“BUZZ” Article Sep- Oct 2012 (#19-O)
When I was in hIGH CRuel everyone around me was a Beatles Fan, because Lennon had just been killed. I, however was a Rolling Stones fan, they were grittier and Rocked !!! So this time I am going to do 50 years in about 4.5 pages (wish me luck). This article is dedicated to “Poster John” & “Uncle Larry”

When Childhood friends Mick (Michael Philip Jagger 26 July 1943: Dartford, Kent) & Keith Richard (later re- adding an “S” in 1978, born 18 Dec 1943: Dartford, Kent) reconnected sometime in 1960 in a train station & began discussing Muddy Waters & Chuck Berry records they realized they had something in common. Along with Bassist Dick Taylor & Drummer Tony Chapman & at one time Mick Avory of The Kinks. Jagger, Richards & Taylor found Brian Jones (Lewis Brian Hopkins Jones: 28 Feb 1942 – 3 July 1969: Cheltenham, Gloucestershir) & Ian Stewart (Ian Andrew Robert Stewart: 18 Jul 1938 – 12 Dec 1985: Pittenweem, East Neuk, Fife, Scotland) & & Charlie Watts (Charles Robert Watts: 2 Jun 1941: Kingsbury) playing with the legendary Alexis Koener’s “Blues Incorporated”. Shortly thereafter Stewart secured a practice space and the band was born. It was Jones who named the Band after a Muddy Waters song “Rollin’ Stone” The band played their very 1st gig at the Marquee Club on 12 Jul 1962 with Stewart, Taylor & Chapman. Later on in Dec 1962 Bill Wyman (William George Perks: 24 Oct 1936: Lewisham, South London) incidentally Wyman created the 1st Fret-less Electric Bass Guitar in 1961. Then later in Jan 1963 Watts replaced Avory.

The band’s records came out on Decca in UK, and on the London label in USA, in 1971 the band formed Rolling Stones Records distributed by Virgin. They have released some 107 Single 45s many contain Non-LP Tracks such as: “Stoned” “The Singer Not The Song” & “We Love You” as well as 29 Studio LPs, 17 Live LPs & some 30 Compilation LPs
In the early days for some unknown reason when the entire Band wrote a song they used the fictitious name of Nanker/Phlege? So the band actually wrote 12 songs that most people do not realize are in fact Rolling Stones original compositions.
I have been dealing in “Used” Records since 1976 when I lived in Jackson, MS. one thing I consistently hear, is there has been much confusion over what a “True” Import is, vs. the traditional Bootleg being referred to as an Import in an attempt to Fool the RIAA & FBI. So here is a ‘true’ example of an ‘Import’ a Title like “No.2” released in another country, and Not released in the USA. A different example is “December’s Children” released only in the USA in Dec 1965, and does not have a UK counterpart release.

The band primarily known for being British R&B were asked by the record company to ride the current wave of “Psychedelia & Flower Power” so in the USA the London Label put out “Flowers” a near equivalent to The Beatles “Yesterday… And Today” also a USA only release. Then they were asked to record an LP similar to “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Harts Club Band” the result “Their Satanic Majesties Request” in Dec 1967, tracks I really like are “Citadel” & “Gomper” the band even used the same photographer used on “Sgt. Pepper” originally this LP was released in the much sought after 3-D flicker cover. I have seen out-take photos of the photo session and the band themselves cut up a “Sgt. Pepper” LP cover and used the 4 Beatles photos in the collage built for the photo shoot. Later in 1979 KISS would record a cover of “2000 Man” from this LP, sung by Ace Frehley.
After The Beatles released “The White Album” the Stones returned to their roots and released “Beggar’s Banquet” in Dec 1968. stand out tracks “Parachute Woman” & “Salt of the Earth” To promote the LP the band filmed the widely publicized “Rock N Roll Circus” on 11 Dec 1968, however this event would go unreleased until 1996, as the Stones thought The Who stole the show and their own performance was lack luster.
In Jun 1969 Jagger, Richards & Watts informed Brian Jones his services were no longer needed & Jones was let go. As he was hardly contributing to the most recent recordings & could not go out on tour. On 3 Jul 1969 Jones was found dead at the bottom of his own swimming pool. There is a film titled “Stoned” from 2005 that alludes to the idea Jones was murdered by a man, Frank Thorogood, who he had hired to renovate his house
The LP “Let It Bleed” was released in Dec 1969 it had 2 songs with Jones & 2 Jones with Taylor. Also this LP contained a Stones anthem as the legend goes, when the Stones were on their USA tour in 1964 they played “Big Reggie’s Ballroom” in Excelsior @ an Amusement Park on 6 Dec 1964, a man named Jimmy Hutmaker claims he met Jagger at a drug store, and is the inspiration for the “Mr. Jimmy” in the song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” released in Jul 1969. In the continuing effort to “Copy” The Beatles, this song was their response to “Hey Jude”.
“Life Has Got Me In It’s Sway”
“Mick” Michael Kevin Taylor (17 Jan 1949: Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire) was hired in late Jun 1969 to replace Jones, Taylor had replaced Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1965 until he was asked to join the Stones. His debut was at this “Free” concert before 250,000.

Probably my favorite Stones LP is “Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out” from Sep 1970, with “Stray Cat Blues” being my favorite track as well as “Jumpin Jack Flash” & “Street Fighting Man”. Joining in 1969 Guitarist Taylor quit in Dec 1974 citing musical differences claiming he Co-Wrote “Sway” & “Time Waits For No One” & several others, & he did not received his proper writing credits. I missed seeing Mick Taylor solo on 21 Aug 2001 MN. Zoo Amphitheater, my friend Scott said it was an amazing show and he finally got to meet his guitar hero. I did however get to see Bill Wyman, the night before at the very same venue on 20 Aug 2001. During the show he told us a joke: “A bus driver comes home from work calling to his wife, “I’ve won 5 million Pounds from lottery” she says “You have” he responds “Why yes I have, so pack your bags” she asks “Where are we going?” he says “Nowhere, now sod off” He signed my 8Track of his solo album from Jun 1974 “Monkey Grip” he asked me “That’s an 8Track?” I said “Yes it is” he responded “I’d sure like to have that…” I said “Just sign my “Jumpin Jack Flash” 45 Sleeve and it’s yours” he responded “Sorry, mate, no, Stones, I can’t sign any Stones items”
“5 Million Dollars Be My Price”
After the band lost a 2nd guitarist in just 5 years they enlisted “Ronnie” (Ronald David Wood: 1 Jun 1947 Hillingdon, Middlesex) in Mar 1975 Wood left the Band “The Faces” to join the Stones. Wood’s 1st full fledged recording with the band “Some Girls” released Jun 1978. With a very sought after 1st edition cover because 5 actress’ pictured on the cover complained, Ball, Fawcett, Welch, Garland & Monroe threatened to file suit so the cover was recalled.
The 1st time I missed seeing the Stones live was when I lived in Mesa, Az. 1981 the band played in Tempe, AZ @ Sun-devil Stadium 13 Dec 1981, however they were kind enough to film the concert and release it as “Let’s Spend The Night Together” in 1983 on VHS & Laserdisc. While I was living in AZ. I read an interview with Johnnie Bolin: drummer from “DVC” “Black Oak Arkansas” & “Tommy Bolin Band” where he cited Charlie Watts as his favorite drummer. Years later while living in Des Moines, IA. I missed seeing the Stones for a 2nd time, as I had just got back from seeing The Monkees 4 times in 1 weekend only a month earlier, however my friend Michael was savoy enough to tape the concert for me, so here’s the set-list from that show:

After the Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tours Wyman decided to call it a day and left the band in 1992, reportedly Jagger had asked him to stay as the next LP & Tour was several years away, Wyman declined and left.
Then I finally got to see the Stones for the 1st time on 1 Oct 1994 Ames, Iowa @ Cyclone Stadium, I remember it was packed and cold towards the end of the night. I also have a tape of that show.
In 1998 ‘The Verve’ were sued for essentially stealing “The Last Time” the orchestrated version that Andrew Loog Oldham created for his LP in 1965, for their song “Bitter Suite Symphony” Richards has stated “Why should I be flattered about having my music ripped off”
The 2nd time I got to see the Stones was in St. Paul, MN. @ Xcel Center 5 Sep 2005, I do remember the crowd was made up of mostly “Baby Boomers” not a whole lot of younger folks, which made me wonder about, not only the state of this band, but Rock N Roll in general ??? Well if nothing else the Beach Boys & The Rolling Stones turned 50 this year, and put out some product & toured to commemorate the fact…
Blast from the Past … Into the NOW !!!
