next LP released was released under the title "Dave Clark & Friends" in 1972 & released only in the UK, there were however 3 different "Best Hits" Packages released in 1971, 1975 & finally in 1978. Dave Clark a shrewd businessman owned the rights to all but the 1st two 45 singles recordings, so between 1978 & 1993 NO Music from this band was commercially available, as Clark was no longer proud of the music form that time, as well as not being a fan of the compressed sound of music on CD, in addition to not being offered the financial compensation he was looking for until a New Disney record label made an offer he felt was amicable, (they made the same offer to “QUEEN”) so a 2CD & Cassette "History of Dave Clark Five" 1994 Hollywood Music was finally released, however this had a strict 5 years production clause. In 2008 the DC5 was inducted "Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame" And so there you have it ... The History of The DC5 the 1st true rival of The Beatles! “Build A Better Mousetrap”
> FASTER PUSSYCAT: 1987- 1993 < https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1ntsBXdK88 "BUZZ: Newspaper Article May-Jun 2014: (#38-fP) By: RLSchwinden aka: MrZer0 Back in the 80s I worked for "RecordShop" (based out of Golden Valley, MN.) Summer of '87 the newest batch of "Promo" Cassettes (yes folks by 1987 the record companies were sending out Cassettes NOT Vinyl Records) I looked through them, as usual, I was always playing Anything new that came in, the current trend at that time was Rap & Hair Metal, (truthfully I wasn't much into either one, I preferred late 60s music, anything from 1965- 1969 actually), but I spied this unusual looking cover, sorta reminded me of the "New York Dolls" (another favorite of mine) the title "Faster Pussycat" I said to myself, "Well, what do we have here ..." so I put it on & fell in love. There weren't a lot of new bands I liked in the late 80s, "Hanoi Rocks" "The Cult" "Faster Pussycat" "Skid Row" "Warrior Soul" "Saigon Kick" maybe a few others. >City Has No Heart < It begins like this, one Tamie Downe (Gustave Molvik: 29 Sep 1964 Seattle, Wash. of Norwegian descent) a Vocalist, guitar player hooked up with Greg Steele a guitar player in Los Angeles sometime in 1985, with a 2nd guitarist Brent Muscat (23 Apr 1967 L.A. CA. indecently Muscat has 2 brothers also musicians, one being Corey in the band "The BEAUTIES") the trio formed "FASTER PUSSYCAT" the name taken from a 1965 Russ Meyer film "Faster Pussycat Kill, Kill". Originally with Walt Adams on: Bass, then Kelly Nickels, took his place & then finally Eric Stacy (5 Jun 1964: L.A.CA.) on Bass, (reportedly because he came from money) with Mark Michals (Las Vegas, NV.) on Drums. "Guns N Roses" being the hottest thing in L.A. at the time Electra Records signed "FASTER PUSSYCAT" as their answer to "G N R". The band's 1st LP Electra #9-60730, was released in Jul '87 just 2 weeks before G N R's 1st full LP, with videos produced for "Don't Change That Song" directed by: Russ Meyer no less, & "Bathroom Wall" at this time in the music scene a video out was considered more vital than a single (cassingle or CD5). On the tour for the 1st record Faster Pussycat played"1st Ave" 31 Aug 1987 w/ Ace Frehley's Comet, I wasn't able to make this show. The band was prone to playing new songs that were yet to be released; in 1988 they were playing 2 songs regularly that would come out on the next CD in a slightly different form. The band was chosen to be in the film, "Decline Western Civilization Part 2: The Metal Years" which came out in Jun 1988 they performed, live "Cathouse",a band Interview & "Bathroom Wall" I found these guys to be hysterical. Quotes; Spheeris "So why are you in Rock N Roll?" Steele: "I'm just doing this til I can be a manger of McDonald's or something" Michals: "I'm just purely lazy, that's why I do it" >Ain’t No Way Around It < The band's 2nd CD was released in Sep 1989, titled "Wake Me When It's Over" the title taken from a 1960 comedy film, the 1st video for this release was "Poison Ivy" 1st of all this CD is twice as long as the previous CD, I felt it was a real step up from the last one which was really good, so I think their 2nd CD is fantastic! While on tour with "WINGER" & "CINDERELLA" in Omaha, Neb. in Nov 1989 scheduled to play the club "Mudbugs" Drummer: Michals had FedEx send a package of heroin & Buprenex to his hotel room. When he signed for the package in the hotel lobby the FBI arrested him on the spot. An acquaintance of mine Scott M. was at this show that night & told me, the other 2 bands went on then they cleared the club & had everyone go outside while the band rehearsed with "CINDERELLA" drummer Fred Coury for just under a half hour, then they let everyone back in the club & Faster Pussycat did about a 45 min set. The 2nd video for this CD was "House Of Pain" a #28 Billboard Hit May 1990, & the Disc went Gold selling over 500,000 copies. I was able to see the band 3 times on this tour, in Omaha, Cedar Rapids, & Des Moines (w/ KISS). >Gonna Walk < I worked for "RecordShop" as I mentioned we held an "In Store Signing" for the band on 2 June 1990 @ Southridge Mall, over 1000 people showed up, it was the 2nd largest showing for an "In Store" for the band, 1st being their hometown L.A. while waiting out in the backroom, Downes & Steele went into the shop's bathroom to use some substance, utilizing the shop's two-way mirror to spread it out on, Muscat wanted part of the action & began banging on the bathroom door, a fully fledged fist fight broke out between the 3 Downes getting the worst of it. When the fight was done 2 of the band members proclaimed they "Were done & not going out there" The WEA Label Rep, Stacey S. came to the rescue & told them "Get yourselves together, clean your selves up, get out there & do your job!" they did & signed for over 1000 people for several hours. Afterwards Tamie bought a few Rap Cassettes, like "2 Live Crew" & "N.W.A." In the 90s in Japan started releasing CD, EPs (extended play) unavailable in the USA so "Live & Rare" on Alex Imports WPCP-3470 was released with 6 alternate songs: "Bathroom Wall (remix)" "Poison Ivy (single version)" "Pullin Weeds" "Slip Of The Tongue" & "Babylon" (Live Versions) & "House Of Pain (single version) none of these were available of other releases. The band also recorded a cover of ”You're So Vain" with a video for the 40th Anniversary of Electra Label's "Rubáiyát" CD & Cassette various artist compilation. >Only Way Out < After a 3 year hiatus "Whipped!" came out in Aug 1992 with the video "Non Stop To Nowhere" (I believe Muscat married the cover model) once again the band goes in a new direction this time a more "Industrial" sound. A 2nd EP was released "Belted, Buckled & Booted" with 2 unreleased songs "Too Tight" & "Charge Me Up" followed by the video "The Body Thief" the band was again scheduled to open for KISS on the "Revenge Tour", however WEA dropped the band shortly after they released the 3rd & final CD on their contract, I remember being shocked when Mike M. the WEA Rep. at the time told me this, with no label support the band stuck it out & toured on their own however Eric Stacy had left the band, the touring bassist I believe was Muscat's future brother-in-law, however a friend of mine thinks it was Robbie Crane (5 Jan 1969: Orange County, CA.). I was able to catch them live; @ Center Stage in Des Moines, Iowa Oct 1992
Jack the Bastard
Where There’s a Whip There’s a Way
Cathouse
Blood (unreleased track for the next CD)
Slip of the Tongue
Poison Ivy
Nonstop to Nowhere
You’re So Vain
Little Dove
The Body Thief
Pulling Weeds
No Room For Emotion
Bathroom Wall
House of Pain
Babylon

This is the set list, to the best of my memory; I have an incomplete cassette recording of this show. Towards the end of this tour the band were playing 4 new songs “Where I Live” “Bound & Gagged” & “Dance On Me” & “Blood” that were to come out on the next CD due in late 1994, that CD never came to be. The band eventually called it quits in June 1993, not to play again until 2001 when “The Newlydeads” joined with Muscat & Steele to create the “New” Faster Pussycat.

>Disintegrate < To kick off this "Reunion Tour" they released a "remix" CD "Between The Valley Of The Ultra Pussy” on Deadline Records in May 2001, containing 11 older songs remixed & 2 unreleased songs "Blood" & "I Was Made For Lovin You" (submitted for, but not used on KISS' 1994 "Tribute" CD) I caught them on this tour @ "1st Ave" 9 Jul 2001. It was a bittersweet show, as it was 3 of the original members, but many of the old songs were performed with an "Industrial" arrangement as well as some new songs "Whorehouse" "Lipstick" "Submission" "Shut Up & Fxxx" "Killed By Death" "These Boots Were Made For Walkin" A "Greatest Hits" CD was released in Oct 2003 on RHINO with an edited version of ”Where There's A Whip". Their 4th studio CD was released in July 2006 "Power & The Glory Hole" on Full Effect Records you can really tell how much Muscat & Steele contributed to the 1st 3 releases as the songs on this 4th CD are fairly thin in comparison. A whopping 13 guests appear on this CD. In Jul 2009 they release their 1st "live" CD "Front Row For the Donkey Show" also on Full Effect The band still tours, in fact: Faster Pussycat will be at Pickle Park in Fridley 1 Aug 2014, however Taime is the only original member, on that:
Xristian Simon: Guitar, Danny Nordahl: Bass, Chad Stewart: Drums have been in the band since 2001 (the original band was together just 9 years).

Mr. Zero’s “Psychogello” Now welcome to the show …..
“BUZZ Newspaper Article” April- May 2014 (#37-nRd)
By: RLSchwinden Aka MrZer0

As April is National Record Store Month & Mr. Zero’s 5th Anniversary, I thought I would cover some of my favorite records.
As The Story goes, like this …

My life has been compared to the film “High Fidelity” 2000 Touchstone Starring John Cusack.

In March 2009, myself, Computer Steve, Lamar, Watrous & Crazy Rob, began putting together what was to become Mr. Zero’s Inc. (14 April 2009) I took the name from “The MONKEES” TV episode #52 from 5 Feb 1968, “Devil & Peter Tork” where Peter Tork accidentally sells his soul to “Mr. Zero” (The Devil played by Monte Landis: 20 Apr 1933) at a pawn shop, in return for the ability to play the harp. Our main mascot “Mr. Zero” was drawn by (DC Comic Artist): Jose Delbo (9 Dec 1933 Argentina), who drew The BEATLES: “Yellow Submarine” comic book 1968 Gold Key Comics. At 1st we were an “On-Line” Store, then after a few months I showed my business partners, in order to get quality product we have to open an actual brick & mortar Shop for the customers to bring us the product.

Since we opened the doors in Nov 2009 I have been on local TV-C15 “Tale Of Ten Cities” & Fox 9 Local & National news, involved with 3 local films, a guest on local radio, I have been involved with the local band, “Jesus Chrysler” I am currently in the band MrZERo (the 4 members met here in the shop) & a KISS: Tribute Band “Rock And Roll All Nite” (formed by: Cat Jackson) & recently added as the Bassist to the Local Original Band “Action Go” I have been featured in “Star Tribune” “City Pages” “Vita.Mn” “Metro Magazine” & The “Park Bugle” as well as helping to promote: ”Tommy Bolin Music Fest” “Crypticon” “Northland Toy Show” “SpringCon & FallCon” “Musicians Trade Fair” “VFW RecordShow” Music Expo” & “Sound + Vision Show” I wrote a vintage film column for “Lost My Stub” I have written this music column for “BUZZ Newspaper” since April 2011 & many, other promotions to numerous to list here.

In Feb 2014 I was a guest on the KFAI Radioshow “The Pop Shop” with Liberty Finch & DJ Izzy. So I will go over some of the songs I played on My Radio Show “Mr. Zero’s Psychgello” as a guest of the “The Pop Shop” & what they mean to me.

“Surfin Bird” The Trashmen “Surfin Bird” 1963 Nov Garrett #LPGA-200
When I was a kid my Dad Willis Jr. had a drumset in the basement, a Japanese kit, orange sparkle, & a Trashmen LP, he always used to play along with. Once I asked him “Dad, why do you always play with that old music?” he answered “Because before I went to Viet Nam, I played with this band”

“Glad All Over” Dave Clark Five- “Glad All Over” 1963 Nov Epic #26093
When I was a toddler my Aunt Debby used to play this song on her record player, to get me to dance to it. Somewhere I have 8mm video footage of me dancing with her to this music.

“John Riley” The Byrds “Fifth Dimension” 1966 Jul Columbia #2549
I 1st heard this band in a late 70s documentary on “The 60s” they played 1 of their more popular songs, so I went to Woolco & bought this LP, I heard this song & it took the wind out of me, it’s based on Homer’s “Odyssey” in Oct 2000 I met Joan Baez before her concert @ St. Kate’s & asked if she would sing this song that night, she answered “That’s an old one” after the intermission she came out & said “Before the show I met a young man who reminded me I used to be a folk singer, & asked me to sing this song, I hope he’s out there, because here it goes” & she sang the song. After the show her Road Manger Jim, told me “she has only ever done that for someone twice in the last 20 years … you should feel honored”

“With A Girl Like You” The Troggs “Wild Thing” 1966 Jul Fontana #27556
I heard this song in the Nicole Kidman film “Flirting” 1991 SGC, I think it captures a teenage boy’s dreams of his 1st love. It’s a great coming of age film too, set in Australia.

“You’re Gonna Miss Me” 13th Floor Elevators “Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators”1966 Nov. International Artists. They just played “1st Ave” in Feb. The opening song to the film of my life “High Fidelity”

“Today” Jefferson Airplane 1967 Feb “Surrealistic Pillow” RCA #LPM-3766
I had already liked this band, but a girl I was dating back in the 90’s Grace H. told me this was one of her favorite bands, so I gave them a deeper listen & discovered this gem.

“Fixing A Hole” The Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” 1967 Jun. Capitol #SMAS-2653
As a kid this was my all time favorite LP, I would sit & stare at the cover for hours, I always wanted a suit like Ringo’s. It was hard to choose my favorite song from this LP but I did it.

“Words” The MONKEES 1967 Nov “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.” Colgems #COM-S 104
When I 1st heard this song in the TV episode #51 “Monkee’s Paw” (29 Jan 1968) as a kid on Sat. Morning Reruns. This song really made an impact on me, I spent the whole day singing it over & over I asked my baby-sitter Stacey P. what was this song, the following week she gave me the 45 single of it.

“Twelve Thirty” Mamas & Papas “Papas & Mamas” 1968 May Dunhill #DS-50031
Christmas of ’67 my Mom played thissong over & over, I loved this song, it took me years to figure out it was not called “Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon”

“Goodbye Baby”: Boyce & Hart “Wonder What She’s Doing Tonite” 1968 A&M #SP-4143
When I was young I actually used to read the record labels, as well as the covers, I noticed Boyce & Hart wrote most of The MONKEES songs I liked, then 1 day after school I saw Boyce & Hart on “I Dream Of Jeanie” eventually I became friends of Bobby Hart & Billy Lewis (their Drummer) & acquaintances with Tommy Boyce (& his Widow Caroline). I actually worked on a “Behind The Music” for them in 1996, that never got picked up, however there is currently a Documentary in the works on them due out soon.

“Badge” Cream “Goodbye” 1969 Feb Atco #SD-7001
When I 1st heard this song it sounded like a George Harrison song to me, & then I found out, it was, because Harrison co-wrote it & performed on it. I love the descending picking on this song.

“See” The Rascals “See” 1969 Dec Atlantic SD-8246
In the 90s I was buying up as many 60s Band’s Greatest Hits on Cd as I could get my hands on. I remembered as a kid I loved a song by this band, then I got to this song, this one is really uplifting to me. I was able to meet 3 of the 4 band members.

“Planet Caravan” Black Sabbath “Paranoid” 1970 Sep Warner Bros. #WS-1887
Everyone knows this LP, & when my Uncle John brought it over to our house, to babysit me & my 2 sisters, 1 Sat. afternoon, holy smokes this changed my life, it was way heavier than The Beatles or The Osmonds. However this is the track I love the most off this LP. Occasionally we jam on this tune in practice for the MrZERo band.

“Gypsy Queen” Gypsy 1970 “Gypsy” Metromedia #MD2-1031
I found out about this song when the artist James “Owl” Walsh came to me & asked if our Shop (Mr. Zero’s) would like to carry his CD Boxset. I gave it a listen, oh man … little did I know only a couple weeks later I would meet a lady just like this song describes.

“Foggy Mental Breakdown” Steppenwolf “7” 1970 Nov Dunhill #DSX-50090
When I was a kid my Dad had a white VW Beetle with red interior & an 8Track Player & about 3, 8Tracks, this is 1 of them, I love this LP & this is my favorite song from the LP, I just love when John Kay & George Biondo trade off lead vocals, for a short time Journey did the same with Rolie & Perry.

“I’ll Meet You Halfway” Partridge Family “Up To Date” 1971 Bell #6059
The MONKEES had ended when I was really young, but I was just old enough to dig The Partridge Family TV Show, with 60% of the same song writers & musicians involved it was an easy transition for me. This one was written by Goffin who wrote several hits for The Monkees, also it captures my idea of how all relationships should work.

“Hold Her Tight” The Osmonds “Crazy Horses” 1972 MGM #SE-4871
Up until The Beatles this was the heaviest music I was exposed to, again introduced to me by my Uncle John, I loved this LP, yet another LP cover I would sit & look at for hours. I was fortunate enough to meet 3 of the 5 brothers @ Mystic Lake in Mar 2001 where incidentally they recorded their “Back On The Road” Live CD, that night. I was able to meet the other 2 brothers in 2003, so my LP is signed by all 5 brothers.

“Photograph” Ringo Starr “Ringo” 1973 Nov Apple #SWAL-3413
When we live in my favorite house as a kid on W. 17th st. I would sit the hallway listening to our big white & gold 1940s radio & this was my favorite song then. Yet another 1 written with Harrison.

“Got To Choose” KISS 1974 Oct “Hotter Than Hell” Casablanca #NBLP-7006
In the summer of ’76 I discovered KISS. This has to be my favorite song by them. I am in a KISS: Tribute Band “Rock And Roll All Nite” this is song #10 in our set. I also was on the staff that wrote a book about KISS :Alive Forever” 2002 Billboard Books.

“Sweet Burgundy’ Tommy Bolin “Private Eyes” 1976 Aug Columbia
I am from Sioux City, Iowa home of this artist, in fact his family lived across the street from us on Pierce St. this song really sums up Tommy’s music for me. Tommy showed me that “If Bolin from Sioux City can end up in Deep Purple, then surly I can get out of this town” I have been working on a book “Post Toastee” on Tommy for some time.

Ok, fans there’s a Top 20 for you.

*Please remember folks, “National Record Store Day” was designed for you to put down your Cellphone, & Get Off The Intronets, go outside & buy products from your local music store to help keep them open another year.

Another thing to keep in mind fans, until the mid 60s most Artists songs sold on 45 Singles (not LPs) in the 70s LPs & 8Tracks were the biggest selling format, in the 80s Cassettes were the Top format, 1987 was the last year for all 6 Major Labels Vinyl production in the USA, in the 90s almost everything sold on CD (some Cassettes). It wasn’t till the mid 2000s that they really started making Vinyl again.

So like Ace Frehley once sang in 1984: “You better get yourself to the record store”

Until the nest installment… “Nerd Is The Word”

The MC5: Looking @ You …
“BUZZ” Newspaper Article Mar- Apr 2014 (#36- mC)
By: RLSchwinden aka MrZERo

When I was a kid in Sioux City, I used to go over to my Grandma’s & sit in my Aunt Cathy’s bedroom & listen to her records as she had so many more than me, & so many different artists than I did. One day I put on an album titled “Heavy Metal” a 1974 WB Various Artist LP, on Side A track #1 was a song that punched me right in the gut … that song was “Kick Out The Jams” (censored version) by the “MC5” (Motor City Five). Many years later I was listening to “HANOI ROCKS” 1985 LP “Rock & Roll Divorce” & the last track was “Looking At You” by MC5. so I looked into this “Pre-Punk Band” of the late 60s from Detroit & here’s what I found … there are many arguments as to who actually started “Punk Music” The SONICS, BLUE CHEER, The STOOGES or NEW YORK DOLLS or this month’s focus Artist.

> The Rocket Reducer < It all started with 2 high school buddies Wayne S. Kramer (30 Apr 1948) & Fred "Sonic" Smith (Frederick Dewey Smith: 14 Sep 1949 W. Virginia - 4 Nov 1994 Detroit) were in the band the "Bounty Hunters" in 1962 when they met met one Rob Tyner (Robert W. Derminer: 12 Dec 1944- 17 Sep 1991 Berkley, MI). Tyner became the Bass Player in 1963 but switched to Vocals when he came up with the new name of the band MC5 (Motor City Five) in 1964. There were several others in the band from the early days of the "Bounty Hunters" such as Billy Vargo & Leo LeDuc & then Bob Gaspar & Pat Burrows, before the legendary line-up, then Michael H. Davis (5 Jun 1943– 17 Feb 2012 Chico, CA) joined on Bass in 1964, & Dennis "Machine Gun" Thompson (Dennis A. Tomich:7 Sep 1948) solidified the line-up in 1965. >Borderline< In 1966 the band release their 1st 45 Single on AMG Records "I Can Only Give You Everything b/w One Of The Guys" in early 1968 a 2nd 45 Single followed on A-Square Records "Borderline b/w Looking At You" with a picture sleeve, this 45 sold several thousand copies while a 3rd 45 Single was released in late 1968 on AMG Records the A-Side was re-released, "I Can Only Give You Everything b/w I Just Don't Know". In Jan 1969 the band had a cover story on "ROLLINGSTONE Magazine" from drawing so much attention from the live performances. >Motor City Is Burning< In Feb 1969 the band release its 1st LP "Kick Out The Jams" on Electra Records EKS-74072 with the 45 Single of the same name b/w "Motor City Is Burning" which hit #82 on the Billboard Charts. In a strange move especially for the time the album was recorded "live" on 30- 31 Oct 1968 @ the Grande Ballroom in Detroit. Collectors Note: there 3 Versions of this LP. The Original Release with "Kick Out The Jams Mutha F******S" & the words printed inside the cover, the 2nd version with the words inside the cover changed to "Kick out the Jams, Brothers & Sisters" & the 3rd (most common) where the words inside the cover & on the LP are changed to "Brothers & Sisters" The start of the band being King's of Controversy their one time manager was John Sinclair (2 Oct 1941 Flint, MI)who was involved with the "White Panthers Group" who also booked the MC5 @ the National Democratic Convention in Aug 1968, where they played for some 8 hours straight. Sinclair was later arrested in 1969 for marijuana & incarcerated for 10 years, causing such an uproar John Lennon wrote a song in protest for Sinclair on "Sometime In New York City" in 1972. >The American Ruse< Then there was a huge conflict between Hudson's Dept. Store (Detroit based Company) who refused to carry the LP & the band. In a pompous bad move the band ran a print ad that read "F*** Hudson's" the Electra Label dropped the MC5. Then on 26 Feb 1969 Thompson became #10 & Kramer #11th 'members' of the "PLASTER CASTER" Club! MC5 performed their 1st concert here in Minneapolis 21 Sep 1969 @ The Labor Temple w/ opening Act "COTTONWOOD" Because of the bands ad stunt against Hudson's they were dropped from Electra & then signed to Atlantic Records their 2nd LP released in Jan 1970 "Back In The USA" is actually their 1st "Studio LP" produced by Jon Landau, who toned the band way down in an attempt to gain public acceptance. There were two 45 Singles released " Tonight b/w Looking At You (2nd Ver) " & "The American Ruse b/w Shakin Street" If one didn't know, you'd think "Shakin Street" is done by the GRATEFUL DEAD. >Future Now< In Jul 1971 "High Times" their 3rd LP was released again on Atlantic, this was the final LP released before the band eventually broke up on 1 Jan 1973. While on tour for the 3rd LP the band did play here in the Twin Cities in Jul 1971, as far as I can tell here is the setlist for that concert. The Minneapolis Armory July 1971 w/ Opening Band "SRC" (another Detroit band) Ramblin' Rose Tonight Rocket Reducer No. 62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa) Miss X Looking at You I Want You Right Now Sister Anne Kick Out the Jams Black to Comm In Feb 1972 Bassist Michael Davis was forced out of the band for excessive drug use he was replaced by no less than 3 different Bass players over the next 10 months. In mid Feb the band with UK Bassist Steve "Annapurna" Moorhouse record 3 songs "Gold" "Inside Out" & "Train Music" for the soundtrack to the 1972 film "Gold" these 3 songs are the last recordings of the original MC5. In Mar 1972 the band perform 5 songs on German TV for "Beat Club". In mid Nov 1972 Thompson quits the band & soon after Tyner quits as well. The original 5 reformed for a farewell concert New Year's Eve 1972 held @ the Grande Ballroom where the band started & the momentum of their core fan-base was built. Collector's Note: The vast majority of MC5 sales were in vinyl & some 8Tracks. >Revolution In Apt. #29< In the aftermath of all the controversy & drugs here are some things that happened to various members; Kramer was caught selling drugs to an undercover agent in 1975 sent to prison in Lexington, KY. until 1978, upon his release he moved to NYC where he & former "NEW YORK DOLLS" Johnny Thunders formed a band "GANG WAR". When I asked Kramer about this band his response was "Where'd you get this CD of GANG WAR? (my answer "My Shop Mr. Zero's) Oh, we lasted about 6 months or so til the drugs tore the band apart" I also told him "I love your solo CD from 1997 "Citizen Wayne" who had the revolution in Apt. #29?" Kramer "Yea, that was me, the neighbors kept complaining about" Davis was also arrested for selling drugs to an agent & sent to the Lexington Federal Prison around 1977 or so, where He & Kramer were reunited once again, under unfortunate circumstances. Sonic Smith married Punk Singer Patti Smith in 1980, SONIC died of a heart-attack in 1994. The Smith's son Jackson is married to "WHITE STRIPES" Drummer Meg White. In 1983 a Cassette only "Rarities" "Babes In Arms" was released on ROIR Tyner died in 1991, of a heart-attack, & the 4 surviving members performed a 30 min. set on 22 Feb 1992 in Detroit @ The State Theatre. In 1998 one of my New Favorite Bands "MONSTER MAGNET" covered "Kick Out The Jams" I have a Promo CD Single of this (signed by: Ed Mundell) where a word is bleeped out? In 2004 Davis died of liver failure. In 2003 the 3 surviving members Davis, Thompson & Kramer formed DTK/MC5 & toured until Feb 2012 when Davis died of liver failure. I was able to see this line-up along w/ Marshall Crenshaw on guitar taking Smith's place on 12 Jun 2004 @ 1st Ave in Minneapolis, I was able to meet & talk with my new found idols, after the show & get some LPs & CDs signed. You could tell all 3 were really grateful to have such loyal fans. A CD Boxset "Purity Accuracy" was released in 2004 as well as from 1994 to 2004 some 8 compilation CDs have been released & 5 different "Live Concert" CDs have been released, these were released on CD, as there was virtually NO Vinyl sold from 1988 to 2003 (despite what everyone would like to believe) . There you have it a brief history of The White Panthers Activists: MC5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rf_7GuVaN8k Dedicated to Sarah RN. (because I couldn't stop looking at her) By: RLSchwinden

The Blizzard Of Ozz

*Here lies Ozzy; the guy who bit the heads off a dove & a bat & peed on the Alamo …

“BUZZ Newspaper” Article Feb- Mar 2014 (#35-oZ)

>Birth of a Rebel <
John Michael “OZZY” Osbourne was born 3 Dec 1948 in the Aston section of Birmingham England. He went to grade school with Tony Iommi & was eventually in the band “Rare Breed” with Geezer Butler in 1967. In 1968 Iommi, Bill Ward, Butler & Osbourne formed “Polka Tulk” which became “Earth” in Sep 1968, then eventually “Black Sabbath” in Aug 1969. Osbourne was with “Sabbath” until Jan 1978, Ozzy left “Sabbath” to form what was to be the 1st incarnation of “Blizzard Of OZZ” (his father gave him the name) with 3 members of the band “Necromandus” with “Baz” Barry Dunnery on Guitar Dennis McCarten on Bass & Frank Hall on Drums, they worked on some studio demos until about Mar 1978 when Ozzy was persuaded to go back to “Sabbath” until mid 1979 when Osbourne was fired for his excessive alcohol & drug abuse & unreliable work ethic.

Ozzy formed the 2nd incarnation of “Blizzard Of OZZ” sometime in early 1980 initially christened “The Law” but soon changed to “Blizzard Of Ozz” with 2 former members of “Uriah Heep” Lee Kerslake (16 Apr 1947 Hampshire) on Drums & Bob Daisley (Robert John: 13 Feb 1950 Sydney) on Bass & new comer Randy Rhodes (Randall William: 6 Dec 1956 CA. -19 Mar 1982 FL) on Guitar formerly of “Quiet Riot” in Sep ’80 they release the 1st LP “Blizzard Of OZZ” much like Ozzy’s days in Black Sabbath the music was written mostly by: Rhodes & Daisley with almost all the lyrics being written by: Daisley & the melodies by Ozzy. Ozzy has stated that a few songs were things he had left over from Sabbath, that they would not spend enough time on, ex. Mr. Crowley & Goodbye To Romance. The 45 single of “Crazy Train b/w “You Lookin At Me” & an EP “Mr. Crowley LIve” followed in Dec’80 a picture disc with the Non-LP song “You Said It All”.

>O Fortuna <
The 2nd LP “Diary Of A Madman” was released in Nov 1981, again with the same band as the 1st LP. On 20 Jan 1982 in Des Moines, Iowa Ozzy performed a concert @ Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. Ozzy had his 2nd biting the head off of an animal indecent, a live bat.

A friend of mine T. was friends with the person who actually captured the bat, it was lethargic & hanging on the wall inside of his father’s garage, he used a mayonnaise jar to capture it & bring it in the show that night. During the Legendary “Meat Fight” at the concert he tossed it from the jar on stage. Ozzy mistakenly took it for a rubber bat & bit the head off & spit it out & tossed the carcass to the side of the stage where Sharon & crew determined the bat was in fact a real animal.

The medical staff wanted to take Ozzy by ambulance however Sharon was able to convince them to take Ozzy by helicopter to Broadlawns Hospital. My friend Steve’s mother was an admitting nurse that night & saw them wheel Ozzy in a gurney, Ozzy was making growling & hissing noises at the medical staff as they rolled him down the hall, she did manage to get Ozzy’s autograph for her son.
On 19 Mar 1982 Rhodes was killed in a plane crash in Leesburg, Fl. Then in Nov 1982 saw the release of “Speak Of The Devil” with Aldridge, Rudy Sarzo (18 Nov 1950 Cuba) & Brad Gillis (Bradley Frank: 15 Jun 1957 Honolulu), a live album of Sabbath covers in response to Black Sabbath releasing “Live Evil” with Dio on vocals. There was a VHS only for this album released in Japan of an entire performance from 12 Jun 1982 @ Irvine Meadows, CA.

>Talk Of The Devil<
The 1st time I saw Ozzy was in March 1983 in Sioux Falls SD @ The Coliseum this was not long after the “Speak Of The Devil” LP came out, Ozzy had recently shaved his head bald, so when he came out he had very short black hair. The band consisted of Jake E. Lee (Jakey Lou Williams 15 Feb 1957 Fairmont, W.VA.), Tommy Aldridge (15 Aug 1950 Jackson/Pearl, MS.) & Don Costa. To the best of my memory here is the setlist for this show

I Don’t Know
Mr. Crowley
Crazy Train
Suicide Solution
Revelation (Mother Earth)
Steal Away (The Night)
Believer
Flying High Again
Fairies Wear Boots
War Pigs
Iron Man
Children of the Grave
Paranoid

I remember Ozzy yelling “Don’t throw F******* coins, you could blind me, so don’t throw F****** coins or I’ll stop the show” about 2/3 the way into the show.

>The Silver Moon<
In Dec’83 “Bark At The Moon” was released with a VHS to follow shortly after. This LP was written mainly by Daisley & Lee, though they were not given credit. “Rock N Roll Rebel” was written by Ozzy, with different lyrics according to an interview I read a few months before the LPs release, There were two 45 singles were “Bark At The Moon b/w One Up The B-side” & “So Tired b/w Bark At The Moon: Live” as well as 1 song was left off the LP titled “Spiders”.
The next time I saw Ozzy was @ The Iowa Jam with “Accept, Night Ranger, Ted Nugent (w/ Brian Howe) & Motley Crue” in Des Moines IA. @ the State Fairgrounds on 28 May 1984. The band consisted of Lee, Daisley, Carmine Appice & Don Ariey

In Feb ’86 Ozzy’s 4th studio LP came out “Ultimate Sin” his band was now consisted of Lee, Randy Castillo (Randolpho Francisco Castillo: 18 Dec 1950 Albuquerque, NM – 26 Mar 2002) & John Sinclair (12 Apr 1952 London) of “Uriah Heep” the 3rd member of this band to play with Ozzy’s band & Phil Soussan (23 Jun 1961 London) with a VHS “Ultimate Ozzy” a concert filmed on 1 Apr 1986 in Kansas City’s Kemper Arena. Once again the majority of this LP was written by: Lee & Daisley, with the exception of “Shot In The Dark”

With several bootlegs floating around for years of the Ozzy/Randy era such as 2 May 1981 @ New York Palladium & 28 Jul 1981 Montreal Canada @ St Dennis Theater for the King Biscuit Flower Hour show & 7 Jan 1982 Albuquerque New Mexico Tingley Coliseum. The “Tribute” LP was released in Mar 1987 to commemorate the 5 year passing of Rhodes. This LP was mainly from the11 May 1981 Cleveland, OH. show.

>Crown Of Thorns<
In Feb 1988 Ozzy releases a duet with Lita Ford a 45 Single of “Close My Eyes Forever” oddly enough Iommi & Ford had recently broken off their engagement. In Oct 1988 Ozzy releases his 5th studio LP “No Rest For The Wicked” the band at this time was; Daisley, Castillo, Sinclair & new comer Zakk Wylde (Jeffrey Phillip Wielandt: 14 Jan 1967 Bayonne, NJ) on Guitar. As with the 4 albums before the majority of this record the lyrics were written by Daisley & the music was written by Wylde. Though Geezer Butler appears on the cover he is not on the LP, but did tour with Ozzy. There was a Promo only CD “Crown Of Thorns” released with the Non-CD Track “The Liar”. Later in 1989 there was a VHS released “Wicked Videos” on 12 Aug 1989 Ozzy performed at the “Moscow Peace Festival” an LP came out of this “Stairway To Heaven, Highway To Hell” where Ozzy recorded “Purple Haze”.

Ozzy’s long time friend Bill Ward releases “Ward One: Along The Way” in Jan 1990 with Ozzy, Daisley & Wylde, Ozzy sings lead on “Jack’s Land” & “Bombers”. Then in early 1990 the 1st “Best Of” CD & Cassette was released titled “Ten Commandments” on Priority Records (an independent label primarily known for Rap Releases) a 1 time print, this title vanished almost immediately after it came out, 10 songs from the 1st 4 albums. Then in Mar 1990 the EP “Just Say Ozzy” was released, a 6 song “Live” recording from Nov ’89, there was a Promo CD released from this too titled “Live Pigs”.

>They’re The Ones<
In the ongoing feud between Ozzy & Sabbath, Iommi & Butler release the VHS documentary “History Of Black Sabbath Vol. 1 & 2” in retaliation Ozzy & Bill Ward release “Don’t Blame Me” their own VHS documentary, this title sold a million copies on VHS, a theme song was recorded for this, but only released as a B-Side to the next single.

Then comes Ozzy’s zenith when he releases “No More Tears” in Sep 1991 again with Daisley, Sinclair, Castillo & Wylde. This time Wylde, Daisley & Lemmy (of: Motorhead) wrote the majority of the songs for Ozzy’s 6th CD. The single for “No More Tears” has the Non-CD track “S.I.N.” And Ozzy scores his 2nd Top 40 Hit with “Mama I’m Coming Home” a #28 hit on the Billboard Chart in Apr ’92.
It’s at this time Ozzy announces his retirement with the “No More Tours Tour” so we wind this down & leave the rest for “Part 2” … “See You On The Other side”

Note worthy:
Jake E. Lee’s new band “Red Dragon Cartel” will be appearing @ Pickle Park on 22 Mar 2014 Fri in Fridley, MN. I myself with Cat Jackson are part of a new Tribute to Ozzy/Sabbath “The Diary Of Ozzy” covering several Black Sabbath & Ozzy songs deep tracks & hits appearing with “Rock And Roll All Nite: Early KISS Tribute & GIRLS, girls, GirlS: Motley Crue Tribute”

Until The Next Time … check twice before you bite the head off that rubber bat.
